Our testers found this base moved smoothly and effectively, with one proclaiming that this is “the quietest base” they’ve tested thus far. It earned a 4.8 out of 5 score for overall experience, thanks to a plethora of 5-star ratings in noise level, ease of use, and comfort in the zero-gravity position. The base also retails for just under $1,400 for a split-king version, and it comes with a 60-day sleep trial and a 2-year warranty.

Our in-house tester noted that the bed moves “very smoothly” between positions. “You’ll hear the motor for maybe half a second before you actually start feeling the bed move,” she added. The base offers presets for TV-watching, book-reading, anti-snoring, and zero-gravity, plus the option to configure two saved positions yourself.

In the zero-gravity position, our tester felt “incredibly comfortable.” She explained, “I do think there is some good weightlessness here that most people would find relieves pressure. My testing partner, who would be categorized as a heavy tester, also agreed that was the case!”

She was also impressed by how upright you got in the TV-watching position. “I personally would prefer to have my feet slightly elevated because otherwise, I feel a little pressure on my lower back sitting like that for a long time,” she added. But that’s what the option for memory positions is for — the little adjustments to make things just right. 

When moving into either position, the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base was as quiet as a mouse. Our tester recorded decibel readings of 31 and 32 at the peak of the noise, which she described as “akin to the quietest whisper.” She added, “It’s also like a really muted hum, not any annoying squeakiness or pitchiness like you get with some beds.” She noted that the foot of the mattress sounded a bit louder than the head, but that it was ultimately negligible overall. 

While our tester eventually found the base easy to move, she noted that the remote wasn’t the most approachable at first glance. Since there’s a plethora of features with this bed, there are a lot of buttons on the remote, which can make things confusing.

“I don’t love the remote, but after you use it a few times, it’s not too bad,” she conceded. She did have to look up directions a few times for more complicated processes, like how to reset a memory position or unstuck the base when her partner accidentally locked it, but was ultimately able to find quick and practical answers.

The Saatva brand name is synonymous with luxury, so if you want that high-end touch to your new adjustable bed, check out the Adjustable Base Plus. It earned a 4.4 out of 5 rating for overall experience, plus a perfect score for its zero-gravity functionality. A split king normally retails for $2,500, so it is a bit pricey, but you’ll also get free assembly and a 15-year warranty with your purchase. 

We got the chance to test out the split king version of the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus, and it was a big hit with our in-house tester. “It’s smooth even when only one side adjusts at a time,” she explained. “I didn’t notice any jerking or rough movement at all, and it moves quickly enough that you’re not waiting forever to get into position, but slowly enough that it feels safe.”

The zero-gravity positioning (designated as ZG on the remote) also earned a thumbs-up: “This is a fantastic choice if you’re a back sleeper and you want to relieve pressure on your lower back,” she said. “Of course, I think that it’s important to have a good mattress for back pain, along with the frame, but I do believe this position would be helpful.” She was also able to achieve a comfortable seated position in TV-watching mode, but noted that she would probably elevate her feet for more pressure relief in this position. 

“This base does adjust mostly quietly,” our tester said after giving the noise test a whirl. She recorded decibel readings of 35 dB and 41 dB. “This isn’t loud, but it is different,” she added. “Some adjustable bases just have a soft whirring noise, but this one is slightly more high-pitched.” She still didn’t think it would disrupt sleep, but it’s something to keep in mind if you have sensitive ears.

To control the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus, you’re blessed with both an app hookup and a wireless remote. This remote has a total of 16 buttons, which our tester thought was a touch too many. You could likely figure out which is which by process of elimination, depending on how familiar you are with adjustable bases, but it requires some practice and trial-and-error. 

Our tester encountered the most difficulty when trying to reset a saved position. She said, “ I tried looking up instructions online and found several options. Turns out, you have to unplug the base and totally reset it to reprogram it.”

My colleague Riley Otis gave the DreamCloud Premier Adjustable Bed Frame a whirl and found it to be a “pretty standard adjustable base” that “operated as expected.” She described it as “smooth, quick, and with minimal noise.” This extended to the setup of the frame; she unboxed a split king base, which came as two separate twin XL bases, and she was able to put them together on her own.

Riley described the noise when the base moved as a “slight whirring.” She recorded decibel readings of about 35 dB, which is still on the lower end. She added, “It’s not incredibly loud or disturbing.” Sleepers with sensitive ears should likely be able to sleep through their partners who are making any adjustments, thanks to the relatively quiet motors.

“With this base, you have your basic head and leg elevation, anti-snore, zero-gravity, flat, and two customizable presets,” Riley explained. She was especially impressed with the zero-gravity preset, saying that she felt “weightless with zero pressure building at the lower back.” She added, “It really does place you in the most optimum position.”

Riley was surprised to discover that the base had no TV preset, which we would consider a common feature among even the most basic adjustable bases. “To achieve this level of elevation, you’ll have to press the up button continuously,” she said.

Adjustable bases are basically built for back sleepers. Spinal alignment is key for this sleeping position, and it’s more easily achieved through the zero-gravity preset or your own tweaks and adjustments to find comfort. One of our in-house testers, coincidentally a back sleeper, loved the Helix Adjustable Base for this position: “I am a back sleeper and often have to shift to my side to get more comfortable, but if I had a bed like this, I could totally sleep on my back all night,” she said.

She rated her experience with this base at a 4.8 out of 5, awarding it 5-out-of-5 ratings for ease of use and its zero-gravity position. Note that you will have to purchase two separate twin XL bases to make a split-king base, which comes to a combined total of about $1,700. Our in-house tester found that maneuvering the base was “very smooth,” and even liked the feel of the remote. “The remote itself is easy to use, but it may take a minute to acclimate yourself to all the buttons,” she explained. There are a ton of presets to choose from, including three memory positions, TV, and that beloved zero-gravity, which should be great for back sleepers seeking a comfortable sleep surface.

“I love this zero-g position,” said our in-house tester, who also happens to be a back sleeper. “The head and feet angles are fantastic for making you feel weightless. I felt no pressure in my lower back at all, which is where I usually feel it.” This pressure relief could also prove useful for back sleepers dealing with back pain in that area.

Our tester was also impressed by the intensity of the massage. Usually, these beds only produce a gentle vibration that’s great for soothing you to sleep. But our tester likened it to a massage gun, and had the physical evidence to prove its power: “When I use massage guns, my nose starts itching. When I have used other massaging adjustable bases, nothing happens. But my nose started itching on the Helix! So it must be a good, powerful massage!”

Even though the decibel reading for this base’s noise test ran a bit high, our tester wasn’t about to write it off as a loud frame. “A measure of 45 dB is allegedly like ‘rustling leaves’” or a whisper,” she explained. “This is a touch louder than the other bases I have tested, though no noise from it is loud, clanking, or disruptive.”

She also noticed that moving the bed from a totally flat position seemed to start the motor about two seconds early before the bed actually started moving. “It’s not an issue or a dealbreaker,  just something I noticed,” she added.

The Ascension Luxe earned an overall experience rating of 4.8 out of, thanks to perfect scores in noise level and zero-gravity comfort. While the base is currently on final sale, it also comes with a limited 10-year warranty.

Our in-house tester noted there was no “jerking or unexpected movement” when adjusting from position to position on this base. “It’s very smooth, even with a large mattress on the base,” she explained. “I don’t really have any complaints in regards to construction or functionality!”

But where this base really shined was our noise test. Our tester called it “incredibly quiet,” only recording a max decibel reading of 33. “This is akin to a ‘soft rainfall’ or ‘low whisper,’” she added. “There are no clanking or metallic sounds.” She added that she would gladly use a white noise machine that had the same hum, so it’s unlikely that sleepers will find this low level of noise disturbing. 

This base only has one zero-gravity preset, but our tester called it “so lovely.” She said, “This is wildly comfortable if you’re a back sleeper. Sleeping with your feet elevated is a great way to relieve back pain in that position.” But she added that sleeping on your side or stomach wouldn’t produce the same results, as it would throw off your spinal alignment. 

This is truly more of a bare-bones adjustable base. You don’t get the option to set your own positions, which our tester briefly lamented. “It does work fantastic and won’t give you any trouble, but I’m a little surprised that it doesn’t have any extras, like custom settings,” she said. If you’re looking for a massage without a trip to the spa, you might like the Enhanced model of the Silk & Snow Adjustable Bed. This adjustable frame has independent head-and-foot massage available in three intensities; though you won’t get a shiatsu deep-tissue massage, it’s definitely going to give those good vibrations. My colleague Riley Otis likened it to “being on a school bus that’s flying down the backroads.”

This frame was a favorite of Riley’s to test, earning a number of 5-out-of-5 ratings in remote control design, ease of use, and zero-gravity comfort. She rated her overall experience at an impressive 4.9 out of 5. The split-king model runs you anywhere from $1,800 to $2,000, depending on sales. However, It comes with a 30-day return policy, and after that, it’s backed by a 10-year warranty.

Riley thought that using this base was a “very smooth ride,” and that it was totally “tricked out.” She noted that the massage was very customizable, allowing you to choose different intensities at the head and foot of your mattress. She also noted that it did make a sound, but nothing jarring: “It isn’t loud, but it is audible,” she said.

It was also easy to control on the remote, which she noted was an “aesthetically pleasing” speckled tan color. “Everything is intuitive and clearly labeled,” she said. “Although you do have to press down on the massage button to turn it off, which I didn’t realize at first.”

Alongside the massage features, the Silk & Snow Adjustable Bed Enhanced also features a movable lumbar support bar for even more comfort. Riley called it her “favorite part” of the frame. “The lumbar support bar is in the middle of the bed, which you can raise and lower via the remote. This helps fill in the space in the lower back, which feels super nice, even as someone without back pain,” she explained.

She added that the zero-gravity position would work great for sleepers experiencing body pain. “The weightless sensation is really soothing and helps take tension off the lower back,” she said. And while she wouldn’t recommend the TV-position for pressure relief, she found it comfortable when writing her testing notes on her laptop.

The Silk & Snow Adjustable Bed Enhanced did reach a 40 dB reading during Riley’s noise test, which is a bit higher than what we saw from other beds. “You can definitely hear the base moving, but it’s not super-loud and obnoxious,” she explained.
