Deciding between the Casper and Puffy mattresses is a tricky task. They’re both bed-in-a-box models from online mattress brands that provide a satisfying balance between pressure relief and support. They also happen to top a lot of “Best Of” lists, marking them as popular options for all different sorts of sleepers. But thankfully, figuring out which one is right for you is actually a lot simpler than you might think.
To help you get the clarity you deserve, I decided to create a Casper vs. Puffy comparison, which you can read in full below. We’ll go over the beds’ similarities, chat about their unique constructions, and round things out with my expert recommendations for who might like them most. If you want to learn more about each of these beds you can check out my Puffy mattress review and Casper mattress review.
So, without further ado, let’s get into my Casper vs. Puffy comparison. If you’re short on time you can skip down to my review summary.

Puffy vs Casper: Which is Better for You?
Depending on your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position, one of the mattresses is likely to work better for you than the other.
Who Should Buy Puffy

- Side sleepers will likely prefer the Puffy, which offers more sinkage than the Casper. This is great for side sleepers, who need to sink into their bed to keep their hips in line with their shoulders.
- Back sleepers who like a soft feel should like the Puffy.
- Memory foam lovers will prefer the Puffy, which offers a pleasant, hug-like feel.
Who Should Buy Casper

- Sleepers who suffer from shoulder pain or back pain might like the Casper, its zoned support system provides extra support at the back and extra pressure relief at the shoulders. It is the best mattress for shoulder pain.
- Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should go with the Casper.
- Hot sleepers might prefer the Casper, which is just a little more cooling than the Puffy.
Puffy vs Casper: Similarities and Differences
The Puffy and Casper are both all-foam mattresses that have similar firmness levels, but they’re not exactly the same. Below, I’m going to detail a few important similarities and differences between these beds so that we can better contextualize them throughout the comparison.
Main Similarities
- One of the most obvious similarities between the Casper and Puffy mattresses we’re looking at today is that they’re both built entirely of foam. It’s worth noting, though, that they use foam materials in very different ways (but more on that later!)
- I’d also say that both of these mattresses have a solid, medium-firm feel, which should endear them to a wide range of sleepers and sleeping styles.
- Both Puffy and Casper use proprietary foams in their comfort layers, which give the beds unique feels.
Main Differences
- The Casper has a zoned support system and is softer at the head and shoulders and firmer at the back and hips.
- The Casper sleeps a bit cooler than the Puffy. Its perforated Airscape Foam has a bit more airflow than the Puffy’s Cooling Cloud Foam.
- The Casper is a bit less expensive than the Puffy.
- The Puffy offers a bit more contouring and has more of a “in” than “on top” of the bed feel.

Puffy and Casper Mattress Feel Comparison
Now that we know the basics about each of these foam beds, it’s time to dive into the details. In this section, I’m going to do just that by focusing on feel factors like firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, and edge support.
It’s important to note, of course, that all feel factors are inherently subjective, and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Therefore, my reads of the Casper and Puffy mattresses may very well differ from your own. For reference, I’m 5’10”, 190 lbs., and prefer to sleep on my stomach.

Casper
The Casper mattress gets a 7 out of 10 on firmness scale from me. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems this bed is just a touch firmer than medium-firm.
I decided to give the bed a 7 out of 10 because of its balanced foam feel. Since the mattress employs so many different types of foam, no one material dominates the vibe — you get both lift and give, both pressure relief and support. For this reason, I think the Casper could be a great fit for a wide range of sleepers, but particularly those who struggle with back pain. This bed does a great job of setting the spine in an even line from the shoulders to the hips, so could work wonders for those with achy backs.

The Casper is also pretty good at isolating motion. This means that couples won’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner moving at night. I’d also like to mention that the Casper has pretty good edge support. This means that you won’t feel like you’re going to slide off the slide off the bed while lying on the edge. This helps make the mattress feel larger, since you can take advantage of its full surface area.
Puffy
As I mentioned up top, the Puffy is also medium-firm, but perhaps just a smidge softer than the Casper. For that reason, I give it a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
The Puffy is slightly softer than the Casper because of its top layer of memory foam, which produces some lovely body-contouring and sinkage. However, I think it’s worth acknowledging that the transitional layer of poly foam does a lot to curb this sinkage, which is why I scored the Puffy as medium-firm as opposed to soft. Back and side sleepers could benefit from this feel as it provides both ample pressure relief and support.

Like the Casper, the Puffy has pretty good motion isolation. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, since foam beds typically absorb quite a bit of motion. I’d recommend the Puffy to couples, since you’re unlikely to be disturbed by your partner, and the bed’s medium-firm feel should appeal to a wide range of sleepers.
Finally, I’d like to mention edge support. Unfortunately, the Puffy doesn’t have the best edge support, and I did feel like I was going to roll off the side of the bed while lying there. If you’re a larger sleeper or are worried about bed space, this could pose a problem.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Puffy and the Casper
To give you an even better idea of what it’s like to sleep on these beds, I’m going to go over what they felt like in each of the main sleeping positions below.
Casper
Back — The Casper felt really comfortable on my back! I felt lifted up and out of the bed, and got a great amount of support around my lower back especially.
Side — The Casper did feel a little firm to me when I was on my side. Side sleepers who change positions at night should do fine on this bed, but strict side sleepers might prefer the softer Puffy.
Stomach — The Casper felt too soft when I was on my stomach. Personally, I don’t think either of these beds is a good option for stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to keep their hips from sinking into the bed. I’d steer them to our best mattress for stomach sleepers roundup.
Body Weight — I don’t think the Casper is supportive enough for sleepers over about 250 lbs. I’d recommend they search for a thicker mattress with innerspring support. Our best mattress for heavy people roundup could have some good options for anyone on the heavier side.
Puffy
Back — Like the Casper, the Puffy felt comfortable when I was on my back. But, it had a much softer feel than the Casper did.
Side — I thought the Puffy felt great when I was on my side. I could feel myself sinking into the bed for some pressure relief around my shoulders and hips.
Stomach — Like the Casper, the Puffy is too soft for stomach sleepers. I’d steer these folks away from this bed.
Body Weight — Lighter people might actually find this mattress softer than I did, because they won’t sink through the top memory foam layer onto the firmer foams below. If you like a soft feel, this could be great for you. On the other hand, like the Casper, the Puffy is not supportive enough for heavy people.
Comparing Casper and Puffy Prices
Of course, before purchasing a new mattress you’ll want to look at the price. Though the Casper is a bit cheaper than the Puffy, they come at pretty similar price points. Be sure to check out our Casper mattress coupon page a for a nice discount.

Comparing Puffy and Casper Mattress Materials
Now that we’ve got the feels sorted, it’s time to dive underneath the covers and see what these beds are made of! I’ll go over each bed’s unique construction below.
Casper
Cover – Made from a knit polyester blend, the Casper’s mattress cover is soft and cozy to the touch.
Comfort Layer – The comfort layer is made of the brand’s special Airscape™ foam, which is gentle, bouncy, and cooling. It’s also quite breathable, thanks to the open-cell design along its surface. This layer is intended to lift the sleeper up, thereby positioning them more “on top” of the bed than “in” it.
Contour Layer – Next up, you’ll land on a layer of memory foam that’s been zoned for support. Traditional memory foam has a slow response to pressure, allowing the sleeper to sink in for deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. Casper’s memory foam has that same feel, but has been modified slightly with the zoned design, so it’s softer at the shoulders for a little give and firmer at the hips for a little lift.
Base Layer – And finally the base, comprised here of high-density poly foam. This section gives the bed its stability and shape.

Puffy
Cover – Like Casper’s cover, the Puffy’s cover is made of a polyester blend that’s soft and cozy to the touch. It’s also stain-resistant and easily removable for washing.
Comfort Layer – The Puffy mattress kicks things off with the brand’s Cooling Cloud™ foam, which has a very similar feel to memory foam. This means it’s got a slow response to pressure that encourages deep body-contouring and sinkage. Where the comfort layer in the Casper is designed to position the sleeper more “on top” of the bed, the memory foam here is meant to hug the sleeper. Puffy has also added a cooling gel infusion to combat memory foam’s heat-trapping tendencies.
Transition Layer – Beneath the memory foam layer, you’ll spy a transitional section of poly foam. This material has a quicker response to pressure than the memory foam above it, working to ease the sleeper into the firmer base below.
Base Layer – As in the Casper, the base layer of the Puffy mattress is made up of high-density poly foam, which brings some nice stability to the overall structure.

Casper vs Puffy: Best Qualities
Well y’all, we’ve almost made it to the end of this comparison! After digging into these beds’ constructions and comparing their feels, it’s time to wrap things up with a few final observations and recommendations.
First and foremost, if you’re a sleeper in need of major support at the lower back, I’d suggest going with the Casper mattress. Not only does this bed have a pleasantly balanced feel, but it’s also got an internal layer of zoned support to help set the spine in a neutral line all the way from the shoulders to the hips. This could be satisfying for all sorts of sleepers, but especially those who struggle with back pain at night. The Casper is also bouncier than the Puffy, so could be a nice fit for combination sleepers.
When it comes to the Puffy mattress, I think it’s probably best-suited for side sleepers or those who deal with joint pain. Though both the Casper and Puffy feature memory foam in their constructions, I would only really describe the Puffy as a memory foam mattress, meaning it’s plush, pressure-relieving, and designed to leave you feeling more “in” the bed than “on top” of it. If you’re looking for a cuddly hug from your mattress while you sleep, the Puffy could very well be the bed for you!
To get even more specific about my recommendations, I’m going to wrap things up with some of my favorite aspects of each mattress.
Casper Best Qualities
- I think the Casper mattress could be a great fit for those who struggle with back pain. Not only does it have a cozy, balanced feel, but its interior layer of zoned support helps to lift and set the spine in a healthy, neutral alignment.
- The balanced foam feel of the mattress should also endear it to a wide range of sleepers. So, if you’re someone who hasn’t exactly figured out how you sleep, you’ll likely enjoy the Casper.

Comparing Puffy and Casper Customer Service
Here at Sleepopolis we like to test every brand’s customer service ourselves. This helps us give you a better idea of what it might be like to buy a mattress or product from them. They can receive one of four scores: Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, or Poor.
Puffy Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Great: I used the chat function on Puffy’s site and my question was answered kindly after a few minutes. However I did disagree with the answer the agent gave me. They said the Puffy Royal is their softest mattress, but in my testing I found the Puffy Lux to be the softest.
Casper Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Great: I also used the chat function on Casper’s site. My question was answered quickly, but I was sent a link rather than given an answer. If they did answer my question directly, I would have given them a Stellar rating.
Comparing Other Models from Puffy and Casper
Now that we’ve gone over the specifics of the original Casper and Puffy mattresses, it’s time to turn our attention to a few of the other models these brands sell. Below, I’ll give you a brief overview of these mattresses to contextualize my Casper vs Puffy comparison!
Casper Hybrids
In addition to the all-foam Casper we’ve been exploring in this comparison, the brand also sells a variety of different hybrid mattress models. The best hybrid mattresses are ones that combines foam layers with either coils or springs, to give a bouncier, firmer, and more supportive feel than beds made entirely of foam. The three beds we’ll dissect here are the Casper Hybrid, Casper Nova Hybrid, and Casper Wave Hybrid.
- Casper Hybrid: The Casper Hybrid is exactly like the all-foam Casper, except it has a base layer of pocketed coils instead of high-density poly foam. This makes for a bouncier structure that could work well for combo and back sleepers.

- Casper Nova Hybrid: I’d say the Casper Nova Hybrid is probably the softest bed in the Casper line. It also happens to sleep a bit cooler than the other models, so could be a fantastic option for hot sleepers.

- Casper Wave Hybrid: Casper calls the Casper Wave Hybrid its most luxurious bed, and I agree! It’s got multiple layers of zoned support as well as plush foams for body-contouring and pressure relief. I think this bed could be well-suited to a wide range of sleepers, but particularly heavier folks or those after a true luxury vibe.

Puffy Lux
- The Puffy Lux is a super soft option for folks who want an ultra-cuddly sleeping experience.
- While many people may enjoy the deep contouring of this mattress, I think it would probably be best-suited for side sleepers or anyone else who struggles with aches and pains in the night.
- The Lux is also quite breathable, so could be a great cooling option for those who overheat while they sleep.

Puffy Royal
- The Puffy Royal is a luxury mattress that features a dynamic, five-layer construction of memory foam, poly foam, and high-density poly foam.
- As opposed to the Original Puffy and the Lux, the Royal has more of a medium-firm feel, so could endear itself to back and side sleepers.
- If you like the idea of an all-foam mattress, but don’t want to feel stuck in the bed, this could be a solid option for you.

Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
