It’s almost our favorite day of the year: Presidents Day. Aside from being our nation’s designated holiday for celebrating famous presidents George Washington (born on February 22, 1732) and Abe Lincoln (born on February 12, 1809), it’s also the third-largest mattress sale day of the year! Who knew?

To celebrate the big day (which officially falls on February 19th this year), we’re rounding up all the best mattress deals on the internet. We’ll be updating this list regularly, so make sure to come back for all the latest bargains and discounts.

And in honor of the holiday — if you’re curious what snoozing in the White House looks like, check out the nine presidential sleep habits that might surprise you and what four former presidential bedrooms looked like.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

The Nectar Premier is a luxurious all-foam mattress equipped with quality materials. A moisture-wicking cover and gel-infused comfort layer create a cooling, thermoregulating mattress for hot sleepers. Perhaps its strongest attribute is its next-level pressure relief. Six inches of foam work to contour sensitive areas, but the high-density foam at the bottom of the bed provides plenty of support. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“My favorite thing about the Nectar Premier is its great pressure relief. This medium-soft mattress is a great fit for side sleepers looking for plush comfort. It might also be a nice fit for sleepers who deal with shoulder pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Shopping Presidents Day Mattress Sales Like a Pro

Now that you know the best Presidents Day deals in the online mattress market, it’s important to be prepared before you make your purchase. After all, people tend to spend a third of their life in bed, so you’ll want to make sure you’re happy with your mattress. So take your time, do your research, and take a look at some of our expert Sleepopolis tips below.

Shop Online

Though there are some benefits to buying a mattress in person, like being able to try it out and ask questions to the salesperson, you won’t know whether or not a mattress will work for you just by laying on it for a few minutes in a store. Luckily, most online mattresses these days offer sleep trials, which allow you to test the mattress for an average of about 100 to 365 nights. After this period of time, you’ll know whether or not the mattress will suit your specific needs.

Buying online during big sales days like Presidents Day or Black Friday also comes with the added benefit of avoiding the sale day hullabaloo. At home, you won’t feel the pressure to get a mattress before someone else does, and you won’t have a salesperson pushing you to buy a mattress that might give them a better commission, but leave you with a worse sleep experience. By purchasing a mattress online, you can take your time and weigh your options more carefully.

Make Sure to Do Your Research

Before you even start looking at mattresses, it can be helpful to make a list of all the things that are important to you in a mattress. For example, do you prefer to sleep on your stomach, side, back, or are you a combination sleeper? Depending on your sleep position, you’ll want a different firmness level. We typically recommend side sleepers go with a softer mattress, back sleepers go with a medium-firm mattress, stomach sleepers opt for a firm mattress, and combination sleepers look for something with bounce so they can switch positions easily throughout the night. You’ll also want to consider whether or not you sleep with a partner or pet, in which case you’ll want a mattress that absorbs movement, or has good motion isolation. Finally, your body weight can play a big part in how you experience a mattress, and heavier sleepers will want to go with something with a good amount of support.

After you’ve made your list of your sleep needs, you’ll want to learn about what types of mattresses are available on the market. Below is a list of the common types of mattresses you’ll see and their estimated lifespans.

  • Innerspring Mattresses – have spring coils and last an average of eight years.
  • Latex Mattresses – have an average lifespan of twelve years and are made entirely of latex foam for added comfort.
  • Memory Foam Mattresses – offer body contouring, pressure relief, and support, and usually last about ten years.
  • Hybrid Mattresses – made from a variety of materials for a combination of comfort and support that’s effective for an average of ten years.

You’ll also want to consider your budget before purchasing a mattress. All-foam mattresses tend to be a bit less expensive, but they don’t typically offer much bounce, and heavier sleepers might find they sink too far into them for adequate support. Though there are some great budget mattresses on the market, you don’t want to purchase a mattress just because it’s cheap. In our opinion, a high-quality mattress is worth the money, since they’re likely to be more durable.

Don’t be Fooled by Good Deals

Though you might be tempted by some of the crazy good deals you’ll see on Presidents Day, it’s a mistake to just go after the best deal. Doorbusters tend to be lower quality mattresses, and the great thing about Presidents Day sales is that you can get a great deal on a high-quality mattress.

Make sure that you’ve done your research beforehand, and go for a deal on a mattress that’s right for you. When you know what you’re looking for beforehand, you’ll be able to put your blinders on to the deals that seem too good to be true, because usually, they are.

Consider All the Factors

Though we’ve talked about the type and feel of a mattress that might work for you, you’ll also want to consider factor’s like company policy, which could make or break your decision.

Warranty – Different mattress brands offer different warranties. Typically you’ll see a 10-year warranty, 15-year warranty, 20-year warranty, or lifetime warranty. Don’t settle for a mattress with anything less than a 10-year warranty. Quality warranties will cover sagging of about 1.5 inches or more for innerspring mattresses or 1 inch or more for memory foam or latex mattresses. A full warranty will cover replacement costs, but limited warranties might have different policies.

Shipping and Return Policy – Though many online mattresses these days ship for free, you will have to pay a fee for some. Those who live in Alaska or Hawaii should be extra careful to read the fine print, since many brands don’t offer free shipping to those two states. You’ll also want to make sure you know what the brand’s return policy is. Some companies offer free returns, while others don’t offer returns at all.

Materials – For some shoppers, it can be important to know where their mattress’s materials are made, and whether or not they’re eco-friendly. On most sites, it will list where the mattresses materials are made. Look for words like GREENGUARD Gold Certified or CertiPUR-US® Certified, which will tell you that the materials are free of harmful chemicals. You can also check out our picks for the best organic mattresses, hypoallergenic mattresses, and mattresses without fiberglass for some great options.

Buying a mattress can already be a stressful experience, but buying it on Presidents Day can be even more so. Here at Sleepopolis, we want to make the process as easy as possible, so you can get the best mattress for your unique sleep needs.
