The inside is also removable if neither loft option does the trick. Additionally, the luxury pillow is made exclusively from organic cotton and natural latex, making it one of the more eco-friendly and hypoallergenic pillow choices available.
Certified sleep science coach Cait Giddings, who usually sleeps on her side, put the pillow to the test using our thorough review methodology and found its versatility could offer a good choice for combination sleepers on the hunt for a pillow that can adapt. “This pillow has a higher loft that keeps your head and neck in the ideal position for side sleeping, but it also flattens down (and you can remove the inner fill) for well-supported back sleeping,” she said. “I wouldn’t recommend it to strict stomach sleepers, but combination sleepers who sometimes sleep on their stomachs might find this comfortable if they remove the inner fill.”
Cait gave the Saatva Latex pillow an impressive 4.6 out of 5 for her overall experience. As a fan of the “bouncy, springy feel” of many latex pillows, she said she didn’t experience her preferred pillow feel with this particular latex model, but enjoyed the Saatva’s “plush-feeling softness,” which offered hotel-pillow-like comfort and breathability without compromising support.
Saatva Latex Pillow Materials
The Saatva Latex pillow’s construction is unique in that it essentially offers multiple pillows in one. Let me explain. Beyond offering two loft options, the pillow has a customizable build. “It has so many layers to it that it’s like a pillow turducken, with pillow zipped inside pillow, zipped inside pillow,” Cait says. “The fill is adjustable, so you can unzip the pillow cover to get to the primary pillow layer and then further adjust that to get to the inner pillow (which is removable). All of these layers are nice and high-quality, and it comes with a clear bag to contain the removable filling when you’re not using it inside the pillow.” Overall, after testing, she gave the pillow a perfect 5 for 5 material score.
Moreover, I’d say the Saatva Latex pillow’s construction lives up to its luxury reputation. Saatva didn’t cut corners or source cheap materials for this pillow. The washable outer layer is made from 100-percent high-quality organic cotton. Saatva’s interior is sourced from plant-based down alternative microdenier fibers and all-natural, mildew-resistant American Talalay latex foam, rather than the less hypoallergenic synthetic latex (which typically requires way more off-gassing when first using it) that you might find in cheaper pillows. The pillow’s natural latex is also Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified, meaning it contains at least 95-percent organic raw materials and is free of harmful toxins.
Saatva Latex Pillow Care
Despite its fairly intricate design, there’s nothing complicated about keeping the Saatva Latex pillow clean. According to our tester Cait, “The directions are clear and pretty standard for pillows. You can machine-wash the cover and outer pillow layer, but not the interior fill. This makes it fairly easy to keep this pillow clean and feeling fresh.”
I’d also say that due to its eco-friendly construction, you may find the pillow staying fresher longer. Its all-organic cotton pillowcase is highly breathable and moisture-wicking. Furthermore, Saatva uses natural latex, which also likely helps to keep the pillow feeling and smelling fresher over time. Notably, natural latex is known for its antimicrobial properties and being particularly resistant to mildew, dust mites, and mold buildup. However, if you need to clean the latex inner core of the pillow, Saatva suggests spot cleaning it with water and a mild detergent, then allowing the material to air dry away from direct sunlight.
Overall, Cait gave the pillow a 5 for 5 for the ease of taking care of it, which should catch the attention of anyone seeking a more hypoallergenic pillow who wants to avoid headaches when it comes to cleaning time.
How the Saatva Latex Pillow Feels in Every Sleep Position
According to Saatva, its latex pillow is meant for all types of sleepers. In many ways, the pillow’s adjustability may make that the case, but we put the brand’s claim to the test. Cait found the pillow to be great for side and back sleepers, but not so much for stomach sleepers. Below, you can see the results of her tests on how the pillow performs in each sleeping position.
Saatva Latex Pillow Performance for Side Sleepers
According to Dr. Dasgupta, “Side sleepers need a medium-firm or thicker pillow to fill the gap between the head and shoulders.” Furthermore, according to Sleepopolis managing editor and certified sleep science coach Dan Caffrey, most side sleepers should use a pillow that has a high loft. Saatva offers both a standard loft (4 to 6 inches) and a higher loft option (6 to 7 inches); I’d recommend the higher loft option for side sleepers.
Our tester, Cait, who is usually a side sleeper, tried out the Saatva Latex pillow on her side, and said, “This pillow doesn’t have my preferred responsive latex feel, but it’s very comfortable and fluffy for side sleeping, which is my preferred position.” She also appreciated the loft in the pillow she tested on her side, saying, “This pillow has a higher loft that keeps your head and neck in the ideal position for side sleeping.”
After weeks of sleeping on the pillow, she also noted that, “I think this pillow delivers the ideal amount of lofted support and pressure relief for side sleeping.”
Saatva Latex Pillow Performance for Back Sleepers
According to Dan Caffrey, most back sleepers will prefer a medium loft (4 to 5 inches) pillow. “This is a good loft for back sleepers as it keeps the head lifted, but not so aggressively that it causes the neck to crane out of position,” he explained. Given this, I suggest back sleepers go with the standard loft version of the Saatva Latex pillow.
When Cait tried out the Saatva Latex pillow on her back, she also found quality results. “I found that it wasn’t too lofted for back sleeping, particularly when you remove the inner fill,” she said. “I like that the pillow doesn’t separate and gap in the middle where my head is, leaving me stuck in the unexpected pillow cleavage.”
Furthermore, despite her go-to sleeping position being on her side, she found a “good amount of support and pressure relief” when she tried the pillow on her back, as well.
Saatva Latex Pillow Performance for Stomach Sleepers
Dan Caffrey suggests stomach sleepers opt for a low-loft pillow (2 to 3 inches). “This loft is best suited for stomach sleepers as it helps to prevent the upper body from dipping out of alignment with the hips,” he explains. While the Saatva allows you to remove the entire filling for minimal loft, it may still not be worth it for stomach sleepers, according to Cait.
After trying the pillow on her stomach, Cait warned, “It’s definitely too fluffy for stomach sleepers, who need a low, flat pillow.” However, considering the pillow’s adjustability, some combination sleepers who end up on their stomachs may find what they need, according to Cait. “I wouldn’t recommend it to stomach sleepers, but combination sleepers might find this comfortable if they remove the inner fill,” she said.
While minimal loft may be achieved with this pillow, I think, based on Cait’s experience and the price of the Saatva Latex, stomach sleepers may want to grab a pillow that’s designed with their needs in mind, like one of our best pillows for stomach sleepers.
