One of the most popular items new parents likely register for, or at least make sure they have in their nurseries by their baby’s arrival is a sound machine. But today’s sound machines are far beyond some unrealistic splashing wave or airplane sounds. The Hatch Rest, sold for around $60, is also a night light and “time to rise” sleep trainer, in addition to a sound machine. But parents with the 1st generation of the product need to take action after a recall warning of a shock risk due to a faulty adaptor.
Hatch recently announced that it had voluntarily recalled over 900,000 of its devices due to power adaptor concerns. (1) The products impacted by the recall include the Hatch Rest 1st Generation, which was sold and produced between 2019 and 2022. Stores that sold the devices include the Hatch website, Amazon, BuyBuyBaby, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Nordstrom and Pottery Barn Kids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that the plastic housing encircling the power adapter can come off when consumers unplug the device, leaving power prongs exposed and consumers at a risk for being shocked. Which Hatch Rest Model is Being Recalled & What to do?
Key models affected by the recall include model number CYAP05 050100U. These adapters have a white plastic housing and plug directly into the wall.
Consumers affected by the recall are asked to stop using the device and to email Hatch at recall@hatch.co for a replacement power adapter. Additionally, if consumers aren’t sure if their device is part of the recall, they can use the email to send a photo of their adapter to Hatch for confirmation.
Hatch shared on their website that they no longer use the manufacturer, Jiangsu Chenyang Electron Co., of the recalled power adapters and that none of their devices are impacted by the recall — just the power adapters.
Our Final Thoughts
In total, 19 reports have been filed about the AC adapter coming off, and two consumers have experienced electrical shock. Hatch isn’t the only one. Other sound machines have faced recalls in the past due to burn hazards and fire hazards. But this is a first for Hatch, which has consistently been rated as the top sound machines for babies. The brand is also expanding soon, as they recently announced that it would be launching a dog channel to help pets relax too.
Parents can also consider the latest research to determine if they really need a sound machine at all, as some experts think they are a little too comforting (and addicting) for babies and kids. But as any exhausted parents knows, in the middle of the night we do what we need to do to get a few minutes of rest for everyone.
