Tempur-Pedic Alternatives

We have affiliate relationships where we are paid a commission on sales through some of our links. See our disclosures.

The Tempur-Pedic brand first started in the 1990s in Sweden, but these memory foam beds quickly become popular around the world, thanks to the Tempur foam included in their construction. This material was first created by NASA in the 1960s to help absorb shock waves, but Tempur-Pedic used Tempur foam to create plush, body-contouring, and pressure relieving memory foam mattresses. Now, Tempur-Pedic offers three main mattresses on their website — The TEMPUR-Cloud, TEMPUR-Adapt, and TEMPUR-Breeze — along with Pro and Luxe versions of some of these beds. The brand also offers hybrid models that are slightly more durable and stable than their original all-foam beds. However, these luxury mattresses are often on the pricier side, ranging in price from $1,999 to $5,599 for a queen sized Tempur-Pedic mattress.

Because of this, many other mattress companies have taken a note from Tempur-Pedic and started making their own high-quality memory foam beds. However, these brands are usually more budget-conscious, which is good news for shoppers who are looking for the qualities of a Tempur-Pedic bed without the high price point.

Below, we’ll outline eight beds that have similar elements of the original Tempur-Pedic mattresses. While some of the beds on this roundup are hybrid mattresses and others are all-foam, all of them combine some aspects of pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, or feel that are present in Tempur-Pedic beds. Keep reading to find some cheaper alternatives to this popular bedding brand.

The Nectar is that rare foam mattress that’s supportive enough for stomach sleepers, and should keep their hips aligned with their shoulders.
Pros of the Nectar
The Nectar offers a balanced feel, with contouring and support in equal measure.
Back sleepers should feel supported, but pleasantly cushioned on the Nectar.
Couples shouldn’t be too disturbed by movement, as the Nectar isolates motion well.
Cons of the Nectar
The Nectar isn’t supportive enough to be one of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers, which accommodate folks weighing 250 pounds or more. While heavy side sleepers might be comfortable, heavy back sleepers with chronic pain will need something softer and heavy stomach sleepers will probably need something firmer.

The Nectar delivers a balance of comfort and support: it’s definitely contouring, but still provides a firm enough foundation for most light to average weight sleepers, especially if they sleep on their back or stomach. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“I think back sleepers would be especially happy on this bed. They’ll get plenty of support from the firm memory foam in the Nectar Classic, which should translate to great pressure relief and a good night’s sleep. Hot sleepers who have to have a memory foam mattress should also have no trouble at all falling asleep on this bed.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-Cloud is actually one of the Tempur-Pedic’s most affordable mattresses. It combines top layers of plush memory foam for a cloud-like sensation with durable high-density poly foam in its base layer to add some structure and stability. Overall, we rated the TEMPUR-Cloud at a 7 on the firmness scale, meaning that it has around a medium-firm feel to it. While the TEMPUR-Cloud is definitely a plush, pressure-relieving mattress, it is also strong enough to support back sleepers, providing a healthy spinal alignment.

In comparison, the Nectar mattress is a more budget-friendly option that has many of the same qualities as the TEMPUR-Cloud. The Nectar scored a 6.5 on the firmness scale, so it is just a little bit softer than the TEMPUR-Cloud. Because the Nectar Classic is softer, average-weight side sleepers may prefer this mattress to the TEMPUR-Cloud. In terms of price, you can often snag a queen sized Nectar for under $1,000 with discounts, while a queen sized TEMPUR-Cloud costs around $1,999.

What our tester says: “I think memory foam lovers should be happy on the Nectar. This bed has a classic memory foam feel, so there’s lots of sinkage, contouring, and pressure relief. This can be great for anyone with shoulder pain or hip pain since it gives them cushioning at sensitive pressure points.” –  – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

Customers praise the Nectar mattress for how well it helped to alleviate their back pain. Many of the reviewers on the Nectar website stated that they had been dealing with back pain for years, and the Nectar helped to alleviate this pain in a matter of months.

Pros of the Nectar Mattress

  • Sleepers who suffer from back pain should rest comfortably on the Nectar. This bed does a strong job of supporting the lumbar region by filling in the space around the lower back with its plush foams.
  • The Nectar is great for combination sleepers who prefer memory foam beds. Since the Nectar doesn’t offer much sinkage, these sleepers should have no issues rolling around and switching between different sleeping positions at night.
  • The Nectar Classic is highly responsive for an all-foam mattress, making it a great bed for sex.

Cons of the Nectar Mattress

  • The Nectar is most likely not going to be firm enough for heavier stomach sleepers. These sleepers need a mattress that is sturdy enough to keep their hips in line with their shoulders, promoting a healthy spinal alignment.

Helix has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. The Midnight is one of their medium models. It has enough contouring for side sleepers, but should still be supportive enough for back sleepers, as long as they don’t mind a softer bed. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I like the Helix Midnight Luxe for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-soft to medium-firm feel should give these folks the right balance of comfort and support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is one of Tempur-Pedic’s softest mattresses currently on the market. This bed is made with the brand’s proprietary TEMPUR-ES and TEMPUR-APR foams, which help with body contouring and pressure relief. This mattress definitely works best for side sleepers, especially those with pain in their lower back, hips, or shoulders. Plus, the foams included in the TEMPUR-ProAdapt’s construction help to reduce movement across the surface of this mattress, which is an added benefit for couples or anyone who sleeps with a partner or a pet.

The main difference between the TEMPUR-ProAdapt and the Helix Midnight Luxe is that the latter is a hybrid mattress, so it includes both foam and coils in its construction. These additional coils do help the Helix Midnight Luxe to be more durable and supportive, but it still scored a 6 on the firmness scale, so it has a similar feel to the TEMPUR-ProAdapt. Additionally, the pillow top included on the Helix Midnight Luxe gives it that initial cloud-like feel, very similar to the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, but this mattress also includes zoned support. This means that the area around the hips is firmer, while the area around the lower back is softer, helping sleepers get the right balance between pressure relief and stability.

What our tester says: “The Helix Midnight Luxe has an extra pillow top layer and zoned support in its construction. It feels more cushioning than the standard Midnight, but, in the end, I also gave it a 6 out of 10 rating on our firmness scale. I’d especially recommend this mattress to sleepers who suffer from back pain, since zoned support helps promote a healthy, straight spinal alignment.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

Reviews on the Helix website state that the Helix Midnight Luxe offers the perfect balance between comfort and stability. While customers could feel the top cover of this mattress offering initial plushness, the coils in this bed’s base layer add some durability and support.

Pros of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • The Helix Midnight Luxe is very responsive and bouncy, thanks to the coils included in its base layer. This is helpful for combination sleepers who need to be able to move around and switch positions easily throughout the night. As an added bonus, a responsive mattress equals a good mattress for sex.
  • The coils included in the Helix Midnight Luxe add some extra airflow and breathability. This bed also includes a Tencel top cover — a material that has a cool-to-the-touch feel.
  • The Helix Midnight Luxe’s comfort layer is made of Memory Plus foam. This material helps to relieve pressure around sensitive joints like the hips, shoulders, and lower back, and it offers some additional body-contouring to this bed.

Cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Heavier sleepers won’t get the support or durability they need from the Helix Midnight Luxe because of this bed’s medium-soft feel. We recommend that these sleepers check out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people to find some firmer options.

The DreamCloud Premier Rest is a medium-firm hybrid mattress that’s versatile enough to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. The plush pillow top and individually wrapped coils create a balanced feel that should appeal to back and side sleepers. Couples should appreciate the impressive motion isolation and responsiveness. See our full DreamCloud Premier Rest video review for additional information.

What our tester says:

“I also like that this bed offers pressure relief without sacrificing support. Its quilted pillow top layer is a great value add that I think many sleepers should appreciate. All in all, if you’re looking for durable support and pressure point relief, the Premier Rest is a great pick.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid is very similar to the original TEMPUR-Cloud in terms of its medium-firm feel, but this mattress includes coils in its construction that allow for extra bounce, responsiveness, and stronger edge support. In comparison, the DreamCloud Premier Rest scored a 6.5 on the firmness scale, so it has a pretty similar medium-firm feel to the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid. This bed also has a very plush overall feel, but not so much that sleepers should find themselves sinking into the layers of the DreamCloud Premier Rest. Instead, this bed still has more of an “on top” feel to it, thanks to the individually wrapped coils in its base layer.

In terms of price, a queen sized TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid costs around $2,199, while a queen sized DreamCloud Premier Rest costs around $1,799. These two beds are similar in price, but budget shoppers are probably still going to want to opt for this Tempur-Pedic alternative, instead of spending an extra couple hundred dollars on the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid.

What our tester says: “I absolutely loved the DreamCloud Premier Rest. Lying down on the mattress, I felt instant plushness from the top layer of the bed. However, I didn’t totally sink into the bed and felt lifted up and supported. I switch between sleeping on my side and back, and I felt equally comfortable in both of these positions. I was particularly impressed with how comfortable I felt on my side, because I often feel lots of pressure buildup on my shoulder.” Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

The majority of the reviews on the DreamCloud website actually praised this brand for its stellar customer service. These customers said they had no problems while interacting with the DreamCloud staff, and they never felt like they were being pushed into buying a more expensive mattress model.

Pros of the DreamCloud Premier Rest Mattress

  • Back sleepers should sleep very comfortably on the DreamCloud Premier Rest, as it has a strong balance between pressure relief and stability. This helps back sleepers get the relief they need around their lumbar region, while still keeping their spine in a neutral alignment.
  • The DreamCloud Premier Rest is responsive and bouncy, making it a strong pick for combination sleepers. These sleepers should be able to switch positions easily without getting “stuck” in this bed.
  • The DreamCloud Premier Rest is considered a high-quality, luxury mattress. This means that it should last customers around 12–15 years. However, this mattress also has a lifetime warranty, so you don’t have to worry about this bed sinking or sagging prematurely.

Cons of the DreamCloud Premier Rest Mattress

  • One big difference between the DreamCloud Premier Rest and the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid is that the former does not offer as much body contouring from its construction as the latter does. If you’re especially interested in a body-contouring mattress, check out our roundup of the best memory foam mattresses instead.

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-Adapt is very similar to the TEMPUR-ProAdapt outlined above, but this mattress is slightly more durable, with a score of 6.5 on the firmness scale, so it has more of a medium-firm feel to it. While this mattress might not be as plush as the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, it still scored very well on our pressure map test, so it is a strong choice for both side sleepers and sleepers who suffer with joint pain, especially in their hips or shoulders.

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress, so along with a layer of gel-infused memory foam up top, it includes a base layer of sturdy coils. This gives the bed a supportive, responsive feel that’s close to the TEMPUR-Adapt. While it’s definitely pressure relieving, sleepers still shouldn’t feel like they’re “sinking” through the layers of this bed. In terms of firmness, we ranked it as a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale — just slightly firmer than the Adapt. However, it comes in three different firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. We tested the Luxury Firm model, so if you want something a touch closer to medium firm, you can opt for the Softer model.

What our tester says: “If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. It has a traditional, supportive feel, and I’d recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

There are almost 8,500 customer reviews on the WinkBed website, and it has an average customer rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. A common thread is that customers love how the mattress feels on their backs.

Pros of the WinkBed Mattress

  • The gel infusion and coils — which leave plenty of room for airflow — both help the WinkBed sleep cool.
  • Due to the different models with different firmnesses, there’s a WinkBed for every sleeping position. We recommend that side sleepers choose the Softer, back sleepers choose the Luxury Firm, and stomach sleepers choose the Firmer. There’s also the WinkBed Plus, which was built specifically for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. But note that it costs more than the other models.
  • The WinkBed has a bouncy and responsive feel that should appeal to combination sleepers who need to switch sleeping positions at night.

Cons of the WinkBed Mattress

  • If you’re a fan of memory foam, then the WinkBed may not be the mattress for you. It doesn’t offer a ton of contouring or sinkage.

The Leesa Reserve is a luxury hybrid mattress with an uber-soft feel that’s sure to swaddle you in its foam layers. Side sleepers reign supreme on this bed. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“After taking turns laying on the Leesa Reserve, Nichole and I saw the temperature go up less than 9 degrees, meaning it should keep most sleepers cool at night.” – Kenny Timper, staff writer

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is the most advanced version of the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress, meaning it has enhanced pressure relief and body contouring. The Leesa Reserve is a great alternative that lives up to the similar luxury standard of support, comfort, and versatility.

The Reserve is a hybrid mattress, offering the best of foam and coils in one bed and making it more suitable for most sleeping patterns. Furthermore, Leesa offers the Reserve bed in three different firmness options, allowing the consumer more choices in choosing the precise fit. Moreover, fans of memory foam beds who tend to feel warm on them can appreciate the cooling foam layers of the Reserve and its massive innerspring layer of over 1,000 encased coils that help stimulate airflow throughout the construction. When testing out the Reserve’s cooling features, our testers were impressed, giving the Reserve a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 for its temperature regulation.

In addition to cooling, the Reserve had strong edge support, scoring a 4 out of 5 for the category by our testers. This means the Leesa Reserve could be a quality choice for people struggling with mobility issues when getting in and out of bed and couples sharing the mattress.

What our tester says: After taking turns laying on the Leesa Reserve, Nichole and I saw the temperature go up less than 9 degrees, meaning it should keep most sleepers cool at night.– Kenny Timper, staff writer

What Customers Say

The Leesa Reserve only had two reviews on its official website, resulting in a 5 out of 5 score. One verified buyer who shared the mattress and was pleased with their purchase wrote: “Life-changing sleep. So supportive. We wake up feeling refreshed. Goodbye aches and pains!”

Pros of the Leesa Reserve Mattress

  • It’s a good option for hot sleepers who like memory foam.
  • Multiple firmness options allow for more precise customization.
  • Leesa offers free no-contact delivery with your purchase of the Reserve.

Cons of the Leesa Reserve Mattress

  • When testing the Reserve, testers found subpar motion isolation. Couples struggling to sleep next to each other at night due to disruptive movements should consider a different option from our list of the best mattresses for couples.
  • As a new luxury option, the Leesa Reserve is a very expensive mattress, and probably isn’t the best choice for anyone on a budget.

Enjoy zoned support for targeted relief, an “on top of” feel allowing for ease of movement, and cooling features throughout. For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I’d recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for most back and stomach sleepers.I think these sleepers will get the needed pressure relief and contouring around the lower back and hips. This mattress does a wonderful job at offering body contouring while still helping the sleeper stay elevated and lifted as well. The layers of foam should provide comfort while the coil system should offer lots of support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze is considered one of Tempur-Pedic’s more luxurious beds. This mattress comes in three versions: a medium hybrid, an all-foam soft, and a firm model. However, we are comparing the Bear Elite Hybrid to the all-foam soft version of this bed. The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze provides increased pressure relief and advanced cooling technology, so it is great for side sleepers, hot sleepers, and couples that have double the body heat in their bed.

In comparison, the Bear Elite Hybrid is also the Bear brand’s “ultra-luxurious” model, and it also comes in three different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm. The Bear Elite Hybrid scored a 6 on the firmness scale, so it is slightly softer than the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress. This also makes the Bear Elite Hybrid best for side sleepers and those looking for more pressure relief from their bed. However, the Bear Elite Hybrid is, obviously, a hybrid bed, so it does include coils in its construction. This adds some extra breathability and airflow to this bed, allowing it to mimic the cooling abilities of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze.

What our tester says: “I tested out the middle level (Medium) and I think it’s great that each sleeper can pick what option works best for them. That being said, I thought the Medium worked great for both back and side sleeping. It’s also responsive enough to move around on easily and super cooling for my fellow hot sleepers out there.” Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

Many customers on the Bear website praise the Bear Elite Hybrid for its ability to relieve pressure. These users state that they no longer wake up with pain in their hips or shoulders, which is an added plus for side sleepers.

Pros of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

  • Back sleepers should find that the Bear Elite Hybrid keeps their back aligned while they are sleeping, thanks to its balance of support and pressure relief. These sleepers could also opt for the Firm model of this bed if they want extra support for their lumbar region.
  • Combination sleepers should appreciate the Bear Elite Hybrid because the coils in its base layer make it is easy to move around on. Because of this, combo sleepers should be able to switch their sleeping position easily throughout the night.
  • Sleepers with shoulder pain should appreciate the top foam layer included on the Bear Elite Hybrid. This comfort layer offers pressure relief to those experiencing pain in this area and brings immediate comfort and body contouring.

Cons of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

  • Stomach sleepers may not be the best customer for the Bear Elite Hybrid because of how soft this mattress truly is. These sleepers might want a firmer mattress that can lift their hips in line with their shoulders, like one of the beds included on our roundup of the best firm mattresses.

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-Adapt has a medium-firm feel, and you can replicate it with the Nolah Evolution, which is a luxury hybrid available in multiple firmness options. We tested out the Luxury Firm model and found it to be a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale — the industry standard for medium firm.

Notably, people struggling with chronic hip or back pain can benefit from the Evolution’s zoned support design, with the bed’s supportive foam and responsive coiled layers built out to offer firmer support where it’s needed and softer cushioning where it’s needed. Couples should also enjoy the Nolah, as our testers scored it 4.5 out of 5 on edge support and motion isolation.

One other positive trait we should mention when comparing the Nolah Evolution to the TEMPUR-Adapt is cost. A queen-size model is only $1,624 before discounts, compared to the TEMPUR-Adapt’s price tag of $2,199.

What our tester says:Although memory foam mattresses are typically known for trapping heat, I think the cooling technology inside the Nolah Evolution should help it sleep cool and make it a good bed for hot sleepers.Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

The Nolah Evolution has thousands of reviews on its official website, resulting in an impressive 4.9 out of 5 score. One verified buyer wrote: “This mattress was perfect. It’s just the right amount of plush.”

Pros of the Nolah Evolution Mattress

  • Buyers of the Evolution can expect a generous lifetime warranty, a 120-night sleep trial, and free delivery.
  • We found it to be an effective cooling option. Our tester wrote, “The first layer contains ArcticTex fibers, which are cooling and breathable. The second layer is an adapted version of the original Nolah AirFoam. It’s made of AirFoamICE, which infuses graphite into the foam to provide even more cooling.”
  • The Nolah Evolution is manufactured in the USA.

Cons of the Nolah Evolution Mattress

  • Stomach sleepers will probably want a firmer and more supportive mattress, although they may be comfortable on the Firm model of the Nolah Evolution.

The Brookyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s more high-end mattresses. It’s got a ton of cooling features in it that can help hot sleepers sleep cool all night. It’s also available in three different firmnesses, so it can accommodate all of the sleeping positions. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“First and foremost, I’d recommend this mattress to hot sleepers. This bed sleeps nice and cool thanks to special phase change technology and gel infusions. The Aurora Luxe is also a nice pick for back sleepers. This mattress in the Medium model is medium-soft, so it should contour the hips while also lifting them into alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

The TEMPUR-ProBreeze has slightly less pressure-relieving capabilities than the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, but it still includes the additional cooling technologies that make this mattress a great pick for hot sleepers and couples alike. In comparison, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe includes phase change technology, gel infusions in its foam layers, and coils in its base layer, so it also sleeps fairly cool. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe scored a 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale, which means it’s the industry standard for medium firm, and could work well for side sleepers and back sleepers who prefer a balance of comfort and support.

In terms of price, a queen sized Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe costs around $1,199, while a queen sized TEMPUR-ProBreeze costs around $4,599. Because of this, the Aurora Luxe is definitely the more budget-conscious option for the same cooling abilities and pressure relief.

What our tester says: “I also appreciate how soft and cuddly this bed is. It feels similar to a lot of luxury hybrids on the market right now, but is a little cheaper than these beds. Back sleepers should enjoy a balanced feel that promotes spinal alignment and maximum comfort. Most side sleepers should appreciate the pressure-relieving sinkage this mattress offers in the Soft model. I also love how it comes in three different firmness models.” Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

Customers on the Brooklyn Bedding website often comment on how cooling the Aurora Luxe really is. One customer even compared this mattress to their previous Tempur-Pedic and stated that the Aurora Luxe is cooler than their last bed.

Pros of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Mattress

  • The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe has strong responsiveness and bounce, making it a good choice for combination sleepers who need to switch positions without “sinking” into the top layers of their mattress
  • Couples should also be able to sleep comfortably on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, as this mattress has strong edge support that should allow these sleepers to use the full surface area of their mattress without worrying about sagging near the sides.
  • As we stated earlier, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is full of cooling technology. This bed includes a cooling cover, gel infused foams, and pocketed coils, so hot sleepers should be able to sleep through the night without problem.

Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Mattress

  • Heavier folks probably won’t get enough support from the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, as this mattress did score a 6 on the firmness scale. Instead, these sleepers can check out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people.

What is a Tempur-Pedic Alternative?

The Tempur-Pedic brand rose to fame mainly because of the specific memory foam that they use to construct their all-foam beds. This material is called Tempur foam, and it was actually originally created by NASA to be used in seats intended for flights. This Tempur foam helps to absorb shock waves, while still providing additional comfort. It’s extremely dense, slow to respond to pressure and movement, and its pressure-relieving capabilities are top notch.

However, because of how well-known Tempur-Pedic is by customers and mattress experts alike, true Tempur-Pedic mattresses have become extremely expensive, with some of their beds costing up to $5,599. So, we compiled this list of eight mattresses that have the same dense foams, slow response to pressure, and pressure-relieving abilities, but with a more budget-friendly price.

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud.

How We Picked The Best Tempur-Pedic Alternatives

You might be wondering how we decided on these eight beds as the best Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives. Well, the first thing we looked for were beds that scored very well on our pressure map test. One of the main highlights of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses is that they do a strong job of alleviate tension around areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back, which is great for sleepers who suffer with joint pain or pressure in these places. Using our pressure map test, we were able to determine which of our mattresses also did a good job of alleviating pressure in these areas.

Tempur-Pedic beds are also very well-known for their plush, body-contouring feel, thanks to the multiple layers of foam included in these mattresses. While some of the beds on this list are hybrids (meaning they include coils in their construction instead of all-foam layers), all of them scored a 7 or below on the firmness scale, or are available in a softer model. This makes sure that they have that initial sinkage and comforting feel upon laying down on them. The Tempur foam also does a strong job of preventing motion from traveling across the surface of the bed, so we made sure to pick mattresses that also scored low on our motion transfer test. This is especially helpful for couples or anyone who sleeps with a pet.

Finally, we looked for beds that were as similar to the Tempur-Pedic as possible, while still being budget-friendly for our more cost-conscious shoppers. These beds range between $1,099 and $2,849, so customers can pick the mattress that best works for their budget.

Things to Look for in Alternatives to Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

These are certain aspects of Tempur-Pedic mattresses — and Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives — that are better for some sleepers over others. Below, I’ll outline some specifics of these Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives and give you some information on who these types of beds might work best for.

Sleeping Position

Sleepopolis prioritize testing each mattress in every sleeping position
Sleepopolis team testing mattresses in every sleeping position

Because of how soft some of these Tempur-Pedic alternatives are, they are going to work best for side sleepers, stomach sleepers and back sleepers who prefer a softer feel to their bed. Even though some of these beds are hybrid mattresses that include coils in their construction — which usually adds some durability and stability to the bed — none of them scored above a 7 on the firmness scale. Usually, stomach sleepers need a much firmer mattress to keep their hips lifted in line with their shoulders, promoting a healthy spinal alignment, so these alternatives are probably not going to be the best for them. However, the plush feel and incredible pressure-relieving capabilities of these mattresses make them great choices for side sleepers, back sleepers, and anyone who suffers with joint pain.

Firmness

When testing mattresses, we test firmness on a firmness scale from 1-10.
Sleepopolis Firmness Scale

As I stated above, Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known for their plush, body-contouring feel, and these alternatives are no different. None of these beds scored above a 7 on the firmness scale, which means that all of them have a medium-firm, medium-soft, or soft feel to them. Because of this, I don’t recommend that stomach sleepers or heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds) opt for one of these alternatives. Instead, I would guide them to our roundup of the best firm mattresses.

When we test mattresses, our expert testers, lay on each bed in every sleeping position and place the mattress on our firmness scale which ranges from 1-10. 1 being the softest mattress we have ever tested and 10 being the firmest. Keep in a mind a true medium-firm mattress is considered a 6.5 on our scale.

Motion Isolation

The dense foams used in the construction of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses do a strong job of preventing movement from traveling across the surface of these beds. When we were testing for alternatives, we picked a majority of beds that scored high on our motion isolation test. This means that they were able to dissipate movement one from side of the mattress before it reached the other side. While there were some mattresses on this list that didn’t perform as well on this test, we made sure to outline this in our “cons” section of each review, so that couples who are looking for an especially low-motion mattress can find one that works.

Our motion isolation test involves our testers dropping steel balls on each mattress and using a seismograph to measure the amount of movement felt across the mattress. This is to symbolize how much movement you would feel if you, your partner, kids or pets move around attempting to disrupt your sleep. The larger the waves, the worse the mattress performed for motion isolation.

An example of the Sleepopolis Red Wine Test
A look at the Sleepopolis Seismograph test for motion isolation

Cooling

When it comes to cooling, the Tempur-Pedic brand knows what it’s doing — the TEMPUR in Tempur-Pedic actually stands for temperature. Because of this, we made sure to include hybrid mattresses, whose coils allow for added airflow and breathability, and all-foam beds that include gel infusions and other additional cooling technology in their layers. This makes sure that these Tempur-Pedic alternatives work just as well for hot sleepers and couples with double the body heat in their bed as an original Tempur-Pedic mattress would.

An example of our cooling test
Thermal Gun Cooling Test from the Studio

Because cooling is so crucial in any tempurpedic alternatives, when selecting which mattresses to include here, we made sure to keep our cooling tests in mind. When testing for cooling, we use a thermal gun to determine how long it takes for heat to dissipate through the mattress after our testers have laid on it for 10 minutes. We make sure to look at the mattress construction, keeping an eye out for gels, coils, covers and breathable materials which make great Tempurpedic Alternatives.

Price

As we’ve stated above, the Tempur-Pedic mattresses range from $1,999 for a queen-sized TEMPUR-Cloud to $5,599 for a queen-sized TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze. For the majority of customers, these beds may be out of their price range. Because of this, we included beds in this roundup that cost as low as $1,099 to make sure that customers are able to find a Tempur-Pedic alternative that not only works for their sleeping position but also for their wallet. You can also check out our best mattresses under $1,000 to continue to look for budget friendly beds.

Edge Support

Edge support in a mattress refers to how well the mattress maintains its shape and firmness along the edges when you sit or lay on it. Good edge support prevents sagging and provides a stable surface for sitting or sleeping near the perimeter. Edge support is most crucial for individuals who frequently sit or sleep near the edge of the mattress, as it helps maintain stability and prevents excessive sagging.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses generally offer moderate to good edge support. They use high-density memory foam, which contours to the body but can sometimes compress more around the edges compared to traditional innerspring or hybrid mattresses with reinforced perimeters. When looking at tempurpedic alternatives, prioritize mattresses with reinforced edges, such as those with innerspring coils, hybrid constructions, or additional foam layers designed to enhance perimeter stability.

Durability of Tempurpedic Alternatives Beds

When evaluating durability in Tempur-Pedic alternatives, prioritize high-density foam or robust innerspring and hybrid constructions for long-lasting support. Check for reinforced edges and multiple supportive layers as they contribute to the mattress’s longevity. A longer warranty period can indicate a manufacturer’s confidence in the mattress’s durability. We suggest only looking at mattresses with a 8+ year warranty policy and a 30+ day sleep trials to trust the quality of the bed.

Tempurpedic Warranty vs Alternatives

Tempur-Pedic mattresses typically come with a 10-year warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship, offering a solid guarantee of their longevity. Alternatives may vary widely in warranty, with some brands providing similar 10-year coverage while others offer shorter or more limited warranties. We recommend looking at warranties over 8 years to maximize longevity.

Pros of Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

So, what are the best parts of a Tempur-Pedic mattress? Below, we’ll outline our pros of buying a Tempur-Pedic mattress or a Tempur-Pedic alternative.

  • The dense foams used in Tempur-Pedic mattresses excel at relieving pressure around sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. This is helpful for sleepers that suffer with pain in these places.
  • These foams also help alleviate motion transfer across the surface of the mattress. This is an added plus for couples who don’t want to be woken up by their restless partner during the night.
  • The Tempur-Pedic mattresses are also known for their cooling abilities. The Tempur-Pedic alternatives on this list are all either hybrid beds with breathable coils in their construction of all-foam beds that include gel infusions throughout their layers, helping to keep hot sleepers from overheating.

Cons of Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

Despite the many benefits of Tempur-Pedic mattresses and Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives, every bed is going to come with some downfalls. Below, I’ll outline some of the cons of the Tempur-Pedic alternatives included on this list.

  • Because of how soft these mattresses are, they are not going to be sturdy enough for stomach sleepers or heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds). These sleepers usually need a firmer mattress that is sturdy enough to keep them lifted up during the night and durable enough to last the test of time.
  • Because many of these beds only include foam layers in their construction, they might not have the bounce or responsiveness that most combination sleepers are looking for. These sleepers need to be able to move around and switch positions easily during the night without “sinking” into their bed. For this, we would recommend checking out one of the mattresses on our roundup of the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Health Benefits of Tempur-Pedic Mattress Alternatives

Tempur-Pedic mattresses can offer several health benefits, including improved spinal alignment and pressure relief due to their adaptive memory foam, which can reduce back pain and enhance overall sleep quality. Additionally, their motion isolation helps minimize disturbances from a partner’s movements, contributing to a more restful sleep experience.

FAQs

Are Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives worth it?

Many people love Tempur-Pedic mattresses because of their soft foams that create a plush, body-contouring feel that is comfortable for a variety of sleepers. However, these beds can get quite pricy, so budget-conscious shoppers might find that these Tempur-Pedic alternatives are a better option for their price point.

The Tempur-Pedic brand also charges for returns, and they only offer a 90-night sleep trial for their mattresses. In comparison, many of the brands included in this roundup offer 365-night sleep trials, lifetime warranties, and no charge on mattress returns. This is helpful for sleepers who aren’t quite sure what they want and need a little bit longer to try out and find the mattress that works best for them.

What brands are similar to Tempur-Pedic?

Obviously, the brands included in this roundup are the ones that we found to be the closest to the original Tempur-Pedic mattresses. However, some other mattresses that fit the bill include the Helix Dawn (which is a bit firmer for stomach sleepers), the WinkBeds GravityLux (which is especially helpful for back pain), and the Loom & Leaf (which is more responsive for combination sleepers).

What should I look for in a Tempur-Pedic alternative?

If you’re looking to find a mattress that’s as similar to a Tempur-Pedic bed as possible, your main considerations will probably be pressure relief, cooling, and a softer feel. The original Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made entirely of foam, so they have a well-known plush feel to them. The Tempur foam is also helpful for pressure relief around the hips, shoulders, and lower back, and it does a strong job of eliminating motion transfer across the surface of these beds. Plus, Tempur-Pedic mattresses sleep very cool, so alternatives to these mattresses should either have coils included in their base layer or gel infusion in their foam layers to make sure that hot sleepers stay cool throughout the night.

How We Chose These Mattresses

Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches has reviewed more than 300 products in our mattress lab, running each one through tests such as pressure-mapping and measuring motion transfer with a seismometer. From there, we give every bed an overall score based on materials, comfort, support, cooling, and edge support. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.

For the Best Tempur-Pedic Alternatives roundup, we started with looking at the unique characteristics of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses, and then found more budget-friendly mattresses that embodied these same qualities. Most Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known for their cooling technology, advanced pressure relief, and overall soft, plush feel. So, we made sure to include other mattress options that embodied these same traits. We paid special attention to these beds’ motion transfer score, pressure map test score, and rating on the firmness scale to make sure that they were similar to the original Tempur-Pedic mattresses.
