I’ll take you through the qualities and construction of the memory foam, cooling Cocoon Chill mattress.

The Cocoon Chill is made by veteran mattress industry titan, Sealy. The bed is aptly named, since you’ll feel enveloped in cooling comfort. It’s a memory foam mattress made with plenty of cooling technology, like its Phase Change Material mattress cover that actively works to dissipate body heat (more on that later). But is the right mattress for your sleep needs?

In this review, I’m going to share my personal experience testing the Cocoon Chill, how it performed on our Sleepopolis tests, which sleepers I think it’s best for, and Sealy’s policies for this bed. I’ll also answer some FAQs towards the end of the review.

The Cocoon Chill mattress offers an affordable blend of cooling technology and robust support. Rooted in Sealy’s 140 years of craftsmanship, the Cocoon Chill is designed to enhance sleep quality and features premium pressure relief and a specialized cooling cover that promotes quicker sleep onset and sustained coolness throughout the night.

This mattress is ideal for sleepers seeking motion isolation and adaptive support. The Cocoon Chill is available in two models: the 10″ memory foam mattress and the 12″ hybrid mattress. Both models include a cooling cover to absorb and dissipate heat effectively and provide a cooler sleeping experience.

What is the Cocoon Chill Mattress Made Of? 

The Cocoon Chill is an all-foam mattress made with three layers of pressure-relieving foam. It has a height of 10 inches.

Cover – This mattress has a cooling cover made from a stretch-knit fabric that is woven with Phase Change Material, which actively works to dissipate body heat. Phase Change Material is a high-tech fabric that can actually absorb body heat, which is what gives this bed its super cool feel.

Comfort Layer – The top layer of this foam bed is made from Perfect Fit Memory Foam. This offers lots of contouring and some gentle pressure relief. 

Transition Layer – Next up is a layer of Responsive Comfort Foam. This layer helps reduce motion transfer and prevents you from sinking too far into the mattress.

Base Layer – The base layer, or support layer, of this bed is made from high-density poly foam. This adds some nice firmness, stability, and durability to the bed.

Cocoon Chill Mattress Firmness

Before we get started, I’d like to mention that firmness is subjective, and how firm a mattress feels will depend on factors like your body weight and preferred sleeping position. To get the best idea of firmness possible, I combined my own expert opinion on this bed’s firmness with that of my colleagues, and together we came up with an average firmness score.

We decided to give this bed a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is just a bit firmer than the industry standard for medium firmness, which is 6.5. This means that this is a solidly firm mattress. 

When I pressed into the memory foam, it had an initial firmness before it started contouring. I felt myself sinking into the mattress slightly, although this mattress is not plush. While testing the Cocoon Chill, I felt lifted, and my spine stayed perfectly aligned. Based on this, I’d recommend this mattress to heavier sleepers in the market for a firm, supportive mattress with minimal sinkage.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).

As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.

As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Is the Cocoon Chill a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?

• Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers should feel nice and supported on this bed. I’d especially recommend it to lightweight back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.
• Light Side Sleepers – This mattress isn’t going to be soft enough for these sleepers. They won’t experience the level of sinkage they need at their hips and shoulders.
• Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend this mattress to lightweight stomach sleepers. They’ll get the level of support they need to promote a neutral spine alignment. 

Is the Cocoon Chill a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)? 

• Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers will do quite well on this mattress. It’ll offer the firm support they need to keep their spines in a nice straight line.
• Average Weight Side Sleepers – Again, side sleepers aren’t going to be happy here. This mattress is too firm for their needs.
• Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I’d say this mattress is a great choice for average weight stomach sleepers. When testing this mattress out on my stomach, I felt that my body was lifted and supported.

Is the Cocoon Chill a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)? 

• Heavy Back Sleepers – This could be a decent option for heavy sleepers, but they will likely sink into the bed’s memory foam and notice discomfort in their hips. I typically steer these sleepers to a mattress designed for their needs, like one of our best mattresses for heavy people.
• Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
• Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.

Cocoon Chill Mattress Performance 

We’ve used a few tools to measure how the Cocoon Chill performs in real life scenarios, like dealing with a restless partner, sleeping with different types of pain, and trying to sleep on the very edge of the bed. I’ll share some of those results below, but first I’m going to discuss how this bed works for sleepers of differing body weights.

Cocoon Chill Mattress Pain Relief Performance

A mattress that helps alleviate pain is one that’s going to relieve pressure at sensitive pain-prone pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. Depending on the type of pain you have, you’ll want to choose a specific mattress to combat it.

To measure how well a mattress relieves pressure, I used a handy pressure mat. The map goes between me and the mattress and measures how much pressure my body exerts on the bed. It then creates a “map” of my body, turning blue for the lowest pressure, and grading up to green, yellow, and lastly red for the highest pressure. 

Back Pain – I think the Cocoon Chill is a great mattress for back pain. As you can see in the maps above, in each position my back is all blue, indicating low pressure.

Shoulder Pain – Though the map is blue at my shoulders as well, I am a lighter weight sleeper who exerts less pressure on the mattress. I’d say most sleepers with shoulder pain should opt for a softer bed.

Hip Pain – As you can see above, there’s an indication of a bit of pressure at my hips on both my side and stomach. If you suffer from hip pain it’s imperative that you choose a soft mattress that’s going to cushion that sensitive area.

Motion Transfer 

Motion transfer measures the amount of movement you’ll likely feel from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with someone who tosses and turns throughout the night, or a pet that moves around a lot, you’ll want a bed that doesn’t transfer much movement. Prioritizing low motion transfer, or what we also call good motion isolation, can ensure you sleep soundly.

Human Test

The first test is simple: we lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. 

During this test, I couldn’t detect any of my colleague’s movements as he got in and out of the bed and switched from sleeping position to sleeping position.

Water Test

Next, we place a full glass of water on the mattress and see how much the water moves around with us. If the liquid has zero to little movement, it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see. Even though I was moving around quite a bit, the liquid in the glass hardly moved, indicating low motion transfer.

Seismometer Test

Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of four, eight, and twelve inches and then measuring the disturbance it causes: the more dramatic the lines are on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.

These are good motion transfer results. Looking at the results of these motion transfer tests, I’d say you won’t feel disturbed by a partner tossing and turning. However, you might feel them when they first climb into bed.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress goes back to its original shape after pressure has been applied. We test each mattress’s responsiveness by pressing down on its top layer, removing our hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils tend to have a high response to pressure. 

Like many memory foam mattresses, the Cocoon Chill isn’t a particularly bouncy or responsive option. This could be an issue for combination sleepers who switch between multiple positions at night. You may feel a bit trapped and have a hard time transitioning from one position to the next. This could also be a dealbreaker for couples, who may prefer an innerspring mattress or one of our best mattresses for sex.

Cooling 

Two people overheat more easily than one, so it’s important for couples to have a cooling mattress. Luckily, the Cocoon Chill sleeps super cool, so you and your partner don’t have to worry about overheating.

To find out how cool the Cocoon Chill sleeps, I used a thermal gun. A thermal gun is a device that uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when someone lies down on it.

If it heats more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.

The temperature only went up 5.2 degrees on the Cocoon Chill mattress, making it an excellent choice for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support tests whether the edges of the bed are sturdy enough to support you when you roll toward them or sleep on the edge. This is important for couples because they want to be able to use their entire mattress. 

When laying and sitting on the edge, I felt a decent amount of sinkage, but I didn’t feel like I was falling off at any point. However, I could feel myself almost hit the platform beneath the mattress when sitting on the corner of the bed.

When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers sank one inch of compression when applying weight to the edge.

Since the Cocoon Chill is so low to the ground, it might not be ideal for those needing strong edge support, such as individuals with mobility issues. However, this bed is still a solid choice for couples who mostly sleep in the bed’s center.

Cocoon Chill Mattress Performance for Couples

If you sleep with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few extra things in mind while shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support.

While the Cocoon Chill has better edge support and responsiveness than other memory foam beds on the market, couples who need to use the entire surface area of the mattress or frequently change positions should consider getting a hybrid mattress.

Cocoon Chill Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing

The Cocoon Chill is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive compressed and will have to be unboxed at home. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress. 

As with many new mattresses, the Cocoon Chill will likely emit a smell when it is first unboxed — this is known as off-gassing. If you do detect an odor, I suggest unzipping the mattress cover and leaving it in a well-ventilated room for a few days while the smell completely dissipates.

My Final Thoughts about Cocoon Chill Mattress

And with that, we’ve made it to the end of my review! Though I can’t tell you if the Cocoon Chill is the right new mattress for you, I’ll leave you with a few of my final thoughts to help you decide on your own!

Who I recommend Cocoon Chill mattress for

• Hot sleepers! This bed does live up to its name — it sleeps super cool. If you’re worried about overheating you’ll be happy with this mattress.
• I think this bed has a great feel for back sleepers. These sleepers will feel well supported on this bed, which is just a bit firmer than the industry standard for medium-firm. I’d also say it’s a great bed for back sleepers with back pain, since that added firmness helps promote a neutral spine alignment.
• I think couples who primarily sleep in the center of the bed could enjoy this mattress. It has good motion isolation, which means you’re unlikely to feel your partner tossing and turning at night. Its cooling capabilities are also great for two sleepers (who sleep hotter than one).

Who I don’t recommend Cocoon Chill mattress for

• I don’t think this mattress is quite right for combination sleepers. You’ll feel more “in” this bed than “on top” of it, which can make switching positions more difficult.
• Strict side sleepers will likely want a softer mattress. I’d recommend they check out our best mattress for side sleepers roundup, which has plenty of beds that offer the pressure relief these sleepers need.

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
