Bed frames might not be the flashiest piece of furniture in your home, but they are one of the most essential, especially if you want to squeeze the most out of your square footage. Storage beds serve double duty by providing a secure foundation for your mattress and keeping clutter at bay with drawers, lift-up platforms, or hidden compartments.

However, with so many options available, finding the right bed frame for your setup can feel like scouring through an overcrowded closet. Fortunately, our team of product testers (literally) did all the heavy lifting for you to make the choice easy.

My fellow sleep product testers and I performed hands-on tests of dozens of today’s best sellers to find the cream of the crop. Each model in this guide is well-built, space-conscious, and thoughtfully designed for real-life use.

In 2024 alone, we helped over 14,000 people (and over 60,000 since 2014) find a new bed and other sleep accessories. Our certified sleep science coaches have personally tested more than 300 beds and sleep accessories in our Charlotte, NC, studio using our comprehensive testing methodology, including all the bed frames featured here.

To ensure our picks are backed by professional insight, we also consulted our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who helped verify that our testing methodology aligns with the latest in sleep health.

Read on to see which storage bed is the smartest space-saver for your home.

Our Top Pick

The Saatva Amalfi Storage Bed earned our top spot because it encapsulates the three pillars of a great storage bed, outperforming most of its competitors on every front with its smooth hydraulic system, deep underbed storage, and high-quality materials. Our product tester also praised its rock-solid build and high-end upholstery.

What I Looked For in the Best Bed Frames With Storage

To find the best storage bed frames, my fellow product testers and I assessed each model firsthand in our Charlotte, NC, studio using our thorough review methodology. We built every bed ourselves, tested them with real mattresses and two people on the bed, and graded every frame based on how well it balanced functionality, durability, and comfort.

  • Assembly: We scored assembly based on how easy or complicated it was to put the bed frame together using the provided instructions and tools. A smoother assembly process means less frustration and fewer chances of structural issues down the line.
  • Materials: Our team also considered the quality and durability of the bed frame’s components, including the slats, hydraulics, and outer frame. Better materials typically lend themselves to longer-lasting performance and heightened resistance to wear and tear over time.
  • Overall Experience: Overall experience refers to how the bed frame felt once fully assembled. We considered its stability, noise level, and ease of use. This category helps determine whether a bed frame performs well in everyday use and improves your sleep experience without becoming a nuisance.

Cons

Higher price point compared to basic frames

The gold standard in storage bed frames should nail down two things: form and function. The Saatva Amalfi Storage Bed deserves the top spot because it does just that. While many storage beds struggle with flimsy parts or cramped compartments, the Amalfi stands out for its exceptional build quality, smooth hydraulic system, and polished design. Our product testers awarded the Amalfi 4.5 stars or more in assembly, materials, and experience, making it one of the highest-performing models in our testing lineup.

The Amalfi came with clear instructions and all the necessary tools for setup, which only took about an hour. An hour is more than reasonable considering the extra steps required to assemble the storage compartment. We rated it 4.5 out of 5 for assembly. Although it’s perfectly possible to build it without additional tools, you might find it quicker with a drill. And while Saatva offers free in-room delivery, setup is not included.

Materials were another high point for the Amalfi, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 rating from our testers. This upholstered bed features a plush headboard and a robust hydraulic lift system that effortlessly raises the mattress to reveal deep, spacious storage beneath. “The hydraulics seem strong,” said product tester Sosha Lewis. “I don’t think anything in this bed frame will wear out any time soon.”

Most importantly, the real-world sleep experience was just as impressive. Sosha and fellow tester Livvi DiCicco both praised the bed’s rock-solid feel, even when sharing it, and unanimously agreed on another 5 out of 5 rating in this category.

“I didn’t notice any noise when I was moving around on this bed frame,” said Livvi. “Everything was super sturdy, and I have no complaints. Opening and closing the storage compartment was frictionless.”

The Amalfi’s only real drawbacks are that its assembly takes a little longer than simpler frames, and its $2,595 price tag for a queen-size is a splurge. However, the Amalfi is a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to combine smart storage, lasting durability, and luxury-level comfort.

Folks looking for a regal storage bed to accommodate their king-sized mattress should look no further than the Thuma Classic Bed. This kingly bed frame boasts a solid wood construction and sleek, mid-century modern design. When paired with the additional underbed storage drawers, it provides discreet and easy-access storage without compromising its good looks. During testing, our team awarded it 4 stars or more in the materials and overall experience categories.

From the moment she began unboxing the Thuma, product tester Kayla Godfrey was struck by the wooden bed frame’s premium feel and thoughtful design, giving it a perfect 5 out of 5 in the materials category.

“The Thuma bed frame is rock-solid,” Kayla said. “I love the finish of the bed, and you can tell it’s solid wood.”

Thuma Underbed Drawers
A closer look at the Thuma’s underbed drawers.

The underbed drawers, which can be added for an additional cost, further enhance its functionality, especially in the spacious king-size bed. These drawers glide smoothly and offer generous capacity, making them a smart upgrade for anyone looking to keep their space tidy while maintaining a minimalist look.

Once assembled and tested in our Charlotte, NC, studio, the Thuma Classic continued to impress. Kayla and her testing partner transferred it to different rooms with different flooring to assess its stability and performance.

“The bed does not make noise when sitting on it or moving around,” Kayla reported. “I tried it on a hardwood floor and carpet, and in both settings, it performed great for noise. With two people on it, it did make a slight noise of the wood shifting, but it wasn’t too noticeable.” This smooth, quiet performance earned it another 5 out of 5 for overall experience.

That said, assembly wasn’t completely seamless. Kayla rated it a 3 out of 5 in that category due to unclear instructions surrounding the optional upholstered headboard.

“This wood bed frame is straightforward to install and did not take long at all,” Kayla said. “However, I got confused when it came time to attach the headboard. The instructions regarding the headboard were a little unclear to me, but everything else was very intuitive.”

At $1,835 (and $1,345 without) for the classic king size with a set of two underbed drawers, the Thuma Classic does sit on the higher end of the price spectrum. However, its exceptional build quality, timeless style, and the ability to add storage make it a high-value solution for anyone seeking a quality bed frame that is upgradable.

Silk & Snow Bed Frame with Storage – Best Twin Bed Frame With Storage

If you have a smaller space or need to furnish a guest or kid’s room, a twin bed frame with storage can be a game-changer. The Silk & Snow Bed Frame with Storage stands out as a strong, stylish, and space-saving option. This compact yet durable storage bed earned a 4 out of 5 or better in the materials, noise, and experience categories from our product testers, making it our pick for the best twin-size bed frame with storage.

Product tester Cait Giddings praised the Silk & Snow bed frame’s sturdy construction and refined finish, awarding it a 4-star rating for materials. This bed frame is made with high-quality upholstery, solid wood legs, and poplar wood slats, and is free of flame retardants and toxic materials.

“The cover fabric feels pretty smooth and high-quality and not ratty or cheap,” Cait said. “The base doesn’t seem like it will show signs of wear very quickly. I bounced a bit on the mattress, and it didn’t feel like it would shift or break beneath me.”

The Silk & Snow also doesn’t cut corners when it comes to stability. During testing, Cait noted its strong, unmoving foundation and nearly silent performance, even during more active use. These qualities earned it a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 in the experience and noise categories.

“The bed felt extremely secure and like it was in no danger of moving or budging while I bounced on it,” she said. “It made zero noise when I moved around.”

Unfortunately, the Silk & Snow bed frame isn’t without its drawbacks. Assembly was a bit of a headache, since the storage bed came with no instructions. However, Cait and her testing partner still managed to put it together in under 45 minutes thanks to its intuitive design.

Storage-wise, the drawer design may fall short for those planning to stow heavier or bulkier items. Cait noted that the drawer mechanism felt a bit flimsy, and the magnet meant to hold it shut was on the weaker side. We don’t think this will be an issue if you are storing lightweight items, such as linens, books, toys, or other small objects. But it’s still something to remember, depending on your needs.

Allewie Storage Bed – Best Affordable Bed Frame With Storage

Allewie Lift-Up Storage Bed

Allewie Lift-Up Storage Bed

This lift-up platform bed combines hidden storage with a sleek, upholstered design, ideal for maximizing small spaces.

Pros
Lift-up storage provides ample space for bedding and more
Upholstered design adds a luxurious touch
Budget-friendly option for small-space solutions
Cons
Assembly can be time-consuming
Storage base may feel less sturdy than premium models

At just under $300 for a queen-sized bed frame, the Allewie Storage Bed is a solid choice for folks looking for extra storage on a budget. This affordable bed frame is available on Amazon and features sturdy metal components, a headboard, and ample storage space. During testing, Riley Otis and I gave it a 4 out of 5 for its materials and our overall experience.

When Riley and I opened the package, I was initially impressed by its metal components and sturdy accent pieces. After assembling it and using it to test a mattress, I found it surprisingly sturdy at its price point. However, I docked off a point and gave it a 4 out of 5 for materials because its headboard was a bit wobbly when it wasn’t up against a wall.

When everything comes together, it offers solid performance for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the coming together part proved to be a bit of a headache for Riley and me. After an assembly full of blood, sweat, and tears, we settled on a 3 out of 5 in this category.

The written instructions were minimal, and the black-and-white illustrations were unclear. We ended up reassembling a few components before getting it right.

That said, I still gave the Allewie Storage Bed a 4 out of 5 for overall experience. Once it’s assembled, it offers ample storage that’s easy to use. The storage bed lifts the mattress to reveal a spacious storage compartment. And when it’s up against a wall, it’s nearly silent and doesn’t wobble. While it’s not the most opulent option on this list, it’s still a more than worthy addition to any bedroom at its price point.

Other Storage Beds I Considered

While the beds featured in our main roundup stood out for their balance of design, durability, and user experience, there was one other that came close to landing on our list. This option still offers solid performance and could be a great fit depending on your needs.

Puffy Midnight Foundation

The Puffy Midnight Foundation is a no-fuss metal bed frame ideal for shoppers who want an easy setup without sacrificing functionality. One of its main selling points is its tool-free assembly, allowing you to save precious time and elbow grease. It also provides ample underbed clearance, which makes for convenient and discreet storage. However, at just over 15 inches tall, the Puffy Midnight may be too elevated for some, especially in smaller rooms. It also doesn’t include a headboard or footboard.

Nectar Zadilyn Bed Frame

The Nectar Zadilyn Bed Frame is a stylish option that offers built-in storage and a high-quality outer frame and headboard. Both its outer frame and the headboard feature dense wood that feels sturdy and substantial. It’s a good fit for those who want a modern design with a cohesive, finished look. Unfortunately, the drawers themselves felt noticeably flimsier in comparison and lacked the smooth glide the other models had. The assembly also proved to be difficult, as our product testers eventually had to break out a cordless drill to complete the setup.

How We Picked and Tested These Storage Beds

When searching for the best storage bed frames to feature on this list, my fellow product testers and I got hands-on with each model in our Charlotte, NC, studio. We assembled, loaded, lifted, and slept on every frame to simulate real-life use. Storage beds offer space-saving convenience, but they can also be challenging to assemble and use. That’s why we focused on the entire experience: from unboxing and setup to comfort, functionality, and long-term durability.

Assembly

Storage bed frames can be a huge pain to assemble compared to standard models. You’re looking at extra hardware, heavier components, and integrated drawers or hydraulic lifts, which often means more work upfront. That didn’t stop us.

After we completed our testing, we narrowed it down to the beds where the butter was worth the churn. These are models that justified the additional headaches with excellent performance and thoughtful design.

For each frame, our testers followed the included instructions and used the provided tools to build the bed. We graded them based on the clarity of directions, labeling of parts, and overall setup time, noting any surprises or pitfalls along the way.

Materials

Once assembled, we put each storage bed through a series of real-world tests. With a mattress and two people on the frame, we evaluated stability, noise, and comfort.

We also factored in how the storage felt to use in practice. Could we use its mechanism to easily lift a mattress? Did its drawers glide smoothly, or did they stick and rattle? The best storage beds in our roundup provided a frictionless, nearly silent experience, even when opening compartments or moving around in bed.

Overall Experience

Bed frames with storage compartments often have to withstand more wear and tear than their standard counterparts, which is why we carefully evaluated the materials. Models made from solid wood, high-gauge steel, durable upholstery, and reinforced joinery earned higher marks during our tests.

We also put the quality of the storage compartments themselves to the test. Beds that stood out had tear-resistant fabrics, smooth-operating drawer slides or hydraulic systems, and hardware that felt like it could withstand daily use.

What to Consider When Buying a Bed Frame With Storage

Storage bed frames are a smart way to squeeze more out of your space. They go a long way in smaller rooms or homes with limited square footage. However, it’s essential to consider a few things before you hit “add to cart.”

Room Size

Before committing to a storage bed, consider the clearance you have around its perimeter. If your storage bed has drawers, ensure you have enough space on either side to extend. For lift-up models, you need vertical clearance and room at the foot of the bed. Tight or awkward layouts may make one type of storage more practical than another.

A close look at the underbed drawers for a Thuma Classic Bed Frame
These huge drawers need some room for access.

When planning for a studio apartment, guest room, or dorm, measure the area to ensure the drawers won’t hit walls, dressers, nightstands, and other bedroom furniture. Beds with front-lifting storage or high-clearance drawers can provide much-needed functionality in rooms where space is at a premium.

Size and Weight Capacity

Storage beds tend to be heavier and bulkier than traditional bed frames and platform beds. Make sure the one you want is appropriately sized for your room and durable enough to support your mattress (and whoever will be sleeping on it). A twin or full-sized storage bed is ideal for kids or single sleepers, while queen-size beds and king-size beds provide ample space for couples.

Check the manufacturer’s specs for weight limits, particularly if the bed includes lift mechanisms or sliding drawers. These components should be able to withstand the weight of the mattress and any items stored inside without warping, sagging, or snapping.

Price

Bed frames with storage usually cost more than those without. Expect to pay a premium from a few hundred dollars for a basic model to a couple of thousand for elevated designs with high-end finishes or upholstery.

If you’re working within a budget, focus on models that effectively blend durability and design. Simple, well-constructed storage beds offer better long-term value than flashy but flimsy alternatives. Also, remember that some beds come with storage included, while others require a separate purchase of drawers or lifts.

Warranty and Trial Period

These bed frames often come with moving parts and complicated hardware, making a solid warranty a must-have. Look for brands that offer at least a one-year warranty to cover defects in materials or craftsmanship, and don’t shy away from asking about drawer tracks, hydraulic lifts, or upholstery.

Some manufacturers offer in-home trial periods, which can help you decide whether the bed fits your space and meets your expectations. While these trials are more common for mattresses, some brands extend similar policies to their accessories for added peace of mind.

Storage Bed FAQs

How much space do you need for a storage bed?

You will need enough clearance around the sides or foot of the bed to open drawers or lift the mattress fully. Always check the bed’s specific dimensions and storage mechanism before buying.

Do you need a box spring?

Most storage beds are platform-style and do not require a box spring. Platform storage beds already include a solid or slatted support base for your mattress.

How is a storage bed different from a daybed?

A storage bed is a full-sized bed frame with built-in compartments underneath, while a daybed is typically a twin-size frame designed to double as a sofa, often without dedicated storage.

Should you buy a storage bed in-store or online?

Buying online gives you access to a wider range of styles and customer reviews. However, in-store shopping may help get a better feel for a bed frame’s materials and storage mechanisms. Either can work depending on your comfort level.
