Fibromyalgia is a condition in which individuals experience pain all across their body, particularly in their muscles and joints. It can be a debilitating ailment, especially when it comes to catching high-quality Zzz’s. We’re here to help these sleepers find a mattress that will hopefully allow them to sleep better with less pain.
As a certified sleep science coach, mattresses are my niche. I’ve spent the past three years learning the ins and outs of mattresses, working with a team of expert testers in our Sleepopolis studio located in Charlotte, NC. Together, we’ve evaluated over 330 mattresses for key performance indicators, such as pressure relief, cooling, responsiveness, edge support, and more.
Our quantitative and qualitative data help us make very specific recommendations to different sleepers based on their individual body type, sleeping position, and preferences. We also work with an invaluable team of medical experts, including our quadruple board-certified Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who provides us with expert advice on various sleep issues.
Additionally, I consulted our Chief Medical Product Tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS, who evaluates mattresses in our studio for different chronic pain conditions. Several of these mattresses were approved by Dr. Tedesco for different pain-related issues, with many earning his stamp of approval– a rating of 4 stars or higher.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the top 8 mattresses for fibromyalgia. I’ll provide a quick review of each bed, highlighting its wins and discussing its downfalls. Once we have reviewed the mattress lineup, I’ll cover everything you need to know about how we test mattresses and how to determine which one is right for you, with a focus on sleepers with fibromyalgia.
Our Top Pick for Fibromyalgia
I chose the Helix Midnight Elite as the best overall mattress for fibromyalgia because it earned a perfect 5-star rating for pressure relief in both the side- and back-sleeping positions and it is a super supportive mattress. We were also impressed by its 4.5-star cooling and 5-star responsiveness, which can help people with fibromyalgia patients find better quality sleep.

What I Looked For in the Best Mattress for Fibromyalgia
Here at Sleepopolis, our team of expert testers and certified sleep science coaches use a rigorous testing methodology to evaluate mattresses, which helps us make detailed recommendations to different sleepers depending on their individual needs. When considering mattresses for sleepers with fibromyalgia, I focused on the following key categories.
Pressure Relief: To help alleviate tension along the body and promote better sleep quality, I looked for mattresses that properly cushion the hips, shoulders, and lower back in both the stomach and back sleeping positions. I paid attention to how our testers felt in each position, as well as their body type, when recommending these beds to different sleepers.
Spinal Alignment: If a mattress lacks proper support, your hips may dip below the shoulders, causing unnatural bending of the spine and, therefore, pain. When choosing mattresses to recommend to people with fibromyalgia, I looked for sturdy support that wasn’t too firm, to better achieve a weightless sensation and prevent back pain.
Cooling: Temperature sensitivity can be common in people with fibromyalgia, who may experience aggravated symptoms if they’re too hot or too cold. When choosing beds for this round-up, I looked for stellar temperature regulation to prevent overheating and help the sleeper feel temperature neutral.
Responsiveness: Since sleepers with fibromyalgia have a high pain sensitivity, they may find it difficult to move around and switch sleeping positions, which causes more frequent wake-ups. I looked for highly responsive mattresses that are easy to toss and turn on, or are bouncy enough to facilitate a smooth transition between positions.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Side Sleepers
The pillow top and layer of memory foam should give these folks plenty of softness and contouring.
Couples
Those who sleep with a partner should appreciate the bed’s cooling abilities, as well as its edge support, responsiveness, and motion isolation.
Pros of the Helix Midnight Elite
This highly luxurious version of the standard Helix Midnight comes with a quilted pillow top, zoned lumbar support, and reinforced edge support.
The mattress should sleep fairly cool, thanks to its breathable foams and springs.
The alternating structure of foams and coils (there are several layers of each) makes for a good amount of pressure relief and support.
Cons of the Helix Midnight Elite
It’s not going to be an ideal fit for stomach sleepers. They’ll need something more supportive to keep their hips elevated and in line with their shoulders. See our best mattresses for stomach sleepers for more options.
It’s also a very expensive mattress. If you’re on a budget, check out our best cheap mattresses.

Helix has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. The Midnight is one of their medium models. It has enough contouring for side sleepers, but should still be supportive enough for back sleepers, as long as they don’t mind a softer bed. The Elite is the ultra-luxurious version of this mattress, with added features such as extra height, a quilted pillow top, additional layers of foams and coils, and more. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think side sleepers will love the combination of the soft, cushiony top layers and zoned support for their hips and shoulders. The Helix Midnight Elite is also a great match for back sleepers who want a plush pillow top feel without compromising back support and pressure relief.” – Bridget Chapman, mattress tester
If you experience fibromyalgia pain, you may experience relief from a mattress that balances pressure relief and spinal support to create a weightless sensation along the entire body. For a bed with supreme pressure relief that’s compatible with all body types and sleeping positions, you can’t go wrong with the Helix Midnight Elite. Not only did this mattress earn a perfect 5-star score for pressure relief when back and side sleeping, but it also earned a score of 4.4 stars or higher across almost every testing category, making it one of our top-performing mattresses.
To better understand how a mattress feels for different types of sleepers, we invite three testers of different weight classes — lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight — to lie on their backs and sides, and then provide their individual pressure relief scores for each position. Typically, your body type and preferred sleeping position largely determine how far you sink into a mattress, and therefore how much pressure relief you experience. However, we were pleasantly surprised that every single tester provided a 5-star rating for back and side sleeping.
I personally helped test this mattress for pressure relief, and I can confirm that this bed is the real deal. With a firmness score of 6 out of 10, this mattress offers a true medium-soft to medium-firm feel. This firmness level is thought to be the best for fibromyalgia pain, as it helps evenly disperse body weight and cradle sensitive joints. Whether I was lying on my back or my side, the supportive microcoils and individually wrapped coils kept my hips in line with my shoulders and maintained my spine’s straight alignment. However, the plush pillow top and layers of memory foam wrapped around my body’s natural curves, relieving pressure from all areas.
The Midnight Elite’s pressure map results.
In addition to chronic pain along the body, some with fibromyalgia notice their symptoms worsening if they’re too hot or too cold, so it’s important to maintain a neutral temperature. Luckily, the Midnight Elite contains luxury cooling features designed to help regulate the sleeper’s temperature, such as a cooling cover, gel-infused foam, and coils that promote airflow. I was impressed by the cool-to-the-touch surface, which felt super soothing when I lay down after a long day of moving mattresses around.
My colleague Sosha Lewis agreed, saying, “It warmed up a bit under my body, but was still cool to the touch in some spots.” After we lay on the bed for five minutes, its temperature had increased by 5.9 degrees, which indicates good temperature regulation and earns 4.5 stars for cooling.
Sosha was also impressed by how easy it was to switch between sleeping positions on this bed. Although some plush pillow tops inhibit motion, she didn’t run into any issues while testing the Midnight Elite, so she rated it 5 stars for responsiveness. After tossing and turning a bit, she said, “It was extremely easy to switch positions. I wasn’t sure how it would go considering the plush top, but it just offered contouring, rather than deep, hugging sinkage that traps your movement.”
While this bed is one of my personal favorites, mostly because of its cloud-like, weightless feeling, I want to note that it may be too expensive for some shoppers. As Helix’s most luxurious mattress, it’s also priced the highest. Additionally, Helix advertises this 15-inch tall bed as “the tallest mattress on the market.” If you have mobility issues, it may be harder to climb into bed at the end of the day.
Our updated review of the Helix Midnight Elite mattress is coming soon. For a cheaper model, check out the standard version of the Helix Midnight mattress.

Budget Shoppers
This affordable mattress is a great pick for those looking to save.
The Nectar is that rare foam mattress that’s supportive enough for stomach sleepers, and should keep their hips aligned with their shoulders.
Pros of the Nectar
The Nectar offers a balanced feel, with contouring and support in equal measure.
Back sleepers should feel supported, but pleasantly cushioned on the Nectar.
Couples shouldn’t be too disturbed by movement, as the Nectar isolates motion well.
Cons of the Nectar
The Nectar isn’t supportive enough to be one of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers, which accommodate folks weighing 230 pounds or more. While heavy side sleepers might be comfortable, heavy back sleepers with chronic pain will need something softer and heavy stomach sleepers will probably need something firmer.

The Nectar delivers a balance of comfort and support: it’s definitely contouring, but still provides a firm enough foundation for most light to average weight sleepers, especially if they sleep on their back or stomach. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.
What our tester says:
“I think back sleepers are going to love the Nectar Classic. These sleepers will get plenty of support from the firm memory foam in the Nectar Classic, which should translate to great pressure relief and a good night’s sleep. Similarly, lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers should find that they get enough support around their hips to sleep comfortably on this mattress. The Nectar Classic is firm enough to keep these sleepers’ spines in a healthy position.” – Kenny Timper, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
While fibromyalgia can affect the entire body, some experience more back pain than others. To help alleviate pain in this region and sleep soundly, I recommend the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress. With an all-foam construction, this bed provides the perfect mix of contouring at the lumbar region with sturdy lift at the hips to support the spine. In addition to a 4-star pressure relief score, this mattress earned 4 stars for back pain from our Chief Medical Product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco.
When it comes to finding a mattress for back pain, our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, says, “Proper support in a mattress can help keep the spine neutrally aligned, reducing muscle strain. It also distributes your body weight evenly, relieving pressure points that can cause discomfort.” We consider a score of 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale to mark a true medium-firm mattress, which is exactly what our testers rated the Nectar.
While the proper firmness is a step in the right direction, we invited Dr. Tedesco into our studio to evaluate the Nectar specifically for sleepers with back pain. He said, “This can be great for anyone who really needs structural support and proper alignment to feel comfortable.”
Pressure map results for the Nectar Classic mattress.
In addition to back pain relief, the Nectar provides solid pressure relief at the sensitive hip and shoulder joints. When our testers lay on their sides and backs, they rated the Nectar an average of 4 stars for pressure relief in both positions.
On her side, our average-weight tester Sosha Lewis said, “My hips are elevated and in line with my shoulders, creating fantastic spinal alignment. I feel a tad bit of sinkage at my hips, which feels really nice.” She echoed the spinal alignment in the back-sleeping position, noting a nice balance between firm support and soft pressure relief.
While memory foam is great for relieving pressure, it’s been known to trap heat. However, we found the Nectar’s foam construction to be surprisingly breathable. While the cover isn’t cool to the touch, the bed did a great job of staying temperature neutral. We used a thermal gun to measure the bed’s temperature before and after someone had lain on it for five minutes. The Nectar heated up by less than 6 degrees. This indicates that the foams weren’t trapping our tester’s body heat, earning the mattress 4.5 stars overall for cooling.
If you have fibromyalgia, you may experience sleep disturbances when you roll over. Although foam mattresses like this one can often make sleepers feel “stuck” in their layers when switching between sleeping positions, our testers didn’t have to exert too much effort to move around due to the Nectar’s 4-star responsiveness score.
Keep in mind that, as an all-foam mattress, the Nectar doesn’t have a lot of bounce to it. If you have mobility issues, you may need a bit of springiness to assist you when switching between sleeping positions. Additionally, lightweight side sleepers with fibromyalgia likely won’t sink in enough to experience proper pressure relief and may need a softer mattress.

The DreamCloud Premier’s construction is a thoughtful, luxurious take on the company’s flagship mattress. It uses a hybrid of foam and coils to achieve a softer feel that’s still supportive. We think many side sleepers and combination sleepers alike should appreciate this mattress. Learn more in our DreamCloud Premier video review.
What our tester says:
“The latest Premier is considerably softer and plusher than the previous iteration of this bed, which had a firmer feel. While the former version was more suited for back sleepers, the latest one favors side sleepers. I consider both versions to be luxury mattresses that are sold at an affordable, off-brand price.” – Sosha Lewis, senior staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Side sleepers with fibromyalgia typically need a soft to medium-soft mattress that offers plenty of plush cushioning at the hips and shoulders. In this position, these joints are supporting the majority of the sleeper’s weight, so proper contouring is important to relieve pressure, as well as fibromyalgia-related pain.
I chose the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid as the best choice for these sleepers because it earned 4.5 stars for pressure relief when side sleeping, as well as solid 4-star ratings in cooling and responsiveness, which contribute to better rest overall.
I helped evaluate this mattress for pressure relief, and I immediately pegged it as a great choice for side sleepers. I typically experience some stiffness in my hips and shoulders if I lie on my side for too long, but I felt completely pain-free.
My co-tester Sosha Lewis also appreciated the mattress in this position, saying, “I’m feeling lots of contouring at my shoulder, and I especially like how it feels at my rib cage. My hips are sinking in a bit, yet my spine is still aligned.” We gave the Premier Hybrid an average of 4.5 stars for pressure relief when side sleeping, so it should help ease muscle tensions for those with fibromyalgia.
Pressure map results for the DreamCloud Premier.
Whether you’re a strict side sleeper or a combination sleeper, I think you’ll fare well on the DreamCloud Premier. While its top layers are softer, its coil layer offers a good level of bounce, which aids the transitions between sleeping positions. While mobility would be slightly better without the quilted layer, we still rated it 4 stars for responsiveness.
While these soft layers felt amazing around my joints, I was worried that two layers of foam and a quilted cover would lead to overheating. During the cooling testing, Sosha noted that the bed felt more temperature-neutral than cool. The bed’s temperature increased by 8.5 degrees after she lay on it for five minutes, which earned the bed 4 stars for cooling.
While the softness of this mattress makes it great for side sleepers, it’s a bit too soft for those who switch between their side and stomach. In the prone position, there’s too much sinkage at the hips to maintain a straight, neutral spine. Additionally, I don’t recommend this mattress to heavy sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, as they’ll likely find too much softness and not enough support.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
What our tester says:
“The Saatva Classic’s springy surface is perfect for combination sleepers looking for ease of movement as they toss and turn throughout the night. Also, back sleepers are perhaps best suited to the bed’s lifted support and balanced cushioning from the pillow top.” – Livvi DiCicco, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Proper spinal support is a top priority for back sleepers. When it comes to sturdy support, the Saatva Classic knocks it out of the park, featuring not one, but two layers of steel coils. While you can choose between three firmness options — Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm —, the coil-on-coil design makes them all supportive enough for back sleepers. Our team of certified sleep science coaches, as well as our Chief Medical Product Tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, tested the Luxury Firm level in our studio and awarded it an average of 4 stars for back sleeping.
Our team of experts tested the Luxury Firm model in our studio. It rated it a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it firmer than recommended for those with fibromyalgia. While this model doesn’t provide quite as much cushioning and sinkage as the Plush one, its coil-on-coil construction makes for excellent spinal alignment in the back sleeping position. Our testers rated the mattress 4 stars for pressure relief in this position, with our average-weight tester, Erin Chiles, calling out relief in her lower back.
A pressure map of the Saatva mattress.
Our Chief Medical Product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, also helped evaluate this mattress from a physical therapist’s point of view and rated the Luxury Firm model 4 stars for back sleepers. He said, “I feel pretty weightless on this mattress, orthopedically speaking. My spine is in a neutral position.” While most back sleepers will feel comfortable on the Luxury Firm model, as Dr. Tedesco did, those with fibromyalgia symptoms may want to opt for the Plush Soft model instead.
In addition to providing solid support, the dual coil layers allow for plenty of space inside the mattress for airflow. This, combined with a breathable organic cotton cover, helped the bed maintain a neutral temperature throughout our cooling tests. Our thermal gun showed it only heated up by 7.4 degrees after our tester, Kenny Timper, lay on it for five minutes. He ended up rating the cooling 4 stars, saying, “I didn’t feel like the bed was noticeably warming up beneath me.”
In addition to providing breathability, the double coils also make this bed incredibly bouncy and responsive. The mattress practically springs you from one sleeping position to the next, so you won’t have to exert any effort to move around. Although it has a plush euro top layer that allowed Kenny to sink into it somewhat, he had no trouble switching sleep positions, so he rated it 5 stars for responsiveness.
As a luxury innerspring mattress, the Saatva is pricier than average, costing $2,139 for a queen size at full retail. So, it may be a bit too expensive for shoppers on a budget. Additionally, people who sleep with a partner should keep in mind this bed’s low score in motion isolation — only 2.7 stars — so there’s a chance your partner’s movement may disturb your sleep.

The Leesa Natural mattress should feel medium firm to most sleepers, offering them a balanced feel. We think side sleepers and back sleepers will be most comfortable on this sturdy hybrid mattress due to the combination of plush cushioning and firm support.
What our tester says:
“I really like this mattress in the side-sleeping position. While I’m more ‘on’ the bed than ‘in’ the bed, there’s still a nice amount of cushioning from the mini pillow top that’s relieving pressure at my hips and shoulders. My spine feels perfectly aligned in this position, and I feel like I could sleep all night without feeling pain” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
For some sleepers, sustainable and organic materials are a top priority. Since we spend a significant amount of time in bed, it’s understandable to want a bed with materials that meet the highest standards. One hypoallergenic material is natural latex, which Dr. Dasgupta says is one of the best materials for pressure relief. While it’s a bit firmer than memory foam, it has natural cooling qualities and provides lots of bounce, earning 5 stars for responsiveness. When considering organic mattresses for people with fibromyalgia, I chose the medium-firm Leesa Natural.
With an average score of 4.8 stars for pressure relief, it helps alleviate tension throughout the entire body, regardless of your sleeping position. Additionally, I’m impressed with this bed’s 5-star responsiveness score, as well as the overall quality of its materials.
The Leesa Natural is packed with premium organic materials, including organic cotton, GOTS-certified New Zealand wool, GOLS-certified natural latex, and recycled steel. The mattress has also obtained a GREENGUARD Gold certification, meaning it is free from harmful chemicals and meets strict safety standards. You can learn more about these certifications and more in our guide to mattress and bedding certifications.
Our testers rated this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, marking it as having a true medium-firm feel. It’s very plush and provides tons of cushioning along the body, which those with fibromyalgia can appreciate, yet the coils provide firmer support to lift the sleeper up and out of the bed.
I tested the pressure relief capabilities of this mattress with my colleague, Sosha Lewis, and we agreed that it’s a great choice for side and back sleepers alike. On her side, Sosha said, “The foam contours around my hips, shoulders, and rips, while the coils keep me elevated.”.
Although I felt more “on” the bed than “in” it, there was still enough cushioning to relieve pressure on my joints when I slept on my side. We also both felt great spinal alignment when lying on our backs; the top layers did a great job cushioning our upper backs and providing a touch of softness across our bodies. Overall, we gave this bed an average pressure relief rating of 5 stars for side sleeping and 4.5 stars for back sleeping.
In addition to providing excellent pressure relief, latex is naturally hypoallergenic and breathable, which was proven during our thermal gun test, where the bed earned 4 stars overall for cooling. This material also has a natural buoyant quality, which helped earn the Leesa Natural 5 stars for responsiveness. When I switched between different sleeping positions, I felt like the bouncy latex and coils were springing me from one position to the next, so you should be able to toss and turn without waking up.
Thermal imaging of the Leesa Natural mattress.
While people with mobility issues can appreciate how easy it is to move around on the Leesa Natural, they may need a mattress with a stronger perimeter. The Leesa Natural only earned 3.2 stars for its edge support, so you may not be able to bear down on the side of the bed for support when getting in and out. Additionally, heavy sleepers may need a bed that offers more support to prevent bottoming out.

The WinkBed Plus is a medium-firm, hybrid mattress designed specifically to accommodate sleepers with larger body types. Through our testing, we found it works best for back sleepers, particularly those over 230 pounds. It also does a good job of isolating motion, which will likely appeal to you if you sleep with a partner. If you want to learn more about the WinkBed Plus, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“This mattress was designed with plus-size sleepers. However, I think the Plus in its name could also be a nod to all that this mattress has going for it. By using testers with different weights and body types, we learned that this mattress can also be a solid choice for many lightweight and average-weight sleepers.” – Sosha Lewis, senior staff writer and certified sleep science coach
If you weigh more than 230 pounds and have fibromyalgia, it’s important to find a mattress that relieves pressure along the whole body, while remaining ultra-supportive. I chose the WinkBed Plus for these sleepers not only because it was specifically designed to support larger body types, but also because it earned an impressive 4.7-star rating for pressure relief in both the back and side sleeping positions.
When our testers evaluated the WinkBed Plus, they found it provided a classic medium-firm feel, rating it 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Many mattresses marketed for heavy sleepers are firmer than average to provide ultimate support. However, those with fibromyalgia will need a touch of softness to help relieve pressure across the body, and the WinkBed’s plush pillow top does a great job providing this.
While this bed is ideal for heavy sleepers, it’s also a suitable match for those with fibromyalgia, regardless of their body type or preferred sleeping position. We asked three expert testers of different weight classes to lie on the WinkBed Plus in the back- and side-sleeping positions and observe where on their body they felt cushioned and where they felt pressure building.
Every tester felt comfortable in both sleeping positions, awarding the bed an average of 4.7 stars for pressure relief. However, our larger body tester, Caine Wilkes, experienced the most relief. In both sleeping positions, Caine rated the WinkBed Plus 5 stars for pressure relief. On his back, he said, “It’s like I’m lying on a cloud right now. I feel cushioned and supported throughout my whole body, and my spine feels very aligned.”
A pressure map of the WinkBed Plus mattress.
In addition to the excellent support and pressure relief, heavy sleepers can also appreciate the bed’s excellent temperature regulation, which earned 5 stars on our thermal gun test. Our tester, Kenny Timper, didn’t find it cool to the touch, maintaining a consistent, neutral temperature throughout the whole test. After he lay on the WinkBed Plus for five minutes, its temperature only increased by 3.4 degrees, which is outstanding. He said, “I felt comfortable the entire time I was lying down, and it clearly does a good job at maintaining a steady temperature and not heating up.”
One final standout feature I have to call out is the WinkBed’s excellent responsiveness. Although it has a plush pillow top, which can sometimes make it difficult to switch between sleeping positions smoothly, the bouncy coils helped the bed earn 5 stars overall in this category. If you’re tossing and turning at night, you’re unlikely to wake up from exerting effort.
While there’s a lot to love about the WinkBed Plus, I want to highlight its edge support. While this bed offers strong support in the center, I think some heavy sleepers may want a sturdier perimeter to fully spread out, especially couples who want to securely spread out.

What our tester says:
“I got a nice lift for my upper body from the bed’s springs while the foam and soft pillow top filled in my lumbar region. This makes the mattress a great choice for back sleepers. Also, I don’t think you’re likely to feel your partner tossing and turning unless you’re an especially light sleeper.” – Dan Caffrey, managing editor and certified sleep science coach
Arthritis is a condition characterized by swelling, joint tenderness, and inflammation. Fibromyalgia is a type of arthritis. When managing this condition, it’s essential to prioritize cushioning to help alleviate tension, as well as strong support to prevent the spine from bending, thereby reducing pain.
For sleepers with joint arthritis, I recommend the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress, which Dr. Tedesco rated 4.5 stars for helping this condition. In addition, our testers found excellent 4.5-star cooling abilities and were impressed by the bed’s overall value and price point.
Like most mattresses on this list, the Silk & Snow features a classic medium-firm feel, rated 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Certified sleep science coach Sosha Lewis thought the quilted cover and thick memory foam layer did a great job relieving pressure along her back and filling in the space at her lumbar region. She said, “My mid-section feels elevated, and my spine is aligned even with all the cushioning.”
Dr. Tedesco also asserted that this hybrid bed was best suited for people with arthritis in the back-sleeping position. He specifically mentioned people with an anterior pelvic tilt, characterized by a person standing with an arched back. “This mattress will help tilt your pelvis posteriorly, which will provide a ton of relief.
People with fibromyalgia and arthritis can also appreciate this bed’s 4.5-star cooling score, which indicates an ability to dissipate heat and regulate the sleeper’s temperature. After a tester lay on the bed for five minutes, its temperature had only increased by 4 degrees. If temperature changes worsen your pain, this bed should help you remain neutral.
Testing pain relief with our pressure relief map
I also want to highlight the Silk & Snow’s price. It can be hard to find a quality mattress for under $1,000, but this bed is super affordable.
While Dr. Tedesco praised this bed for alleviating arthritic pain when used for back sleeping, he was less confident about its ability to relieve pressure at the shoulders and hips in the side-sleeping position. While our lightweight and average-weight testers felt minimal pressure building when lying on their sides, both rating the bed 4 stars, our heavyweight tester, Caine Wilkes, sank in a bit too far, which misaligned his spine. Therefore, he rated the pressure relief in this position 3 stars. If you’re a heavy sleeper or have arthritis, I wouldn’t recommend side sleeping on the Silk & Snow.
For more information, check out our full Silk & Snow mattress review. For more support for heavy sleepers with arthritis, Dr. Tedesco recommends the Titan Plus.

Customer Experience
A combination of the warranty, trial period, and overall experience when unboxing this mattress.
The Glacier Original Hybrid is a true middle-of-the-road mattress, and we mean that as a compliment. Its balanced feel makes it comfortable for average-weight sleepers in all three sleeping positions, all while remaining cooling, supportive, and responsive.
What our tester says:
“During my testing, I was especially impressed by its responsive, medium-firm feel, which made it easy to move around and shift positions — an essential trait for restless or combination sleepers. Its cooling technology was another standout feature, offering exceptional temperature regulation from the moment I lay down.” – Kenny Timper, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Some sleepers with fibromyalgia have sensitivity to temperature, often experiencing increased pain when the weather drastically changes. If your fibromyalgia causes discomfort if you get too warm, or you simply run hot at night, I recommend seeking a mattress designed to remain cool. The Glacier Original Hybrid mattress is a great choice for these sleepers, not only because it earned 4.5 stars on our cooling test, but also because it earned an average of 4.6 stars overall for pressure relief and has outstanding 5-star responsiveness.
Although several mattresses remain temperature-neutral, I’m recommending the Glacier specifically for those who sleep hot, as I know all too well how annoying night sweats can be. I was initially impressed by its silky, cool-to-the-touch feel. It remained cool the entire time I was lying on it, and our thermal gun indicated that the bed’s temperature only increased by 5.5 degrees. This indicates great cooling abilities, earning the bed 4.5 stars for this category.

A true medium-firm feel makes the Glacier a great choice for both back and side sleepers with fibromyalgia. On my back, I really enjoyed how the top comfort layers filled in the space at my lower back while keeping my hips aligned with my shoulders. My co-tester, Kenny Timper, agreed, and we both rated the bed 5 stars for pressure relief in this position.
When I switched onto my side, I felt a decent amount of cushioning around my hip and shoulder joints, as well as fantastic spinal alignment. While Kenny agreed with me for the most part, he’s familiar with hip pain and thinks side sleepers with sensitive hips may need a bit more contouring. Overall, we gave the bed an average side-sleeping pressure relief score of 4.3 stars.
In addition to excellent cooling and great pressure relief, those with fibromyalgia will appreciate the ease of movement they experience on the Glacier. Due to its layer of pocketed coils, Kenny found it easy to move around on this bed. Although it has a quilted cover, it didn’t make him feel trapped or prevent him from rolling over, so he rated the responsiveness 5 stars.
Before you purchase this mattress, keep in mind that it’s designed to keep sleepers cool. If you think a cooling mattress will worsen your fibromyalgia pain, you may want to consider a more temperature-neutral bed. Additionally, this bed only earned 3.8 stars when we tested its edge support, so you may not be able to rely on the side of the bed for support when getting in and out.
There are many online mattresses that provide the proper firmness and contouring for people with fibromyalgia. As we wrap up this review, I’d like to leave you with two bonus beds I chose: The
I included the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid mattress as my top choice for side sleepers with fibromyalgia due to its soft, yet supportive, feel, which provides ample contouring at the hips and shoulders. DreamCloud also offers this bed in an all foam model. While the Premier Memory Foam mattress earned impressive scores on our pressure relief test — 4 stars for side sleeping and 4.5 stars for back sleeping — I chose to highlight the hybrid model in this roundup because I found it slightly more supportive due to the layer of coils.
I chose the Helix Midnight Elite as the best overall mattress for individuals with fibromyalgia, but this mattress is also available in standard and Luxe variations. If the Elite is too pricey, I think the standard Helix Midnight is a great choice. Like the Elite, this bed has a true medium-firm feel and a hybrid construction. Although it didn’t earn a perfect 5-star score for pressure relief like the Elite model did, the Helix Midnight held its own in this category, earning an average of 4.3 stars in each position. This bed also doesn’t come with a pillow top or microcoil layer like the Elite does, so it doesn’t provide quite the same weightless sensation.
How We Picked and Tested These Mattresses
When choosing the best mattresses for people with fibromyalgia, I did extensive research to learn what sleepers need to prioritize for this condition. Below, I’ll outline the categories that I paid special attention to when rounding up my top 8 beds.
Pressure Relief
When searching for deep and consistent pressure relief, it’s crucial to focus on the materials at play. According to Dr. Dasgupta, memory foam and latex mattresses are the two best materials for relieving pressure along the body, allowing people with fibromyalgia to find significant relief through snug contouring and comfortable sinkage. Since fibromyalgia can affect the entire body, I looked for mattresses with a pressure relief score of 4 or higher in both the back and side sleeping positions.
Our testers using a high-tech mat to render pressure maps.
We evaluate pressure relief in mattresses by having several Sleepopolis testers lie down in the back and side-sleeping positions. As they lie there, they pay attention to where on their body they feel cushioned and contoured, and where they’re experiencing a buildup of pressure. We also invited Dr. Tedesco to lie on these beds and assess them from a pain-relief perspective. He discussed several common pain issues with us, such as sciatica, arthritis, and scoliosis, and how a mattress may or may not contribute to pain relief.
Spinal Alignment
People with fibromyalgia typically find the best sleep on mattresses that are soft to medium-firm. However, a strong support system is crucial for keeping the spine straight and preventing back pain from occurring. When a mattress provides excellent support, it’s able to lift the hips in line with the shoulders, thus preventing the spine from bending unnaturally. Propping the spine into neutral alignment can help alleviate tensions along the back and soothe joint pain.
When choosing mattresses, I looked for sturdy support systems, such as individually wrapped coils or high-density foam base layers. Some of the beds I chose even have two layers of coils, or an additional layer of microcoils to provide ultimate support.
Cooling
If you have trouble falling asleep due to pain from fibromyalgia, you will want to be sure nothing else stands in your way of a good night’s sleep. Temperature sensitivity can be common in people with fibromyalgia, who may experience aggravated symptoms if they’re too hot or too cold. When choosing beds for this round-up, I looked for stellar temperature regulation to prevent overheating and help the sleeper feel temperature neutral
We use a thermal gun to measure the temperature of each mattress before and after a tester lies on it for five minutes. We consider a temperature increase of less than 5 degrees to indicate excellent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees to indicate good cooling, 10 to 15 degrees decent cooling, and more than 15 degrees poor cooling. To help those with fibromyalgia remain temperature-neutral throughout the night, I chose mattresses that earned 4 stars or higher in this category.

Responsiveness
When experiencing fibromyalgia, you may find it more difficult to move around on your mattress due to pain. If the bed contains slow-moving foam, there’s a chance that it can create a “quick-sand effect,” causing you to feel stuck when attempting to roll over. To combat this, I looked for highly responsive mattresses. We test responsiveness in our studio using four distinct tests: one that collects qualitative data and three that collect quantitative data.
We tested responsiveness by performing what we call a “switch test.” This involves an expert testing switching between multiple sleeping positions and observing the effort required. Typically, latex and hybrid mattresses are the most responsive, as they offer a bit of bounce to assist with the transition between sleeping positions.
Our testers performing response tests on mattresses.
We also quantify the responsiveness of a mattress by placing a 53-pound kettlebell directly on the center of the bed and allowing it to sink in for seven seconds. Then, we pull the weight straight up and use a stopwatch to measure how many seconds it took for the bed to return to its original shape.
Then, we place the weight back on the bed and use a ruler to measure how many inches it sank in. We classify sinkage in three categories: deep, moderate, and light. For people with fibromyalgia, we recommend moderate to deep sinkage to ensure they experience enough body contouring.
Sinkage and bounce testing at the Sleepopolis studio.
Finally, we test the buoyancy of a mattress by climbing six feet above it and dropping a 20-pound medicine ball onto the center. A yardstick on the wall allows us to measure exactly how high the ball rebounded into the air. We rate bounce as either high, moderate, or low.
What to Consider in a Mattress for Fibromyalgia
In addition to the factors I outlined above, there are a few additional things to keep in mind when choosing a new mattress. Let’s quickly cover some important considerations that may impact your buying decision.
Mattress Type
The materials of your mattress can affect how comfortable it is, as well as how it feels when you sleep on it. Further, it can affect the ability of the mattress to alleviate pain if you are sleeping with fibromyalgia. Whatever your sleep preferences may be, considering what your mattress is made of is important to helping you get the best sleep. You can read more about each material below, and see how we think it will work out for sleepers with arthritis.
An all-foam mattress with a slow-moving, hug-like feel. It can be known for heating quickly, but cooling infusions such as gel, copper, and graphite can help dissipate heat
Yes (especially those with a high-density foundation)
A combination of coils and foam that provides a balance of comfort and support. This is a great choice for people who want something cooling, contouring, and supportive.
Yes (especially those with multiple foam comfort layers)
A natural mattress option that’s responsive and cooling. These can be a good choice for people who want an organic mattress that can still offer pressure relief.
A mattress with a thin comfort layer and a thick coil foundation. These mattresses are usually bouncy and very cooling, but can be firm and not offer good pressure relief.
No (usually too firm)
Sleeping Position
How you sleep will determine the ideal mattress firmness and the areas that require pressure relief. Considering your primary sleeping position is an important place to start when looking for the right mattress, especially if you already experience pain as a result of your fibromyalgia. To test these mattresses, we lay on them in each sleeping position to see how supportive and pressure-relieving they are.
Sleepopolis team testing mattresses in every sleeping position.
Below, you can find out what mattress firmness is best for your sleeping position and which areas require pressure relief.
Proper spinal alignment and pressure relief in multiple sleeping positions
Body Type
Firmness can be subjective, as it depends on how much you weigh. For lightweight sleepers, who weigh less than 13 pounds, a mattress may feel firmer than average. In contrast, heavy sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds typically perceive beds as softer than average because they sink further into the layers. We recommend considering your body weight when looking into the right bed for you. Your body type can also affect the type of joint pain you might have, so it can be especially important to consider if you have fibromyalgia.
When we test mattresses, we typically invite testers of multiple body types into our studio to evaluate pressure relief and support. Testing using diverse body types allows us to gain a better understanding of how beds perform for different sleepers, which allows us to make recommendations based on weight and sleeping position.
Company Policies
Company policies, such as mattress warranties and sleep trial periods, are important for any mattress. However, they’re extra important for those who experience fibromyalgia pain. Customers with fibromyalgia need time to determine whether or not a mattress is going to help alleviate their pain and improve their sleep.
Shipping and Set-up: Shipping can be an additional cost to your purchase; however, every mattress on this roundup comes with free shipping. Some companies, like Saatva, will even deliver and set up your mattress, as well as dispose of your old one.
Mattress Sleep Trials: Sleep trial lengths vary from company to company. These trials are periods during which you can test a mattress to ensure it meets your needs and preferences. If you decide to return the mattress before the sleep trial ends, you will be eligible for a refund. We recommend sleep trials that are at least 100 nights long, with 365 days being ideal.
Mattress Warranties: Like every sleep trial, every warranty is different. Warranties signify a company’s agreement to repair or replace products that are sold broken or damaged. Some warranties cover specific defects, while others don’t; these are referred to as limited warranties. Look for a mattress with at least a 10-year warranty. Often, warranty lengths show a company’s confidence in its product.
Returns: Being able to return your mattress may be important if you want to ensure it meets your needs. If you have fibromyalgia, you may also want to look into the company’s policies of helping you make a return, as moving the mattress by yourself may not be an option.
What Is Fibromyalgia?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fibromyalgia is a condition that causes people to feel pain in the muscles and soft tissues all over their body. People with fibromyalgia also have many places on their bodies that hurt a lot when they are touched.
What Are Common Fibromyalgia Symptoms?
This widespread pain can cause numerous issues, with common signs of fibromyalgia including daytime fatigue, emotional distress, and severe sleep problems.
Fibromyalgia Treatment
There are medicines and strategies to help with the symptoms of fibromyalgia. But there is no single treatment that works for everyone. You and your healthcare team will need to work together to find the right mix of treatments for you. In general, treatment can include:
Medicines to relieve pain and improve mood
Physical therapy to learn exercises and stretches
Relaxation therapy
It is also important that you stay active. Walking, swimming, or biking can all help ease muscle pain. If you have not been active, it might hurt a little more when you start. However, being active can help improve your symptoms. While it’s always a good idea to develop a care plan with a medical professional, there are actions you can take at home to ease fibromyalgia symptoms.
One of the best things you can do is work on how you sleep. This looks different for everyone but could include establishing a consistent bedtime routine and re-evaluating your approach to sleep hygiene, which includes a comfortable sleep environment. We’ll be focusing on some of our favorite mattresses for fibromyalgia.
Tips for Sleeping with Fibromyalgia
While the right mattress cannot cure your fibromyalgia, nor can it stop the pain you may experience as a result of it, it can help alleviate some of the pain and discomfort you might feel while sleeping. There are also some other things you can do to help you get more comfortable while sleeping with fibromyalgia.
Use the right pillow: Using the right pillow can help to promote healthy spinal alignment and alleviate some discomfort you feel while sleeping. You might consider putting a pillow under your back when back sleeping or between your knees when side sleeping to help alleviate pressure.
Over-the-counter pain medications: We recommend consulting your doctor before taking any pain medication, but over-the-counter ibuprofen or similar pain relief medications may help you get more comfortable.
Stretching before bed: Stretching may help reduce some of the muscle discomfort and pain you experience as a result of fibromyalgia. It may also help reduce muscle tightness.
Set a bedtime routine: Sticking to a consistent bedtime routine can help your body get better sleep overall. This can include limiting blue light, going to bed and waking up at the same time, and creating a comfortable sleeping environment.
Limit alcohol: Limiting alcohol can help you sleep better overall, and may also reduce symptoms of alcohol consumption, like dehydration, which can lead to discomfort.
Use a mattress topper: Using a mattress topper that provides contouring and pressure relief can help alleviate some of the pain and discomfort you may experience when sleeping with fibromyalgia. You can check out our top picks for the best memory foam mattress toppers to learn more.
