Body pillows offer a unique kind of coziness that makes you feel like you’re cuddling with a cushy companion, minus the snoring and comforter stealing. However, when choosing the body pillow that’s ideally suited to you, there’s a lot to consider. Some of the main features that you should take into account are size, shape, materials, price, and cooling features.
Like all sleep accessories, body pillows come in a wide range of materials, including latex, memory foam, down, and more. They are particularly beneficial for pregnant women and those who sleep on their sides. This is because holding a body pillow between your arms and legs helps to align the spine and relieve pressure in the lower back.
In the past seven years, we’ve rigorously tested hundreds of mattresses and sleep accessories, helping more than 15,500 people find the right bedroom enhancements. To ensure that we’re bringing you the best products available, we recently had product testers perform at-home evaluations of some of the most popular body pillows on the market to see if they are a buy or a bust. From these hands-on results — and with the guidance of our Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM — we compiled this list.
Read on for our top body pillow picks for every type of sleeper.

What I Looked for in Body Pillows
To find body pillows that will enhance your overall sleeping experience, we have our product experts and sleep science coaches test a list of options for their overall comfort and support. We further ask them to hone in on the following elements to guide you toward products that should work best for your personal preferences and sleep style:
Shape and size: Body pillows come in four basic shapes: rectangular, U-shaped, C-shaped, and J-shaped. Straight or rectangular pillows look like a longer version of your bed pillows and are often sought after by side sleepers seeking full body support. Pregnant women may prefer U-shaped body pillows that wrap around both sides of the body, as this design allows for back and belly support. Combination sleepers may also like this shape because they don’t have to move their pillow when changing positions. If you sleep in a smaller bed, you may want to consider the targeted support of a J-shaped pillow.
Materials: Since body pillows don’t usually use an additional cover or case, we want the outer liner to feel soft and inviting. We also evaluate the fill. The type of material used on the pillow’s interior will determine its loft, firmness, and overall feel.
Care: Although body pillow cases are available, unlike standard bed pillows, folks often opt to sleep sans additional cover on body pillows. Therefore, we considered ease of care by noting whether the cover was removable or washable, and in some cases, if you can wash the entire pillow.
Cooling: When your skin temperature is lower, you produce more the sleep hormone melatonin.Since a body pillow will likely contact more skin than a regular pillow, it’s important that it has cooling capabilities. We looked for pillows that have breathable covers, naturally cooling materials, and added cooling technologies.
It would be difficult to justify crowning any other pillow than the Coop Sleep Goods Original Adjustable Body Pillow as the best overall since it earned a perfect score in all of the categories we tested. My colleague and certified sleep science coach Nicole Davis slept with this body pillow and gave it a 5 out of 5 in price, materials, cooling, and care — ratings that catapulted it into the position of best overall body pillow.
Nicole, a side sleeper, said she had used cheap body pillows from Amazon with her three pregnancies and was excited to test this Coop Sleep Goods one. ”It is leaps and bounds above any body pillow I’ve tried in the past,” she said. “It feels soft and durable, the cooling effect is amazing, and it helped me get better sleep.”
One of the features Nicole appreciated the most was the unique fill adjustability. By allowing you to add or remove some of the proprietary blend of shredded memory foam and microfiber clusters, this pillow flexes its versatility. “I like how you can adjust it to make it a good fit for different preferred sleeping positions,” Nicole said. “Plus, it’s easy to fluff up when you make your bed the next day — no lumps or depressions to be found.”

Nicole was also surprised by how impressive she found the body pillow’s cooling capabilities. She noted that the case, made with a polyester/bamboo-derived blend, stays nice and cool, and that she didn’t have any issues with overheating.
However, as much as Nicole liked this pillow, she did give it a minor ding. “This isn’t unique to this body pillow, but it is hard to move it at night,” she said. “When I switch to the other side, I have to take the pillow with me, and because it feels so substantial, it’s annoying to get re-situated. Other than that, though, I enjoy this pillow a lot! It’s a great value.”
The Coop Sleep Goods website reviews match Nicole’s evaluations, awarding it 4.8 out of 5 stars. One client stated that it was a half-inch shorter than the stated length but that it still worked for her 6’2” husband.
Universally appealing, medium-firm body pillow that uses proprietary TEMPUR material for the fill. It’s solid construciton helps keep spines aligned, easing back pain.
If you’re looking for a sturdy body pillow that offers full body support and can help relieve back pain, check out the Tempur-Pedic Body Pillow, made from high-density memory foam. Product tester Matt Schickling slept with this luxury body pillow and provided me with his expert evaluations. Matt enjoyed how it contoured to his body but still offered him all-over support. Matt gave it at least 4 stars in price, materials, cooling, care, and experience.
It was quickly evident to Matt that the body pillow was made with quality materials, a cornerstone of Tempur-Pedic products. “The cover is thick, but breathable with some venting in the knitted design, and the fill has that classic plush foam feel that Tempur is known for,” he said. As a “heavyweight” sleeper who weighs over 230 pounds, Matt appreciated how the Tempur-Pedic was supportive enough to ease some pressure points along his back when he used it. However, he also thought its medium firmness should appeal to lighter sleepers with back pain, as well.
A closer look at the luxurious cover of the Tempur-Pedic Body Pillow.
Memory foam has a tendency to trap body heat, so although Matt had some slight trepidation about this body pillow’s cooling capabilities, he was ultimately pretty impressed and gave it a 4 in this category. “The vented knit cover prevents the pillow from getting too hot,” he said. “It’s an intentionally breathable design, necessary for a pillow primarily made of foam — or what Tempur calls ‘Tempur Material’.” When left untouched, Matt said that this pillow remained at room temperature. “It’s not especially cool, but I was impressed that it doesn’t heat up too much for a foam design.”
The Tempur-Pedic Body Pillow is also a good fit for those seeking easy care. The knit cover is removable and can be machine-washed. Tempur-Pedic recommends washing and drying on cool, but says that air-drying is best. The care instructions state that you shouldn’t “over-dry” the cover, nor use chlorine products or harsh stain removers.
The biggest issues we had with this pillow fall outside of its performance. The cost is a little high at $199 for one and $289 for a bundle of two. Matt said, “I’d really only call it a ‘value’ at the $289-for-two price, but this product is not one you’d usually buy two of — and that still makes them around $145 a piece.”
Also, after considering the return policy, warranty, and ease of contacting the company, Matt gave Tempur-Pedic a 3.5 out of 5 for customer service. The main reason for the 1.5-point deduction was that you can’t return the product, and although there is a 5-year limited warranty, it basically only covers manufacturing defects. However, Matt did appreciate that the site had a live chat and prominently displayed phone numbers for product support.
The reviews on the Tempur-Pedic website and Amazon tend to match up with Matt’s findings. This body pillow received a 4.3 on Tempur-Pedic’s website, and Amazon’s customer review summary stated that buyers loved the durability of the foam and appreciated its size. Others noted that it was expensive and too firm for a body pillow.
This body pillow combines a memory foam and down-alternative blend with a cool-to-the-touch cover, offering full-body support and temperature regulation for hot sleepers.
Using a blend of memory foam and polyester down alternative, plus a cover designed to wick away moisture and promote air flow, the Sleep Number Cool ComfortFit propelled its way to our selection as the best cooling body pillow. However, not only did tester and certified sleep science coach Livvi DiCiccio give this pillow a 5 out of 5 for cooling — it also earned a 4 or higher across all of our testing categories, including perfect scores in price, materials, and care.
If you’re like me and find yourself kicking the covers off in the middle of the night, you don’t want to deal with a body pillow that makes your temperature soar. Livvi said that from the onset, the Cool ComfortFit felt cool to the touch. “I used it alongside some flannel sheets I was also testing out, and when the sheets got too hot, I would cling to the pillow to cool down,” she said. She felt the polyester and polyethylene fiber cover made a huge difference in coolness.
Livvi said that she previously thought all body pillows were of the cringe-worthy cartoon character variety found at big box stores, so she was flabbergasted when she saw the $120 price tag on the ComfortFit. However, after testing it, she thinks that is a fair price. “This pillow is big, thick, and super-comfortable,” she said. “All foams used in the pillow are also CertiPUR-US certified (meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals), and it even comes in a carrying case.”

The cooling cover can be machine-washed and thrown in the dryer, which Livvi appreciated and thinks other consumers will too. She noted that the pillow has to be spot-cleaned, but the cover should protect it from most stains. “Plus, I don’t think this bad boy is fitting into a standard-size washing machine, so I am not mad about these care instructions,” she added.
Although the ComfortFit retains its shape well, Livvi cautioned that its thickness may cause some difficulty for petite sleepers, so she subtracted a point from her overall experience. “Sometimes, I found it difficult to throw my leg over it, which might be more of a feat if you’re already asleep,” she said. “I’m 5’5″, about average for a woman in the U.S., so it’s not like I’m tiny. But if you’re smaller than me, this pillow might seem gargantuan.”
Customer service was the only other category in which the pillow earned a score lower than a 4.5. Livvi gave Sleep Number’s customer service a 4 out of 5. Although she appreciated its generous 100-night sleep trial, a rarity for pillows, she believes that the pillow will easily outlast its limited one-year warranty. She appreciated that the website had both a chatbot and dedicated hours to call or chat with an agent online, but noted that the call hours were considerably shorter than the online chat.
This oversized body pillow combines a breathable bamboo viscose shell with a plush down alternative fill for cool, supportive sleep. It offers plush, breathable support, making it ideal for side sleepers and those looking for a luxurious option.
Once one of your products has been chosen as a “favorite thing” of Oprah’s (like Cozy Earth’s bamboo sheets, pajamas, and joggers), there is undoubtedly pressure to make sure all of your offerings live up to this lofty title. Much like Ms. Winfrey’s other faves, the brand’s Bamboo Down Alternative Body Pillow, our pick for best luxury body pillow, is soft and luxurious. This full-body pillow earned flawless care, experience, and customer experience scores from tester Kate Meier. It also got a 4 or above in cooling and price.
After sleeping with this pillow, Kate got right to the point. “We LOVE this pillow!” she said. “My kids both have body pillows, which are just the budget-friendly ones you can get from a superstore. So to bring this luxurious sleep friend into our home has been quite a treat, and everyone wants to claim it.” Unlike many of the other pillows on this list, the Cozy Earth model isn’t made from memory foam, which Kate appreciated. She said that the bamboo viscose and recycled polyester felt like sleeping on a fluffy cloud — and as a side sleeper, she thought it was perfect for putting between her knees.

In another departure from many of the other pillows on the list, you can throw the Bamboo Down Alternative into the washing machine. Kate tested this out and said that there were no issues after doing so. However, she noted that she also got the machine-washable Cozy Earth pillow case, and to make laundry day simpler, she usually just washes that when the pillow needs freshening up.
One of the main reasons this body pillow was such a big hit with Kate and her family is that it is made with quality materials that give it a high-end, luxurious feel. Kate described it as the definition of what “pillowy” should feel like. With all of this in mind, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that this body pillow comes with a hefty price tag.
It received a 4 out of 5 for price because it costs $219 and does not have certifications such as CertiPUR-US. “Otherwise, this is a prime example of if you want quality, be ready to pay for quality,” Kate said. She followed that up by saying that if you’re not concerned with the lack of certification and have the disposable income for an item such as this, it is well worth the price.
Although Kate said that the Bamboo Alternative body pillow didn’t make her hotter at night, it wasn’t as cooling as she had hoped for such a costly pillow that uses temperature-regulating bamboo throughout the construction. However, this disappointment was tempered by the fact that Cozy Earth offers a 100-night sleep trial. This means that you can try this body pillow out for over three months to see if it feels worth it.
Our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, also stressed the importance of quality sleep accessories for your overall sleep health. “Products like body pillows can comfort and support you, giving you less reason to struggle to fall asleep,” he said. “If the texture or temperature of your sheets, pillows, or body pillows bothers you, you may struggle to fall asleep, so it’s important to pick something that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.”
The Parachute Body pillow is a luxurious and comfortable supporting pillow for side sleepers and pregnant people. Made with a soft, down-alternative fill and a breathable cotton cover, this pillow provides the perfect amount of support for a good night’s sleep.
If your body pillow causes you to sniffle and sneeze, you’re unlikely to get a good night’s rest. Luckily, Parachute offers a down alternative body pillow that is hypoallergenic, meaning you can cuddle up without worrying about triggering your allergies. Certified sleep science coach Riley Otis tested this body pillow, which is filled with natural down-mimicking microfiber and covered in cotton sateen, and gave it a 5 out of 5 in materials, price, and care and a 4.5 in experience.
Since Riley has personally tested dozens of mattresses and sleep accessories, I knew that we had a star on our hands when her first response about this Parachute product was, “I LOVE this body pillow.” She followed that up by saying that her favorite feature of this pillow is its perfect loft. “I can wrap my legs and arms around it and comfortably place my head on it,” she said. “It’s pretty thick, but the down alternative material compresses when applying pressure, so it adjusts to the perfect height.”
One of our testers pressing into the insert of the Parachute Down Alternative Body Pillow.
As much as she liked this squishy, huggable pillow, she deducted a half point because she didn’t find it gave her the extra support needed to use it as a backrest when sitting in bed. “Since it’s so fluffy, I sink right through when I try to lean back,” she said. However, the Parachute Body Pillow did earn 5 stars for its ease of care. “You can throw the whole pillow in the washing machine, making care a breeze,” Riley said. If you do so, you should use a mild detergent and a cold water cycle. The manufacturer also recommends tumble drying with a wool dryer ball to help distribute the fill. This pillow can also be spot-cleaned as needed.
If you’re worried about the Parachute pillow causing overheating, rest easy. “Although this pillow doesn’t contain any specific cooling technology, most sleepers will be just fine adding this to their bed,” Riley said. She added that the cotton cover was crisp, breathable, and temperature-neutral. However, she dinged it a point, bringing its cooling score down to a 4 out of 5, because she had some concerns about the microfiber fill heating up. “I don’t see this as an issue for most folks, but extra extra-hot sleepers may want to find an alternative or use a body pillow cover made with a cooling fabric to keep them from getting too sweaty.”
Although Riley gave the materials and price perfect scores, she was not impressed with the overall customer service. The Parachute body pillow comes with a 3-year limited warranty and is eligible for returns within 60 days of receipt. However, shipping and handling fees are non-refundable, and there is a $20 fee or 15 percent of the order total (whichever is greater) for “fast shipping.” Riley said, “I just think this is kind of ridiculous.”
Body pillows typically benefit side sleepers most, helping the shoulders, hips, and spine stay aligned. Dr. Dasgupta reminded us that the way you sleep affects the kind of pillows that work for you, stating, “Side sleepers may need a thicker body to pillow that helps keep their spine aligned”. So I asked product expert and side sleeper Kayla Godfrey to see if the Buffy Body Pillow improved her sleep quality. Considering that Kayla gave the Buffy a 5 out of 5 in price, materials, care, and most importantly, experience, it’s easy to see why we awarded the Buffy Body Pillow as our best of the best for side sleepers.
Even before taking this body pillow for a nocturnal spin, Kayla was impressed with its high-quality materials. She appreciated that the pillow’s shell is woven from earth-friendly Tencel, which feels soft and luxurious. Once she snuggled in with it, she said, “This pillow felt great. It has a balanced weight, and it conforms to my body very nicely.”
Our tester Kayla Godfrey resting on the Buffy Body Pillow.
She also tested the optional cover and said she liked how well it fit the pillow and felt incredibly silky and soft. However, she noted that this cover will cost you extra at checkout. When I checked the price of the pillow and cover, I was a little shocked that there wasn’t a significant price difference between the two. Although Kayla gave it high marks, I still have a hard time paying almost as much for the case as the pillow.
However, if you’re a particularly hot sleeper, the cover’s price may be well worth it. Kayla said, “The pillow itself feels temperature neutral, but the cover had a pleasing cool-to-the-touch feel.” Without the cover, she gave the pillow a 4 out of 5 in cooling, stating that it didn’t heat up overnight and did a great job of keeping her body temperature-neutral. When she used the Eucalyptus-derived cover, she pumped the cooling score up to a 4.5.
When it comes to care, there was a significant difference in product care and customer care. The Buffy Body Pillow got high marks from our tester regarding ease of cleanup. Kayla loved that both the cover and the pillow were machine-washable. “I like that I can easily wash the cover whenever I like and throw the whole pillow in for an occasional deep clean,” she said. However, she felt Buffy’s customer service department left a little to be desired. She appreciated the brand’s 50-night risk-free trial and that Buffy will pay for return shipping if you decide not to keep it, but deducted a couple of points because of the time it took her to get a response to an email.
Considering that body pillows can offer expectant mothers benefits such as ergonomic support, pressure point reduction, and spinal alignment, I asked a pregnant colleague, Madison Muire, to test a U-shaped pillow to see if it should be considered for our roundup of the best body pillows.
This memory foam body pillow missed the cutline because our tester didn’t quite find the support she wanted. Although she thought it was a good body pillow overall, it was a little heavy to maneuver easily. She wants a “pregnancy pillow to make me feel like I’m elevated a bit, and this was, all and all, pretty flat.”
How We Picked and Tested These Body Pillows
To ensure that we could give you a comprehensive overview of each body pillow, we had expert product testers, certified sleep science coaches, and even a pregnant colleague take these pillows home and sleep with them for at least a week. In addition to their overall experience, we asked if they would zero in on specific features of body pillows. Here are the primary factors we considered in our scoring.
Cooling
Since body pillows run the length of your body (or even encircle it), most people don’t want a pillow that causes them to heat up during the night. Therefore, we had testers note how the pillow felt when they initially lay on it and whether there were any discernible changes after they had slept with it. We also noted whether they used any specific cooling materials or technology.
A closer look at the Coop’s cooling cover.
Wash Care
Some pillows are spot-clean only or must be dry-cleaned, while others can be thrown in the washing machine on a regular ol’ cycle. Of course, finding the pillow that’s best for your body is the most important thing, but wash care is also an important factor to pay attention to. The truth is, not everyone has the means or the time to dedicate to complicated care instructions, so I suggest that you always check exactly how to care for your pillow before you make your purchase.
Materials
Although we believe each pillow on this list is a solid value, this doesn’t mean they are cheap. To ensure that you’re getting the best return on your investment, we had our testers note the types of materials used and if they thought they would hold up well under everyday wear and tear. If the materials were thought to be of poor quality or if they weren’t well-made, those pillows didn’t make our list.
What to Consider
When you’re shopping for body pillows, it’s important to note all the details that will guide you toward a model that perfectly matches your unique needs. We picked pillows that offer quality craftsmanship and reflect a wide range of preferences and body types. Of course, there are a few key elements to pay attention to when choosing the very best body pillow on the market.
Internal Fill
Nothing is stopping you from using a body pillow in every position you can think of, but they are ideal for side sleeping. With that in mind, I chose the materials that are best for relieving pressure when you’re lying in the lateral position. Each pillow’s internal fill conforms closely to your body’s natural curves and maintains shape throughout the night.
I find shredded memory foam fill to be the best option for snuggling and relieving pressure in my lower back. Shredded fill usually means better breathability, so you stay cucumber-cool throughout the night.
Some body pillows have adjustable fill. These pillows can be a great choice because taking out or adding filling allows you to adjust the height and heft. Whether you want to remove fill to lower the loft, or manipulate the fill within the pillow in order to adjust the firmness and feel, all you have to do is unzip, reach in, and fine-tune the stuffing to your liking.
Here are a few tricks of the trade: If you’re sleeping on your side, keep the pillow at full-loft capacity. This will help to relieve pressure in the shoulder and align the spine. If you’re going to use your body pillow for stomach sleeping, remove the internal fill until the loft is 2 inches or fewer to ensure your spine is aligned.
A closer look at the adjustable filling of the Coop.
Shape
Typically, body pillows come in three shapes — traditional, U-shaped, and C-shaped. The traditionally shaped pillow runs parallel with your body and offers more versatility when it comes to sleeping positions. You can hold it in front of you, let it rest behind you, or (if you’re like me) lie directly on top of it like it’s a miniature mattress.
Meanwhile, the U-shaped and C-shaped body pillows are often specifically marketed to pregnant women, as well as stomach sleepers and back sleepers who want to start sleeping on their sides for the health benefits. These pillows are designed to cradle you, and keep you completely surrounded in cushion.
The U-shaped construction offers equal pressure relief for both sides of your body and prevents you from rolling onto your stomach or back. It’s also usually long enough so that you can fully stretch out on it. Similarly, the C-shaped pillow provides pressure relief for both sides of your body, but can offer more support for your back or baby bump depending on how you position it.
Cover Fabric
To accommodate those prone to night sweats and menopausal women who experience hot flashes, I chose cover fabrics that are naturally moisture-wicking and breathable. Every pillow listed here is covered in a fabric designed to keep you feeling cool and dry. Additionally, we looked for pillows with cover fabrics that can be washed and dried by machine… because who wants to dry-clean their pillows every time they get dirty?
