Whether you’re looking for groceries, electronics, or an inexpensive hot dog combo, there are few better places to find a deal than Costco. The wholesale retailer also offers a handful of high-quality mattresses at an affordable price. If it’s time to replace your old mattress and you’re thinking of dusting off the old membership to buy a new bed, this guide is for you.
Here, you’ll find our favorite Costco mattresses based on cooling, support, pressure relief, and other factors. And don’t worry if you don’t have a membership — we’ve also included an alternative for each of our picks to help out our friends who don’t have a Costco nearby.
It’s an area we have a lot of experience in. Our team of mattress experts and certified sleep science coaches has reviewed more than 330 mattresses using our thorough testing methodology to help shoppers find a better night’s sleep. In 2024 alone, we helped 15,622 sleepers (and 60,108 since we started in 2014) find the mattress of their dreams.
To find the best Costco mattress, we teamed up with Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, to evaluate what to look for, and Chaunie Brusie, RN, BSN, to review all of the content in this guide from a medical perspective.

What I Looked for in the Best Costco Mattresses
When my fellow mattress testers and I created this list of the best Costco mattresses and alternatives, we focused on factors like support, cooling, and pressure relief to find options that fit all kinds of sleepers. I also considered price to help budget shoppers who aren’t Costco members find a good deal on a great mattress. Here’s more about how we evaluated these mattresses.
Edge Support: Edge support refers to how well the perimeter of a mattress holds up under pressure. We test edge support to ensure the edges are as supportive as the center. Sturdy edge support is key for making the entire surface of the mattress usable without feeling unstable. To assess edge support, we conduct a series of tests that includes measuring sinkage with varying weights, sitting on the edge to check for stability, and lying on the edge in different sleeping positions to determine comfort level.
Pressure Relief: Effective pressure relief is important for side sleepers and back sleepers with back pain, as these folks typically experience more pressure buildup around sensitive areas. We use a pressure map test to measure a mattress’s ability to relieve pressure and pain. The map tells us the average PSI and gives us a digital thermal reading of where pressure is building up on our bodies. We’ve found that the average PSIs for back and side sleepers are 15.1 and 12.6, respectively. If the PSI is lower than the average, that usually indicates that the mattress is less prone to pressure buildup in those positions.
Cooling: Cooling is essential for hot sleepers and people who share a bed with a partner (or pet). When reviewing the cooling capabilities of a mattress, we first look at its construction for materials like cooling covers, cooling gel memory foam, and innerspring coils to facilitate airflow. To test cooling, we use a thermal gun to take a surface reading of the mattress’s temperature before and after we’ve lain on it for five minutes. We find that mattresses heat up by an average of 7.14 degrees during this test, which tells us that mattresses that increase by fewer degrees are good at cooling.
Costco may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of luxury mattresses, but the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress may change that. This bed is a hybrid made with foam and coils, as well as premier features like a moisture-wicking Tencel cover and reinforced edge support for extra durability — but at a price tag at nearly half the cost of other luxury mattresses. The brand says that this mattress has a medium firmness level, which is comfortable for many sleeping positions and preferences.

What Customers Say
Customers raved about the bed’s value and the comfortable blend of firmness and plush comfort that it offered. They also loved this bed’s edge support, stating that you can sleep on the entire surface of the mattress without worrying about slipping off the edge.
“I did way more research than one person should, but I have scoliosis and need a mattress that doesn’t exacerbate it. I also tend to sleep in all different positions, so I needed a mattress that would accommodate that as well. I had a budget in mind but was willing to exceed it if needed. I started exploring Costco thinking that if I needed to return the mattress, it would be hassle-free. After seeing the excellent reviews for this mattress, I decided to buy it. I’ve had it for about three weeks now and it’s truly been the best mattress I’ve ever had.”

Pros of the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Mattress
This mattress provides luxury on a budget. Mattresses with similar high-end features and cooling technology typically cost several hundred to thousands of dollars more than this budget-friendly mattress.
Customers with a wide variety of body types and sleeping preferences gave this bed five-star reviews, making it a versatile pick that suits most sleepers.
This bed provides great motion isolation, which is helpful for light sleepers or those who toss and turn at night. Sleepers can get in and out of bed without disturbing their partners, according to customer reviews.
Cons of the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Mattress
Customers noted that the bed is heavy and hard to move around, so you may need to have extra hands around if you need to move your mattress.
This bed is only available online, so you can’t pick it up from a warehouse.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Like the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress, the Saatva Classic mattress is a luxury mattress with innerspring coils and a plush Euro topper. Saatva uses materials like organic cotton and recycled steel, making this bed a good pick for eco-friendly shoppers. The Saatva Classic was an easy pick for an alternative to the best overall Costco mattress. During testing, I was blown away by how supportive and comfortable this mattress was and gave it a 4 out of 5 or higher in categories like edge support, cooling, and responsiveness.
Edge support was one category where I gave Saatva Classic a perfect 5 out of 5. I barely felt any sinkage when I sat and lay on the edge, and the mattress felt just as supportive along the sides as it did in the center. I think the Saatva is an excellent option for people with mobility issues who need reliable support to get in and out of bed.
“In our tape measure test, we recorded at most 3 inches of sinkage when lying on the Saatva’s edges,” said mattress tester Livvi DiCicco. “In my humble opinion, the Saatva Classic is a showstopper in this category.”
The Saatva Clasic mattress.
Livvi and I also gave the Saatva Classic a 4 out of 5 in the cooling category, thanks to its two layers of breathable innerspring coils. We used a thermal gun to measure the initial temperature of the Saatva’s surface, and then again after lying on it for 5 minutes, to see how much it heated. After 5 minutes of lying on it, we only saw the bed rise by 7.8 degrees, which is above average for cooling.
We also gave it another 5 out of 5 for responsiveness. More coils usually create more bounce, and that’s certainly the case for the Saatva Classic. This bounciness is great news for combination sleepers who frequently change positions at night. These sleepers should have no trouble maneuvering on the Saatva’s surface.
On the flip side, more bounce means weaker motion isolation. The Saatva Classic scored the lowest in this category, only earning a 2.8 out of 5. I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to couples because the two coil layers cause a lot of motion transfer. In other words, if you are sensitive to movement, I would avoid the Saatva because you will likely feel every move your partner or pet makes throughout the night.
“As someone who owns this mattress and sleeps on it every night, I’d have to agree with Kenny’s assessment,” said Livvi. “I don’t share my mattress with a partner, but whenever I allow friends or family to sleep over, I can feel every little twitch they make from the other side of the bed.”
I also wouldn’t recommend this mattress to folks with sensitive joints or strict side sleepers. These sleepers will likely need something softer, like an all-foam mattress, with more cushioning to get the deep contouring they need to cradle their sensitive pressure points.

If you’re in the market for a top-of-the-line mattress, the Beautyrest Silver may be the bed for you. This bed is built with four layers of foam for a plush and decadent sleeping experience. The soft comfort of the top layers is balanced out with a gel-infused lumbar support layer and a bouncy base of innerspring coils to keep your spine propped up in a healthy posture as you sleep. These cozy layers come wrapped in a cooling cover designed to keep you comfortable on warmer nights. This mattress is offered in queen, king, and California king sizes, and all of them are available for under $1,000.

What Customers Say
Customers were impressed by the pricepoint of this luxe mattress and say that the bed stayed cool to the touch overnight.
“During the Memorial Day sale Costco had this mattress for $500 less than a notable furniture chain. We are very glad we took a chance on it. Although it says “medium,” it is definitely a medium-firm mattress and really closer to the firmer side of the spectrum. But we tried it out at the furniture store and it’s exactly what we were looking for. After all, there are a wide variety of toppers out there to make a mattress softer. We’ve found we like it just the way it is, though. It sleeps cool and has a hotel feel.”

Pros of the Beautyrest Silver Mattress
Cooling technology keeps the bed at a comfortable temperature in all seasons.
This bed offers a complex construction with luxury features that don’t break the bank.
Customers note that this bed provides enough support for heavier body types.
Cons of the Beautyrest Silver Mattress
This bed’s medium-firm firmness level may be too stiff for some sleepers, such as those who sleep on their side.
Customers note that the bed takes a few weeks to break in.

Couples
This bed has great motion isolation, so you shouldn’t feel your partner tossing and turning at night.
Pros of the Helix Midnight
Back sleepers should get some cushioning in the lumbar region, and the coils will help keep their spines neutrally aligned.
Side sleepers should experience nice pressure relief and contouring at their shoulders and hips. For extra pressure relief, we recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe, the standard Helix Midnight’s luxury version.
The Helix Midnight has low motion transfer, which means partners aren’t likely to feel each other moving around at night.
The Midnight is a responsive mattress, so it’s ideal for combination sleepers.
You can return your bed after the 30-day “break-in” period and before the trial period ends for a full refund.
The Helix Midnight is amongst Helix’s line of six standard mattresses. It’s known for its more balanced feel, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. We also recommend it for couples, as it scored well on our motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling tests. For a plusher and more cooling version of this mattress, see the Helix Midnight Luxe. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“I would recommend this mattress for side or back sleepers because it’s supportive, without putting pressure on your joints.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The Helix Midnight is another luxury hybrid bed you can buy online. Similar to the Beautyrest Silver, the Helix Midnight mattress features a zoned support layer to support healthy posture and an extra pillow-top layer to create a super-plush sleeping surface. Our mattress testers gave the Helix Midnight a strong 4 out of 5 for motion transfer and back pressure relief, which are hallmarks of a great luxury mattress.
Couples and folks who sleep with their wiggly pets will love the Helix Midnight for its strong motion isolation. Our testers praised the Midnight’s ability to reduce motion transfer from one side of the mattress to the other, noting that when one tester moved around on the other side of the bed, they did not feel a disturbance on their side.
“I could feel the movement, but it was very minimal,” said mattress tester Dan Caffrey. “I don’t think it’s enough to wake up someone who’s a light sleeper.”
The Helix Midnight mattress in our Sleepopolis studio.
The Helix Midnight is also great for folks who suffer from back pain. Our mattress testers gave this mattress a 4 out of 5 for back pressure relief because of its excellent results on our pressure map test, where we use a specialized mat to measure a mattress’s ability to relieve pressure and pain. For reference, the average PSI for back sleepers is 15.1, and our mattress testers across all three weight categories had a lower PSI than the average on the Helix Midnight. In other words, back sleepers of all shapes and sizes should have no trouble sleeping on this mattress.
“I can feel the foam molding to my lower back,” said our lightweight mattress tester Asha Birjah. “This mattress is actually really comfortable and supportive.”
While the Helix Midnight is a big win for back sleepers, side sleepers may want to look elsewhere. All of our testers had a higher-than-average PSI while lying on their sides on this mattress, indicating that side sleepers might experience more pressure buildup on the Midnight. I would recommend a memory foam mattress with more cushioning for these sleepers.
Another area where the Helix Midnight falls short is cooling. Our mattress testers gave the Helix Midnight a 3.5 out of 5, which is still slightly above average, but I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to extra hot sleepers. Hot sleepers would probably fare better on something with more advanced temperature regulation features, like one of our best cooling mattress picks.
Have a good feeling about the Helix Midnight? Read our full Helix Midnight mattress review to see how it performed on all our tests. If you’re a side sleeper looking for a luxurious sleeping experience, I recommend the Nectar Luxe.
The TEMPUR-Contour is made of TEMPUR’s uniquely formulated foam, which is beloved for its contouring and pressure-relieving feel. The brand says that the foam is designed to respond to your body’s shape and movement throughout the night, so you get contouring without feeling stuck in indentations. Customers note that this bed cradles the curves of their body while still providing enough support to prevent sinkage. The TEMPUR-Contour also features a removable cover that you can easily toss in the washing machine.

What Customers Say
Customers love how this mattress helps keep their back and shoulders in a healthy posture throughout the night and provides pain relief to tender areas. Reviews also note that this bed is firmer and cooler than typical foam mattresses.
“While searching to replace our decades old Split King Tempur-Pedic mattresses with bases, we saw the sale at Costco. After talking with the Costco rep, we learned that the mattresses were comparable to Tempur-Pedic’s Adapt. So we went to a local mattresses store to try out the Adapt versions and decided to buy Costco’s Medium Hybrid with Ergo Adjustable Base. The delivery and setup were fine, and we have slept soundly on our choice for the last month.”

Pros of the WinkBed
Back sleepers should get the support they need
It has a traditional, supportive feel
The WinkBed has cooling capabilities to help people who sleep hot
Sturdy edge support and good motion isolation make this a good choice for couples
The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The WinkBed mattress also offers superior pressure relief, but unlike the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Contour Supreme, it’s a hybrid mattress. So, it incorporates coils into its construction, offering enhanced support that many memory foam mattresses lack. Our testers gave the original Luxury Firm WinkBed a 4 out of 5 or higher in pressure relief, cooling, and edge support.
Pressure relief is particularly important for side sleepers and folks with back pain. These sleepers typically need more cushioning to get the deep contouring they need around those high-pressure areas. The WinkBed showed excellent results on our pressure map test in the back- and side-sleeping positions, showing mostly blue with only a few areas of light green. Our testers gave it a 4.5 out of 5 for pressure relief overall, meaning the WinkBed should be a solid option for most sleepers.
“The WinkBed is an especially good fit for sleepers with back pain, with the map almost entirely blue,” said mattress tester Nichole Mondshein. “This indicates low pressure and even weight distribution, which is essential for avoiding soreness in the upper or lower back.”
The WinkBed mattress in our Sleepopolis studio.
That said, our testers saw the most pressure buildup around the shoulders and hips in the side-sleeping position. While this shouldn’t be an issue for most side sleepers, I would recommend a softer mattress to folks who already experience pain in these areas.
The WinkBed also scored a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 in the cooling category. The WinkBed has an extra-tall layer of pocketed coils, which facilitates better ventilation, and a naturally cooling Tencel cover to give sleepers that cool-to-the-touch feel as soon as they lie down. Our mattress testers were impressed after using a temperature gun to measure the surface temperature of the WinkBed before and after lying on it.
“After 5 minutes of lying on the WinkBed, it only increased by 7 degrees, which is a pretty good result,” explained Nichole. “This indicates that the WinkBed offers good temperature regulation.”
Nichole also gave the WinkBed’s edge support a good — but not exceptional — 4 out of 5. When sitting on the mattress, she saw minor sinkage. However, when she sat on the very edge of the bed, she felt like she was going to slip off. Based on her experience, I think this is a good mattress for people who want to spread out and use the entire surface area of the bed, but I wouldn’t recommend it to folks with limited mobility.
Memory foam can tend to trap heat, but the Sleep Science Bamboo Cool mattress is formulated with cooling technology so you can cuddle up in an all foam bed while keeping night sweats at bay. The bed is topped with a layer of charcoal-infused memory foam that the brand says helps eliminate moisture and odor as you sleep. Underneath, there is a layer of foam infused with cooling gel beads to help move heat away from your body.
The Sleep Science Bamboo Cool mattress also comes with a unique patented wedge-shaped edge support layer that the brand says both extends the life of your mattress and increases the sleep surface by 20 percent. All of these layers come wrapped in a hypoallergenic and antimicrobial washable cover to help stave off allergies.
What Customers Say
Customers say that this mattress not only sleeps cool, but provides a soft memory foam feel with enough support to sleep with a healthy spine alignment throughout the night. Several reviewers were also impressed with the bed’s edge support.
“Excellent mattress for a stomach sleeper. Sides do not sag at all. When I unrolled it, there was a faint chemical smell, but it went away within 24 hours of letting it air out. The cooling feature is barely noticeable but the mattress doesn’t sleep hot. I was able to get a good night’s rest from day one which is amazing. Firm but very comfortable for me. If you’re hesitating as to whether or not to get a firm mattress, keep in mind that you can always soften up a firm mattress with a topper but you can never firm up a soft mattress. And all mattresses will eventually break in and get softer over time so it’s all down hill from here. I’d definitely buy this one again.”

Many customers cite that they experienced minimal off-gassing when they unboxed their new mattress.

Sleepers who prefer a soft mattress may find this bed too firm, according to customer reviews.

The Brookyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s more high-end mattresses. It’s got a ton of cooling features in it that can help hot sleepers sleep cool all night. It’s also available in three different firmnesses, so it can accommodate all of the sleeping positions. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“First and foremost, I’d recommend this mattress to hot sleepers. This bed sleeps nice and cool thanks to special phase change technology and gel infusions. The Aurora Luxe is also a nice pick for back sleepers. This mattress in the Medium model is medium-soft, so it should contour the hips while also lifting them into alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is a hybrid, bed-in-a-box mattress with cooling technology integrated into every layer. The cover layer features phase change material, a textile designed to move body heat away from the bed, and the bed uses copper and gel memory foam to keep you cool while providing cushioning comfort. Our mattress testers gave it strong scores across the board, including a 4.5 out of 5 or higher in categories like cooling, edge support, and motion isolation.
Brooklyn Bedding has made cooling the focal point of the Aurora Luxe, and it shows. Our mattress testers gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 in the cooling category because of its impressive results on the thermal gun test, where we use a thermal device to measure the temperature of the mattress surface before and after lying on it for 5 minutes. The Aurora Luxe’s temperature only increased by 4 degrees, which is one of the most impressive results we’ve seen from a mattress yet.
“It didn’t noticeably heat up at all while I was lying on it,” said mattress tester Sosha Lewis. “The Aurora Luxe felt very cool to the touch throughout.”
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress in our Sleepopolis studio.
Our testers also gave the Aurora Luxe a 4.5 out of 5 for edge support. We test edge support to determine whether or not you can lie all the way on the side of your mattress and still feel supported. Our mattress testers gave it a near-perfect score because they felt supported while sitting and lying on the perimeter of the mattress, noticing very little sinkage while doing so.
“The Aurora Luxe’s edge support is great when lying on your side or sitting down,” said Sosha. “I felt very secure on the bed’s perimeter overall. I think this is a great mattress for couples who use the entire bed.”
Motion isolation is another area where the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe excels. Our mattress testers placed a container full of water on one side of the mattress to see how much it would ripple while they tossed and turned on the other side. After a few minutes of getting in and out of bed and changing between sleeping positions, they noticed minimal movement in the container. Based on these test results, folks easily disturbed by their partner’s movements shouldn’t have any trouble sleeping through the night on the Aurora Luxe.
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a high-performing mattress, earning a score of 4.41 overall, but it isn’t perfect. I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to strict side sleepers or folks with sensitive joints, as it doesn’t offer enough cushioning or contouring. Our testers also found it a little noisy when moving around and sitting on the mattress — not enough to be disruptive to sleep, but still something to be aware of.

The side-sleeping position can put extra stress on your hips and shoulders as you sleep. The best mattress for side sleepers provides extra cushioning around these tender areas without allowing your midsection to sink into the bed. The Leesa Legend is built with two layers of plush contouring foam to cradle your joints when you lay on your side, while the bed’s microcoil core keeps your spine propped up in a healthy posture.

What Customers Say
Customers say that this bed helps them wake up pain-free in the side-sleeping position, but is also comfortable for back and stomach sleepers. They were also impressed by the quality and durability of the Leesa Legend mattress.
“First time getting a mattress in a box and I’m very pleased with this one. Definitely on the softer side, wouldn’t really call it medium firm at all. But personally I was looking for a softer mattress as a side sleeper, so this has been perfect. Zoned support is nice; great cushioning, nice bounce, and the ache in my lower back at night completely gone!! Edge support is less than I had on my previous non-box mattress, but it hasn’t bothered me yet. “

Pros of the Leesa Legend Mattress
The Leesa Legend is built with luxurious materials like merino wool and organic cotton at a Costco price.
The bed’s soft layers provide relief to customers who suffer from back or joint pain, according to reviews.
Ventilation from the microcoil layer helps this foam bed sleep cool.
Cons of the Leesa Legend Mattress
The Leesa Legend may not provide enough support for larger body types.
The soft feel of the Leesa Legend means it isn’t a great pick for most stomach sleepers.

The Bear Star Hybrid is a softer hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring coils. It offers pressure relief, contouring, and solid support for many sleeper types, but especially back, side, and combination sleepers. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy. I loved how plush the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt comfortable and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
Like the Leesa Legend, most side sleepers should love the Bear Star Hybrid. Side sleepers who prefer a firmer hybrid mattress for better spinal alignment will appreciate the balance of comforting memory foam and sturdy support from the innerspring coils. And because of the Bear Star Hybrid’s strong edge support, they’ll get the same balanced support throughout the entire mattress. After testing this mattress, I gave the Bear Star Hybrid a 5 out of 5 in responsiveness and edge support. I also think this bed is a top contender for combination sleepers, couples who use the entire surface area of their mattress, and folks with mobility issues.
One of the first things that stood out while testing the Bear Star Hybrid was its responsiveness. I appreciated how easy it was to maneuver on the mattress and switch between different sleeping positions. This makes the Bear Star Hybrid a good option for combination sleepers who frequently change positions at night. These sleepers should be able to freely move around on this mattress without feeling “stuck.”
My fellow mattress tester, Livvi DiCicco, agreed with me, saying, “It felt super easy to roll around and switch between different sleeping positions on this mattress.”
The Bear Star Hybrid mattress in the Sleepopolis studio.
The Bear Star Hybrid earned another perfect 5 out of 5 in the edge support category. Edge support is important for sleepers and couples who use the entire surface area of the bed, as it gives them more room to move around without feeling like they might roll to the floor. Sturdy edge support is also essential for folks with limited mobility who need a strong perimeter to bear down on when getting up in the morning.
During testing, I never felt like we were slipping off the edge of the bed. When sitting on the edges and corners of the Bear Star Hybrid, I could hardly detect any sinkage beneath me.
“I noticed a little bit of sinkage, but not like I was going to slide off,” agreed Livvi. “I was able to sit pretty close to the edge before I noticed any sinkage, but even then, it wasn’t too apparent.”
Overall, I think the Bear Star Hybrid is great for combination sleepers, people with limited mobility, and couples who gravitate toward the edge of the bed. However, I wouldn’t recommend it to people who are easily disturbed by their partner’s movement or folks with joint or back pain. The Bear Star Hybrid only scored 3.67 out of 5 for motion isolation and 3 out of 5 for pressure relief. Instead, I would recommend one of our best memory foam mattresses to these sleepers, as they typically offer better contouring and isolate motion more effectively.

Hybrid mattresses — essentially beds made with more than one type of material — have a complex construction that typically makes them more expensive than mattresses made just of foam. The Simply Modern mattress is an exception that doesn’t sacrifice quality for a budget-friendly price. Built with three layers of foam and a support layer of innerspring coils, this bed provides the bouncy feel of an innerspring bed with plush memory foam pressure relief at a much lower price point than other leading national brands.
What Customers Say
Customers say that this mattress performs just as well or better than more expensive name-brand mattresses. They also said that the top foam layer is soft and cozy, but kept them comfortably supported on top of the mattress without sinking.
“We purchased a much more expensive hybrid foam mattress before we purchased this mattress from Costco. The more expensive mattress did not keep up cool and it felt like we were sleeping on a waffle, so we returned it. Since the expensive mattress didn’t work out, we decided to try a more reasonably priced mattress to see how it would work out. WELL…it worked out great! First, the mattress is pretty firm which is great for us. Second, it actually kept us cool. I have not awakened with a damp shirt since we purchased the mattress. The cost and quality make it well worth a try. The one caution I do have is that the mattress did have an off gassing smell for the first 4 nights. Other than that I highly recommend this mattress.”

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. What our tester says:
“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
The Nolah Evolution mattress is a hybrid mattress with two cooling layers of foam, including a comfort layer infused with graphite and a core base of innerspring coils. The Evolution also includes a layer of high-resilience foam that mimics the supportive and bouncy feel of latex in the center of the bed. As far as hybrid mattresses go, it doesn’t get much better than this. Our mattress testers gave the Nolah Evolution a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 in cooling and edge support.
When people ask me to recommend a good cooling mattress, I usually point them toward hybrid models. Hybrid beds are naturally better at cooling, thanks to their innerspring coils, and the Nolah Evolution is no exception. Along with coils to promote better airflow, the Evolution has other features, like a breathable organic cotton cover and memory foam layers with cooling fibers to help keep things chill as you sleep. Our testers found the Nolah Evolution cool to the touch and incredibly comfortable, so they awarded it a 4.5 out of 5 in this category.
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid in the Sleepopolis studio.
“The organic cotton was cool to the touch. I had worked out right before we started testing and my temperature hadn’t regulated,” said mattress tester Sosha Lewis. “I could feel the heat leaving my body as I was on the Nolah. I found it incredibly comfortable.”
Edge support is another tell-tale sign of a high-quality hybrid mattress. Our testers found that the Nolah Evolution is just as strong and sturdy at the perimeter as it is in the center. Based on their experience, I think the Evolution will be a great buy for couples who like to spread out, heavier people who want to avoid premature sagging, and those who love using the entire surface of the bed.
“The Nolah Evolution has solid edge support,” added mattress tester Bridget Chapman. “I felt just as supported on the sides of the bed as I did in the middle, so I could really stretch out and use the whole mattress.”
The Nolah Evolution has very few weaknesses, but I wouldn’t recommend it to stomach sleepers. In my opinion, this mattress isn’t firm enough to keep a stomach sleeper’s spine in neutral alignment. I also wouldn’t recommend the Evolution to folks looking for a budget mattress, as this mattress is a little pricey compared to other beds in its class.

If you suffer from back pain, you need a bed that will keep your spine in a healthy posture throughout the night. The Sealy Posturepedic could be a great pick for you. This hybrid mattress is built with a sturdy innerspring coil core that is designed to keep your back propped up and keep your hips properly aligned with your shoulders throughout the night. This mattress is also topped with a gel memory foam layer for extra comfort and reinforced edges to keep you supported even if you sleep near the edge of the bed.

What Customers Say
Reviewers were impressed by the Sealy Posturepedic’s sturdy edge support and how easy it was to set up.
“I love our new Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress! I was skeptical of a mattress that comes in the mail. I couldn’t imagine it was going to feel thick, plush, soft or supportive. I was SO wrong. It is amazing how they package the mattress and how it re-inflates itself. We purchased a king size. I am a light sleeper, but this mattress is so successful in allowing me to get a deep sleep. I do not notice when my husband rolls over or gets up, it absorbs his movement. The mattress is soft and I feel like I sink into it, yet it is firm at the same time. It is very hard to explain, but it is truly so comfortable. Love it!”

Pros of the Sealy Posturepedic Mattress
The gel-infused memory foam helps move heat away from your body to keep you cool.
Sealy’s Duraflex Coil Edge system gives you extra support if you tend to toss and turn or like to sit on the edge of the mattress.
The Sealy Posturepedic is comfortable for combination and side sleepers, as well as back sleepers, according to reviews.
Cons of the Sealy Posturepedic Mattress
It may not be soft enough to those that prefer a memory foam feel.
This mattress isn’t available in any size smaller than full.

What our tester says:
“I found that this bed has a supportive feel that easily works for people of all weights, but still feels plush and comfortable.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
The Saatva Rx mattress is a sturdy, hybrid mattress designed to relieve joint and back pain with pressure-relieving foam and pocketed steel coils. It’s hard to beat Costco’s satisfaction guarantee, but Saatva has a year-long sleep trial period and a lifetime warranty. That said, the Saatva Rx is slightly more expensive than the Sealy Posturepedic after discounts. However, it has luxurious materials, zoned support, and a quilted organic cotton cover, and proves itself an excellent value mattress. Our mattress testers gave the Saatva Rx impressive scores across the board, including a 4.5 out of 5 for pressure relief, cooling, and responsiveness.
First and foremost, back sleepers with lower back pain need a mattress that offers good pressure relief in this position. As Dr. Dasgupta explains, “A suitable mattress can help ease back pain by distributing your body weight evenly, relieving pressure points that can cause discomfort.”
Thankfully, the Saatva Rx delivers in this area, earning a score of 4.5 out of 5. Our mattress testers were impressed with its pressure map test results in this position. The map showed nearly all blue with just a hint of green, meaning you’ll find ample relief on this mattress as a back sleeper.
The Saatva Rx mattress in our mattress studio.
“The Saatva Rx did a good job relieving pressure for me in both the back- and side-sleeping positions,” said mattress tester Amelia Jerden. “There is very little pressure buildup showing on these pressure maps, indicating this bed should be effective at pressure relief for back and side sleepers.”
Like many other hybrid mattresses, the Saatva Rx also offers great cooling. Being a hybrid with a thick layer of innerspring coils, the Saatva Rx has plenty of room for hot air to escape. After lying on the Saatva Rx for 5 minutes, our mattress testers used a temperature gun to capture the increase and saw that it only went up by 8 degrees. We gave it a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 in this category.
“With these results and the bed’s breathable construction in mind, I can confidently say the Saatva Rx is a solid option for hot sleepers,” said Amelia.
Our mattress testers also gave the Saatva Rx another 4.5 out of 5 in responsiveness. Our testers thought the Saatva Rx was easy to move around on. This is great news for combination sleepers who prefer to switch sides when they feel pressure building up in one area.
“I found the Saatva Rx pretty easy to move around on,” said Amelia. “While the bed doesn’t offer a ton of sinkage to the point of making it difficult to change sleeping positions, I also didn’t find the bed to be overly bouncy.”
While the Saatva Rx is a great Sealy Posturepedic alternative, it comes at a much higher price. At over $3,000 for a queen size, the Saatva Rx isn’t a great pick for shoppers on a budget. Additionally, side sleepers under 130 pounds may find the Saatva Rx to be too firm and may not receive enough pressure relief.
Set on the Saatva Rx? Read our full Saatva Rx mattress review to see how it performed on all of our tests. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, I recommend checking out the Helix Midnight Luxe.
Shopping on a budget doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality. The Comfort Tech mattress is made of CertiPUR-US certified foams, meaning that they meet rigorous standards for durability and are free of ozone depleters and other emissions. This all-foam bed was designed for lasting support and durability, according to the brand. The mattress also comes wrapped in moisture-wicking soft knit cover to help keep you dry and cool as you sleep. The Comfort Tech also comes in two firmness levels — Medium and Firm — and is available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.
What Customers Say
Customers liked that the bed provided soft cushioning comfort while responding to your movements. They said that the foam allows you to move easily without feeling stuck in the bed.
“Bought this firm mattress about 12 months ago. I used to wake every morning with a backache. Took me about 3 months to get used to the firmness of this mattress; it’s VERY firm (I actually put a foam topper on it for the first few months) but right from the start I no longer woke with backache, and 12 months later, I’m still not waking with a backache, and I no longer use a topper.”

Pros of the Comfort Tech Mattress
The foam layers of the Comfort Tech mattress are built with air pockets for added breathability.
Twin and full size options are great for smaller bedrooms, guest bedrooms, or kids’ bedrooms.
This bed’s foam layers relieve pressure from sleepers’ backs and joints, according to customer reviews.
Cons of the Comfort Tech Mattress
Innerspring mattress fans may not like the soft feeling of this all-foam bed. Plus, it may not work for those who need a firmer bed, like stomach sleepers.
The Comfort Tech mattress provides less edge support than other beds in this round up.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers should get pressure relief at the lumbar region from the soft foam up top and spinal support from the firmer foam below.
Stomach Sleepers
They should feel their hips lifted and aligned with their shoulders.
Couples
The Siena is responsive enough for sex and has strong edge support for a foam bed, so couples can use the entire surface of the mattress.
Pros of the Siena
It’s supportive yet cushioning enough for back sleepers.
It’s firm enough for stomach sleepers, which usually isn’t the case with foam mattresses.
There’s considerably strong edge support for a foam bed.
Cons of the Siena
The Siena is probably going to be too firm for side sleepers.

The Siena is somewhat surprising for an all-foam mattress; it’s fairly firm and is even supportive enough for stomach sleepers. Back sleepers should also be well-supported, and budget shoppers should appreciate its value price point. Learn more in our Siena video review.
What our tester says:
“The Siena has a simple, minimalistic design that gets the job done for stomach sleepers and a lot of back sleepers. I think it’s a great option for those after a firm mattress. It will keep sleepers propped up and slightly cushioned, which is especially a major win for stomach sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
Available at a similar budget price as the Comfort Tech, this all-foam Casper mattress has a medium-firm feel that leans slightly firm. A queen size currently costs $999, and you’re likely to find it for even cheaper after discounts. While that’s more expensive than the Comfort Tech, it’s still a value price and comes with a 10-year warranty — a testament to the mattress’s more durable materials. We gave this mattress a 4 or higher in motion isolation and support.
Our testers loved the firm, supportive feel of the Casper mattress, giving it a 4 out of 5 in this category. The foam materials are soft to the touch and provide nice relief at the shoulders and hips, while the overall design works to uplift the sleeper and creates more of an “on top” of the bed feel, which could work great for back and combination sleepers.
“I think this mattress is nice for sleepers suffering from lower back or shoulder pain,” said mattress tester Bridget Chapman. “I love how it helps keep the spine in a healthy alignment without creating stiffness in the shoulder area.”
The Casper One in the Sleepopolis studio.
If you or your partner are easily disturbed at night, you need a mattress with strong motion isolation. Our testers felt that the Casper mattress did a great job of preventing motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other and gave it another 4 out of 5 in this category.
“I think the Casper’s combination of motion isolation, mobility, strong edge support, and decent cooling should hit a sweet spot for most couples,” said Bridget. “They should be able to move around with ease during sex and utilize the entire sleeping surface without feeling cramped. They’re also not likely to feel each other tossing and turning during sleep.”
Despite its advantages, I wouldn’t recommend the Casper mattress to individuals over 230 pounds, as this all-foam bed may not provide the necessary firmness, durability, and stability. Similarly, strict stomach sleepers might find the mattress too soft for proper spinal alignment.
The Casper also isn’t my top pick for hot sleepers. It earned a 3.5 out of 5 in cooling, which isn’t terrible, but its basic design lacks the cooling features many other mattresses have.
Did the Casper catch your eye? Read more about it in our full Casper The One mattress review. If you’re looking for a mattress with better cooling than the Casper, I would recommend the Nectar Classic.
When looking for alternatives to the best Costco mattresses, I prioritized models that offered great features at a reasonable price. I also looked for companies that offered free shipping, generous sleep trials, and solid warranties. These mattresses are great choices that didn’t quite make the cut but might be a great option for you, depending on your sleep needs.
The Nectar Classic is an excellent choice for sleepers who prefer a medium-firm, all-foam alternative to the Comfort Tech or Casper. During testing, my fellow mattress testers and I gave it high scores in categories like cooling, motion isolation, and pressure relief. It ultimately didn’t make the list because the Casper The One mattress is cheaper before discounts. However, you can often find the Nectar Classic on sale for well under $1,000.
The DreamCloud Original is a reasonably priced luxury hybrid mattress. It excelled in categories like edge support, pressure relief, and responsiveness. DreamCloud also provides a generous lifetime warranty and a 365-night sleep trial if you’re reluctant about ordering a mattress sight unseen. The DreamCloud ultimately lost to the Nolah Evolution for best hybrid mattress on this list because it fell short in motion isolation.
How We Picked and Tested These Mattresses
My team and I have tested hundreds of mattresses to identify the ideal balance of durability, support, and comfort. Through hands-on evaluations and expert input, we assess each mattress based on key factors like pressure relief, cooling, and overall performance to determine whether it meets your needs.
We work closely with our professional network, which includes physical therapists, chiropractors, and sleep specialists, to ensure our recommendations are grounded in trusted, real-world expertise. We thoroughly examine how each mattress supports various sleeping positions, in addition to assessing how it addresses specific sleep concerns. We do this using advanced tools such as pressure mapping, thermal guns, and motion transfer tests.
Support
Your mattress should help you maintain proper spinal alignment and ensure the best sleep possible. A supportive mattress will keep your body in a neutral position and reduce the risk of aches and pains, especially for stomach and back sleepers.
“If a mattress doesn’t offer the proper support or firmness, it can worsen the discomfort around your pressure points.” Dr. Dasgupta explains. “In most scenarios, you should opt for a medium-firm to medium-soft mattress if you need to reduce pressure as you sleep.”
Our testers assess a mattress’s support by lying on it and carefully monitoring how well our bodies maintain a neutral alignment. We observe whether the mattress provides consistent support for the spine, hips, and shoulders — no body parts should sink in too deeply or feel as though they lack support.
Our mattress tester Kenny Timper lying on the Nectar.
Edge Support
When assessing edge support, we evaluate how well the mattress edge performs under pressure, particularly when we’re seated or lying near the edge. Our mattress testers sit on the edge of the bed and then move in and out of position, noting how stable and supportive the edges feel during these transitions. Next, our testers use a tape measure to gauge the sinkage along the edge when sitting on it. Minimal sinkage indicates better edge support, while deeper impressions suggest that the edge is less supportive.
Robust edge support is essential for sleepers with mobility issues because it makes getting in and out of bed easier and safer. When testing for edge support, we also lie along the mattress edge in different sleeping positions, checking for excessive sinkage or instability. A mattress with strong edge support should allow folks to switch positions without feeling like they might roll off the bed.
Edge support is another important factor in determining mattress quality. According to Dr. Dasgupta, “A durable mattress is made with high-quality materials, a strong support core, good edge support, and minimal sagging. It should provide long-lasting comfort and support, enduring wear and maintaining its structural integrity over time.”
One of our mattress testers testing out the edge support on the Octave Vista mattress.
Pressure Relief
We employ a pressure map test to measure a mattress’s ability to alleviate pressure and pain. Our testers use a specialized mat to get a digital thermal reading of the places where pressure is being alleviated and where it’s building up on our bodies. My colleagues and I put the mat on the mattress and lie on it in various positions to obtain these readings. This tells us how much pressure side, back, and stomach sleepers should expect to feel on the mattress.
A pressure map of someone in the back-sleeping position.A pressure map of someone in the side-sleeping position.
When making mattress recommendations, we like to steer strict side sleepers, side sleepers with joint pain, and back sleepers with back pain to beds that have excellent pressure relief results. These sleepers experience more buildup around those sensitive pressure points.
Materials also play a role in how well a mattress relieves pressure, as Dr. Dasgupta explains, “For the best pressure relief, look for latex mattresses or beds with memory foam in their construction.”
All-foam mattresses or hybrid beds with a plush layer of memory foam typically offer the cushioning and contouring these sleepers need to wake up pain-free.
Cooling
Our mattress testers use a thermal gun, a device that employs color-coded imaging to measure how quickly and to what extent a mattress heats up after someone lies on it for 5 minutes. This test helps us assess each mattress’s cooling performance by tracking temperature fluctuations. Here’s how we organize the results, based on temperature increase:
5 degrees or less: Excellent
5 to 10 degrees: Good
10 to 15 degrees: Satisfactory
Over 15 degrees: Poor
What to Consider When Buying A Costco Mattress
Costco offers budget-friendly options, premium models, and everything in between to cater to different sleep preferences and needs. Whether you prefer an innerspring, memory foam, or hybrid mattress, our selection of Costco beds promises a balance of comfort, support, and value.
When shopping for a Costco mattress or alternative, consider factors like firmness level, price, warranty, and any specific sleep concerns. Understanding your sleep preferences and body type will help you find the perfect mattress for a restful night’s sleep.
Firmness
The firmness of your mattress impacts comfort and sleep quality, and your ideal firmness depends on your sleep preferences and body type. A medium-firm mattress (6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale) balances support and pressure relief, making it perfect for most sleepers, but there are situations where a softer or firmer bed is necessary.
Folks with sensitive joints and strict side sleepers often find that medium-firm is too firm for them. These sleepers prefer softer beds (6 or lower on the firmness scale) to give them extra cushioning and contouring around sensitive pressure points. Back and stomach sleepers often need something firmer to keep their spines aligned at night.
Price
Mattresses are significant purchases because you’re buying something you’ll sleep on for many years. Many shoppers want a mattress that’s high-quality while still being affordable. Luckily, Costco is known for selling great products at a reasonable price point.
Some mattresses are more expensive than others, but Costco frequently offers discounts for members and usually has big sales around the holidays. If you want the best bang for your buck, check out Costco’s online prices, as they are sometimes cheaper online than in-store.
One of the benefits of shopping at Costco is its generous return policy. Costco has a 100-percent satisfaction guarantee, and mattresses do not have to be returned within a specific timeframe. If you bought your mattress in person, you’ll need to physically bring it to a Costco warehouse. Online mattress purchases can be returned online or at one of its stores. Once you return your mattress, you’ll get a refund of your whole purchase price.
If you’re shopping for a Costco mattress alternative online, then be sure to look for a generous sleep trial period. Many mattress brands offer sleep trials of 90 to 120 nights, giving you time to test the mattress and return it if you don’t love it. Some brands even offer a 365-night trial period, giving you a full year to determine if the bed fits your needs.
As for warranties, a standard 10-year warranty protects against defects such as sagging or manufacturing issues. However, some companies go above and beyond and offer lifetime warranties.
Shipping and Delivery
Costco provides free delivery and in-home setup with the purchase of your new mattress, except for customers in Alaska and Hawaii, who may have to pay an additional shipping fee. According to its policies, Costco will also haul away your old mattress, as long as it isn’t dirty or contaminated. Costco is required to collect a small mattress recycling fee if the shipping address is located in California, Connecticut, or Rhode Island.
If you’re shopping for a Costco mattress alternative online, you’ll want to look for brands that offer free shipping and free returns if the mattress doesn’t work out. Some mattress companies even provide white glove delivery, meaning they’ll come to your home, set up your new mattress, and remove your old one at no extra cost.
