No pillow is one-size-fits-all. Here are my recommendations for who should try the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow and who would be better off with a different pillow.
Who should try the Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow
- If you are a side sleeper, you should sleep quite comfortably on this pillow. It is cushioning, but supportive and has a high loft to keep your neck in line with your spine, preventing neck pain.
- If you are a hot sleeper, the cool-to-the-touch cover of the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow should appeal to you.
- If you like a responsive, buoyant pillow feel, then the latex-like feel of the Nolah AirFoam should feel nice to you.
Who should not try the Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow
- If you are a back sleeper, I think you will find this pillow too lofty to sleep comfortably. Take a look at our best back sleeper pillows for more options.
- If you are a stomach sleeper, this pillow will be far too firm and lofty for you. Check out our best stomach sleeper pillows for better options.
- If you want a king size pillow, this pillow won’t be a good match for you. It is only available in a queen size.
What Does the Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow Feel Like?
I personally tested the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow to assess its feel, but keep in mind that feel is subjective, so you may have a different experience than I did.
Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow Firmness
Different sleepers are best suited to different firmness levels in pillows. At Sleepopolis, we categorize pillows as either soft, medium, or firm. A soft pillow is best for stomach sleepers, a medium pillow is best for back sleepers, and a firm pillow is best for side sleepers.
I thought the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow had a medium-firm feel. Pressing into the pillow, it feels somewhat squishy and soft, but laying on it the feel is much more buoyant, elevating, and firm. It feels similar to a latex foam pillow, with better responsiveness and bounce than memory foam, but the foam is slightly slower moving than real latex foam.
Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow Loft
Similar to firmness, we categorize pillows by loft, or height. Pillows with a low loft are best for stomach sleepers, pillows with a medium loft are best for back sleepers, and pillows with a high loft are best for side sleepers.
The Nolah Cooling Foam pillow has a loft of six inches, which makes it a high loft pillow.
Now let’s go over my experience testing this pillow in different sleeping positions:
Side — Side sleeping was by far the most comfortable position on this pillow for me. I felt comfortable and my head and neck were supported by this pillow in this position.
Back — I didn’t love this pillow for back sleeping. It felt too firm and my neck was craning upwards in this position.
Stomach — This pillow is definitely too tall and too firm for stomach sleepers. I felt pretty uncomfortable lying on my stomach because my neck was craning.
Under the Arm — I didn’t find this position to be the most comfortable. The pillow’s square shape and firmer feel made it less cozy to hug while lying on my side.
Between the Legs — I found this pillow to be too lofty to sleep with it comfortably between my legs, as my hips felt out of alignment.
What is the Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow Made Of?
Cover: The cover of the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow is made from 100 percent cotton coated in phase-changing Outlast® cooling material, which is made of paraffin wax. This material maintains a cool temperature.
Fill: The fill of this pillow is a block of Nolah AirFoam, the brand’s proprietary foam. Nolah AirFoam is 100 percent polyurethane foam. Nolah says their AirFoam is designed to be contouring, pressure-relieving, durable, and breathable.
Nolah offers this pillow in one size, which is a queen size.

Read Full ReviewIs the Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?
If you sleep hot, having a cooling pillow can do wonders for your comfort at night. Fortunately, I think the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow is a great option for hot sleepers. With “cooling” in the name, it ought to be! What keeps this pillow feeling cool to me is the Outlast® Phase Change Material used to coat the cover of the pillow. It gives the pillow a cool-to-the-touch feel.
Nolah also says their AirFoam is more breathable than traditional memory foam. Based on my experience testing this pillow, I didn’t notice as much heat being trapped by the AirFoam, likely because it didn’t conform around my head and neck as much as traditional memory foam, which uses body heat to mold around you.

I think the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow is a fantastic option for side sleepers and for hot sleepers — if you are a hot sleeper who frequently sleeps on your side, this may just be the pillow for you.
The Nolah AirFoam fill provides a supportive, latex-like feel that’s beneficial for maintaining side sleepers’ spinal alignment. Plus, the high loft of this pillow ensures side sleepers’ necks will be supported. The Outlast® coated cotton cover is also highly effective at maintaining a cool temperature. This Phase Change Material feels cool to the touch and offers great temperature regulation, a pro for hot sleepers.
However, I did not find this pillow particularly comfortable for sleeping on my back or stomach, so I wouldn’t recommend this pillow to them or to combo sleepers. For some better options, take a look at our best pillows for back sleepers and best pillows for stomach sleepers.

Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow Vs
To help you finalize your decision about the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow, let’s compare it to a few other pillows.
Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow vs Nolah AirFiber Pillow
- The Nolah AirFiber pillow’s cover is the same as the Cooling Foam — cotton covered in Outlast® cooling material. However, the fill is 100 percent polyester fiber instead of foam. Additionally, this down-alternative pillow has a more traditional pillow-shape than the Cooling Foam’s rectangular shape.
- Like the Cooling Foam pillow, the Nolah AirFiber sleeps quite cool. The polyester fiber is thin and light, allowing for airflow within the pillow.
- I found this pillow most comfortable for stomach sleepers, as it is quite soft. It could also work for some back/stomach combination sleepers.

Nolah Cooling Foam Pillow vs Nolah Squishy Pillow
- The Nolah Squishy pillow is another memory foam pillow. It is filled with shredded foam, but it also features polyurethane foam pads on the inner cover, giving it a dual chamber design. The cover is a blend of polyester and bamboo viscose.
- The Nolah Squishy is a solid choice for hot sleepers, as bamboo is a cooling material and shredded foam allows for airflow. However, it doesn’t feel cool to the touch the way the Nolah Cooling Foam pillow does. This pillow sleeps more temperature neutral than truly cool.
- Additionally, I found this pillow most comfortable for sleeping on my side.

Nolah Squishy Pillow
The Nolah Squishy pillow definitely lives up to its squishy name! It’s squishy, but the shredded foam fill is very elevating and supportive—making it an especially great pillow for side sleepers, who need to keep their head and neck in alignment.
