If frequent night sweats and overheating are preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep, a cooling mattress topper may be your saving grace. While you can always purchase a new mattress, simply adding a cooling topper can save you money while also promoting cooler nights. These toppers often have cooling infusions or naturally breathable materials that prevent heat from getting trapped, while also drawing heat away from the body.

In our Charlotte, NC, testing studio, our team of expert testers and certified sleep science coaches evaluated over 25 mattress toppers using a rigorous testing methodology. Not only did we put these toppers’ cooling abilities to the test, but we also tested them for a variety of factors most important to sleepers, such as pressure relief, support, responsiveness, and more.

Additionally, we consulted with our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who offered expert insight into the best materials for cooling, as well as what sleepers should look for when choosing a mattress topper.

Out of all the toppers we tested, I handpicked the top six that performed the best on our cooling test, with each earning a score of 4.5 stars or higher for this category. Additionally, I selected toppers that balanced support and pressure relief to ensure you’re not just cool, but comfortable.

Our Top Pick for Cooling Mattress Toppers

I picked the Helix GlacioTex Premium Mattress Topper as the best overall cooling topper because its cool-to-the-touch cover and airy microcoils provided excellent temperature regulation, earning 5 stars for cooling. Additionally, this topper offers 5-star support whether you opt for the Luxury Soft or Luxury Firm model.

What I Looked for in the Best Cooling Mattress Toppers

  • Temperature Regulation: When considering the best cooling mattress toppers I looked for materials that are naturally breathable, such as latex or cotton. I also paid attention to any cooling infusions, such as gel, copper, and graphite. Our testers also evaluated cooling by feeling the cover, doing a rest test, and measuring the change in temperature using a thermal gun. Each mattress topper I chose earned a cooling score of 4.5 stars or higher.
  • Pressure Relief: When adding an additional layer to your mattress, it’s important that it’s still able to provide comfort along the body’s sensitive pressure points. When selecting toppers, I chose options made from contouring materials that add enough cushioning at the hips, shoulders, and lower back to prevent pressure from building.
  • Support: Even if you’re seeking a soft mattress topper, support isn’t something to skip. I looked for toppers that earned at least 4 stars when our testers evaluated them in this category. This ensures that no matter the firmness level, you’re still experiencing enough lift to keep the spine in neutral alignment, thus preventing pain.

When crowning the best overall cooling mattress topper, I not only focused on exceptional temperature regulation, but I also looked for standout scores in our other testing categories that indicate it’s a good choice for a variety of sleepers. The Helix GlacioTex Premium mattress topper ranks highest on this list because its cooling cover and breathable 4-star materials helped it earn 5 out of 5 stars on our cooling test. Additionally, the topper is offered in two firmness levels — Luxury Plush and Luxury Firm — so you can choose the amount of support ideal for your body type and preferred sleeping position.

As the best cooling topper, the Helix is a great choice for hot sleepers looking to prevent overheating. The topper’s cover provides some initial cooling due to Helix’s proprietary GlacioTex fabric, which the brand claims helps draw heat away from the body. When our in-house expert tried this topper, she said, “It has a super cool-to-touch-feel when first lying down on it, and it doesn’t seem to retain my body heat.” As she continued to lie on the topper, its temperature rose slightly; however, it never teetered above temperature neutral. Since the topper was able to regulate her temperature, she rated it 5 stars for cooling.

In addition to a silky, cooling cover, the Helix GlacioTex has other unique materials. While many toppers are made from just foam, this product has a hybrid construction. While the topper contains two foam layers, a sturdy 0.75-inch layer of steel micro coils is sandwiched in between to provide additional support along the lumbar spine. While the Luxury Plush model has a softer top layer of foam and provides more cushioning, the Luxury Firm has a firmer foam layer that provides more lift. Regardless of which firmness option you choose, you’ll benefit from the durable 4-star materials, which obtained a GREENGUARD Gold certification.

In our studio, we tested the Luxury Firm model and found it slightly firmer than average, falling at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This means it still offers some soft pressure relief, but is just a touch firmer than a true medium feel. Our in-house expert tester felt balanced on this topper, saying, “It has the right amount of sinkage and cradles my lower back, which feels very comfortable.” We ended up rating the Luxury Firm model 5 stars for support because it adds a bit of extra lift along the spine to help maintain proper alignment without sacrificing comfort.

Since it’s a premium cooling hybrid, this Helix topper may be out of budget for some shoppers. At full price, a queen size currently costs slightly under $500. However, Helix is known for its frequent ongoing sales and discounts, so you’ll likely find this topper for around $375 or less.

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoils Mattress Topper – Best Cooling Hybrid Mattress Topper

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper

Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper

With a thin layer of microcoils added to its construction, this topper is designed to provide enhanced support while still offering some nice cushioning.

Check Price

Hybrid mattresses combine layers of contouring memory foam with sturdy innerspring coils to create a pressure-relieving, yet supportive sleep environment. According to our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, “This construction aims to offer a balance between firmness and softness, making it suitable for various sleep preferences.” Toppers can also have a hybrid construction, typically using smaller springs called microcoils to add a bit more support to the structure. When it comes to cooling hybrid mattress toppers, the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoils Mattress Topper is a stellar option, earning a 5-star rating in both cooling and support.

As a hybrid topper, the Brooklyn Bedding’s microcoil layer is the star of the show. Individually wrapped and sandwiched between two layers of foam, these microcoils pack a serious punch when it comes to support, which our expert tester Sosha Lewis rated 5 stars. She said, “The coils actually push back when pressure is applied, and you can feel them adding to the alignment and support.”

Part of the stellar support also came from the top layer of foam, which felt slightly firmer than average. This layer’s firmness is actually customizable at checkout, and you can choose between Soft and Firm. We chose the Firm model, which we rated a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. While it still provides a bit of cushioning around the shoulders, it’s more supportive than pressure-relieving overall. If you prefer a bit more plushness, I’d recommend choosing the Soft model.

While the coils helped provide some great spinal support, they also contributed to the overall breathability of the topper. Since foam can sometimes be known to trap heat, the small layer of coils adds a bit of space inside the topper for air to flow in and out. When Sosha first lay down, she said, “The cover feels cool to the touch, and the microcoil layer is definitely helping regulate my temperature.”

Sosha further tested the topper using a thermal gun to measure the initial temperature of the mattress topper. After lying down for five minutes, she measured the topper’s temperature again and discovered it had only heated up by 3.5 degrees. These are excellent results, earning the Brooklyn Bedding topper 5 stars for cooling.

Keep in mind, even microcoils provide a decent amount of bounce. While we think this is great for combination sleepers, as the 5-star responsiveness helps aid the transition between sleeping positions, those seeking deep, slow-moving sinkage may not be the ideal candidates for this hybrid topper.

Saatva Organic Quilted Topper – Best Cooling Mattress Topper for Couples

Boasting an eco-conscious design, this topper is breathable, responsive, and environmentally friendly.

If you share your bed with another person, there are some additional factors to keep in mind when choosing a mattress topper. Cooling is still important to consider, as two bodies heat up quicker than just one. Yet, motion isolation and responsiveness are also crucial factors. If you or your partner typically wake up by the other’s movement, finding a bed that reduces motion transfer can help you sleep more soundly. Additionally, responsiveness can help sexually active couples easily move around. For couples, I recommend the Saatva Organic Quilted topper, which not only earned 4.5 stars for cooling, but also racked up 5 stars for both motion isolation and responsiveness.

A man lying on his back on the Saatva Organic Quilted Topper.
One of our testers trying out the Saatva Organic Quilted Topper at home.

The Saatva Organic Quilted topper performed exceptionally during testing, largely due to the quality of its materials, which we rated 4.5 stars. Made with GOTS-Certified latex, cotton, and wool, Saatva bills it as its most eco-friendly mattress topper. Our expert tester Melanie Kassel was most impressed by the latex layer, saying, “The natural responsiveness of the latex means I get the best of both worlds on this topper: a nice bit of cushion, plus all the necessary snap-back to change positions easily. Latex truly feels like a magical material.” Since the latex provided buoyancy that couples can appreciate, she rated its responsiveness 5 stars.

Latex is also known for its natural cooling properties so it’s usually beneficial for hot-sleeping couples. When Melanie and her partner placed the Saatva topper on their bed, they thought it made the surface of the bed cooler. After a few weeks of sleeping on the topper, she rated the cooling abilities 4.5 stars, saying, “It’s the middle of the summer and I haven’t been waking up as often due to the heat.”

Since latex is so buoyant, it can sometimes allow for motion to travel across the bed, affecting the sleeper on the other side. However, Melanie thought the soft down alternative filling and quilted cover helped muffle some of her partner’s larger movements, so she rated the Saatva topper 5 stars for motion isolation.

The soft quilted cover not only helped isolate motion, but it also added some plushness to the bed. While the bottom layers of the topper are firmer, the quilted cover makes the bed feel more medium-soft, falling at a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Melanie describes the feeling as “weightless without slacking in the support department.” Although it doesn’t provide super firm lift, Melanie still rated its support 5 stars.

Luxury, organic, and latex toppers are typically the most expensive options on the market, and the Saatva Organic Quilted topper is no different. For a queen size, the topper retails for $995, yet is often on sale for around $770. While the price is high, so are the quality of its materials and its overall performance. However, this topper may be too pricey for some shoppers.

If you’re looking for tons of deep sinkage and body contouring, a memory foam topper might be the perfect pick. According to Dr. Dasgupta, memory foam is one of the best materials for pressure relief because it’s able to cushion and cradle the body’s sensitive joints. My favorite all-foam topper is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt topper, which provides the classic, slow-moving sensation associated with memory foam. Additionally, our testers were impressed with this topper’s performance in a variety of categories, awarding it 5 stars for cooling, support, and materials.

Our tester back sleeping on the TEMPUR-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Topper

The TEMPUR-Adapt topper is made entirely from a proprietary TEMPUR-material, which feels just like memory foam but is more durable, according to Tempur-Pedic. When our tester lay down, they found it extremely soft, saying, “This topper hugs you in all the right places. It completely envelopes my body, and I feel like I’m resting on clouds.” Although soft, our tester still rated it 5 stars for support because their spine and body still felt properly aligned, especially in the side- and back-sleeping positions.

Additionally, this 5-star material was designed to be more breathable than traditional memory foam. The entire topper is encased in a cooling cover, which our testers found cool to the touch. This initial cooling sensation didn’t last all night, as our tester felt it rise back to room temperature after 20 minutes. She said, “After lying there for a while, I felt more temperature neutral. The topper didn’t feel hot and did a great job of not warming up from my body heat. She rated the topper 5 stars for cooling due to its ability to regulate her body temperature.

In our experience, an all-foam construction is best for reducing motion isolation, as the lack of coils allows it to completely absorb all the vibrations caused by tossing and turning. When our in-house tester lay on the TEMPUR-Adapt topper with her eyes closed, she couldn’t feel her testing partner climb into bed next to her. Even as her partner began to roll around, the motion was completely isolated to their side of the bed, so the topper earned 5 stars in this category.

Because memory foam offers deep, slow-moving sinkage around the pressure points, our testers didn’t find great responsiveness. If you’re a combination sleeper or have mobility issues, you may find yourself feeling “stuck” in the topper when trying to move between sleeping positions.

Typically, side sleepers find the best pressure relief from soft mattresses that allow for plenty of contouring around the hips and shoulders. These two joints hold the majority of the body’s weight when sleeping in this position, so it’s important to relieve tensions in those areas. Proper support is also important to help disperse the weight and keep the spine aligned. For side sleepers seeking a cooling mattress topper, I recommend the Viscosoft Active Cooling Copper topper. With exceptional 5-star cooling abilities, this soft memory foam topper helps cradle the body’s pressure-points while still providing enough support, which we rated 4.5 stars.

Looking at the thickness of a ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper.

As a copper-infused topper, the Viscosoft is especially great for hot sleepers. This material is known for helping dissipate heat, drawing it away from the sleeper rather than retaining it. Kate put the copper topper’s cooling claims to the test using a thermal gun, which measured the temperature of the mattress topper before and after she lay on it for 20 minutes. When we calculated the difference, the topper had only warmed up by 4.3 degrees, indicating excellent temperature-regulating abilities. Kate rated the cooling 5 stars and said, “It’s easily one of the coolest toppers I’ve ever been on.”

When our expert tester Kate Meier assessed the Viscosoft topper, she thought it completely transformed the feel of her mattress. With four inches of foam, the topper was able to relieve pressure across her entire body. As she lay on the topper, the memory foam adapted to the shape of her body, leaving a Kate-sized indent for several seconds once she stood up.

This doughy, slow-moving sensation will likely feel super comfortable for strict side sleepers. If you’re planning to lie in this position all night, you won’t have to worry about pressure building over time. While there’s a lot of sinkage, there’s still enough support to keep the hips in line with the shoulders and prevent the spine from bending, so Kate rated it 4.5 stars for support and said she thought it would work well for back and stomach sleepers, as well.

For side sleepers, responsiveness isn’t the most important element. While memory foam can create a quicksand effect, causing sleepers to feel trapped in the layer, you likely won’t be bothered by it unless you frequently switch between your side and another sleeping position. Since the topper earned 3 stars for responsiveness, you should be able to move between positions, albeit with some slight effort.

One thing to keep in mind — this topper arrives compressed and wrapped in plastic. When you unwrap it, the foams require time to fully expand. As they rise, you may notice a smell coming from the foams, which is normal as they release trapped air from the factory. The scent coming from this topper was a bit stronger than we normally encounter, so we recommend letting it air out in a ventilated room for a few days before adding it to your bed.

Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper – Best Cooling Latex Mattress Topper

Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper

Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper

The Birch topper uses natural materials like organic cotton and Talalay latex and is a GREENGUARD Gold certified product.

If you’re looking to add a bit of softness to your bed while maintaining solid support, latex foam may just be the perfect material for you. Not only does latex have a variety of natural properties, such as being antimicrobial and hypoallergenic, but it’s also super breathable and often provides great cooling. When it comes to latex toppers, my favorite is the Birch Plush Organic mattress topper. Not only did we rate the materials 5 stars for quality and durability, but this topper also earned 5 stars on our cooling test.

A close look at the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper
A close look at the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper.

The first thing our testers noted is that the natural latex foam inside the Birch topper is of exceptionally high quality, earning a Global Organic Latex Standard certification. This topper also earned several additional certifications for its materials, including Fair Trade organic cotton and a GREENGUARD Gold certification. These materials are free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals, and are also sustainability sourced, so we rated the topper 5 stars for materials and durability.

Since latex is a bit denser than ordinary foam, it does a great job balancing pressure relief and support. When our expert tester Kenny Timper evaluated the Birch topper, he thought it had a classic medium-firm feel, rating it a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. He said, “You don’t sink too far into this topper. You’ll get a fair mix of support and cushioning, and while it doesn’t offer a lot of contouring, it does feel soft around my lower back and joints.” He thinks this topper would pair well with an old mattress that needs a little more support.

Kenny also helped evaluate the Birch topper’s cooling abilities. When he first touched the organic cotton cover, he didn’t find it noticeably cool. Yet, it didn’t feel warm either. He used a thermal gun to measure the temperature of the topper before and after he had lain on it for 20 minutes. When he stood up, he said, “I can feel that it’s slightly warm where I was lying down, but nothing too crazy.” The thermal gun showed that the topper had warmed up by exactly 3 degrees, which is fantastic temperature control and earns the topper 5 stars.

My final highlight for the Birch Plush Organic mattress topper is its responsiveness, which Kenny rated 5 stars. Latex is a super springy material, which makes the topper very easy to move around on. If you switch between multiple sleeping positions, you’ll likely be able to do so easily on this topper.

Before you purchase this topper, keep in mind that its premium organic materials drive up its price. A queen-size Birch topper currently costs $532 at full retail, and it’s typically $399 during their frequent sales. For some shoppers, this topper may be a bit too expensive.

Other Cooling Mattress Toppers I Considered

When singling out the best cooling mattress toppers we tested, there were a few that I considered mentioning, but they just didn’t quite crack my top six. Below, I’ll leave you with two bonus options.

Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Topper

When it comes to cooling, graphite is typically a well-received material that helps prevent heat trapping. When our testers tried the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam topper, they were impressed by its overall feel, finding it supportive enough in the back- and side-sleeping positions. While our testers felt fairly cool on the topper, it heated up by 7 degrees after a tester had lain on it for 20 minutes. While this isn’t poor cooling by any means, it only earned this topper 4 stars in this category, which just wasn’t high enough to make my list.

Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 201 Mattress Topper

When a topper has a copper infusion, my expectations for its cooling immediately goes up. Not only is this material known for dissipating heat, it’s also antimicrobial. I personally tested this topper and thought it was softer than average, falling at a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Although it has cooling materials, I still thought its all-foam construction was a bit too warm to consider it truly cooling. This topper only earned 3.5 stars in this category, feeling more cozy than cooling, so I didn’t include it on this list.

How We Picked and Tested These Cooling Mattress Toppers

Every topper on this roundup has been tested by one of our expert testers, either in our studio or in their homes. Let’s quickly discuss some of the key categories we evaluate, how we score these toppers, and why these elements are important to pay attention to.

Temperature Regulation

When looking for a cooling mattress topper, it’s important to prioritize those made with breathable materials that promote airflow and combat heat trapping. Although many toppers are made from foam, which has a reputation for retaining heat, Dr. Dasgupta says some phase change materials (PCMs), such as cooling gel, copper, and graphite, can be infused in the foam to help draw heat away from the sleeper.

When evaluating cooling, our testers started by feeling the surface of the topper and evaluating its temperature. While some toppers’ covers have cooling technology that makes them feel cool to the touch, others feel relatively temperature neutral. Some toppers feel a bit more warm and cozy than sleek and cooling, so we typically don’t recommend these to hot sleepers.

Next, our tester rests on the topper for 20 minutes, observing the temperature of the topper under them and whether they can feel it heating up beneath them or contributing to overheating. Then, they feel the surface of the topper again and assess the temperature where their body had been.

Pressure Relief

A mattress topper is essentially a mini mattress on top of your mattress, so it’s important that it doesn’t cause pressure buildup throughout the night. If you have preexisting back pain or joint pain, this element is even more important.

When selecting the best cooling mattress toppers, I also paid attention to how our testers reported feeling in each sleeping position, and whether they experienced contouring and cushioning around their pressure points.

Our experts tested for pressure relief by lying on each topper in the side- and back-sleeping positions for five minutes. As they lay there, we asked them to note where on their body they felt cradled and comfortable, and where they felt pain occurring.

Support

Whether you want a soft or firm mattress topper, support is an important category to prioritize. If your topper isn’t providing enough support, your hips may sink below your shoulders, causing your spine to bend unnaturally. According to Dr. Dasgupta, proper spinal alignment is of the utmost importance to prevent pain from occurring over time.

Our testers first evaluated the firmness level of each topper, which they rated on a scale of 1 to 10. We consider 1 to be the softest and 10 to be the firmest, with a rating of 6.5 representing a true medium-firm feel. Then, they rated how much lift and spinal support they were experiencing using a 5-star rating scale, which you can view below.

  • 1 Star: The mattress topper causes your lower body to sink too far and throws your hips out of alignment with your shoulders, wrenching your spine.
  • 3 Stars: A fair amount of support is felt from the topper.
  • 5 Stars: The topper actually gives the mattress more support, aligning your spine and providing a comfortable, supportive sleep surface.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness can also be an important factor to consider when selecting a mattress topper. When we talk about responsiveness, we refer to how quickly the topper rises back to its original shape once pressure has been removed. Some materials, like memory foam, are less responsive and provide the slow, deep sinkage that some sleepers love. Others, such as latex, are more responsive and bouncy, and prevent the sleeper from getting stuck in the topper.

Squeezing the foam in a TEMPUR-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Topper
Squeezing the foam in a topper to assess responsiveness.

We score responsiveness using a 5-star scale, where 1 is the least responsive and 5 is the most responsive. Before choosing a mattress topper, you should consider how much responsiveness you’re looking for. We typically recommend combination sleepers prioritize responsiveness to aid the transition between sleeping positions. However, those who aren’t planning to move around much can get away with low responsiveness.

Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner, you may find yourself waking up when they get in and out of bed or move around. If you sleep lightly, you may benefit from a topper that’s able to absorb motion at the source and prevent it from traveling to your side of the bed.

The best material for motion isolation is typically memory foam, which helps muffle the movement. Hybrid and latex toppers are typically a bit bouncier, which allows the motion to travel.

Our expert testers perform a motion isolation test on the Wolf Mattress.
Our expert testers perform a motion isolation test.

When we test for motion isolation, we have one tester lie down wearing a blindfold while another tester gets in bed next to them and moves between sleeping positions. The blindfolded tester observes how much motion they can feel, if any.

What to Consider in a Cooling Mattress Topper

The above factors are important to consider, but there are a few more things you’ll also want to keep in mind throughout your buying process.

Materials and Durability

Long-lasting mattress toppers begin with high-quality, durable materials. When we evaluate materials, we look for any third-party certifications that verify the sustainability, safety, and quality of the product. You can read about certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, Global Organic Latex Standard, and more in our full guide to mattress and bedding certifications.

Additionally, our testers look for sleep trial periods, which some brands offer. These trial periods allocate a certain amount of days you can sleep on the topper before it becomes ineligible for a free return. We also take a peek at any provided warranty, which is around how long the manufacturer expects it to last.

Price

Instead of buying a brand new mattress, you can often achieve a better night’s sleep by simply adding a topper. However, mattress toppers come in a range of prices and levels of quality. To score the price of each topper, we used a 5-star rating system, which is outlined below.

  • To get a 1: The price is over $401 or more.
  • To get a 2: The price is between $251-400.
  • To get a 3: The price is between $101-250.
  • To get a 4: The price is between $51-$100.
  • To get a 5: The price is $50 or less.

Value

We rate a topper’s overall value by comparing its price to the quality of its materials and overall performance during testing. Like price, we rate value using a 5-star system, which you can see below.

  • To get a 1: The price of the topper is far too expensive for the quality of the product.
  • To get a 3: The price and quality of the topper seem about right; the product itself isn’t fantastic, but the price tag isn’t expensive.
  • To get a 5: The quality of the topper is exceptional and justifies its expense at every level.

FAQ

Who can benefit from a cooling mattress topper?

If you tend to sleep hot and experience frequent night sweats, a mattress topper with good temperature regulation can help prevent you from overheating. Additionally, a cool-to-the-touch cover can provide some initial relief for these sleepers.

What is the best material for cooling?

The best cooling materials are breathable, provide airflow, and help dissipate heat. Coil layers are typically great for cooling because they add room inside the topper for air to flow. Additionally, graphite, copper, and gel-infused foam has been known for helping draw heat away from the body. Gel-infused memory foam is the most common, as the other two are more premium materials.

What mattress topper is best for side sleepers?

Side sleepers might find that a softer mattress topper offers more pressure relief at the hips and shoulders when compared to a firmer topper. That said, it’s important to still find proper support in this position to promote spinal alignment.

How do I stop my mattress topper from moving?

Some toppers come with elastic staps at the corners, so make sure those are fully tucked under your mattress. If your topper doesn’t have straps, a tightly fitted sheet can keep it secure. Adding a non-stick mattress pad underneath or putting a mattress protector over the topper may also help prevent sliding.
