Is Birch Eco-Rest a Good Pillow for You?

Depending how you sleep, you’ll have different needs from your pillow. Let’s go over who the Birch Eco-Rest is best for.

P1017050
The Birch Eco-Rest pillow.

Who should try the Birch Eco-Rest pillow

  • The Birch Eco-Rest pillow is a great choice for stomach sleepers. It has a lower loft and is quite soft, so no worries about your neck craning upwards.
  • If you like to shop eco-friendly, the Birch Eco-Rest uses a mix of recycled and organic materials to be a more Earth-friendly pillow.
  • This pillow is also a good option for hot sleepers, as the materials are breathable and prevent hot air from being trapped.

Who should not try the Birch-Eco Rest pillow

  • Side sleepers should steer clear of the Birch Eco-Rest. It’s not supportive enough to keep your head and neck in line with your spine if you’re a side sleeper.
  • If easy cleaning is a priority for you, this may not be the best pillow for you. The Birch Eco-Rest is a spot-clean only pillow.
  • If you like a firmer feel from your pillow, the Birch Eco-Rest likely won’t be a good fit. It has a classic “hotel pillow” feel — soft and fluffy.

What Does the Birch Eco-Rest Pillow Feel Like?

I tested the Birch Eco-Rest by sleeping on it for a few nights, so here are my takeaways. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, so you may have a different experience than I did.

Birch Eco-Rest Pillow Firmness

I usually rate a pillow’s firmness as either soft, medium, or firm. Each sleeping position is generally best suited to a different firmness — soft for stomach sleepers, medium for back sleepers, and firm for side sleepers.

P1017055
The Birch Eco-Rest has a soft feel.

Overall, I found the Birch Eco-Rest to have a soft feel. In fact, it’s one of the softer pillows I have tested. When I first laid my head down on this pillow, it immediately gave me that classic “hotel pillow” feel — downy and easy to sink right into.

The polyester fill doesn’t do much to keep your head and neck really elevated — much like real down, it compresses a lot underneath you.

Birch Eco-Rest Pillow Loft

Like firmness, each sleeping position usually sleeps most comfortably with a different loft. Loft refers to the height of a pillow and I generally categorize it as either low, medium, or high. The Birch Eco-Rest looks like it has a medium loft, but it’s so soft and compacts so much that the loft ends up being a lot lower once you’re actually lying on it.

Now let’s go over my experience with the Birch Eco-Rest in different sleeping positions.

Side — I didn’t find the Birch Eco-Rest to be very comfortable for side sleeping. It’s far too soft to offer enough support to keep your head and neck in line with your spine while sleeping on your side. For a better option, take a look at our best pillows for side sleepers.

Back — I think the Birch Eco-Rest is okay for back sleepers. It’s a bit softer than I would usually recommend, but I felt like my head and neck were aligned with my spine while lying on it, which is the most important thing to pay attention to when choosing a pillow.

Stomach — I thought the Birch Eco-Rest was fantastic for stomach sleeping. It’s super soft and compresses a lot beneath you, so the pillow doesn’t cause your neck to crane upwards.

Under the Arm — The Birch Eco-Rest is a good pillow for sleeping with under the arm. It’s very soft and huggable.

Between the Legs — I think the Birch Eco-Rest could work for sleeping with between your legs, but it is so soft and compressive that your legs might sink through and not get much pressure relief.

Is the Birch Eco-Rest Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?

I think the Birch Eco-Rest is a good option for hot sleepers. It doesn’t have any specific cooling features, but the organic cotton cover is breathable and the polyester fill should allow for airflow within the pillow. Basically, it doesn’t feel cool to the touch, but it maintains a nice, neutral temperature.

My Final Thoughts About the Birch Eco-Rest Pillow

If you like a classic down or down alternative feel from your pillow, the Birch Eco-Rest is a great option. It uses recycled and natural materials to be eco-friendly and it’s a good option for hot sleepers, as it is made with breathable materials.

I think this pillow is very well-suited to stomach sleepers, as it is soft and compresses beneath you while lying on your stomach. It’s very fluffy and easy to sink into, and doesn’t cause the neck to crane upwards. It can also work for back sleepers, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it for side sleepers, as it doesn’t offer enough support for their heads and necks.

My biggest con for this pillow is it is spot-clean only, so it may not be the best option for those with allergies or who like to wash their pillow frequently.

Birch Eco-Rest Pillow Vs

Now let’s compare the Birch Eco-Rest to two other organic pillows: the Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex pillow and Saatva Latex pillow.

Birch Eco-Rest Pillow vs Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow

P1017142
The Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex pillow.
  • Like the Eco-Rest, this Brooklyn Bedding pillow has an organic cotton cover. But instead of a down alternative fill, this pillow has a natural Talalay latex core. Latex foam is made from the sap of rubber trees and Talalay is a specific form of latex production.
  • The latex gives this pillow a buoyant and supportive, but pressure relieving feel. It’s similar in feeling to memory foam, but it’s much bouncier and much cooler, as latex maintains a naturally cool temperature.
  • The Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex pillow also comes in two different loft options, low and high, making it a great option for all three sleeping positions.

Birch Eco-Rest Pillow vs Saatva Latex Pillow

Squishing the Saatva Pillow
The Saatva Latex pillow.
  • The Saatva has a soft to medium-firm feel, thanks to its hybrid design. It has an organic cotton cover, an outer pillow layer stuffed with microdenier fiber down alternative, and an inner pillow core made with shredded Talalay latex.
  • It’s a good option for back sleepers in particular, but it can also work for side sleepers.
  • The Saatva Latex pillow is also a good pick for hot sleepers, as the latex core is cool and temperature regulating. Plus, shredded latex allows for even more airflow throughout the pillow.
