GhostBed vs Purple: Similarities and Differences
Before we start digging into each individual mattress, I’d like to compare the GhostBed and Purple to help give you a better idea which bed might be right for you. Though the GhostBed and Purple have similar firmness levels, they’re made from unique materials that contribute to very different overall feels. Below, I’ll share what they do and don’t have in common, and let you know which sleepers I think each is best for.
Main Similarities
- The GhostBed and Purple have similar firmness levels and are both a bit firmer than medium-firm.
- Both mattresses are made with cooling features, and our some of the most cooling mattresses I have tested.
- They are both pretty bouncy mattresses and are quite responsive.
- Both mattresses come at similar price points.
- They are both bed-in-a-box mattresses and will ship to your door compressed in a box.
Main Differences
- The Purple’s comfort layer is made with a hyper-elastic polymer grid, while the GhostBed uses a latex foam and memory foam in its comfort layer. The Purple’s grid layer has a very unique feel that might not appeal to all sleepers.
- The Purple has better motion transfer results, meaning less movement can be detected from one side of the mattress on the other.
- The GhostBed has a 20-year warranty, while the Purple has a 10-year warranty.
GhostBed and Purple Mattress Feel Comparison
Now that we’ve discussed what these mattresses have in common and who each is best for, let’s get down to the nitty gritty and discuss their overall feel. I’m going to let you know their firmness level, pressure relieving abilities, and motion transfer results.
Purple
The Purple lands at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. Purple’s main goal with this mattress was to create a firmness level suitable for most sleepers.
Built with a 2″ top layer of hyper-elastic polymer, it’s safe to say the Purple embodies a feel unlike any other mattress I have tested. The polymer acts like latex in many respects, but seems to do everything a tad bit better. Bounce, cooling, pressure relief, and response are the main areas that the Purple’s polymer compares very closely to latex. That said, sinkage on the Purple is a bit more complex.
For sleepers around 150 pounds, there is a relatively minimal level of sinkage and hug. If you are a sleeper less than 130 pounds, there is more of a floating feeling. As we get past 150 pounds to the more average weight and heavier sleepers, there is most certainly a more noticeable level of sinkage, bringing the feel of this mattress closer to a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. For those lighter sleepers experiencing that floating feeling, the Purple is going to feel closer to a 7 out of 10.
Purple’s contour is less dramatic, it has more of a rounded and balanced hug / contour. The construction of this mattress gives it a high degree of point elasticity, allowing more body parts to sink in and receive the support / pressure relief they need without changing the overall feel of the mattress. Purple’s polymer is similar in some respects to latex foam, especially regarding the degree of contouring hug.
Last but not least, cooling. Overall, Purple’s cooling properties are hard to beat. Thus far, I would say Purple is one of the coolest mattresses I have tested to date. The hyper-elastic polymer smart grid design allows for high levels of airflow in and out of the mattress as well as top notch breathability from the foam layers below.
GhostBed
Similar to Purple, the GhostBed comes in at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the most firm). Once again, GhostBed wanted to create a mattress with intentions of meeting the needs of a vast majority of sleepers.
This mattress does a great job of creating a balanced level of comfort, support, and response time, thanks to the combination of latex and memory foam. Now, GhostBed’s method of using latex as their top layer tremendously improves response time as well as bounce. Typically, foam mattresses can struggle with regards to bounce or response time, but the GhostBed has taken this notion and put it to sleep.
The memory foam layers below the latex do a great job of contouring to your body once you have given the mattress a few minutes to adjust to your weight. These foams are slower to respond, meaning once they adapt to the shape of your body, you will continue to receive high levels of support and body-contour.
When it comes to support, the GhostBed is pretty solid, especially for an 11-inch mattress. This mattress did an excellent job of maintaining a high level of support. Ghostbed is capable of supporting up to 400 pounds per side. In addition, the GhostBed did a great job relieving pressure points my body tried to create with the mattress. Each sleeping position felt well supported and spine alignment was not an issue while sleeping on the GhostBed.
Finally, cooling. The combination of 1.5″ of aerated latex foam and 2″ of gel memory foam makes for solid levels of heat dissipation. Not once did I feel as if the GhostBed was holding my body heat during my sleep test.
Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Purple and the GhostBed
How a mattress feels to you will depend on factors like your preferred sleeping position and body weight. As a general rule of thumb, mattresses will feel firmer to lighter sleepers and softer to heavier sleepers. Additionally, side sleepers tend to prefer a softer bed, back sleepers like a medium-firm bed, and stomach sleepers do best on a firm mattress. Let’s see how the Purple and GhostBed compare for these different sleepers below.
Purple
Back — I think the Purple is a nice option for these sleepers. I felt nice and supported while lying on my back, and could feel the Purple grid contouring around my lower back to provide some nice pressure relief.
Side — Though this position was comfortable initially, I do feel that over time strict side sleepers will start to feel some soreness develop at the hips and shoulders on this mattress. I’d steer these sleepers to a softer mattress with more sinkage.
Stomach — Stomach sleeping was just okay on this mattress. I think light stomach sleepers would get the support they need here, but I’d recommend average and heavy weight stomach sleepers look for a bed with more support.
Body Weight — I think light and average weight sleepers will be happy on this mattress, but heavy sleepers (those over 250 lb) will not get the support they need here.
GhostBed
Back — The GhostBed is a great choice for back sleepers. These sleepers will get the right amount of support to keep their spine in a healthy straight alignment.
Side — I think this mattress is a touch too firm for these sleepers. I think they’ll be happier on a softer mattress that will allow for more sinkage at the hips and shoulders.
Stomach — Though I think lightweight stomach sleepers will get enough support here, I’d steer average and heavyweight stomach sleepers to a firmer mattress that will keep their hips from sinking out of line with their shoulders.
Body Weight — I think sleepers of all weights should be happy on the GhostBed, thanks to its sturdy construction and support level. Lightweight sleepers will likely feel this bed a bit firmer than advertised, while heavyweight sleepers will feel this bed a bit softer, as they’ll sink deeper into its comfort layer.

Now that we’ve talked about who these mattresses are best for and how they feel, let’s take a look inside them to see what makes these bad boys tick. The GhostBed is an all-foam mattress, while the Purple uses a hyper-elastic polymer grid.
Purple
The Purple mattress is built from a combination of foam and polymer and totals 9.5 inches in height.
- Cover – a SoftFlex material that’s made from a combination of polyester, viscose, and lycra. This combo is stretchy and breathable, so it moves with the Purple’s comfort layer and helps with airflow.
- Comfort Layer– 2 inches of hyper-elastic polymer. This top layer of hyper-elastic polymer is designed to provide the cooling, bounce, and pressure relief for the mattress. It’s also surrounded on the edges by polyfoam, which adds some extra edge support.

The GhostBed is an 11″ mattress built from a combination of latex and memory foam. Slightly different than most foam mattresses, the GhostBed adds an extra 0.5″ to their comfort layer, giving these layers a total height of 3.5″.
- Cover – Made of a polyester/viscose blend, this cover is soft and breathable.
- Comfort Layer– 1.5 inches of aerated latex foam. Similar to Purple, this top layer is designed to provide a high level of pressure relief as well as the cooling and bounce for the sleeper. Latex is also a long-lasting material, so this adds a bit of durability to the mattress.
- Support Layer– 2 inches of gel memory foam. As a less responsive layer, the gel memory foam has been placed below the top layer of latex in order to provide the sleeper with more support and pressure relief. Additionally, it provides deep compression support for sleepers.
