Best Pillow-Top Mattress (2025): Expert-Tested for Quality

If you’re looking for a luxurious, hotel-like sleeping experience right at home, a pillow-top mattress may be just what the doctor ordered. These mattresses have a thick layer of foam or fiber stitched on top for additional comfort. The best mattresses in this category are known for their extra-plush feel and are great at isolating motion and relieving pressure and pain as you sleep. If you’re looking for a bed to tick those boxes, keep reading to see our picks for the best pillow-top mattresses.

Our team of mattress experts, Zzz enthusiasts, and certified sleep science coaches have spent over a decade thoroughly testing over 300 beds to help readers just like you find the perfect mattress for them. Our methodology of every mattress that comes through our lab includes 13 in-depth tests, including these three that are the most important for pillow-top mattresses:

  • Cooling: Pillow-top mattresses are designed to elevate your comfort and coziness by adding an extra layer of cushioning, but many of them tend to trap heat. To help you keep cool, we’ve included models that incorporate cooling materials like breathable fabrics, gel-infused foams, and moisture-wicking covers.
  • Edge Support: Edge support is the mattress’s ability to maintain its shape along the perimeter, preventing it from sinking or sagging when pressure is applied. This is particularly important for sleepers who tend to sit or sleep near the edge of the bed and folks with mobility issues who need to bear down onto the mattress to stand up. With better edge support, a mattress is less likely to develop premature wear and tear, giving you a longer-lasting investment.
  • Pressure Relief: The plush top layer on pillow-top mattresses gently conforms to the body’s curves to relieve pressure around sensitive areas and prevent joint pain. We’ve selected beds that strike the right balance between softness and support, helping to alleviate pressure points without sacrificing spinal alignment.

While creating this best pillow-top mattress guide, we teamed up with Dr. Raj Dasgupta, who is board-certified in sleep medicine, to evaluate what to look for, and Stephanie Wright, RN, BSN, to review all of the content from a medical perspective.

Best Pillow-Top Mattresses of 2025

What I Looked For in the Best Pillow-Top Mattresses

Over the years, my team and I have tested many pillow top beds and emphasized cooling, motion isolation, and pressure relief. However, I also look into other factors to help all sleepers find the perfect mattress for them and their budget.

  • Support: Pillow-top mattresses should provide a solid base layer of support for proper spinal alignment. I prioritized models that offer both the softness of the pillow top and the structural support needed for comfort throughout the night.
  • Price: Pillow-top mattresses are synonymous with luxury, which often means they’re pricey. When reviewing mattresses, I consider how much bang buyers are getting for their buck to make recommendations across different budgets. The mattresses on this list range from $1,332 to $2,634 for a queen size.
  • Materials: A luxurious, high-quality pillow-top mattress should be made with long-lasting materials. I focused on beds with durable foam, coils, or hybrid constructions that maintain their shape and provide long-lasting comfort.

Helix has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. The Midnight is one of their medium models. It has enough contouring for side sleepers, but should still be supportive enough for back sleepers, as long as they don’t mind a softer bed. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I like the Helix Midnight Luxe for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-soft to medium-firm feel should give these folks the right balance of comfort and support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

The Helix Midnight is a standout mattress for anyone seeking a balanced mix of pressure relief, support, and mobility. In fact, it scored a 4 out of 5 or higher in key categories including materials, edge support, cooling, responsiveness, pressure relief, value, and support, bolstering its position as our top pick.

After testing the Helix Midnight Luxe thoroughly, I rated it a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, placing it right in the medium-firm category. This firmness level is perfect for those who prefer a mattress that offers a bit of give without being too soft or too firm.

When lying on my back, I felt the Midnight Luxe provided excellent zoned support. My hips stayed well-aligned with my shoulders, which is crucial for maintaining proper spinal alignment. Even with its plush top, the mattress doesn’t sacrifice support, thanks to its individually wrapped coils and dense base layer. This made it comfortable for me across different sleeping positions, earning it a solid 4 out of 5 for overall support and edge support.

My fellow mattress tester, Nichole Mondshein, had a similar take. “I found that the Midnight Luxe’s thick memory foam comfort layer offers plenty of pressure relief and body contouring,” she noted, “while its zoned coil layer ensures you’re getting plenty of lumbar support.”

Nichole back sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe.

One of the hallmarks of a fantastic pillow-top mattress is pressure relief, since the extra cushioning stitched on top of the mattress eases the joints and contours the body. To test this, I used a pressure mapping mat that tracks areas of high, moderate, and low pressure. When I lay on my back, the map showed mostly blue, with a bit of green — indicating minimal pressure buildup.

On my side, I did notice a touch of yellow at the shoulder and hip, but this is typical for side sleepers and wasn’t uncomfortable. The rest of the pressure map showed green and blue, making it a solid choice for both back and side sleepers. I gave it a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 for pressure relief.

As for responsiveness, the Helix Midnight Luxe didn’t disappoint. Its innerspring coils provide a nice amount of bounce for combination sleepers. It was easy to roll around and change positions during testing, earning it a 4.5 out of 5 in this category. I think this bed is a great option for folks who change positions frequently at night.

RELATED: Best Mattresses for Combination Sleepers

In fact, there weren’t many weaknesses to note about the Helix Midnight Luxe, as it scored 4 or higher in most categories during testing. My only criticism is that Helix offers a shorter sleep trial than I would like to see, with just 100 nights. As a result, we rated it 3.5 in the trial period category.

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

If you’ve ever experienced the common issue of overheating with plush mattresses, you’ll appreciate the WinkBed’s ability to disperse body heat. The WinkBed is designed with temperature-regulating features throughout and offers cushioning pressure relief with minimal heat buildup, earning it a 4.5 out of 5 in the cooling category (and a spot in our best cooling mattresses roundup).

After testing this mattress for myself, I couldn’t help but notice its next-level cooling abilities. If you’re a hot sleeper like me, the WinkBed should be a home run. The mattress cover is made from Tencel, a natural material known for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties. Meanwhile, the top layer of foam is infused with cooling gel. Below that, a pocketed coil core helps with airflow.

I also noticed strong lumbar support and some nice cushioning, which helped keep my spine aligned. The combination of supportive coils and a plush pillow top layer makes the WinkBed comfortable for numerous sleeping positions. I rated it a solid 4.5 out of 5 for overall support.

My fellow mattress tester, Nichole Mondshein, agreed with my assessment. “I found the WinkBed to be a comfortable and highly supportive mattress,” she said. “Lying on the bed, I felt the uplift from the sturdy base, but still felt the plush cushioning of the pillow top layer above.”

Speaking of pressure relief, the WinkBed also impressed us with its ability to comfortably relieve tension. To test this, I used a pressure-mapping mat. When I lay on my back, the map was nearly all blue, indicating little to no pressure buildup in this position. On my side, I saw more green and yellow, especially around my hips and shoulders.

Our pressure map showing a graphic that's nearly all blue, indicating little to no pressure buildup in the back-sleeping position. On my side, there's more green and yellow, especially around my hips and shoulders.
Pressure map results for the WinkBed.

Based on these results, I still think most side sleepers will fare well on this bed. However, I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to folks with sensitive joints or lightweight side sleepers (under 130 pounds). This is because the WinkBed scored a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it’s a little on the firmer side, so it will likely feel firmer to these individuals compared to average and heavier sleepers.

RELATED: Best Mattress for Heavy People

The WinkBed may also not be the best option for those on a tight budget. While it’s a high-quality mattress with lots to offer, its premium features come at a higher price point. That said, the WinkBed is often on sale, so it could still be a good value for those willing to invest in quality sleep.

The DreamCloud Premier’s construction is a thoughtful, luxurious take on the company’s flagship mattress. It uses a hybrid of foam and coils to achieve a firmer feel that’s still pressure-relieving. We think many back sleepers and stomach sleepers should appreciate this mattress. With such versatility and many special features, the Premier is well-equipped to cater to couples. What our tester says:

“From the cashmere cover to the Euro top, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this bed. I really like how this mattress combines sturdy support with cozy pressure relief — making it a great choice for back sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor

A great pillow-top mattress should help you sleep like you’re in a fancy hotel without paying for a vacation. The DreamCloud Premier does exactly that, making it my favorite pillow-top mattress for the money. Pillow-top beds are known for their high-end feel, but they often come with a high-end price tag. Thankfully, the DreamCloud Premier defies that trend by offering a luxurious pillow top bed at an accessible price point, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 for value in our evaluation.

RELATED: Best Luxury Mattress

Let’s start with the good stuff: I rated the DreamCloud Premier a perfect 5 out of 5 for overall support. As a stomach sleeper, I found that this mattress provided the ideal firmness to keep my hips elevated and aligned with my shoulders, which is essential for preventing lower back pain. Its combination of supportive coils and foam layers delivers a solid base, while the pillow top adds a layer of comfort, making it a good match for anyone needing firm support with a plush feel.

When it comes to pressure relief, the DreamCloud Premier did well for back sleepers, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category. The plush pillow top provides some nice body contouring, helping to alleviate pressure at key points. However, side sleepers might find they need a bit more cushioning at the shoulders and hips, especially if they’re sensitive to pressure points.

Another one of the standout features of the DreamCloud Premier is its materials. The mattress is topped with a Mongolian cashmere blend cover that’s both lightweight and moisture-wicking. Below that, the Trueloft Euro top layer is quilted with plush memory foam and soft support foam, offering excellent pressure relief and body contouring. The support layer consists of 8.5 inches of pocketed coils, providing a sturdy foundation while maintaining excellent airflow. I gave the DreamCloud Premier a 4.5 out of 5 for its high-quality materials.

A diagram of the layers is shown with a cut-open mattress to demonstrate the DreamCloud Premier’s construction.
A closer look at the DreamCloud Premier’s construction.

My fellow mattress tester, Logan Block, was equally impressed by the Premier’s premium materials: “This feels like a true luxury mattress.” he said. “From the cashmere cover to the Euro top, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this bed.”

However, the DreamCloud Premier isn’t perfect. While it sleeps relatively cool, it doesn’t include any specialized cooling materials, so extra hot sleepers may want to look for something built with cooling in mind. And as I mentioned earlier, the DreamCloud doesn’t offer enough cushioning for side sleepers, earning only a 2.5 out of 5 for pressure relief in this category. Strict side sleepers may prefer an all-foam mattress with a softer feel or more targeted cushioning to better ease pressure around the hips and shoulders.

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

If you’re a back sleeper who enjoys the plush feel of a luxurious pillow top, the Nolah Evolution has your, well, back. A pillow top can add comfort, but it’s essential for back sleepers to have the right amount of lift to keep their spines aligned. The Nolah Evolution strikes that balance, earning a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 for both support and pressure relief. This mattress offers back sleepers a perfect combination of plush comfort and proper spinal alignment for a restful night’s sleep.

RELATED: Best Mattresses for Back Pain

I rated the Nolah Evolution a 4.5 out of 5 for materials, and if you take a closer look at what’s inside, it’s easy to see why. The mattress features a plush pillow top paired with Nolah’s proprietary AirFoamICE, a more breathable memory foam alternative infused with special cooling fibers to help regulate temperature. Below that, a transition layer of high-resilience foam prevents you from sinking too deep into the mattress, which is essential for back sleepers who need proper spinal alignment.

Supporting the mattress further is a layer of Eco Support Coils, which add durability and responsiveness. These coils are individually wrapped in foam, creating a reinforced perimeter for superior edge support. I gave the Nolah Evolution a 4.5 out of 5 for edge support because it allows couples and combination sleepers to use the entire surface of the mattress without feeling like they’re going to roll off.

When it comes to pressure relief, the Nolah Evolution showed impressive results. me, earning another strong 4.5 out of 5. My pressure map showed low pressure across the surface, indicating that it does an excellent job of alleviating tension, especially in the lumbar region.

A pressure map graphic showing low pressure across the mattress tester's body, indicating that it does an excellent job of alleviating tension, especially in the lumbar region.
Pressure map results for the Nolah Evolution.

The combination of the plush pillow top and supportive foam layers means back sleepers can expect a soft yet supportive sleep experience that eases tension, particularly in the back.

One of my fellow mattress testers, Bridget Chapman, echoed my thoughts, saying, “One of my favorite features is the soft pillow top. It’s a great touch for anyone that suffers from shoulder or hip pain, as it allows you to sink into bed for a plusher feel.”

Side sleepers will also likely appreciate the added comfort and the way the mattress helps alleviate pressure points. However, if you sleep on your stomach, you may find that the Nolah Evolution is too soft to provide the necessary lift for your hips, which could lead to lower back pain over time. Stomach sleepers may want to look for a firmer mattress with more support.

The Bear Star Hybrid is a softer hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring coils. It offers pressure relief, contouring, and solid support for many sleeper types, but especially back, side, and combination sleepers. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy. I loved how plush the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt comfortable and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

The Bear Star Hybrid is my pillow-top pick for the best mattress for sex, thanks to its responsiveness and bounce. A mattress with mobility is key here, and the Bear Star Hybrid delivers. This mattress features a layer of individually encased coils that provide excellent bounce and make it easy to move around without feeling stuck, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 for responsiveness.

Another standout feature is its edge support. Thanks to the mattress’s reinforced perimeter coils, you and your partner can use the entire surface without feeling like you’re going to roll off. I rated it a 4.5 out of 5 for edge support, as the sturdy coils and reinforced edges make the bed feel expansive and secure, even near the edge. I was able to lay and sit on the edge of this mattress without ever feeling like I was going to fall off.

A Sleepopolis mattress tester shown back sleeping on the Bear Star Hybrid mattress.
Our mattress tester Bridget Chapman back sleeping on the Bear Star Hybrid.

My fellow mattress tester, Bridget Chapman, had a similar take: “In my opinion, the Bear Star Hybrid is a good pick for couples looking for both comfort and stability. The low motion transfer on this bed also makes it unlikely that either partner will be disturbed by the other’s movement throughout the night.”

In terms of feel, I think the Bear Star Hybrid leans toward the softer side. I gave it a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This softness comes from a thick layer of memory foam and its plush quilted pillow top. The result is a cozy, cushioning feel that conforms nicely to your body. However, despite its softness, the Bear Star Hybrid is still supportive. I think this bed is good for back sleepers who need just enough lift to maintain spinal alignment.

I also found that the Bear Star Hybrid offers excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. With plenty of contouring around the shoulders and hips, I experienced minimal pressure buildup, which earned the mattress a 4.5 out of 5 for pressure relief. This makes it a great option for side sleepers who need relief from tension in those areas.

Stomach sleepers, however, may find the Bear Star Hybrid a bit too soft. As a stomach sleeper myself, I found my hips sinking too far into the bed’s plush pillow top, causing discomfort around my lower lumbar spine. Anyone who sleeps in the prone position would benefit from a firmer mattress to prevent lower back pain. They might find some suitable options on our best mattresses for stomach sleepers page.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

As a stomach sleeper myself, I’m always looking for mattresses that balance support and comfort. Typically, I’d steer clear of pillow-top mattresses for this sleeping position since stomach sleepers need firmer support to avoid their hips sinking too deeply into the bed’s layers, which can lead to lower back pain. However, the Saatva Classic bucks that trend, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 for both edge support and general support. In other words, this bed should help stomach sleepers like myself maintain proper alignment while offering a plush, comfortable sleep surface.

As one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers, the Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels, and I’d recommend the Luxury Firm or Firm model for stomach sleepers. The mattress features a traditional innerspring design with a unique coil-on-coil construction. The bottom layer consists of a durable coil system, providing firm support for the hips and lower back, while the top layer of softer coils and a plush pillow top offers just the right amount of cushioning.

One of my fellow mattress testers, Nichole Mondshein, had similar thoughts about stomach sleeping on the Saatva, saying, “I think a lot of stomach sleepers should be happy on the Luxury Firm model, but I’d recommend trying the Firm model if you’re a strict stomach sleeper. A firm mattress helps keep the hips and shoulders aligned, which is important for avoiding back pain.”

After spending a few hours with the Saatva Classic, I gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 for support. The coil-on-coil construction offers excellent support for my spine, keeping my hips elevated and properly aligned with my shoulders. Even with the pillow top, I didn’t experience any sinking at my hips, which is crucial for stomach sleepers.

A person stomach sleeping on the Saatva Classic.
Our tester Nichole stomach sleeping on the Saatva Classic mattress.

The Saatva scored another perfect 5 out of 5 for its materials. The mattress is crafted with high-quality components, including organic cotton, pressure-relieving foam, and a durable coil-on-coil design. The gentle pillow top offers just the right amount of plushness without compromising on the mattress’s overall support. I appreciated that the materials felt breathable, so I didn’t get too hot during testing.

However, I did give the Saatva a 3 out of 5 for motion isolation. While this mattress provides exceptional bounce and support, the coil-on-coil construction isn’t great at absorbing motion. If you share the bed with a partner or pet who moves around a lot, you may feel those movements on your side of the mattress.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress combines a foam comfort layer and sturdy coils. This combination of materials makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. It comes in three firmness levels, and we recommend the Medium model for most back sleepers. It’s a great choice for shoppers who are looking for a new mattress on a budget. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night. I also think the Signature Hybrid could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice, firm edge support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

More than anyone else, side sleepers need a mattress that provides enough cushioning around the shoulders and hips since that’s where they put the most pressure while lying down. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid provides just that, earning a 4.5 out of 5 for overall pressure relief. The quilted memory foam pillow top conforms to the body, offering a soft, cushioned feel where they need it most. With this mattress, I found myself sinking in comfortably, which helped alleviate pressure points while I slept on my side.

Using our pressure map — a specialized mat that measures areas of high, moderate, and low pressure — on the Signature Hybrid, I found that it showed mostly green and a touch of yellow when side sleeping. However, the Soft model should ideally provide additional relief. Overall, the Signature Hybrid is a solid option for side sleepers who need extra cushion at the shoulders and hips.

Nichole Mondshein, one of my fellow mattress testers, saw similar results, noting, “Side sleepers should rest comfortably on this mattress, especially if they want more of a balanced feel. However, if you’re looking for a mattress with extra pressure relief around the shoulders and hips, I’d recommend opting for the Soft model of the Signature Hybrid.”

A person side sleeping on the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid.
My colleague Nichole testing out the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

When it comes to mobility, this mattress really shines. I rated it a 5 out of 5 for responsiveness because the hybrid design gives the mattress lots of bounce. I could feel the surface spring back quickly after pressing down on it, which made moving around or changing positions during the night incredibly easy. This responsiveness also makes the Signature Hybrid a great choice for combination sleepers, as it’s easy to shift around and adjust.

As for overall comfort, I also found back sleeping quite comfortable on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. The support is firm enough to keep my spine aligned without feeling too stiff. The mattress offers good edge support as well, so I never felt like I was going to fall, even when lying near the edge.

However, the Signature Hybrid fell short on motion isolation, earning a 3.5 out of 5 in this category. When I tested it with a colleague, we both felt each other’s movements pretty clearly, especially when one of us got in and out of bed or changed sleeping positions. If you share your bed with a partner who tends to toss and turn, you might prefer a mattress with better motion isolation.

The only other downside I could find to the Signature Hybrid is that strict stomach sleepers like myself will not get the lift they need from this mattress. Stomach sleepers need something that can support their hips and prevent them from sinking too far into the bed.

Similar to the Birch Natural, the Birch Luxe Natural blends Talalay latex foam with sturdy coils that are zoned for support. We think it’s a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who enjoy a firmer bed. Its luxury upgrades include a softer cover with organic cotton and cashmere, plus the mattress has earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. To learn more, see our video review.

What our tester says:

“I love that the Birch Luxe Natural is an eco-friendly model. I think a lot of people would find comfort in knowing there are no harmful chemicals in this bed and it’s made from organic materials. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, I think the Birch Luxe could be a great option for you. It’s firm, yet breathable.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

If you’re an eco-friendly sleeper looking to snag a bed that’s as green-minded as you are, you’ve got to take a look at the Birch Luxe Natural mattress. We gave it a 4.5 out of 5 for materials for its all-natural latex foam, sturdy coils, and a Euro top made from organic cotton, cashmere, and wool. The result is a supremely cozy structure that’s also kind to the environment.

Latex tends to provide a firmer, bouncier feel, which is exactly what most folks need to hit that sweet spot between support and pressure relief. When I tested this mattress using our pressure map, I saw mostly blue and green while lying on my back, indicating that this mattress is excellent at alleviating pressure in this position. My hips didn’t sink in too much, and my spine stayed aligned, so I’d say this is a great fit for back sleepers and folks with back pain.

RELATED: Best Latex Mattresses

That said, side sleepers might not fare as well, as I noticed pressure build-up at my shoulder and hip during my side-sleeping test. The pressure map showed red areas in these spots, so strict side sleepers looking for extra contouring may want to opt for a softer mattress. Overall, I gave the Birch Luxe Natural a 4 out 5 for pressure relief.

When it comes to support, the Birch Luxe excels, earning it a rating of 4.5 out of 5. While lying on my back, I felt fully supported without any sagging at my hips or lower back. The firmness of the latex ensures that my spine remains neutral and well-supported, even during long stretches of testing.

As far as materials go, I gave the Birch Luxe Natural a perfect 5 out of 5. I love that it’s made from organic and all-natural materials, with no chemicals involved. My fellow mattress tester, Bridget Chapman, agreed with me, “I love that the Birch Luxe is an eco-friendly model.” she said. “I think a lot of people would find comfort in knowing there are no harmful chemicals in this bed and it’s made from organic materials,”

A person smiles while lounging on a Birch Luxe mattress.
Our mattress tester Bridget pressing into the pillow top of the Birch Luxe.

These materials also help the Birch Luxe regulate temperature, and we gave it a 4 out of 5 in the category of cooling. The individually wrapped coils help to promote airflow and keep things breathable, so I didn’t feel overheated while lying on it. Most couples and hot sleepers should be comfortable with the cooling capabilities of this mattress.

However, there are a couple of drawbacks to note. The Birch Luxe Natural didn’t perform as well on motion transfer, which could be a problem for light sleepers (this is typical of latex beds). If you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns, you might feel their movements. Additionally, this mattress may not be the best choice for people with sensitive joints. These sleepers will likely need a soft mattress with more cushioning to relieve pressure at the hips and shoulders.

Other Pillow-Top Mattresses I Considered

My fellow mattress testers and I put many other pillow-top mattresses through the wringer. And while we found a couple of great runners-up, they still didn’t quite make it onto our best-of list. However, these are still great beds that are worth considering, depending on what your needs are.

Avocado Green

The Avocado Green mattress almost made this list for its environmentally friendly construction, ergonomic support zones, and sturdy edge support. This bed is perfect for eco-conscious folks who want a responsive and supportive mattress, as its bouncy latex should be comfortable for back sleepers who prefer feeling like they’re more “on top” of the bed instead of “inside” of it.

Ultimately, I didn’t include the Avocado Green on my list because, even with the added mattress topper, I think a lot of folks will find that the latex is too bouncy for their liking and might not provide the deep pressure-relieving contouring that makes pillow-top mattresses so desirable.

Saatva HD Mattress

The Saatva HD gets an honorable mention because it is another great option for heavier sleepers (over 250 pounds). Heavier side sleepers, especially those with sensitive joints, should look no further than the Saatva HD. These sleepers should get plenty of contouring from the HD’s plush pillow top and ample support from the zoned latex and coil innerspring system.

However, the Saatva HD didn’t make it onto my list because it is firm for a pillow-top mattress (7 out of 10 on the firmness scale), meaning sleepers in other weight categories might find this bed too hard for their liking.

How We Picked and Tested These Pillow-Top Mattresses

We have tested hundreds of mattresses, so we know exactly what to look for in terms of comfort, support, and durability. We combine a hands-on approach with expert input and real-world assessments to evaluate each mattress on a variety of factors that matter most to you, from support to pressure relief, to cooling and beyond.

We also team up with a dedicated network of sleep experts and professionals, including physical therapists, chiropractors, and sleep specialists, to back our recommendations with professional expertise. This collaboration gives us the confidence to recommend mattresses based on how well they support various sleeping positions, preferences, and sleep-related concerns.

To form a comprehensive understanding of how each latex mattress performs, we use pressure-mapping technology to determine its pain-relieving capabilities, a thermal gun to see how its construction affects temperature regulation, and motion transfer tests to see if couples and combination sleepers will find it comfortable.

Cooling

Using a thermal gun, we measure the temperature of the mattress before we get onto the bed and then after laying on it for 5 minutes. If the temperature increases 5 degrees or less that indicates excellent cooling; 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling; 10 to 15 degrees indicates satisfactory cooling; and over 15 degrees indicates poor cooling.

Pressure Relief

To test a bed’s pressure-relieving abilities, we use a test called the pressure map. The test involves a specialized mat  that I lay out on a mattress and lie on in various positions. The map then gives a digital thermal reading of the places where pressure is being alleviated and where it’s building up on our bodies in various positions on each mattress.

Our medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, advises, “Choose a medium soft to medium firm mattress made of high-quality materials like memory foam or latex to give you the best pressure point relief. Features like zoned support, motion isolation and temperature regulation are all also great things to look for.”

Motion Isolation

We test motion transfer to measure how much movement you will likely detect from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with a combination sleeper who tends to switch between sleeping positions throughout the night, you’ll want a bed that can effectively trap motion. Low motion transfer, or good motion isolation, can help you sleep soundly, no matter who’s rolling around next to you.

My fellow mattress testers and I test motion transfer in a few different ways. For the first motion isolation test, I lie on the mattress with a colleague, switch between different sleeping positions, and see how much they feel me roll around. We take turns moving around on the bed while the other lies still to estimate how much motion someone might detect while sleeping with a partner.

Next, my fellow mattress testers and I place a full glass of water on the bed and see how much the liquid moves around with us. If the water has zero to little movement, it’s safe to say the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see.

The last test is the seismometer test. A seismometer is an instrument used to measure and record vibrations caused by motion. In this case, the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer. This test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes with a seismometer.

What To Consider When Buying A Pillow-Top Mattress

There are tons of pillow-top mattress options on the market, making it difficult to find one that’s right for you. However, once you know what to look for and what you need out of a new mattress, finding the right mattress becomes as easy as taking a nap. Here’s everything I consider when reviewing and testing pillow-top mattresses.

Sleeping Position and Firmness

Your sleeping position plays a big role in selecting the best pillow-top mattress for you. Whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper, the right pillow-top mattress will help provide support and keep your spine aligned.

  • Side sleepers: For side sleepers, a pillow-top mattress can be a game-changer. The extra softness on top helps relieve pressure at the shoulders and hips, which can be especially important for side sleepers who often experience discomfort in these areas. Look for a softer pillow top (around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale) to get enough cushioning for your pressure points while still maintaining support.
  • Back sleepers: Pillow-top mattresses can also work well for back sleepers, as long as they offer the right amount of support underneath. A medium-firm mattress (6.5 on the firmness scale) with a soft pillow top is ideal to keep the spine aligned while offering just enough pressure relief on the lower back. This combination ensures that your back doesn’t feel too stiff, while still getting the necessary support.
  • Stomach sleepers: While most pillow-top mattresses tend to be softer, stomach sleepers typically need something firmer (7 or higher on the firmness scale) to prevent the hips from sinking too deeply, which could cause spinal misalignment. For stomach sleepers, a firmer pillow top or hybrid option may be more appropriate.

Body Type and Weight

Body type and weight also play a significant role in finding the right pillow-top mattress.

  • Under 130 pounds: Lighter individuals will likely prefer a softer pillow-top mattress, which provides more cushioning and pressure relief without sinking too deeply into the mattress.
  • 130–250 pounds (average weight): Those in this weight range typically need a medium to medium-firm pillow-top mattress. This range will provide a good balance of support and comfort, offering enough cushioning while preventing excessive sinking.
  • Over 250 pounds: Heavier sleepers may need a firmer pillow-top mattress, or even a hybrid design, to provide the necessary support and prevent excessive sinking. A firmer mattress will also help with proper spinal alignment.

Edge Support

A mattress’s edge support is another key factor, especially for couples or anyone who likes to spread out. Pillow-top mattresses tend to offer a softer edge due to their plush layers. However, some models come with reinforced edges, which provide stronger support around the perimeter of the bed.

This is important because poor edge support can make the mattress feel smaller, especially if you or your partner tend to sleep close to the edge.

Pressure Relief and Contouring

Pressure relief is one of the most significant advantages of pillow-top mattresses. The top layer is typically made of plush materials like memory foam or soft polyfoam, which contour to your body’s shape and provide relief at key pressure points such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back.

If you experience pain or pressure at these points, this type of  mattress could be a great option. However, it’s important to choose the right level of softness to prevent excessive sinking, especially if you’re a heavier individual.

Materials

The materials in a pillow-top mattress directly affect its comfort, support, and durability. Most pillow tops are made from foam, memory foam, or a combination of foam and natural materials like cotton or wool. These materials are designed to provide comfort and softness, but they should also be breathable to prevent heat buildup.

Memory foam pillow tops are particularly popular for their body-contouring abilities, but they can retain heat. If you’re a hot sleeper, you might want to look for a pillow-top mattress with cooling features, such as a gel-infused foam layer or breathable fabric.

Dr. Raj Dasgupta says that different types of materials can also impact our anatomy in different ways, “Memory foam contours for personalized support but may retain heat,” he explains. “Latex offers resilience and allergen-resistance. Innerspring mattresses provide firmer support and motion transfer. Hybrid mattresses blend foam and coils for balanced comfort and cooling. Gel-infused mattresses regulate temperature. Pillow-top mattresses offer extra cushioning but may lose effectiveness over time. The impact varies mostly on factors like body weight and sleeping positions.”

RELATED: Best Bed-in-a-Box Mattresses

Temperature and Cooling

Pillow-top mattresses, especially those with memory foam or polyfoam layers, can retain heat and make the mattress feel warmer. If you tend to sleep hot, look for a pillow-top mattress that incorporates cooling technologies, such as gel-infused memory foam, breathable covers, or ventilation channels to promote airflow.

RELATED: Best Cooling Mattress

Some pillow-top models use natural materials like cotton and wool, which can help wick away moisture and keep you cooler throughout the night.

Motion Isolation

If you share your bed with a partner, motion isolation is crucial to ensure that you aren’t disturbed by their movements. Pillow-top mattresses, especially those made with memory foam, can perform well in this area by absorbing motion and preventing it from transferring to the opposite side of the bed.

However, some innerspring pillow tops may be less effective at isolating motion, so it’s important to check whether the mattress design includes motion-dampening features if you’re a light sleeper.

Price

Pillow-top mattresses can vary in price, depending on the materials used and the brand. Generally, you’ll find that the price ranges from affordable to high-end, with hybrid pillow-top models or those using premium materials often costing more. While they can be more expensive than “bare bones” memory foam and innerspring models, pillow-top mattresses tend to provide better comfort, especially for side sleepers and those with joint pain.

Warranty and Sleep Trial

A good warranty and sleep trial are essential when buying any mattress, including a pillow top. Most brands offer a sleep trial ranging from 90 to 120 nights, allowing you to test the mattress and return it if it doesn’t meet your expectations. A 10-year warranty is standard for most mattresses, covering defects such as sagging or manufacturing issues. However, some mattress brands go the extra mile and offer a 15-year warranty or even a lifetime or “forever” warranty.

It really depends on the type of materials used. Latex tends to be slightly more durable than traditional polyurethane or memory foams, and steel coils tend to be more durable than all three foams. So, pay close attention to the construction specs of your bed before buying.

Can you flip a pillow-top mattress?

Unfortunately, no. As the name suggests, a pillow-top mattress is meant to have the pillow top layer on top of the bed, so flipping it would be antithetical to the design. But you can rotate the bed 180 degrees to prevent sagging.

What is the advantage of a pillow-top mattress?

The extra layers of foam up top help to establish some immediate comfort and sinkage, which can be great for folks in need of deep pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.

How do you fix a sagging pillow-top mattress?

I’d recommend rotating your bed 180 degrees. You can also slip a piece of plywood under the mattress where it’s sagging, which should help stabilize the shape. None of the mattresses on this round-up need box springs, but you could use a slatted bed frame if you so choose.

Are pillow-top mattresses good for your back?

Pillow-top mattresses can provide cushioning needed to fill in the lumbar region and ease the hips, allowing the comfort that’s crucial for alleviating back pain. However, ensure that your pillow-top mattress has a strong support system to keep your body lifted and in proper alignment throughout the night.

How long do pillow-top mattresses last?

Pillow-top mattresses last roughly 7–10 years depending on the mattress construction. Stronger support systems and quality materials should lead to better durability and an elongated mattress lifespan.
