GoodMorning.com is a mattress and bedding company that offers a wide variety of products to Canadian sleepers, and the brand’s specifically targeting hot sleepers with its new Douglas Alpine mattress. The company says it’s similar to the original Douglas mattress (which we found a lot to love in), but it has added cooling features, pressure relief, and support.
So is this all-foam mattress the right one for you? First things first, it’s only available in Canada — so that may weed some shoppers out. But if proximity isn’t a problem, then stick around! I’m going to put the Douglas Alpine through a variety of tests, like checking its firmness, pressure relief, motion isolation, and more, to let you know if it’s the best choice for you.

Is the Douglas Alpine a Good Mattress for You?
To start off, we put each of our mattresses through something called a “Rest Test,” where we lie down on the bed for an uninterrupted 15-minute power nap. This gives us a big-picture assessment of how it performs before we get into some of our more specific tests. Here’s how my colleague Amelia felt napping on the Douglas Alpine mattress:
“I found the Douglas Alpine to be quite comfortable! As I laid on the bed, I felt a nice mix of pressure relief and support. I felt the foam allowed me to sink in a bit, but not too deeply that I felt all the way ‘in’ the mattress. I tried this bed in multiple sleeping positions, including back, side, and stomach and I actually felt pretty comfortable in all three. However, I do think if I spent the whole night on my stomach, my hips would likely sink in and cause my back to bow. But as a primarily back/side sleeper, this is definitely a bed I would be happy to sleep on.”
Along with the Rest Test, I want to offer some quick recommendations for the Douglas Alpine before we fully dive into this review since different factors, such as your body type and sleeping position, will determine whether or not a mattress will work for you.
Who I recommend the Douglas Alpine mattress for
- I think hot sleepers could enjoy the cooling components in this mattress. From its slick cooling cover to its gel-infused foam, this bed works to combat heat from trapping.
- Back sleepers should find a stellar mix of pressure relief and support with the Douglas Alpine.
- Combination sleepers should be able to move around with ease on this mattress. I think back-side combination sleepers would do best on it.
Who I don’t recommend the Douglas Alpine mattress for
- If you’re not in Canada, this bed isn’t available to you — but don’t worry, we have plenty of other great options in our roundup of the best mattresses of 2024.
- I think stomach sleepers weighing more than 59 kilograms (130 pounds) will want a firmer mattress to offer better support for their sleeping position in order to maintain spinal alignment. Check out our roundup of best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
- I’d steer heavier sleepers weighing more than 113 kilograms (250 pounds) toward a more supportive bed, like an innerspring mattress or one specifically designed with heavy sleepers in mind. Head over to our best mattresses for heavy people roundup for options that meet this criteria.
How Firm is the Douglas Alpine mattress?
Mattress firmness can be a huge indicator of whether or not the bed is going to be a good fit for you and your sleep preferences. Mattress firmness can be subjective though, so I like to include my coworkers’ opinions in my final firmness rating.
After comparing notes with my colleagues, I decided to rate the Douglas Alpine as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. We rate 6.5 as the standard for medium-firm, so this means the Douglas Alpine is a little softer than average. I found when sitting on this bed, it feels squishy and doughy, but when you lie down on it, you feel more supported and evenly cushioned — like you’re getting a nice, Canadian hug.

Douglas Alpine Mattress Performance
Let’s dive into some performance factors, including support in different sleeping positions, pain relief, and performance for couples.
Testing the Douglas Alpine Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Take a look at how the Douglas Alpine does for different weight classes in different sleeping positions below.
Is the Douglas Alpine a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 59 kilograms / 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think this bed will feel medium-firm to these sleepers, which is typically the gold standard for back sleepers. They should feel some nice cushioning along with solid support.
- Light Side Sleepers – These sleepers could feel comfy on this bed since it does have a softer top layer, but I’d recommend they go for a soft mattress if side sleeping is their main sleep position.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – The Douglas Alpine should feel firm enough for these sleepers and keep them lifted up to ensure healthy sleep posture.
Is the Douglas Alpine a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (59 – 113 kilograms / 130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers should feel great on the Douglas Alpine. The cushy foams should offer them pressure relief while the denser foams on bottom should keep them supported.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Douglas Alpine should work well for these sleepers. The conforming foam layers should offer nice pressure relief around their shoulder and hip.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers go for a firmer bed in order to have their hips propped up and in line with their spine. This will help prevent lower back pain. You can find some good firm picks in our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Is the Douglas Alpine a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 113 kilograms / 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back, Side, and Stomach Sleepers – The Douglas Alpine is likely not going to be supportive enough for these sleepers and their needs. Check out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people to see more supportive mattresses and ones specifically designed for heavier body weights.
Douglas Alpine Pain Relief Performance
A bed with strong pressure-relieving abilities can make a world of difference for anyone who suffers from pain. It will help alleviate tension at pressure points found at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Depending on your preferred sleeping position, you’ll also want pressure relief for different parts of your body in order to prevent pain.
I tested the Douglas Alpine’s pressure relief by using a pressure map. This device uses heat mapping technology to show where pressure’s building across the body while lying on a mattress. The device tracks the force I’m exerting on the bed as I move around and produces a colored “map” of results. Blue and green indicate areas of low pressure, while orange and red indicate areas of high pressure.
Back Pain – These are great results for both back and side sleepers with back pain. The map recorded all low pressure for both sleeping positions. However, I think stomach sleepers with back pain will want to opt for a firmer mattress, so their hips don’t dip down and put their spine out of alignment.
Shoulder Pain – Results are showing very little to no shoulder pain for both side sleepers and back sleepers on the Douglas Alpine. I think the soft top foams in the bed are doing their job! Although I think stomach sleepers would find relief around their shoulders on this bed, I’d still recommend they go for a firmer bed to maintain spinal alignment.
Hip Pain – These are nice results for back sleepers and side sleepers with hip pain. The Douglas Alpine provides a good bit of sinkage to prevent pressure from building up. Again, I think stomach sleepers with hip pain should look for a firm mattress instead since their hips will benefit from stronger support.
Douglas Alpine Mattress Performance for Couples
If you share the bed with a partner, you’ll want to consider a few extra components than those who sleep alone, including motion transfer, sex, edge, support, and cooling.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is how movements travel from one side of the bed to the other. Couples typically want a mattress with low motion transfer and strong motion isolation. That way, you’re not disturbed on your side of the bed by every move they make throughout the night.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball on the Douglas Alpine from heights of four inches, eight inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are pretty average motion transfer results. I don’t think you’d feel your partner’s small movements, like tossing and turning, but you’d likely feel them getting in and out of bed.
Sex
The best mattress for sex will be responsive and easy to move around on. I actually found the all-foam Douglas Alpine to have some nice bounce to it, which isn’t always the case for all-foam beds. Overall, I think it’d be a good mattress for sex.
Cooling
Two people are going to overheat faster than a solo sleeper, so we also recommend couples take cooling into consideration. As I mentioned earlier, the Douglas Alpine was built to be cool! It has a moisture-wicking cover, cooling gel, and temperature-balancing technology to prevent body heat from trapping. I’d say it sleeps cool for an all-foam bed.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of how well the perimeter of a mattress supports weight, so you can sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. Strong edge support can make a bed feel larger since you’re able to sprawl out and use the full surface.
I tested the Douglas Alpine’s edge support by sitting, lying, and moving around on the side of the bed. While sitting on the edge, it sank down a good amount. While lying on the side, it did a lot better and kept me more supported. I think it has decent edge support (especially for being an all-foam mattress).
What is the Douglas Alpine Mattress Made Of?
The Douglas Alpine is an 11-inch mattress with cooling materials. Its main layers are all made of foam, but each one serves a different purpose. Let’s go over them more below.
Cover – The Douglas Alpine’s top layer is a Douglas CoolSense Cover, which contains sustainable Infinitex fibers to wick away moisture and Tencel. The cover has a slick feel. It’s also removable and washable.
Comfort Layer – The comfort layer is two and a quarter inches of Douglas’ trademarked ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam with Polar Temperature Balancing. The cooling gel foam helps dissipate body heat, while the Polar Temperature Balancing works to keep sleepers cooler in the summer and warmer during colder months.
Transition Layer – Next up are two and a quarter inches of Premium Elastex Foam. Douglas says this layer provides both bounce and cushioning.
Support Layer – The support layer is six and a half inches of Douglas’ Motion Isolation Support Foam. This is high-density foam that keeps the bed stable and offers overall support to the structure.
Douglas Alpine Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Douglas Alpine is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive at your door compressed in a box. You’ll need to unbox it at home, and we recommend having another person help you.
Like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress. It will need to off-gas for a few hours to release any packing smells, but after that, any smell should go away.

My Final Thoughts About the Douglas Alpine Mattress
To wrap this Douglas Alpine mattress review up, I want to leave you with my favorite things about this mattress, along with some drawbacks.
My favorite things about the Douglas Alpine mattress
I really appreciate how this all-foam bed has cooling features built in — it’s a major perk for hot sleepers who don’t want to sacrifice pressure relief with their mattress. I think the Douglas Alpine specifically works great for back, side, and combination sleepers. It’s also a budget-friendly option for anyone looking to find a quality bed at a lower price point.
My complaints about the Douglas Alpine mattress
I wouldn’t recommend this bed to a lot of stomach sleepers or heavyweight sleepers since I don’t think it will offer them the support they need. I also think anyone after a traditional mattress feel may want to look for an innerspring or hybrid mattress instead. And although it’s to be expected from a Canadian company, it is a bummer that those who live outside of Canada can’t order this bed! We think the Nectar mattress is a comparable option for those in the U.S.
