In an industry with largely indistinguishable offerings, Purple has always stood out. It’s all thanks to its proprietary GelFlex Grid, a durable elastic polymer designed for cushioning comfort, instant response, and pressure relief. The Purple GelFlex Grid is included in every Purple mattress, including the flagship Purple Mattress — the mattress that introduced the technology to the world. But does it really deliver on better sleep?

To find out, and to see what it actually feels like to sleep on a flexible polymer grid, the Sleepopolis team of sleep experts put the Purple Mattress through a battery of tests based on our medically approved testing methodology. We assessed details like firmness, pressure relief, cooling ability, edge support, and more, to determine which sleepers might find their dreamiest nights on the Purple. After extensive testing, we found it most compatible for combination sleepers who prioritize ease of movement and average-weight back or stomach sleepers who prefer feeling on top of the mattress instead of sinking down into it.

With more than 10 years of mattress testing experience on over 330 mattresses, our team has the training and the knowledge to offer recommendations based on the Purple’s performance. And to ensure we’re bringing you the most well-rounded review of the Purple Mattress, we also consulted with Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM. Read on to see if this is the best mattress for you.

Purple Mattress Overview

The Purple Mattress is part of the brand’s Essential Collection. The mattress features two inches of GelFlex Grid along with two layers of foam support. Our lightweight tester, Riley Otis, found the mattress a true medium-firm during testing on her back and stomach, with a 6.5 firmness rating, but a touch firmer on her sides, with a firmness rating of 7. Still, she says her spine felt great on her side. Her hips and shoulders sunk in just slightly, with gentle cradling from the polymer grid, and her body weight felt evenly distributed.

At 9.25 inches, the Purple Mattress is on the shorter side — most bed-in-a-box mattresses range between 10 and 12 inches or taller. That can present an issue for sleepers with bigger frames and more body weight.

As for company policies, Purple is pretty typical. The Purple Mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and it’s backed by a 10-year warranty, both of which are fairly standard in the industry — neither the best offers out there, nor the worst.

During testing, the Purple performed best for pressure relief in the back sleeping position and responsiveness, with scores of 4.5 stars out of 5. It also got 3.5 stars for cooling ability, but only 2.67 stars for motion isolation. Overall, we gave the Purple Mattress a 3.5-star rating.

Purple Mattress Value

Value is a reference not just to the price of a given mattress, but to the fairness of that price based on material quality, mattress performance, and expected longevity. A queen-size Purple Mattress is priced at $1,499 before the brand’s frequent seasonal sales and discounts, which often bring the cost down to just under $1,000 for that size. It’s the cheapest Purple mattress you can buy, and it’s on the mid-to-lower end of the price spectrum compared to other brands and models.

In addition to its two-inch GelFlex Grid layer, the Purple has two foam layers. As a bonus, all of the polyurethane foams in Purple’s mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, indicating they’re free of harmful chemicals for people and the planet alike. Still, the lack of coils makes this an all-foam construction, which generally indicates a shorter lifespan than comparable hybrid mattresses. The polymer grid top layer, however, adds durability of its own. Based on our testing data and the mattress materials, we anticipate the Purple Mattress lasting between 7 to 10 years, depending on how well it’s maintained.

What Is the Purple Mattress Made Of?

We like to look below the cover, so to speak, so part of the testing process is cutting into the side of the mattress. That’s the best way of assessing the quality of individual layers. In the Purple, our testers found three layers: the GelFlex Grid on top with a perimeter layer of edge support foam, an adaptive polyurethane foam layer in the middle, and a firmer, taller polyurethane foam layer at the bottom. The mattress cover is a polyester/spandex blend, and the bottom panel, designed to minimize slippage, is a polyester/latex blend.

Cover – Our testers found the cover felt like a cotton/synthetic blend because it was pretty cool to the touch.

Comfort Layer This top layer is the GelFlex Grid, with a unique feel and very quick response time to pressure. According to the brand, it has a non-toxic wicking treatment.

Adaptive Layer – This polyfoam layer responds to the body’s curves to balance cushioning with support.

Support Layer – A firmer, thicker foam layer designed for support and durability.

Purple Mattress Firmness

Firmness is always a tricky category because it’s entirely subjective. How soft or firm a mattress feels depends on factors like your body weight and sleeping position. The industry standard is to rank firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest, but here’s the catch — individual interpretation means individual mattress ratings tend to vary. That’s because lightweight sleepers tend to find mattresses feel firmer than their firmness ratings, while heavyweight sleepers often find they feel softer.

Our lightweight tester, Riley, found the Purple Mattress had a true medium-firm feel when she tested it on her back and stomach. On her back, she reported that her spine felt aligned, but she lacked the weight to sink into the polymer grid enough to feel sufficient cushioning on her lumbar zone. Medium-weight back sleepers will likely fare better, but those with more weight or back pain may want to consider something with a little more cushioning. When she flipped to her stomach, she found the firmness much more accommodating. Her hips were comfortably cradled, without the sensation of digging in, but there’s a possibility that heavier stomach sleepers will need more support to maintain proper hip elevation.

For Riley, the Purple Mattress really shined when she tested it on her side. She says her spine felt great in this position, with her hips and shoulders sinking just slightly into the grid. Ultimately Riley rated the Purple’s firmness a 6.5 out of 10 on her back and a 7 on her side.

Purple Mattress Firmness

Purple Mattress Performance

Beyond construction and firmness, choosing a mattress comes down to its expected performance in categories like pressure relief, motion isolation, cooling ability, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. Sleepopolis testers Kenny Timper and Erin Chiles joined Riley in collecting data for the Purple Mattress based on subjective and objective tests. Below, find a brief summary of each category and a rundown of the Purple’s performance.

Purple Mattress Pressure Relief Performance

Pressure relief is one of the advertised benefits of the Purple GelFlex Grid. In fact, according to the brand, the grid is designed to maintain the natural curve of the spine and reduce pain by up to 40 percent based on an independent study. We had high expectations and the Purple Mattress delivered — somewhat. To fully assess pressure relief, we had two Sleepopolis testers independently assess the mattress in both side- and back-sleeping positions. Riley weighs less than 130 pounds, so she’s considered a lightweight tester, while Kenny is between 130 and 230 pounds, making him an average-weight sleeper. Generally, Riley experiences less sinkage during these tests than Kenny and finds mattresses feel firmer.

To evaluate pressure relief, both testers spent time lying on the Purple and paid close attention to points of building pressure and/or relief. Riley and Kenny both gave the mattress high marks for pressure relief in the back-sleeping position. Riley scored it a 4, while Kenny scored it a full 5 stars. “I thought the Purple filled out my lower lumbar area nicely,” Kenny said.

Riley found it a little less supportive, especially in the lumbar zone, which is reflected in her lower score. But she found it delivered much more pressure relief in the side-sleeping position, making it worthy of a score of 4.5 stars. “The mattress is doing a good job of contouring to the natural curve of my body in this position, so I think it could be great for side sleepers with hip or joint pain,” she says. According to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, sleepers with hip pain should prioritize a mattress that cushions pressure points without making you sink too much.

Kenny had the opposite experience. “I could feel the grid pushing against my hips, which wasn’t the most comfortable,” he said, though he noted that his shoulders felt fine. He gave the mattress a score of 2.5 for pressure relief in this position.

Overall, the Purple scored an average of 4.5 stars for pressure relief in the back-sleeping position and 3.75 stars for pressure relief when side sleeping. Based on our testing, it’s likely a good fit for average-weight back sleepers who have sufficient weight to sink into the grid layer and lightweight side sleepers who need gentle contouring around the hips and shoulders. Dr. Raj Dasgupta says a mattress designed to help mitigate pressure points should keep your spine properly aligned throughout the night, and that’s what our testers experienced in these body weight/sleeping position combinations.

PurpleMattressPressure

Purple Mattress Motion Isolation

Dr. Raj Dasgupta describes motion transfer as how the movement on one side of the mattress affects the other side and notes that the quality of a mattress is linked to its ability to effectively minimize this transfer. It’s a performance category that matters most to anyone who shares their bed with a partner or pet. When a mattress has low motion transfer, nighttime disruptions from a partner tossing and turning are reduced. But the opposite is also true — a mattress with high motion transfer can mean constant disruptions because the whole bed moves when a partner rolls over or flops back into bed after a middle-of-the-night bathroom break.

To assess motion isolation, we conduct a ripple test and a partner test. The Purple Mattress earned an average score of 2.5 out of 5 stars.

The ripple test involves a basin of water placed on one side of the bed. Our tester climbs in and out of the bed on the other side and energetically switches sleeping positions while observing the movement of the water in the basin. Minor ripples indicate good motion isolation, while major sloshing is a sign of poor motion isolation. Our tester Riley found the water very affected by her movement, beginning the instant she climbed onto the mattress and worsening as she changed positions. “The water was splashing up the side of the tub, indicating a lack of motion isolation,” she says. She gave the Purple Mattress 3 stars for the ripple test.

During the partner test, the basin is replaced by a tester. Riley lay on the bed blindfolded while Kenny climbed onto the bed next to her and moved from his back to his side to his stomach and back again. Riley indicated that she felt his movements by raising her hand — which stayed in the air from the moment he got into bed. “I could feel every move Kenny made when he was next to me,” she said. “I’m not even a light sleeper, but I think it’d get very annoying sleeping next to someone on this bed, especially if they toss and turn.” Riley scored the Purple Mattress 2 stars for the partner test.

With an average score of 2.5 stars, we would not recommend this mattress to couples who struggle with nighttime disruptions relating to tossing and turning.

Purple Mattress Responsiveness

Responsiveness is a measure of how quickly a mattress returns to its original shape after pressure is removed. The faster materials spring back after you roll over, for instance, the higher the response time. All-foam mattresses aren’t typically responsive at all, but the Purple Mattress has the GelFlex Grid — and it’s a game changer.

The Purple Mattress earned an average of 4.5 stars based on both a switch test and a bounce test. For the switch test, Kenny laid down on the mattress and rolled from his back to his side to his stomach. He observed how easy or challenging it was to transition between these sleeping positions, whether the mattress had any amount of bounce to further ease the switch, and if it felt like any materials were hampering his efforts. Kenny noted his surprise at how responsive the Purple felt. “Despite not having any innersprings, the grid made me feel lifted and ‘on top’ of the bed, which made it easy to roll around and move between different positions,” he said.

Sleepopolis tester Erin Chiles performed the bounce test. She dropped a 25-pound steel ball from 6 feet above the mattress and used a yardstick against the wall to measure the height of its bounce. The ball bounced 21.5 inches above the surface of the mattress, which is considered high bounce and further highlights the Purple’s responsiveness.

Purple Mattress Cooling

Cooling is another advertised benefit of the GelFlex Grid. While materials like memory foam have a reputation for trapping body heat, the grid has hundreds of individual air channels that may help dissipate excess heat. It’s an important consideration, since regulating temperature to reduce overheating plays an important role in a good night’s sleep. We assessed the Purple Mattress’s cooling prowess with a thermal gun test and scored it 3.5 stars out of 5.

With the thermal gun, we can record the surface temperature of the mattress. We take an initial read, then have a tester lie down on the mattress for five minutes before taking a second reading. An increase of less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling ability. An increase of 5 to 10 degrees is a sign of good cooling, while 10 to 15 degrees is considered decent cooling. If a mattress temperature increases by more than 15 degrees, it has poor cooling abilities.

Erin performed our thermal gun test. The Purple Mattress had a temperature of 66.8 degrees before she laid down. After five minutes, it had increased to 77.9 degrees, a difference of 11.1 degrees. That indicates decent cooling and earned the mattress a score of 3.5 stars.

During testing, Erin said she felt like the Purple Mattress maintained its coolness. “I didn’t feel sudden warmth, but rather a comfortable rise in temperature that stayed slightly to the cooler side,” she says. That’s likely thanks to the airflow-promoting GelFlex Grid. While polyurethane foam doesn’t trap heat as much as memory foam, it’s not nearly as breathable as coils.

If overheating isn’t a major concern, this mattress could be a good match. Our testers note it felt cool to the touch and while the temperature did increase, it was gradual and not overwhelming. But for those who regularly deal with night sweats, a cooling mattress for hot sleepers is likely a better choice.

Purple Mattress Edge Support

A mattress with strong edge support feels just as supportive around the perimeter as it does in the center. It’s an important feature for couples because it maximizes surface area and gives both partners more room to sleep comfortably. Edge support can also be an indication of durability, since weak edges on a mattress are more likely to have sagging issues in time.

Our team conducted two tests to evaluate edge support on the Purple Mattress: a seated test and a full body test. Overall, the mattress averaged 3.25 stars.

During the seated test, our tester sits on the edge of the mattress with their feet on the floor. Next, they rise to a standing position and then sit back down while paying close attention to the level of support they feel and whether it’s necessary to use their hands to push up to standing. When Riley performed this test, she was surprised by the Purple’s lack of support. “When I sat down, I immediately sank almost all the way to the base,” she says. The Purple is an all-foam mattress with a hyper-elastic polymer grid. While the brand says that it’s wrapped in edge support foam, it doesn’t seem to do much. Riley also notes that the transition and base polyfoam layers don’t seem very dense, so they didn’t do a great job of keeping her supported on the side. On the other hand, the GelFlex Grid is very bouncy, which helped propel her to a standing position. While she gave the Purple Mattress 3 stars for this test, people with mobility issues will very likely need stronger edges and should consider a hybrid mattress with reinforced coils around the perimeter.

Riley also tested edge support by laying on her back and stomach along the side of the mattress. While she felt more secure on the edge, she says she could tell that this part of the mattress wasn’t quite as supportive as the center. Still, she didn’t get the sense that she was going to fall off. But when she rolled to her side, she noticed significant collapsing in the Purple’s layers. “I felt like I might slide off the bed if I got too close,” she said. For this test, she gave the mattress 3.5 stars.

Purple Mattress Performance for Couples

We’ve highlighted features that are of particular concern to couples, like motion isolation and edge support. Cooling and responsiveness are important categories to consider as well. The combined body heat of two people can make a bed overheat much faster, so breathability and cooling ability are important considerations — especially if one or both of you is prone to night sweats. The Purple Mattress earned 3.5 stars here, meaning it’s neither especially warm nor particularly cooling.

Responsiveness is arguably the most important feature for sexually active couples, because it makes it easier for partners to move comfortably around the bed. Slow response time can make it feel like you’re trapped in the mattress, which is likely to distract from your amorous activities. The Purple Mattress earned one of its top scores here, with 4.5 stars.

Unfortunately, it’s lacking in edge support with 3.25 stars and motion isolation with 2.5 stars. That means couples will need to weigh their priorities to decide if the Purple Mattress meets their needs.

Other Performance Factors to Consider

There are a lot of factors to consider when you’re buying a new mattress, and our team conducted additional tests to give you all the information you need to make an educated decision. Here’s what else we assessed.

Sex

Our score for a mattress that’s compatible with sex is an average of three other scores: responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. The Purple Mattress earned 3.75 stars, which makes it a pretty decent mattress for sexual activities. It has a high response time, so there’s no risk of feeling trapped in its layers, and the GelFlex Grid layer should promote just enough airflow. While the edge support is lacking, couples should be quite comfortable in the center of the bed.

Noise

We didn’t anticipate much noise, if any, from the Purple Mattress, thanks to its combination of gel grid and foam layers. Erin Chiles tried her best to jump, roll, and otherwise trigger the Purple bed into a squeak or the slow hiss of air escaping foam to no avail. She gave the mattress 5 stars for noise — no matter how much you toss and turn, the Purple won’t make a peep.

Base Compatibility

We evaluate mattresses for their compatibility with adjustable bases at our testing studio by elevating the head and foot of the bed and using the zero-gravity preset. As expected, the Purple Mattress conformed very well with the base. That’s due to both its shorter stature and its flexible layers. “There was very little separation from the base once the base was elevated to different positions,” says Erin. The Purple is also compatible with any firm, flat foundation. The brand notes that foundations constructed with slats shouldn’t be more than 3.5 inches apart.

Durability

Considering the upfront cost, it’s reasonable to expect a mattress to perform well for years to come. It’s difficult to predict longevity, but we can assess durability by considering material quality, edge support, and the warranty. As with most things, high-quality materials simply outlast cheaper versions because they’re less likely to deteriorate as quickly. A strong support system, including around the perimeter, resists premature sagging, while a warranty is an indication of how long the company expects its mattress to perform.

While the polyurethane layers in the Purple Mattress aren’t the most durable material out there, the GelFlex Grid layer should have no issues performing for many years. Edge support is a bit of an issue, but that’s more because the gel grid is so elastic and less an indicator of inferior materials. While it is an all-foam mattress, which makes strong support even more important, the combination of materials should perform as expected for at least 7 years and possibly longer. It does have a 10-year warranty that protects against workmanship and material defects, but note that things like localized firmness changes and local body impressions or indentations are explicitly not covered.

Purple Mattress Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Personal details, like your body type, weight, and sleeping position, play a direct role in how a mattress feels. Below, I’ve broken things down to give you an idea of how well the Purple Mattress will perform based on your body and sleep style

Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).

As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Is the Purple Mattress a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers will probably find they don’t have the weight to sink into the GelFlex Grid enough for cushioning in the lumbar zone.
  • Light Side Sleepers – This mattress is a great fit, with enough cushioning on the hips and shoulders and ample support for a neutral spine.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers Stomach sleepers should likewise fare well, with plenty of cradling around the hips and sufficient alignment.
Purple Mattress Stomach

Is the Purple Mattress a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?

  • Average-Weight Back Sleepers – This group will find plenty of support around the low back and just enough cushioning to fill in the space under the lumbar zone.
  • Average-Weight Side Sleepers – Side sleepers with sensitive joints probably won’t be as comfortable, since the GelFlex Grid might be detectable against the hips in particular, but those who don’t have joint issues should be all right.
  • Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers Stomach sleepers will appreciate feeling “on top” of the Purple Mattress, with enough support to keep the hips from feeling like they’re sinking below the upper body.

Is the Purple Mattress a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers in any sleeping position will probably find this mattress lacks the height and support they need to maintain a neutral spine. We don’t recommend the Purple Mattress for heavy sleepers.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.

My Final Thoughts About the Purple Mattress

Looking for the highlights of the Purple Mattress? Here’s where it performed well, where it fell short, and who might benefit most from sleeping on it.

Who I Recommend the Purple Mattress For

  • Combination sleepers will really appreciate the quick response time, but it’s best for average-weight sleepers who alternate between their backs and stomachs or lightweight sleepers who move between their sides and stomachs.
  • Average-weight back or stomach sleepers, who will find excellent support for the hips and lumbar zone.
  • Lightweight side sleepers, who will find their hips and shoulders gently cradled and their spine nicely supported.

Those who have or want an adjustable base and need a compatible mattress.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Purple Mattress For

  • Heavyweight sleepers in any sleep position just won’t get the support they need on this 9.25-inch mattress.
  • Couples who need excellent motion isolation will probably find this mattress doesn’t meet their needs.

Purple Mattress vs. Competitor

If you’re looking for pressure relief and responsiveness, you have options beyond the Purple Mattress. Here’s how it compares to the Saatva Classic, a popular luxury innerspring mattress.

Purple Mattress vs Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with two layers of coils and zoned support. It’s a premium mattress with a plush Euro top and a choice of both firmness and height. Plus, each mattress comes with white glove delivery, so it’s not simply dropped off on your doorstep in a bag. Both the Saatva Classic and the Purple Mattress earned high marks for responsiveness and pressure relief and low scores for motion isolation. But the Classic outperformed the Purple on edge support and slightly edged it out in cooling.

  • Price: The Saatva Classic is priced roughly $500 higher than the Purple Mattress. A queen is $2,099 before sales pricing, but like Purple, Saatva has frequent sales that bring the price down by several hundred dollars. While you’ll pay more for a Saatva, the mattress has a generous 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.
  • Sleeping position: The Saatva Classic is a great match for back sleepers in all weight classes, and lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers will also find it supportive. The Purple Mattress accommodates average back and stomach sleepers nicely, but it’s not up to snuff for heavier sleepers.
  • Cooling: The Saatva Classic scored slightly higher than the Purple, with 4 stars. It has a coil-on-coil construction, which combats heat retention and promotes airflow.
  • Body weight: With its sturdy innersprings, the Saatva Classic can support more weight.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“The Saatva Classic’s springy surface is perfect for combination sleepers looking for ease of movement as they toss and turn throughout the night. Also, back sleepers are perhaps best suited to the bed’s lifted support and balanced cushioning from the pillow top.” – Livvi DiCicco, staff writer and certified sleep science coach

Other Models from Purple

Purple has three separate collections if you’re weighing your options within the brand. Here’s how the flagship Purple Mattress compares to the PurplePlus, the top model in the same collection.

Purple Mattress vs PurplePlus

The PurplePlus is also part of the Essential Collection. It has a plusher feel, better cooling ability and more motion isolation, but it shares the same general construction: a 2-inch GelFlex Grid layer and two layers of foam. It’s taller at 11 inches.

  • Price: The PurplePlus is the more expensive option at $1,899 ($1,499 after sales pricing), but it comes with the same 100-day trial window and 10-year warranty.
  • Sleeping position: Since it has a plusher feel and taller height, the PurplePlus is a good fit for side sleepers.
  • Cooling: A layer of comfort foam below the GelFlex Grid gives the PurplePlus more cooling prowess. It dissipates heat a little better than the standard foam in the original Purple.
  • Body weight: Heavyweight sleepers will probably do better on taller, thicker mattresses than either of these options.

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.

Purple Mattress FAQs

Is the Purple mattress worth it?

If responsiveness and pressure relief are important to you, the Purple Mattress can be a good fit. Look for sales pricing to get the best deals.

Is Purple better than Casper?

Purple has a bouncier feel with more pressure relief, while Casper has a more traditional memory foam mattress feel. If you like responsiveness and pressure relief, Purple could be a good fit. If you prefer a softer, more balanced foam feel, Casper is probably the better choice.

What are the downsides of Purple mattresses?

Purple mattresses can be surprisingly heavy, thanks to the GelFlex Grid, which makes them harder to move. Plus, the grid itself gives the mattress a unique feel that not everyone likes.

What is the lifespan of a Purple mattress?

You can generally expect a Purple mattress to last between 7 and 10 years. It should last a little longer than typical all-foam beds because of its durable polymer grid.
