Best Twin XL Mattresses

We’re all pretty familiar with the size of a standard twin mattress. However, if you’re looking for a little extra length in your bed, then you might want to check out a twin XL mattress. These beds measure 80 inches in length, which adds five inches of extra leg room in comparison to a standard twin bed. Twin XL mattresses are great for kids, teens, single adults, guests, and taller sleepers. In search of the best twin XL mattresses, we tested a number of beds on the market using careful analysis.

However, our testing doesn’t stop at measuring size. If you’re going to be spending money on a new mattress, you’ll want to it work well for your body type, sleeping position, and whether or not you sleep with a partner. Here at Sleepopolis, we run our mattresses through a series of evaluations, including a 15-minute rest test, a pressure map test, and a motion transfer test, to name a few.

These tests make sure that the sleepers we recommend (or don’t recommend) for each of the 10 mattresses on this list are actually going to sleep comfortably. Whether you’re looking for extra cooling technology, pain alleviation, or that typical “sinking” memory foam feel, we’ve included a bed for you. Just make sure to check out the Pros and Cons section of each individual mattress’s review in order to see which sleepers these beds are best for.

Our Top Pick for Twin XL Mattresses

The Helix Midnight won our top spot on the best twin XL page because of its high scores in our testing and versatility. Helix has an extensive line of mattresses, and the Midnight falls right in the middle range for firmness, making it one of Helix’s most popular mattresses.

In addition to many of its other great qualities, lead reviewed and staff writer Nichole Mondshein noted the Helix Midnight’s excellent edge support, which allows you to comfortably sleep across the entire surface of the bed. That could be especially important for twin XL shoppers — this is a smaller mattress size, so every usable inch matters.

What We Look For In The Best Twin XL Mattress

Durability and Support

When shopping for a Twin XL mattress, you may be concerned about how well it will hold up, and how well it will support you with its small size. We know these are concerns of yours, so we made sure to test out the durability of each mattress in this list by examining the materials and construction to ensure a long-lasting mattress. We also used a pressure map to see what areas of support each mattress were best for to help you find the most supportive mattress for your unique sleeping needs.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is important in all mattresses, but especially important in such a small mattress, like a Twin XL. Motion isolation is the degree to which you can or cannot feel movement in a mattress. To test the motion isolation for all of the mattresses in this list, we dropped a ball from various heights and measured how much movement could be felt across the mattress using a seismograph machine. We also tested these mattresses’ motion isolation with a glass of red wine and tested how much movement was required to knock over the glass.

Price

When looking for a Twin XL, whether it be for a dorm, for your room, or something else, price is important to you. We know this so we made sure to consider the price of all of the mattresses on this list without compromising comfort, cooling, or support to help you find the best Twin XL mattress for your budget.

Expert Opinion

We named the Helix Midnight the best overall twin XL mattress because it’s an incredibly well-rounded bed and should be able to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. The construction features plush memory foam layered over pocketed coils in the base, which keeps the feel of this bed balanced between pressure relieving and supportive.

When we laid down on the Helix Midnight, we felt a slight lift from its bottom layer of coils, while also getting some soft body contouring from its foams, especially in sensitive areas like the hips and shoulders. Overall, the Helix Midnight scored a 6.5 on our firmness scale, making the industry standard for medium firm.

What our tester says: “The mattress is bouncy, making it easy for you to roll over or switch positions at night without worrying that you’ll get “stuck” in the bed.” — Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

What Customers Say

Many of the customers on the Helix website comment on how well this mattress cools them down during the night.

Pros of the Helix Midnight Mattress

  • The balance of comfort and support should give back sleepers the pressure relief they need around the lumbar region, helping them maintain a neutral spinal alignment.
  • The Helix Midnight is soft and contouring enough to give side sleepers the pressure relief they need at their shoulders and hips.
  • Like all of Helix’s hybrid mattresses, the Midnight includes a soft and breathable cover, plus the coils in this bed promote plenty of airflow. These are helpful additions for hot sleepers who want to stay cooler for longer during the night.

Cons of the Helix Midnight Mattress

  • The Helix Midnight probably isn’t firm or supportive enough for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. We recommend that these folks check out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people.

The Nectar delivers a balance of comfort and support: it’s definitely contouring, but still provides a firm enough foundation for most light to average weight sleepers, especially if they sleep on their back or stomach. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“I think back sleepers would be especially happy on this bed. They’ll get plenty of support from the firm memory foam in the Nectar Classic, which should translate to great pressure relief and a good night’s sleep. Hot sleepers who have to have a memory foam mattress should also have no trouble at all falling asleep on this bed.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

Memory foam is a prized material in the mattress world. It provides plush sinkage and contouring like no other. The Nectar is one of our favorite memory foam mattresses, and we think it makes for a fantastic twin XL bed. Plus, the Nectar Memory Foam mattress is also the Nectar brand’s most popular and affordable bed currently on the market.

When we laid down on the Nectar, we experienced some moderate pressure relief from its thick top layer of foam, as we could feel it conforming around the body and giving us a little bit of a hug. At the same time, a support layer of firmer foam lies beneath this original memory foam, which prevents sleepers from sinking too into this bed’s layers. Overall, the Nectar scored a 6.5 on our firmness scale, once again making this mattress the industry average for medium firm.

What our tester says: “After lying on Nectar for a while, my colleagues and I decided to give the Nectar a 6.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, putting it right at the industry standard of medium-firm. In other words, this bed is just a touch firmer than most all-foam beds. Most sleepers will still get a little contouring from the memory foam. However, you will likely feel more ‘on top’ of this mattress than ‘inside’ of the foam.” — Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

Users on the review section of the Nectar website praise this mattress for how well it alleviated their hip and lower back pain. The foams in this mattress do a good job of body contouring around these sensitive areas, and customers can tell.

Pros of the Nectar Mattress

  • Sleepers who suffer with back pain should feel some pain alleviation when sleeping on the Nectar. This mattress scored well on our pressure-map test, with the back region lighting up blue and green, equating to low pressure.
  • There’s enough support in the foams to help back sleepers maintain a neutral spinal alignment, all while cushioning their lumbar region.
  • Surprisingly, the Nectar felt supportive while we were stomach sleeping, which isn’t always the case with all-foam beds.

Cons of the Nectar Mattress

  • For a foam mattress, the Nectar isn’t the best at isolating motion. You can find some better motion-isolating options on our best mattresses for couples page.

With soft foam and a sturdy layer of innerspring coils, the DreamCloud strikes a balance between comfort and support — a little bit of contouring up top and on-top-of-the-bed feel that comes from the bottom. It’s a fairly firm mattress that we think is most comfortable for back sleepers. It also has some luxury touches such as a cashmere-blend cover that are reminiscent of a high-end hotel. Learn more in our DreamCloud video review.

What our tester says:

“I really like how luxurious this mattress feels and how it could work for a variety of sleepers. Along with that, I found that the breathable cashmere cover helps the DreamCloud sleep cool throughout the night. Thanks to its medium-firm to firm support, I think the DreamCloud is a durable mattress. It balances support with plenty of pressure relief for back sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor

Expert Opinion

Twin XL beds are great for kids and teens because they’re long enough to handle growth spurts. They’re also space-saving, so your child can devote more of their room to games, toys, or even a desk. The hybrid DreamCloud is fantastic for these sleepers because it’s one of the best options out there for lightweight folks. When we laid down on it, we felt some pressure relief from its contouring memory foam layer before the bottom layer of springs gave us a lift that helped keep the spine neutrally aligned. The result is a nice balance of comfort and support, with an overall firmer feel. The sturdy springs also keep the mattress durable, even through body changes.

As an added bonus, the DreamCloud’s coils promote airflow, plus there’s a gel infusion in the comfort layer that helps the bed stay cool. This helps hot sleepers wake up cooler and sleep comfortably for longer. This is great for growing teenagers and kids who are worn out from playing all day long.

What our tester says: “The DreamCloud is made with high-quality materials and has gel infusions, which help the bed sleep super-cool. Its wrapped coils encourage airflow because there’s so much space between the springs. I think there should be plenty of breathability.” — Nichole Mondshein, leader reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

On the DreamCloud website, there are currently over 4,500 customer reviews for their original hybrid mattress, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. 34 of these reviews are from parents who bought the bed for their children and testify to its comfort

Pros of the DreamCloud Mattress

  • The DreamCloud is a very supportive and firm mattress, which makes it a strong choice for lightweight stomach sleepers, such as teenagers. These sleepers need a firm mattress to keep their hips lifted in line with their shoulders, promoting a healthy spinal alignment.
  • Back sleepers of all weights should also get the support they need from the DreamCloud.
  • The DreamCloud comes outfitted with several luxury touches reminiscent of a high-end hotel, including a soft and cozy cashmere-blend cover.

Cons of the DreamCloud Mattress

  • The DreamCloud probably isn’t going to be soft enough for strict side sleepers. They usually need a softer mattress to contour around their hips and shoulders. For this, we recommend that these sleepers check out our roundup of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Expert Opinion

Stomach sleepers often struggle to find a mattress that keeps their spine properly aligned. Compared to other sleeping positions, they tend to need more firmness and support to keep their hips elevated throughout the night (the key to maintaining a neutral alignment). As an innerspring mattress, the Saatva is an excellent choice for this. When we tested it out on our stomach, we felt our hips being lifted and aligned with our shoulders.

The Saatva also comes in three different firmnesses: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. This allows sleepers to pick and choose the firmness level that works best for their needs and sleeping preferences. For stomach sleepers, we recommend the Firm model.

What our tester says: “The Saatva Classic is a bouncy, high-quality mattress with durability and great edge support. Thanks to the edge reinforcements, I felt just as supported on the side of the bed as I did in the center.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

Customers on the Saatva website actually comment more on the customer service they received at Saatva than the mattress itself. These users stated that the sales associates on the Saatva website made online mattress shopping easy and informative, without trying to upsell them a more expensive model.

Pros of the Saatva Mattress

  • The Saatva comes with free white-glove delivery, so it’s never compressed in a box. Because of this, customers are able to sleep on this mattress right away, without waiting for an unboxing or off-gassing period.
  • The Saatva is made of materials that keep it bouncy and responsive. This is helpful for combination sleepers who need to be able to easily switch positions during the night.
  • A large part of the Saatva’s construction is made up of coils — two layers, in fact. This leaves ample room for air to flow through the mattress and keep it cool, a plus for hot sleepers that want to wake up feeling fresh instead of sweaty.

Cons of the Saatva Mattress

  • As an innerspring mattress, the Saatva is pretty bouncy and responsive. While this makes this mattress great for sex, it does also mean that a lot of movement travels across its surface. If you’re easily disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning during the night, we recommend checking out our roundup of the best mattresses for couples.

Expert Opinion

Hybrid mattresses combine the cushioning of memory foam and the support of an innerspring bed by utilizing both materials in their construction. In the case of the WinkBed, the coils are extra-tall and supportive, and there’s an added pillow top for further pressure relief. When we tested out the WinkBed, we felt the coils a bit more than the foam, so there was more of a traditional innerspring feel than the “sinking” feel that’s common with memory foam mattresses.

If you opt for a twin XL size of the WinkBed, you can also choose from three different firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. For side sleepers, we would recommend going with the Softer model of this mattress, as it should provide more pressure relief around sensitives areas, like the shoulders and hips. However, back and stomach sleepers should be happy on the Luxury Firm or Firmer models, depending on their sleeping preferences.

What our tester says: “I think back sleepers and stomach sleepers should get the support they need from this luxury hybrid mattress. Also, combo sleepers rejoice! This bouncy bed should allow you to switch sleeping positions with ease, but it still offers some cushion at your pressure points.” — Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

Many reviews on the WinkBeds website commented on how well this mattress alleviates back pain. Some of these users even shared that they recently had back surgery, or had been dealing with back pain for up to nine years, and the WinkBed helped to relieve this pain after only a couple of weeks.

Pros of the WinkBed Mattress

  • Lightweight sleepers should rest comfortably in all sleeping positions on the WinkBed. The slightly firm feel of this mattress, combined with the softer Euro pillow top, makes it stable enough for lightweight back and stomach sleepers, while still providing enough pressure relief for lightweight side sleepers.
  • The WinkBed includes gel-infused memory foam and a Tencel cooling cover to keep sleepers from overheating, in addition to providing some nice cushioning. Plus, the coils in the base layer of this mattress leave lots of room for air to flow.
  • The coiled layer creates strong responsiveness and bounciness. This allows for combination sleepers to easily change positions throughout the night.

Cons of the WinkBed Mattress

  • If you’re looking for the level of contouring and sinkage that’s found in memory foam mattresses, you may want a different option with a more slow-moving feel. We recommend checking out our roundup of the best memory foam mattresses.

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

When picking the best online twin XL mattress, we kept a good sleep trial and warranty in mind. We think the Nolah Evolution fits the bill, as it comes with a 120-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty. And even though it’s a luxury mattress that’s more expensive than some of the other beds on this list, you can often find a twin XL Nolah Evolution mattress for around $1,000 after sales and discounts.

This mattress is also made of quality foams, starting off with a thick layer of AirFoam — the brand’s more breathable alternative to memory foam. The mattress gets firmer toward the bottom, ending with a layer of supportive coils. And, as an added bonus, all of the foams used in the Nolah Evolution mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, which means that they are completely free from pollutants and harmful chemicals.

What our tester says: “Because of this comfy sinkage, I’d recommend the Nolah Evolution as one of the best mattresses for side sleepers, who are likely to enjoy its pressure relief, which could help alleviate hip and shoulder pain. Back sleepers should also be comfortable on this bed.” — Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

While Nolah’s website doesn’t list exactly how many customer reviews there are for the Evolution, the bed has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars. “It’s very comfortable to sleep on, especially on your side,” wrote one verified buyer.

Pros of the Nolah Evolution Mattress

  • The Nolah Evolution comes in three different firmness levels, so there’s a model for every sleeping position. We recommend the Plush for side sleepers, Luxury Firm for back sleepers, and Firm for stomach sleepers. We personally tested the Luxury Firm.
  • This mattress sleeps especially cool, thanks to its breathable foams, airflow-promoting coils, and ArcticTex cover, which is made of organic cotton.
  • The foams of the Nolah Evolution help it absorb motion and keep it from rippling across the bed. This is good news for couples, especially if one person is a light sleeper who wakes up easily.

Even though it’s made entirely of foam, the Bear has a firm, supportive feel that should be sturdy enough for back sleepers and stomach sleepers alike. Additionally, combination sleepers should be able to easily move around on its surface. You can also pay extra for a Celliant cover that may help with cooling and muscle recovery. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I found the double poly foam construction produced a firm, supportive feel. Though you’re likely to sink into its top layer of memory foam, this sinkage is somewhat curbed by the taut poly foam transition layer. This means most folks are going to be positioned more “on top” of the structure than “in” it.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

Back sleepers in search of the best twin XL mattress require a combination of comfort and support. They may want to look at the Bear, which scored a 7 on our firmness scale, making it slightly firmer than the industry standard for a medium-firm bed.

When we laid down on the Bear mattress, we felt the memory foam layer contouring to our lumbar region for some nice pressure relief. However, at the same time, we also felt “on top” of this mattress due to the responsive transition layer and high-density support layer. These layers also make this bed a good choice for combination sleepers, as its responsiveness and bounce make it easy to change positions during the night.

What our tester says: “These folks should feel really comfortable on the Bear. Its top layer of memory foam gave me a touch of contouring while I was in the back-sleeping position, and the mattress’s on-top-of-the-bed feel helped keep my spine neutrally aligned.” — Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

Users on the Bear website appreciate how firm this mattress truly feels in person. This firmness allows their hips to stay in line with their shoulders, creating a healthy spinal alignment and alleviating pain in sensitive areas, like the lumbar region.

Pros of the Bear Mattress

  • For an all-foam mattress, the Bear sleeps extremely cool because of its gel-infused foam, which makes it a good choice for hot sleepers. The Bear brand also offers an additional cover made of a soft and breathable material called Celliant (though this will add $130 to your overall total).
  • Another bonus of this Celliant material is that it’s designed to absorb your body’s energy, then redirect it back to you for assisted recovery and blood flow. While we haven’t verified these claims, they could be hugely beneficial to sleepers who have just had a long workout.
  • The Bear received excellent motion isolation results on our motion transfer test. This means that the Bear should be helpful in muffling your partner’s movement so you don’t feel them ripple across the mattress, making this bed great for couples.

Cons of the Bear Mattress

  • As an all-foam bed, the Bear isn’t the most durable option on the market. If you have a larger body type, or weigh more than 250 pounds, you may want to look at a hardier option. For this, we recommend checking out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavier sleepers.

What our tester says:

“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night. I also think the Signature Hybrid could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice, firm edge support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

College students and young adults often look for products with the best price. If they’re shopping for a new mattress for an apartment or a dorm room, we recommend they look at the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, which we’ve chosen as our favorite cheap twin XL mattress. As the brand’s most popular model, it’s a quality bed with a simple, streamlined (and affordable) design of memory foam up top, transition foam in the middle. and individually encased coils at the bottom. The result is a blend of comfort and support that we think is an especially good fit for back sleepers. For context, the mattress is available in three different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm. We tested the Medium, and found it to be a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale — the industry standard for medium firm.

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid can usually be found at or around $600 after discounts. Many twin XL beds cost upwards of $600, so this model is an excellent value when compared to other mattresses on the market.

What our tester says: “This mattress has a bouncy, innerspring feel that left me feeling lifted and well-supported while also alleviating pain in my lower lumbar area. While I did experience increased pressure around my hips and shoulders when laying on my side, the Signature Hybrid remains an excellent option for back sleepers and anyone seeking a true medium-firm mattress.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

There are over 10,000 customer reviews for the Signature Hybrid on Brooklyn Bedding’s website, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. 750 of these reviews specifically mention the mattress’s affordable price, although some of them say it’s not worth it to pay extra for the optional pillow top.

Pros of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress

  • This mattress has a medium-firm support to it, which makes it helpful for back sleepers that are looking for a combination of pressure relief and stability. These sleepers should find that the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid keeps their hips elevated and in line with their spine.
  • For a hybrid mattress, this bed excels at isolating motion. If you sleep with a partner, neither of you should feel each other tossing and turning at night.
  • The springs of the Signature Hybrid give it some nice bounce and responsiveness, making it one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers who need to be able to easily change sleeping positions.

Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress

  • We didn’t think there was enough pressure relief here to give side sleepers the contouring they need at the shoulders and hips.

The Plank Firm more than lives up to its name with its ultra-sturdy foams and supportive feel. While this bed certainly isn’t for everyone, it should be an ideal fit for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers who want to feel more on top of their mattress than in it. What our tester says:

“I think the Plank Firm is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Expert Opinion

Heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds) might have a harder time finding twin XL mattresses that are comfortable and supportive enough for their weight level. However, the all-foam Plank Firm was designed to be extra-firm, so it’s unlikely to sag, despite how much weight you put on it.

We should also mention that the Plank Firm is another flippable mattress. There’s a Firm side that scored an 7.5 on our firmness scale, and an Extra-Firm side that scored a 8.5, making both sides of this mattress much firmer than the industry standard for a medium-firm bed. With this construction, heavy sleepers shouldn’t sink too far into the material of this bed. Plus, a super-thick layer of high-density base foam keeps these sleepers more “on top” of this mattress.

What our tester says: “I think the Plank Firm is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Both sides of the mattress, the firm side and extra firm side, should give these sleepers the support they need to keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Also, back sleepers who like a firmer feel should be happy on the firm side of the Plank.” — Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

Customers praise the Plank Firm for its resistance to sagging or sinking, especially around the edges. This is especially important for couples who want to spread out and use the full surface area of their mattress without fear of falling off the sides.

Pros of the Plank Firm Mattress

  • Lightweight sleepers should sleep well on the firm side of the Plank Firm, especially if they prefer to rest on their back or stomach. This mattress should provide enough support for these sleepers, while still adding some pressure relief around more sensitive areas.
  • Sleepers who suffer with back pain should appreciate the Plank Firm because its foam should fill the space around the lumbar region, alleviating pain in this area and keeping their spine in a neutral alignment.
  • The Plank Firm’s heavy duty foams make this bed bouncy and responsive. This is the ideal feel for combination sleepers who want to be able to move around during the night without worrying about “sinking” into their mattress’s layers.

Cons of the Plank Firm Mattress

  • This mattress might be too firm for side sleepers as it won’t hug your hips and create pressure points in your shoulders.
  • Sleepers who need customization might not like the Plank Firm because it is a fixed firmness compared to a few brands that offer different firmness options .

The Birch Natural is a latex mattress utilizing individually wrapped coils for added support. This mattress specializes in cooling and responsiveness, and the firmer nature suits back and stomach sleepers well. Perhaps the most special part about this mattress is the material quality. Not only is the Birch organic, but it has also earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“One of my favorite things about the Birch is how cooling it is. I think any hot sleeper will be satisfied by this breathable bed. It’s definitely one of the most cooling mattresses available thanks to its wool and latex layers. Expert Opinion

An organic twin XL mattress could be a good option for anyone wanting to make an environmentally friendly purchase. In the case of the Birch (created by Helix), you get a bed with eco-conscious certifications such as GREENGUARD Gold, Fair Trade, Eco Institut, and more (learn more about what these labels mean here). This is thanks to its construction being made of natural materials, from the organic cotton cover to a wool fire barrier and comfort layer of Talalay latex. At the bottom of the bed sits a layer of bouncy, supportive coils.

We found the Birch to be springy and responsive (traits commonly found in latex mattresses), with the sensation of feeling more on top of the bed than in it. It was very easy to move around and change sleeping positions. In terms of firmness, we gave it a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, placing it in the category of firm.

What our tester says: “I thought the Birch offered great bounce, which means combination sleepers should feel comfortable on this mattress.” — Madison Schaper, former staff writer

What Customers Say

There are more than 4,000 customer reviews of the Birch on the Helix website, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. Several customers recommend paying an extra for one of Helix’s plush comforters if they want to soften the feel of the bed.

Pros of the Birch Mattress

  • Combination sleepers should be comfortable on the Birch due to how easy it is to switch sleeping positions.
  • Another benefit of latex is that it sleeps naturally cool. The coils here also allow for air to flow through the bed, so the Birch could be an excellent choice for hot sleepers.
  • Back sleepers should get the lift they need to keep their spine neutrally aligned.

Cons of the Birch Mattress

  • Because of all the bounce, the Birch has very high motion transfer. This is something to keep in mind if you’re someone who shares a bed with a partner and either of you wake up easily.

Who Should Buy a Twin XL Mattress?

  • Parents: Because of its extra five inches in length, twin XL beds allow plenty of room for growth spurts. They’re also narrow enough for small bedrooms.
  • College Students: Twin XL beds are light enough to transport to a dorm room and budget-friendly. They’re long enough to accommodate taller students and narrow enough to make room for a desk or to leave more space in the dorm.
  • Tall Sleepers: Five extra inches provide leg room for taller sleepers, something standard twin and full size mattresses lack.
  • Single Adults: Twin XLs provide just enough room for single adults to sleep comfortably, even if those adults are on the taller side.
  • Budget Shoppers: Purchasing a twin XL costs significantly less money than a queen, and less than a full size mattress. You can find quality twin XL beds for well under $1,000. (Read: Best Mattress Under $1,000)
  • Those Needing a Guest Room Mattress: Twin XLs are a space-saving and wallet-saving option for guest rooms. They’re great for accommodating many different kinds of guests.
  • Those Needing an Adjustable Bed Mattress: Two twin XL mattresses can be used for a split king adjustable bed frame. That way, each person sleeping on the mattress can adjust the bed to their own preferences.

Who Shouldn’t Buy a Twin XL?

  • Couples: Unless two are purchased for an adjustable bed, twin XL mattresses aren’t big enough for couples. We recommend a queen mattress at the very least, or perhaps a king if you and your partner toss and turn. Read: Best Mattresses for Couples
  • Those Who Toss and Turn: If you’re a single sleeper who finds themselves moving all around the mattress at night, a twin XL may not provide enough room. A twin XL with great edge support could work alright, since you can use the entire surface area of the mattress. However, a full size bed or even a queen are safer choices.
  • Those Looking to Fill Up a Large Room: A narrower mattress like the twin XL may look awkward in a massive room.

Twin XL Mattress Considerations

Firmness

We’ve talked a lot in this review about how firm or soft these twin XL mattress are. But how, exactly, do we determine where these beds fall on our firmness scale? First, we have several of our Sleepopolis mattress testers rest on top of the mattress in question. We lie on our back, stomach, and sides, in addition to moving around so we can test the bed as a combination sleeper.Once all of our testers have tried out the mattress, each of us rates the mattress on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest, and 10 being the firmest. We then combine these scores to find one median firmness score for the mattress.

When testing mattresses, we test firmness on a firmness scale from 1-10.
Sleepopolis Firmness Scale
The Bear on the mattress firmness scale.

As you can see above, the Bear mattress (which is one of the mattresses on this list) scored a 7 on our firmness scale, which means that our testers must have all scored this mattress at around this score. Now, in general, the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is scored at a 6.5 on our firmness scale. So any score above this number means that the mattress will be slightly firmer, and any number below this means that the mattress will be slightly softer.

So, if you know that you enjoy a firmer or softer mattress, than make sure to look at our firmness scale before clicking “check out” on any of the mattresses on this list.

Sleeping Position

Sleepopolis prioritize testing each mattress in every sleeping position

Side sleeping: If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want to make sure you purchase a softer bed with sufficient pressure relief. Side sleepers put a lot of weight on the shoulders and hips. A pressure-relieving mattress will cradle these sensitive areas and prevent any soreness or tightness in the morning. We recommend they look for thick comfort layers or memory foam mattresses.

Back sleeping: Back sleepers require a balanced feel, so that their hips are cushioned but also lifted. Normally, medium-firm mattresses are excellent for these sleepers’ spinal alignment. We recommend hybrid, innerspring, or latex mattresses.

Stomach sleeping: Those sleeping on their stomachs should use a mattress with plenty of firm support. If the hips bow and sink too far into the material, this can throw off spinal alignment. We recommend innerspring mattresses.

Combination sleeping: Changing sleeping positions at night requires a mattress with a responsive surface. The bounciness allows for ease of movement. We recommend latex or innerspring mattresses.

Edge Support

A mattress with strong edge support will be supportive along its perimeter and won’t sag when sitting or laying on the edges. We test edge support by sitting and laying near the edge of the mattress and using a yardstick to measure how much the bed collapses under our weight. If the mattress has reinforced edges or strong coil layers, then it shouldn’t sink too much, and you’ll be able to sleep on the entire surface of the mattress without feeling unstable. This is a perk for couples, as strong edge support can make a mattress feel larger. Memory foam mattresses sometimes struggle to maintain strength along the edges, and this can indicate that the bed may sag over time.

Body Type

Lightweight sleepers (under 130 pounds): Being lighter in weight, these sleepers will generally perceive a mattress as firmer, since they won’t sink in as much. A mattress that isn’t firm enough for many stomach sleepers can work well for lightweight stomach sleepers, as they will rest on the surface. Conversely, a mattress that is soft enough for most side sleepers may still feel too firm to lightweight side sleepers.

Average-weight sleepers (130–250 pounds): Average-weight sleepers are the group most mattresses are generally designed for, so they will often experience the mattress as the manufacturer’s intended.

Heavyweight sleepers (over 250 pounds): A heavier body weight means these sleepers tend to need more support from their mattress than average or lightweight folks. We generally recommend sturdy beds with coils or another form of strong support to ensure these sleepers get the support they need. Heavy sleepers will generally sink into a bed more than others, so they may sink through comfort layers and “bottom out” on the firm support below.

What Do These Weight Categories Mean?

We use these three categories as a benchmark to help sleepers find a mattress that will best suit their needs. “Average-weight sleepers” are the weight category mattresses are generally designed to support, so folks who fall above and below that range (lightweight and heavyweight sleepers) should be aware they might have a different experience. This is especially important for heavyweight sleepers, as sleeping on a mattress that is not supportive enough can lead to pain and discomfort. Many companies now specifically design beds with heavyweight sleepers in mind, using sturdier materials and extra-reinforcement to adequately support these folks.

More Considerations

Price

Twin XL mattresses are definitely worth the price for those needing extra length compared to standard Twin sizes, such as college students or taller individuals. They typically cost between $300 and $1,200, depending on the materials and brand. Higher-end materials like natural latex and advanced memory foam tend to increase the price, often making them more expensive. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to improve your sleep, consider investing in a Twin XL mattress topper instead.

Responsiveness

A responsive mattress has a bouncy feel. This is often a quality of innerspring, latex, and some hybrid mattresses. Many enjoy a responsive feel because they like to feel as if they’re sleeping on top of the mattress rather than sinking into the layers. Responsive mattresses are great for combination sleepers who need to change positions at night, or anyone wanting ease of movement. Responsiveness is also very important for sexually active couples or individuals who are naturlly going to be moving around and changing positions- good responsiveness means less sinking.

Pressure Relief

Mattresses with lots of pressure relief are able to prevent the buildup of pressure around sensitive joints. Side sleepers require significant pressure relief because they put a lot of weight around their shoulders and hips. Those with arthritis or anyone with joint pain will want a pressure-relieving mattress, too.

For the best pressure relief, seek out a mattress with a thicker comfort layer. Memory foam mattresses, pillow-top beds, and some hybrid mattresses are great options. We test for pressure relief by using a pressure map to give us an accurate reading of where the pressure points of each mattress is. We roll the pressure reading mat onto the bed and have our testers rotate through each position to determine how pressure relieving the bed is. When reading the map, blue and green mean the bed will comfortably support you and yellow and red mean that long term, the mattress will not support you in the way you need it to.

When testing each mattress we use a pressure map to determine the pressure points.

Durability

Mattresses are already so expensive, it’s best to make the purchase worth your while. The most durable mattresses have strong foundations and quality materials. Beds with good edge support also tend to be more durable mattresses. A durable Twin XL mattress ensures long-term comfort by holding its shape through wear and tear, making it ideal for frequent use in compact spaces. Innerspring, hybrid’s and high-density memory foam mattresses are typically the most durable, often lasting between 8 to 10 years.

Cooling

Those who wake up hot and stuffy should invest in a cooling mattress. Most cooling beds tend to be innerspring or latex models. However, hybrid mattresses are generally cooling because they include breathable coils. Memory foam mattresses tend to trap heat, but cooling technology such as gel-infused or ventilated foam can change this.

An example of our cooling test
Thermal Gun Cooling Test from the Studio

We test for cooling by using a thermal gun to measure the temperature increase before and after our testers have rested on the mattress for 10 minutes. We consider an 8 degree change or under to be good cooling, and a change of 5 degrees and under to be great cooling. How fast the mattress dissipates heat gives us an accurate reading as to how the mattress will perform with hot sleepers.

Buying an Online Mattress

Company Policies

Sleep Trial

Sleep trials are a set amount of time a company allows customers to try out a mattress before it becomes ineligible for returns. We recommend looking for companies with sleep trials lasting at least 100 nights. That way, you have enough time to see if the bed suits your needs and preferences.

Warranty

Warranties are an agreement between the manufacturer and the customer that damaged and defective products will be replaces. We recommend looking for mattress with warranties for at least 10 years.

Shipping

Many online mattress retailers offer free shipping within the contiguous United States, although some do require a flat-rate shipping fee. If you purchase a “bed-in-a-box” mattress, it will arrive at your door compressed in a box. Once the mattress has decompressed, it may take 24 to 48 hours for any off-gassing smells to dissipate.

Some mattress companies offer white glove delivery. In this case, a team of workers will come to your home and set up the mattress for you in the room of your choosing. Some brands will even dispose of your old mattress for free.

FAQs

What is the average price of a twin XL mattress?

Most quality twin XL mattresses cost around $850. Keep in mind that a much cheaper mattress may not offer the same quality of materials or durability. A super expensive bed may not offer you many more features than a mattress a few hundred dollars less.

Can you put a twin XL mattress on a twin frame?

No, a twin XL mattress won’t fit on a twin frame. This is because a twin XL is five inches longer than a standard twin. So, it’s too long for a standard twin frame.

Do two twins make a king?

Two twin beds don’t make a king, since they’re five inches shorter. However, two twin XL beds put together do make a king. A twin XL measures 38 inches by 80 inches and a king measures 76 inches by 80 inches.

How We Chose These Mattresses

We’ve reviewed more than 300 products in our mattress lab, running each one through tests such as pressure-mapping and measuring motion transfer with a seismometer. From there, we give every bed an overall score based on materials, comfort, support, cooling, and edge support. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.

Since mattress size isn’t one of our categories, we looked at how much each of these beds costs for a twin XL, then weighed that against its overall score. In an effort to recommend the highest-quality mattresses, we chose products with a score of 3.9 out of 5 or higher. Click here to learn more about our methodology.
