Faux Down GhostPillow Review

The Faux Down GhostPillow is a new offering from bed-in-a-box giant, GhostBed. GhostBed is known for its ultra-cooling mattresses, but the brand also makes a number of sleep products, including bed frames, sheets, toppers, and of course, pillows.

The Faux Down GhostPillow is made of what it sounds like: an artificial material that is meant to mimic the feel of feather down. Faux down pillows have a few ups on real down pillows — they’re hypoallergenic and they tend to be less expensive. However, it’s hard to live up to the cozy, moldable, and breathable feel of down.

Let’s see how the GhostPillow measures up! Short on time? Skip down to my review summary.

Is Faux Down GhostPillow a Good Pillow for You?

Whether or not a pillow will work for you depends on factors like your preferred sleeping position, pain concerns, and personal preferences. Take a look at some of my recommendations below.

Who should try the Faux Down GhostPillow

  • Side sleepers should really like this pillow. It has a medium-high loft that should keep their necks adequately supported.
  • I also think this pillow is a nice choice for back sleepers, who should enjoy the pleasant neck contouring they’ll feel with this pillow.
  • Hot sleepers should appreciate how cool this pillow sleeps! Its fill is nice and breathable, and it has a cooling cover.
  • Anyone looking for a cruelty-free, hypoallergenic, and down-like pillow should be pleased with this down alternative pillow.

Who should not try the Faux Down GhostPillow

  • Stomach sleepers will likely find this pillow to be too lofty for their needs. I’d recommend they check out one of our best pillows for stomach sleepers.
  • Anyone after an adjustable pillow may want to look elsewhere. You can’t add or remove fill to this pillow.
  • Sleepers with neck pain may want to look somewhere else. This pillow feels like down, meaning it’s squeezable and moldable, and doesn’t have the ergonomic support these sleepers need. I’d steer them to one of our best memory foam pillows.

What Does the Faux Down GhostPillow Feel Like?

Now that we know who may and may not like this pillow, let’s dive into the details for all the people it could work for! I like to start with feel, since most sleepers have some idea of the kind of feel they prefer in a pillow, whether it’s soft and squishy or firm and supportive. Before I share my opinion, I’d like to highlight that firmness is subjective and will depend on factors like your preferred sleeping position and weight. For reference, I’m about 110 lb and sleep on my side.

Faux Down GhostPillow Firmness

Before we begin, I’d like to note that in general, side sleepers need a firmer pillow, back sleepers need a medium pillow, and stomach sleepers need a soft pillow. These firmness levels help promote a neutral spinal alignment for each position. However, these firmness levels will depend on your personal preferences. For example, I’m a side sleeper, but prefer a medium-firm, rather than firm, pillow.

I think this pillow has a very pleasant medium-soft feel. It’s soft and squishy (much like down) and offers some nice sinkage. I definitely felt this pillow contouring around my head and neck, which did offer a moderate amount of support. I think it’s a nice option for most side and back sleepers, who should get the support and comfort they need in this pillow. However, I would recommend those looking for added neck support opt for a firmer pillow, like the Memory Foam GhostPillow.

Faux Down GhostPillow Loft

Loft simply refers to a pillow’s height. A pillow can come in one of three lofts: high loft (5 inches or higher), medium loft (3-5 inches), or low loft (2 inches or less). Typically, side sleepers need a high loft pillow, back sleepers need a medium-loft pillow, and stomach sleepers need a low loft pillow. Similar to firmness, these loft levels will help promote a neutral spinal alignment for each position.

The Faux Down GhostPillow has a 7-inch loft, making it a high loft pillow. I tested it in a range of positions, and I’ll share my thoughts on how it felt in those positions below.

Side — I felt really comfortable side sleeping on this pillow! Personally, I’m a fan of a squishy feeling pillow, so I really liked how moldable this pillow felt.

Back — I also enjoyed back sleeping on this pillow! I liked how I felt the microfiber gel fill contouring around my neck. I definitely had a real cloud-like experience sleeping on this pillow.

Stomach — This is the one position that didn’t feel so comfortable. I felt like my face was being suffocated by all the lofty fill, and my neck felt tilted up out of line with my shoulders. I’d steer stomach sleepers to a much lower loft pillow.

Under the Arm — I think this pillow is a nice under the arm option! Most people who like an under the arm pillow want it to be soft and huggable, and I would say this pillow fits the bill!

Between the Legs — I also like this pillow as a between the legs option! It has a high enough loft to prevent your knees from rubbing together. However, personally I use a cheaper pillow as a between the legs option, as it’s not as important to get proper support in this area.

As I mentioned up top, I actually use this pillow on my bed! I’ve only had it for a short while, but I’m enjoying how it stays nice and fluffy and helps me stay cool each night!

What is the Faux Down GhostPillow Made Of?

So we know how this pillow feels, but what makes it feel that way? The best way to show you is to discuss its materials.

Cover – The pillow cover is made from Ghost Ice Fabric, plus it’s removable and zippered. This material is made from cotton velour. It’s also cool to the touch and is meant to dissipate body heat on both sides of the pillow.

Inner Cover – Underneath the removable zippered cover is a breathable inner cover. It is made from 100% natural cotton and has a nice, smooth feel.

Editor’s Note: I use this pillow at home and I found it more comfortable to unzip the outer cover and just put my pillowcase over the inner cover.

Fill – The pillow is filled with a microfiber gel fill. It has a huggable, soft feel, that’s very similar to down.

These materials are all hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, and antimicrobial.

My Final Thoughts About the Faux Down GhostPillow

Well, we’ve reached the end of my review. To sum things up, I think the Faux Down GhostPillow is a great cooling pillow that should appeal to side sleepers and back sleepers. It has the soft and moldable feeling of down, with the added benefits of being antimicrobial and hypoallergenic.

The two groups who I think should avoid this pillow are stomach sleepers, who should opt for a much lower loft pillow, and those with neck pain, who I think would do better on a solid foam block pillow, which you can find in our best pillows for neck pain roundup.

Faux Down GhostPillow Vs

If you’re looking at the Faux Down GhostPillow, it’s a good idea to compare it to some popular pillows from other bedding companies. Below, I’ll show how it stacks up to one of its top competitors: the Casper pillow.

Faux Down GhostPillow vs Casper Pillow

  • Both pillows use a microfiber fill that mimics the feel of down, without the use of feathers.
  • The Casper pillow is a loftier and offers a bit more support.
  • The GhostPillow Faux Down is a bit more expensive than the Casper pillow.
