Cover: The Parachute Down mattress topper features a 100 percent cotton cover. The cotton is made with a sateen weave, which offers a smooth and silky feel.
Fill: The Parachute Down topper’s fill is divided into two chambers. The upper chamber is filled with European white down and the bottom chamber is filled with normal waterfowl feathers. Down is used in the top because the feathers are ultra-soft, fluffy, and spineless. The Parachute Down topper has a fill power of 550.
Fill power measures the amount of space one ounce of down occupies in cubic inches and a higher fill power indicates better quality and fluffiness.
When you place the topper on your bed, it’s important to ensure you have it properly oriented, since the down is in the top layer. If you have the topper upside down, you’ll be sleeping on the less-soft feathers.

This means it has a stitched grid across the topper that creates pockets of fill, separated by the stitching. Each pocket contains some fill, so it can’t bunch up on one side of the topper.
How Does the Parachute Down Mattress Topper Feel
I personally tested the Parachute Down mattress topper to get a sense of how it feels. Overall, I really enjoyed lying on this topper. It felt like lying on a soft, marshmallowy cloud. I could feel myself sinking into the three inches of soft down and feathers, but I still felt somewhat elevated and didn’t sink all the way through. All in all, it felt like a pretty luxurious sleep experience.
Now let’s go over what this topper feels like on different mattresses:
Soft: Normally I don’t think soft, cushioning mattress toppers are worth adding to an already-soft mattress, but I think the Parachute Down topper could work well on a soft mattress. It adds that down-featherbed feel to the top of the bed, but won’t make the bed feel overly doughy, like adding a soft memory foam mattress topper to a soft mattress might. Medium-firm: Adding the Parachute Down topper to a medium-firm mattress provides a cozy, fluffy, and soft top layer over the supportive bed below. I don’t think this topper provides enough pressure relief for side sleepers who need a lot of cushion padding around their shoulders and hips, but I think this will work well for those with a medium-firm bed who want a plusher feel while still feeling supported.
Firm: Like with the medium-firm bed, I don’t think adding the Parachute Down mattress topper will make a firm mattress offer significantly more pressure relief or contouring, but rather add a plush comfort layer over the supportive, firm bed below. I think this is a great option for sleepers who need a lot of support — such as heavy sleepers, who weigh 250 pounds or more — but don’t love the feel of a too-firm mattress surface.

My Verdict on the Parachute Down Mattress Topper
I found the Parachute Down mattress topper to be very comfortable — it adds a soft, plush, and cloud-like comfort layer to the top of your mattress without radically altering the firmness of the bed. It’s a bit like adding a pillow top layer, but more marshmallowy. I really enjoyed how I sank into the soft down of this topper — it felt so luxurious. It’s almost like sleeping on top of a thick, fluffy duvet. I think this topper could work well for both back sleepers and side sleepers, although I would caution side sleepers that it won’t offer quite as much pressure relief as body-contouring memory foam will on pressure points, like shoulders and hips. (See our best memory foam mattress toppers for options that cradle those pressure points.) I think this topper could work for some stomach sleepers, as long as they have a fairly firm bed underneath. Stomach sleepers need firm support to keep their hips from sinking into their bed, causing lower back pain.
The Parachute Down topper should be a decent option for hot sleepers, as the cotton shell, down fill, and feather fill are all very breathable, allowing for lots of airflow. However, they should keep in mind that down is very insulating, so this topper will keep you fairly warm.
One con I had for this topper is I wish it had straps or a skirt to attach it securely to the mattress. This topper simply rests on top of your bed — and while a fitted sheet should hold it in place, I think it will shift around easily since it isn’t secured. Additionally, this topper isn’t machine washable nor does it feature a washable cover. It must be dry cleaned, which can be a hassle.
