Arguably the most popular sleep and health data ring on the market, the Oura has just released a long awaited upgrade. Now consumers who want all the details about their health metrics can consider the newest version around, the Oura 4. Priced from $349 to $499, this ring offers some big upgrades from its previous version, the Oura 3, including, like many products, more sophisticated AI sensing.
According to the Oura website, the Oura Ring 4 has the new Smart Sensing. Per the website, “Smart Sensing allows Oura Ring 4 to adjust to your unique physiology and lifestyle — providing a precise and continuous picture of your overall health, while also optimizing battery usage.” In addition, the ring is supposed to provide better data overall, even though the sensors are recessed in the ring, unlike some competitors. This means it has a smoother feel on your finger rather than the small sensor bumps the Oura 3 had.
The new model was released on October 15th in the UK and US, after a few weeks of pre order availability. Those who ordered a charger kit with theirs will receive their order in November. In an effort to make the app itself more user friendly, Oura 4 customers will see their data organized into tabs including “Today,” “Vitals,” and “My Health.”
This is also a time to consider purchasing the previous version, the Oura Ring 3, for a cheaper price than the new one, at around $299. But, for the most up to date technology, the extra $150 to $300 might make the newest version worth it. Smart Sensing technology allows for more efficiency so the battery life has leveled up to 8 days without needing a charge. Anyone who is used to charging their smart watch every day might find great relief in that long stretch.
The Oura 4 is considered extremely accurate in the information it collects. Sensors included with the Oura 4, include measuring blood oxygen levels, heart rate and variability, respiration rate, digital temperature and accelerometer for movement information. The company is boasted improved accuracy, including the following metrics:
- 120 percent improvement in signal quality for blood oxygen sensing, which translates to a 30 percent increase in accuracy for overnight blood oxygen sensing measurements too
- 15 percent more accuracy in detecting breathing disturbances
- 7 percent fewer gaps in the daytime heart rate graph
- 31 percent fewer gaps in the nighttime heart rate graph
Smart rings are also becoming much more stylish, and this latest Oura version is available in six different colors, unlike the glossy black Oura 3.
The Oura has captured the attention and affection of celebs and everyday Americans alike, including one influencer who credits it with saving her life after discovering a sleep disorder through its data. Cierra Miller noticed it was hard to feel rested through the day. After noticing her sleep score was very low, she started to suspect a sleep disorder. She was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, which she credits to the ring’s data. She now combats symptoms with a mouthguard.
Though not everyone will make such a substantial discovery with the Oura Ring or any other wearable, learning more about your own health data can serve as a jumping off point to make lifestyle changes for the better.
