The Nolah mattress topper is available in two different firmness levels: Plush and Luxury Firm, making it a versatile topper for a variety of sleepers. Both versions are made with Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam, which they say is more cooling, durable, and pressure-relieving than traditional memory foams. The topper also features an organic cotton cover, which should further promote breathability.

One favorite feature for the Nolah topper is it has elastic straps on each corner. These straps secure the topper to your mattress, so you don’t have to worry about it shifting. Plus, if you value buying American-made products, you will be happy to know this topper is made in the U.S.

Many couples share a queen size mattress (the most popular mattress size in the U.S.!), so we had to include a great option for couples in this roundup. Saatva offers a few different mattress toppers, but we love this Graphite one because it is comfortable, sleeps temperature-neutral, and stays secured with elastic straps.

The topper consists of three inches of graphite-infused memory foam and an organic cotton cover. The foam in this topper feels thick and high-density, offering lots of room to sink in for body contouring and pressure relief, while still getting lots of support. The thick foam also prevents motion from transferring from one partner to the other by isolating it at the source.

Latex foam is a great option for folks who prefer a bouncier, cooler, and more natural topper than memory foam usually provides. Even though some gel, graphite, or copper infusions can help memory foam sleep cooler, it still naturally traps a lot of heat. Not the case with latex! That makes the Birch Plush Organic mattress topper, which is made with Talalay latex foam, a great pick for hot sleepers. The topper also features a layer of organic wool for plushness and functioning as a fire barrier, plus a cover made from organic cotton.

The Birch Plush Organic topper has a very supportive feel. You will likely feel like you are “on top” of the bed, rather than sinking in. It’s also quite responsive and bouncy, making it easy to move around on. That’s a positive for combination sleepers, who change between sleeping positions.

How To Choose A Queen Size Mattress Topper

With so many options available on the market, how do you know which mattress topper is best for you? Here are a few guidelines we recommend considering as you shop for your new queen size mattress topper.

Sleeping Position

When shopping for a mattress topper, we always recommend first taking into consideration your primary sleeping position: back, side, stomach, or combination. Each sleeping position has different sleep needs and will be most comfortable on a different mattress topper.

  • Side sleepers need more pressure relief around their shoulders and hips, since their body weight rests on these joints. Soft, conforming, and pressure-relieving toppers generally suit them best.
  • Back sleepers can generally be comfortable on any mattress topper, as it is the best sleeping position for your spinal alignment. However, back sleepers may want additional pressure relief around the shoulder or might want some support around the lumbar region.
  • Stomach sleepers need a firm and supportive sleep surface to keep their hips from sinking too deeply into their bed. Sunken hips cause the back to bow, which puts the spine out of alignment. Most toppers will be too soft for stomach sleepers for this reason. However, firmer toppers or very thin toppers can work well for stomach sleepers.
  • Combination sleepers need a topper that works well for multiple positions, as well as one that is easy to move around on.

Materials

There are a variety of different materials used to make mattress toppers. Each offers a different feel, as well as some pros and cons. In addition to the primary fill material, it’s important to consider materials used in the cover and any additional layers of the topper. These materials can contribute to the overall feel, breathability, and quality of the topper.

Memory Foam

P1024773

The majority of mattress toppers are made with memory foam or other polyurethane foams. Memory foam is popular because it offers a lot of body contouring and pressure relief — a quick fix for a too-firm mattress. Memory foam mattress toppers come in a variety of thicknesses and the thicker the topper, the more room you will have to sink in for pressure relief. There are also different densities of foam. Denser foams will generally be more supportive.

Memory foam conforms around your body by absorbing your body heat, so it naturally traps and retains heat. Some manufacturers try to counteract this tendency by adding gel, copper, or graphite infusions to draw heat away from the body. However, it is important to note that most of these infusions don’t make the foam feel “cool to the touch,” but rather provide a temperature-neutral sleep experience.

Latex Foam

P1020612

Latex foam is another popular material used in mattress toppers. Latex foam is derived from the sap of rubber trees, so it is commonly used as a natural foam alternative to memory foam. Latex is more buoyant, responsive, and cooling than memory foam. It maintains a naturally cooler temperature, so it is a popular choice for hot sleepers. However, latex foam is generally more expensive than memory foam.

Down

Down feathers are the fine, fluffy feathers from the underbelly of a bird. Down feathers do not have spines and are extremely soft, so they are a popular, traditional material for bedding. Down can be fairly expensive, since it is harvested from birds. But it provides a unique feel that is hard to replicate.

Down Alternatives

Materials meant to replicate the feel of down are called down alternatives. These are generally synthetic, although there are some natural alternatives out there.

Price

As with any purchase, price is a big factor to consider when shopping for a mattress topper. With so many different materials and quality levels, there is a wide range of prices when it comes to mattress toppers. For a basic queen size mattress topper, you can reasonably expect to pay between $50 and $100. However, for toppers of a higher quality with extra features like a cover or straps, expect to pay at least $100 to $200 for a queen size.

Extra Features

Do you want a basic topper or would you prefer to have some additional features? Extras like a cover, straps or a skirt, cooling infusions, a scent, and more can help you decide whether a topper is a good fit for you.

Queen Size Mattress Topper FAQs

What is the best mattress topper on the market today?

There is no one-size-fits-all topper that is best for everyone. It’s important to take your personal needs and preferences into consideration. However, you can take a look at our best mattress topper page to see some great options.

What are the most comfy mattress toppers?

Again, this really depends on your personal preference. Do you like a foam topper or would you prefer something that gives your bed a pillow top feel, like a down or down-alternative topper? Do you sleep hot? And what is your primary sleeping position? All of these questions can help you figure out which topper is best for you.

How much should you pay for a mattress topper?

For a queen size topper, expect to pay between $50 and $400.

Should I size up my sheets if I have a mattress topper?

No, you shouldn’t buy a different size of sheets if you have a mattress topper, as they will be the wrong dimensions for your bed. For example, king size sheets would be way too big for a queen size bed with a topper. However, you may want to invest in sheets with deep pockets on the fitted sheet to ensure it fits all the way around your topper and bed.

Is three inches too much for a mattress topper?

No, three inches is a great thickness for a topper, particularly if you are looking for extra pressure relief or support.
