Is the Novosbed a Good Mattress for You?
Let’s hit the ground running with some of the basics about the Novosbed to help you decide if it’s a good mattress for you. Depending on your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position, the Novosbed may or may not work for you. While I can’t make that decision for you, take a look at some of my recommendations below to help you get there on your own.
Who I recommend the Novosbed mattress for
- If you like the hugging feeling of traditional memory foam, you have come to the right place! The Novosbed is going to provide that same cuddly feeling.
- Couples might be thrilled with the motion transfer results here (we’ll talk more about that later). This bed does a solid job of absorbing movements to allow you a peaceful night’s sleep!
- This mattress has multiple firmness levels to choose from, making it great for individuals with all different body types and preferences.
- Sleepers in need of pain and pressure relief should find lots to love with this memory foam mattress.
Who I don’t recommend the Novosbed mattress for
- While couples will love how much motion this mattress isolates, they are also going to need to take into consideration the lack of responsiveness it has — might make sex a bit more of a challenge!
- Heavier folks are not going to be supported enough by any of the three models the Novosbed offers. These sleepers should check out my best mattresses for heavy people.
- The edges of this bed may not feel as secure as the center of the bed. Couples, or solo sleepers who like to sleep near the edge, should really think about this and how it may limit the bed’s usable area.
How Firm is the Novosbed Mattress?
As with any feel factor, firmness is subjective, and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. So, my read of this bed’s firmness could differ from your own. For reference, I’m about 5’10”, 190 pounds. and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
Disclaimer: You can order the Novosbed in three different firmnesses: Soft, Medium, and Firm. I tested the Medium Novosbed, so if you feel that it might be too firm or too soft for your needs, you could always choose a different vibe!
For me, the Novosbed lands at a firmness rating of 6.5 out of 10, which syncs up perfectly with the industry standard for medium firmness. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the Novosbed to be this firm. Memory foam is typically a pretty soft material, so I was pleasantly surprised by how well supported I felt as I sank into the memory foam in this bed.

Firmness is one of the most important characteristics to consider when searching for a new mattress, but there are definitely more things to look at. To really determine whether a bed is a good match for you, it’s also important to consider how it performed in different sleeping positions, how it relieved pain and pressure, and how it might feel for couples sharing the bed. So let’s do just that!
Testing the Novosbed Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Different sleeping positions and weights require different amounts of support. Generally, light sleepers don’t require the same amount of support as heavy sleepers. Read on below to see how the Novosbed mattress performs for sleepers of different weights.
Is the Novosbed a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think this bed would be a great option for these folks. Light back sleepers tend to feel mattresses a bit firmer than advertised, so these sleepers should experience plenty of support and cradling at the hips.
- Light Side Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should find great pressure relief with the Novosbed mattress. The memory foam layers contour around their body to redistribute their body weight and work to relieve any pain! Overall, a great pick for these side sleepers!
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers may be alright on this mattress, but I would recommend taking a look at the Firm option! This firmer option allows for the same amount of cushioning, just with a little less sagging — the perfect recipe for stomach sleepers.
Is the Novosbed a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think average weight back sleepers would be okay on this mattress, but for more support I’d steer these sleepers to the Firm version of the Novosbed. The Medium version offers some hug, which certain average weight back sleepers may be looking for; I’d recommend taking advantage of the trial period offered to test this bed out for yourself!
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Average weight side sleepers can rest assured this is a great choice for them. These sleepers will enjoy the cradling they’ll get at just the right points.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Average weight stomach sleepers may find that their hips sink too much into this memory foam mattress, putting strain on their lower back. These sleepers might be better fit on one of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Is the Novosbed a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavy sleepers might want to look into a firmer option — like one of our best innerspring mattresses. Typically an all-foam mattress, especially one with memory foam, is not going to have enough support for heavier weights, and the Novosbed is no exception.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.

Novosbed Pain Relief Performance
A mattress with good pressure relief can help alleviate pain at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To get an idea of how well the Novosbed relieves pressure, I used my handy pressure map.
Putting the pressure map on top of the mattress and laying on top let me see where pressure was relieved and where it wasn’t. For reference, blue and green indicate areas of low pressure, while yellow and red indicate areas of high pressure.
Back Pain – The Novosbed mattress provided pretty good back pain relief! As I stretched out on my back, I could feel the top layers of gentle foam working to fill in the space in my lumbar region and provide relief to my hips and lower back. The same cannot be said for stomach sleepers with back pain. The Medium version of this memory foam mattress allows for sagging under the hips to the point where the spine is out of alignment, furthering back pain. I’d steer stomach sleepers to the Firm version.
Shoulder Pain – When I turned onto my side, I continued to feel some nice comfort from this mattress. The top layers of memory foam contoured around my shoulders and hips, cradling them as I pressed further into my mattress. It felt as though the bed kind of hugged my shoulder pain away! I highly recommend this mattress to anyone suffering from a shoulder injury or chronic pain. The same can be said for hip pain — the memory foam sank a tad under my hips in the same way as my shoulders, providing excellent relief.
Hip Pain – The only position that didn’t really work for me was on my stomach. As I rested in prone position, I could feel my hips sinking out of alignment with my shoulders, which is a big no-no for stomach sleepers. I’d steer stomach sleepers with hip pain towards a firmer structure that sets the spine in healthy alignment. On the flip side, back sleepers with hip pain should experience the same kind of relief as I had with my back ache!
Novosbed Performance for Couples
When sharing the bed with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few more things in mind while shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support.
Motion Transfer
Let’s take a look at motion transfer, which refers to the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. An important measure for all, but perhaps most so for folks who share their bed with a partner.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are solid motion transfer results, which tells me you shouldn’t be too disturbed by your bed mate’s movements at night. The memory foam is the star here as it works to actively absorb and dissipate motion across the structure. Couples — take note!

While the Novosbed has great motion transfer, it does not have much bounce or responsiveness. This is not uncommon for a mattress with multiple layers of memory foam, but does make this a poor bed for sex. That is not to say that activity in the bedroom would be impossible, it just may come with an extra challenge when trying to move around.
Cooling
The same hugging, memory foam feeling that you may love with the Novosbed may also make you a bit warmer. Although memory foam does have a reputation for trapping heat, I will say that the Novosbed has better temperature regulation than others on the market.
Edge Support
Since there is nothing but foam in the construction of this bed, there is no reinforcement around the perimeter of the mattress. I’d say this mattress has poor edge support. This is something for couples to keep in mind as they may feel that the mattress puts them right on top of their partner as they try to avoid rolling off the side of the bed.
What is the Novosbed Mattress Made Of?
The Novosbed combines thick top layers of plush memory foam with high-density poly foam to create a structure that’s as pressure-relieving as it is supportive. There are also some intriguing cooling properties at play here, which work to neutralize temps and chill out the memory foam structure.

Cover – The Novosbed cover is made from Tencel, an eco-friendly material that’s soft to the touch and super breathable.
Comfort Layer – Directly beneath the cover, you’ll land on a layer of Airflow foam. This material has a similar feel to memory foam in that it has a slow response to pressure and contours snuggly to the curves of the body. However, it’s been designed to circulate air better than traditional memory foam, which results in a much cooler sleeping experience. If you’ve avoided memory foam in the past because of its tendency to absorb and trap heat, you should be well pleased with the Airflow foam here.
Contour Layer – Up next, you’ll find another layer of memory foam. This section works to extend the contouring of the top layer even deeper into the mattress. I can already tell that this bed could be great for those who suffer from shoulder and back pain as the design actively works to alleviate tension at these sensitive spots. Pressure Relief Layer – To keep the comfort party going, Novosbed has snuck in yet another layer of memory foam. While you probably won’t be able to feel it too much while stretched out on the mattress, it does a lot of work behind the scenes to extend and support the contouring of the top layers.
Support Layer – And finally, we arrive at the base of the mattress, which is made of a thick layer of high-density poly foam. This layer provides the bed with its shape and stability, working to support the softer layers of memory foam above it.
Novosbed Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Novosbed is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive compressed and will have to be unboxed at home. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress.
As with many new mattresses, the Novosbed will likely emit a smell when it is first unboxed — this is known as off-gassing. Although this smell is not harmful, it does come with a synthetic foam, “new mattress” smell. If you experience off-gassing, I recommend leaving the mattress in a well-ventilated room and within a few hours the smell should be completely gone!
My Final Thoughts about the Novosbed Mattress

My favorite things about the Novosbed mattress
One of my favorite things about the Novosbed is that it’s a memory foam mattress that sleeps cool — cooler than most of its competition that is. Oftentimes, you’ll find that memory foam absorbs and traps body heat in an uncomfortable way, so it’s always nice to see a memory foam bed that mitigates this issue with effective cooling properties. As far as specific kinds of sleepers are concerned, I think I’d recommend this mattress most for side and back sleepers. And finally, I’d add that the Novosbed could be great for those who suffer from deep pain. The memory foam works to alleviate tension across the body, but specifically at the hips, shoulders, and lower back.
My Novosbed complaints
The Novosbed isn’t very bouncy, so it probably won’t be a good fit for folks who like to feel squarely on top of their mattress, or use it for sex. Additionally, I would say that the mattress isn’t quite firm enough to support the needs of heavier sleepers, many of whom will sink straight through the soft top layers of foam.
