Is the Casper Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Depending on your preferred sleeping position, body type, and whether or not you sleep with a partner or pet, the Casper Hybrid may or may not work for you. Take a look at some of my recommendations below.
Who I recommend the Casper Hybrid mattress for
- I think this bed could be an excellent option for back sleepers. The top foam layers are soft enough to fill in the space at the lower back while the pocketed coils are bouncy enough to lift the hips in line with the shoulders.
- Speaking of bounce, the Casper Hybrid could be an awesome mattress for combination sleepers. This bed is highly mobile, so these folks should have no trouble moving around and changing positions in the night.
- Thanks to its breathable foam comfort layer and airflow-promoting coil layer, the Casper Hybrid sleeps quite cool, making it a nice option for hot sleepers.
Who I don’t recommend the Casper Hybrid mattress for
- Unfortunately, this bed isn’t quite firm enough to support the needs of heavier sleepers. These folks need a robust structure with plenty of lift, so you may want to explore options on our best mattress for heavy people page.
- I’d also say that the bed isn’t soft enough to satisfy the needs of strict side sleepers. If you occasionally turn onto your side, you should be fine, but if you keep it in lateral all night long, you may want to go with something more plush, like one of our best memory foam mattresses.
- Conversely, this bed is a bit too soft for strict stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to help keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Read through our best mattress for stomach sleepers review to get some ideas.

How Firm is the Casper Hybrid Mattress?
Now you know who might like this mattress, but how does it actually feel? Well, to start the conversation, let’s examine how firm it is.
As with any feel factor, firmness is subjective, and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. So, my read of this bed’s firmness could differ from your own. For reference, I’m about 5’10”, 190 pounds. and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
After laying on the Casper Hybrid for a while, I decided to give it a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which lines up perfectly with the industry standard for medium firmness.
This bed got a 6.5 from me because I think it strikes a really nice balance between pressure relief and support. The combination of foams and pocketed coils ensures that you get just enough softness to alleviate tension at the shoulders and hips without causing them to dip out of alignment with the rest of the body. This medium-firm vibe could work well for many types of sleepers, but I’d particularly recommend it to back or combo sleepers, both of whom should benefit from the bed’s buoyant lift.
I’d also note that the Casper Hybrid has a zoned support memory foam comfort layer. This means it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the feet and shoulders. This structure helps provide lumbar support and promotes a healthy, straight spinal alignment. Zoned support is a really great feature for anyone who suffers from back pain, as it keeps the spine supported in the healthiest position.

Is the Casper Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should get plenty of support on the Casper Hybrid. These sleepers should feel comfortable on this bed.
- Light Side Sleepers – This bed is too firm for light side sleepers. They should check out other options in my best mattress for side sleepers guide.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Light sleepers should be okay on the Casper Hybrid. Its pocketed coils should help lift their spines into a nice even line from shoulders to hips.
Is the Casper Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Casper Hybrid will feel most comfortable to these folks, who should feel its top layers of foam filling in the space at their lumbar region for some nice pressure relief.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers will get some nice relief at the shoulders and hips as they sink through the bed’s top foams. But, strict side sleepers might find this bed a bit too firm. Average weight sleepers who only spend part of the night on their sides should feel comfortable.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed is too soft for average weight stomach sleeping. Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm structures that position the body squarely on top of the mattress.
Is the Casper Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
Heavy sleepers will likely sink down to the Casper’s coil layer, which will create pressure points that won’t feel comfortable in any sleeping position. I’d recommend choosing a more supportive mattress or a mattress specifically designed for higher body weights. One of our best innerspring mattresses could do the trick.
Casper Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a bed’s capacity for alleviating tension at sensitive spots along the body, such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Good pressure relief often translates to good pain relief.
To test pressure relief, I use a pressure map. I lay it out on the bed, and as I roll around on top it records how much force I’m exerting on the mattress, creating a colored “map” of the pressure. For reference, blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Back Pain – Based on the results above, I’d say the Casper Hybrid is a great option for back pain relief. No high-pressure areas developed around the lower back, and its zoned support layer did a great job keeping my back in a healthy alignment.
Shoulder pain – Based on the yellow and light green around the shoulders on this map, I’d say the Casper Hybrid is not a great fit for sleepers with shoulder pain. I’d opt for one of our best mattresses for shoulder pain to find something more pressure relieving.
Hip Pain – Similarly, I don’t think this bed is a great choice for sleepers with hip pain. Side sleepers with hip pain might feel a bit of stiffness in the area on this bed. However, back sleepers with hip pain could feel comfortable on this bed based on the results above.
Casper Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Let’s wrap our performance section up with a look at how this bed performs for couples. The best mattress for couples usually combines motion transfer, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. I’ll go over how the Casper Hybrid stacks up in all those categories below!
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. If you share a bed, this is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to feel your partner moving around.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pounds. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These motion transfer results are just okay, which tells me that you’re likely to feel your partner’s movements in the night. When you consider how bouncy and supportive this mattress is, it’s no wonder that it doesn’t isolate motion super well.
Sex
Typically, couples will want a mattress that has the best of both worlds: enough motion isolation to keep your partner from waking you in the middle of the night, and sufficient bounce and responsiveness to make moving around during sex easy. I’d say the Casper Hybrid is great for sex, but not so great if you don’t want to be disturbed by your partner getting up in the middle of the night.
Cooling
Two people overheat more easily than one, so a cooling mattress is often a priority for couples. Luckily, the Casper Hybrid’s combination of breathable foams and airflow-encouraging pocketed coils means it sleeps nice and cool.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well a mattress holds up on the sides as compared to the center. A mattress with good edge support will feel larger, since you can sleep comfortably on all of its surface area, which is great for couples. I think the Casper Hybrid had pretty good edge support! I didn’t feel like I was going to fall off the edge while laying there.

The Casper Hybrid mattress combines gentle top layers of foam with pocketed coils to produce a medium firm feel of pressure relief and support. There’s also a little aeration and zoned support thrown into the mix to bring even more advanced comfort to the party. It is one of my top picks for the best hybrid mattresses!

Cover — The Casper Hybrid mattress cover is made of a knit polyester blend, so has a soft and stretchy feel.
Comfort Layer — Beneath the cover, you’ll land on a top layer of aerated foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, so sleepers are likely to sink in slightly for a little pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. While contouring like this would typically make for a hot sleeping experience, the small holes along the material’s surface encourage airflow that all but counteracts this overheating.
Transition Layer — Up next, you’ll land on a layer of memory foam that offers zoned support. What this means is that the section has been divided into three different zones of three different firmnesses. There’s softer foam at the shoulders for a bit of pressure relief and firmer foam at the hips for a little lift. This zoned support helps to establish a balanced vibe and to set the spine a nice, even line.
Support Layer — This bed gets its support from a tall section of pocketed coils, which brings bounce, support, and firmness to the structure. Though sleepers are likely to sink through the top two layers of foam, this springy system is designed to lift them back up again so they don’t feel too “stuck” in the mattress. I should also add that the coils are wrapped in a layer of high-density poly foam edge support, which maximizes the usable surface area of the bed (pssst, this is a great feature for couples).

Casper Hybrid Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Like any bed-in-a-box mattress, the Casper Hybrid has a 24-48 hour off-gassing period. During this time, your mattress will fully decompress and release any trapped gasses in its foams. This may cause your mattress to release a slight odor, but is nothing to be concerned about. If you’re worried about the smell, place your new mattress in a well-ventilated room and avoid adding sheets for a day or so.
