Finding the best hypoallergenic mattress is important if you’re trying to keep your nighttime sneezes, asthma, or any allergic reactions at bay. These beds are equipped with materials to fight against common allergens like dust, dust mites, mold, and pet dander — all the stuff you don’t want to be sleeping on or have growing near your skin. Because there are many different options available, we rounded up our picks for the best hypoallergenic mattresses to help you on your bed-shopping journey.

Our expert recommendations have helped more than 15,622 people find a new mattress in 2024 alone (and 60,108 people overall since we started in 2014). Our certified sleep science coaches have tested over 330 beds in our studio using our medically reviewed mattress testing methodology.

When putting together this list of best hypoallergenic mattresses, I also consulted Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who is board-certified in sleep medicine, to ensure our methodology and specific recommendations are accurate.

Our Top Pick for Hypoallergenic Mattresses

We chose the DreamCloud as our top pick for hypoallergenic mattresses because of its luxurious materials and high-level support.

What I Looked for in the Best Hypoallergenic Mattresses

When looking for the best hypoallergenic mattresses, we focused on what mattered most to allergy sufferers, starting with materials designed to resist common allergens like dust mites, mold, and pet dander. Our evaluation also included key performance criteria like responsiveness and edge support, which impact comfort and long-term durability.

  • Materials: We know that if you are looking for the best mattresses for allergies, then allergen-resistant material is important to you. Because of this, we made sure to test the materials on each of these mattresses to make sure they are resistant to allergens. For instance, many of the mattresses on this list contain latex, because studies show that it is a natural anti-allergen.
  • Responsiveness: A responsive mattress quickly springs back to its original shape after weight is applied, allowing sleepers to move with little effort. This springiness can indicate the presence of genuine latex, which is an inherently hypoallergenic material that resists dust mites, mold, and other common allergens. Our testers assess responsiveness by evaluating how easy it is to maneuver and switch sleeping positions on a mattress. We also place a kettlebell on the bed for seven seconds and record how long it takes to return to its original shape. The mattresses on this list all scored a 4 out of 5 or higher on responsiveness.
  • Edge support: Edge support is important because it ensures the mattress provides consistent and comfortable support across its entire surface. “Mattresses that provide uniform support distribute your body weight evenly,” explains Dr. Dasgupta. “Uneven weight distribution during sleep can lead to pressure buildup that causes additional discomfort.” It’s also a good indicator of durability, as mattresses with strong edge support are less prone to sagging over time. The mattresses here all scored a 3.6 out of 5 or higher on edge support, with all but one of the beds scoring a 4 or higher.

With soft foam and a sturdy layer of innerspring coils, the DreamCloud strikes a balance between comfort and support — a little bit of contouring up top and on-top-of-the-bed feel that comes from the bottom. It’s a fairly firm mattress that we think is most comfortable for back sleepers. It also has some luxury touches such as a cashmere-blend cover that are reminiscent of a high-end hotel. Learn more in our DreamCloud video review.

What our tester says:

“I really like how luxurious this mattress feels and how it could work for a variety of sleepers. Along with that, I found that the breathable cashmere cover helps the DreamCloud sleep cool throughout the night. Thanks to its medium-firm to firm support, I think the DreamCloud is a durable mattress. It balances support with plenty of pressure relief for back sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor

The DreamCloud mattress is my top pick for the best hypoallergenic mattress for several reasons. The DreamCloud’s high-quality materials include a gel-infused memory foam layer, dense transitional polyfoam, and sturdy innerspring coils. If you have allergies, you can also rest easy knowing that you won’t have a reaction to the DreamCloud at night, thanks to its cashmere cover layer, which is  naturally resistant to dust mites and other common allergens, making it more hypoallergenic than other options. Further solidifying its quality, the mattress earned a 4.5 out of 5 or higher in key testing categories like pressure relief, edge support, and responsiveness.

What we love most about the DreamCloud is its versatility. Our mattress testers found that its excellent pressure-relieving performance makes it a great fit for a wide range of sleepers. Based on their feedback, I gave it a 4.5 out of 5 in this category.

“The DreamCloud does a stellar job relieving tension around the lower back,” said mattress tester Bridget Chapman. “As I sank into this bed, I could feel its top layers of foam filling in the space at my lumbar region for some pleasant pressure relief.”

The DreamCloud also earned another 4.5 out of 5 for its edge support. Thanks to its pocketed coil layer, the perimeter of this mattress feels just as supportive as it does in the middle of the bed. Our mattress testers had no trouble sitting and lying down along the edges of the bed. This is a big plus for couples who like to sprawl out to the far reaches of the mattress and folks with mobility concerns who need a strong surface to bear down on in the morning.

PressureMap DreamCloud 1
Pressure map results for the DreamCloud mattress.

However, the DreamCloud’s real crown jewel is its stellar responsiveness, which earned it a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category. If a mattress is responsive, it makes it easy for you to move around and change positions. This is a perk for combination sleepers who frequently toss and turn to get comfortable at night.

While the DreamCloud is a versatile option that could suit a variety of sleepers, I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to people who are sensitive to motion and folks with hip pain. Our mattress testers gave it a motion isolation score of 3.5 out of 5, meaning it’s about average.

“I thought it did a decent job, especially for a bouncy hybrid mattress,” said Bridget. “However, I think you’re still likely to be bothered by your partner or pet’s movements at night, especially if they get in and out of bed a lot.”

And despite the DreamCloud’s near-perfect pressure relief score, our testers noticed a little bit of pressure buildup in their hips while testing this mattress on their sides. This shouldn’t be an issue for most sleepers, but sleepers with hip pain would probably fare better on a softer mattress.

Are you interested in learning more about the DreamCloud? Check out our full DreamCloud mattress review for more information. If a softer mattress is more your style, I recommend checking out the Nectar Classic instead.

The Nolah Natural is made with eco-friendly Talalay latex and supportive coils. This mattress has GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic wool, cotton, natural latex, and recycled steel. The latex makes this mattress responsive, which is great for couples and combination sleepers. This material is also naturally hypoallergenic and cooling, which can help hot sleepers prevent overheating. For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“It has a very soft, plush feel that provides you some cushioning as well. I’d say you’re going to feel more “on top” of this bed than “in it” — thanks to its bouncy latex.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor.

The Nolah Natural is an 11-inch mattress made with hypoallergenic and eco-friendly materials, including organic latex, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic wool, GOTS-certified cotton, and recycled steel coils. It’s also a side sleeper’s dream come true thanks to its excellent performance in the pressure relief, edge support, and responsiveness categories, where it earned a 4 out of 5 or higher.

A challenge that side sleepers face when mattress shopping is finding one that is supportive enough to keep their spines in healthy alignment yet soft enough to cradle sensitive areas like their hips and shoulders. Fortunately, side sleepers can enjoy both on this mattress, thanks to its ultra-soft and breathable organic cotton cover and supportive innerspring coils. Our mattress testers gave its pressure relief a 4.17 out of 5 because it struck an even balance of contouring and support in the side-sleeping position.

“I like that this mattress is a little firmer,” said mattress tester Erin Chiles. “I’m not sinking in too much, and I feel comfortable and supported on my side.”

The Nolah Natural’s pressure map test results.
Pressure map results for the Nolah Natural.

Edge support was another category the Nolah Natural mattress performed well in, earning a near-perfect 4.8 out of 5. Side sleepers can sleep anywhere on this bed, knowing they will get the same sturdy support even on its furthermost corners.

“I was really impressed with the edge support lying down,” said mattress tester Riley Otis. “I didn’t feel any significant sinkage or sagging, and I think this bed would allow couples to fully spread out and sleep right up to the edge.”

Like most natural latex mattresses, the Nolah is a slam dunk for combination sleepers, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 in responsiveness. If you’re a side sleeper who frequently switches between your side and back or side and stomach, you should have no trouble changing positions on this mattress.

However, as great as the Nolah Natural is for side and combination sleepers, it’s not perfect. I wouldn’t recommend this bed to folks who get very hot at night, as its cooling was only average. Our testers also found that it had less-than-stellar motion isolation, meaning if you are easily disturbed, you will probably feel every movement your partner or pet makes on your side of the bed.

Need to get your hands on the natural materials in the Nolah? Check out our full Nolah Natural mattress review to see how it performed on all our tests. If you’re looking for a mattress with stronger motion isolation, I recommend checking out the Nolah Evolution instead.

The Nectar Premier is a luxurious all-foam mattress equipped with quality materials. A moisture-wicking cover and gel-infused comfort layer create a cooling, thermoregulating mattress for hot sleepers. Perhaps its strongest attribute is its next-level pressure relief. Six inches of foam work to contour sensitive areas, but the high-density foam at the bottom of the bed provides plenty of support. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“My favorite thing about the Nectar Premier is its great pressure relief. This medium-soft mattress is a great fit for side sleepers looking for plush comfort. It might also be a nice fit for sleepers who deal with shoulder pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Every inch of the Nectar Premier is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s free from VOCs (volatile organic compounds), harmful chemicals, and heavy metals. The cover layer on this mattress also has polyethylene fibers, which work hard to wick away heat and create a cool-to-the-touch feel. During testing, the Premier excelled in cooling and edge support, earning a 4 out of 5 in both categories. This mattress is a fantastic option for couples who sleep hot or want a mattress that lets them spread out at night.

If you and your partner prefer the slow-sinking feel of memory foam but are worried about its heat-trapping tendencies, the Nectar Premier might be the bed you’ve been wishing for. Unlike most other all-foam models, the Nectar Premier does a great job of regulating temperature. When our testers measured its surface temperature before and after lying on it for 5 minutes, they found that it only increased by 6.6 degrees. Based on these results, our mattress testers awarded it a 4 out of 5 for cooling, which is impressive for a memory foam mattress.

A comparison of thermal readings of a Nectar Premier before and after 5 minutes of use.
Our thermal gun testing images for the Nectar Premier.

“After lying on it for 5 minutes, the mattress only felt a little warmer to the touch,” said mattress tester Dan Caffrey. “But when you get up and push your hand into it, it immediately feels cool again.”

The Nectar Premier is also a solid pick for couples who tend to gravitate toward the edges of the mattress. Our testers gave it a 4 out of 5 in the edge support category because they felt secure while sitting and lying on the perimeter of the mattress. Robust edge support is another impressive feat for the all-foam Premier because most memory foam models tend to collapse as you move toward the outer reaches of the bed.

“Despite being able to feel some sinkage, I felt very supported while lying near the edge of the mattress,” Dan said.

However, there are a couple of things to be aware of before buying Nectar Premier. If you or your partner are sensitive to movement, I suggest looking for a mattress with better motion isolation. Dan found that its motion-dampening abilities were about average. If your partner is a particularly restless sleeper, you will likely feel them tossing and turning throughout the night.

Dan also found it somewhat challenging to switch between different sleeping positions on this bed.

“I struggled just a little bit to switch from my back to my stomach,” Dan said. “But everything else was pretty easy. I have the Nectar Classic at home, and it’s more responsive than this one.”

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a firm yet bouncy bed. The latex foam and coils make this mattress very supportive, which can appeal to back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and sleepers weighing over 250 pounds. This bed is also very responsive, which makes it a solid choice for combination sleepers who need to easily change sleeping positions without getting stuck. We consider the Saatva Latex Hybrid to be a durable mattress made with high-quality materials, and the lifetime warranty indicates it should last you for many years to come.

What our tester says:

“The Saatva Latex Hybrid definitely has cooling under control. Latex is a naturally cooling material, allowing this mattress to regulate body temperature and provide a cool sleeping experience. Plus, the same individually wrapped coil layer that gives the Saatva Latex Hybrid its bounce also allows for air to flow through the mattress, adding to its overall breathability.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Thanks to its natural bouncy latex, the Saatva Latex has a more “on top” feel that prevents sleepers from sinking too far into its layers. Our testers gave this mattress a 5 out of 5 in responsiveness because its firm and bouncy construction enabled them to easily maneuver between sleeping positions. In other words, this bed is perfect for combination sleepers in the market for a hypoallergenic option.

Combination sleepers, or folks who switch between multiple sleeping positions throughout the night, need a responsive mattress that enables them to move around without feeling trapped. Our testers found that the Latex Hybrid is more responsive than most innerspring mattresses thanks to its combination of bouncy latex and innerspring coils and awarded it a perfect 5-star rating in the responsiveness category.

“The latex construction made this mattress feel very springy, which helped me switch positions,” said mattress tester Riley Otis. “I found it easy to move around on this bed. It also has a lot of lift, so I never felt trapped in the foam.”

However, superb responsiveness often comes at the price of motion isolation, and the Saatva Latex Hybrid is no exception. Riley and her fellow mattress testers thought this mattress had lackluster motion-dampening abilities.

“When lying on the bed with my testing partner, I could feel pretty much every movement she made,” Riley said. “I could feel the vibrations traveling to my side of the mattress. Her tossing and turning jostled my body around. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this bed to light sleepers.”

Our testers also found that the Saatva Latex Hybrid had just average edge support. While they felt more supported lying down on the perimeter of the mattress, they found more sinkage when sitting on the edges and corners of the bed. Based on their feedback, I wouldn’t recommend the Latex Hybrid to folks with mobility concerns who need a sturdy surface when getting up in the morning.

The Birch Natural is a latex mattress utilizing individually wrapped coils for added support. This mattress specializes in cooling and responsiveness, and the firmer nature suits back and stomach sleepers well. Perhaps the most special part about this mattress is the material quality. Not only is the Birch organic, but it has also earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“One of my favorite things about the Birch is how cooling it is. I think any hot sleeper will be satisfied by this breathable bed. It’s definitely one of the most cooling mattresses available thanks to its wool and latex layers. These cooling materials also make it one of my favorite organic mattresses.” – Madison Schaper, Sleepopolis staff writer

Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta says, “A mattress can worsen your allergy symptoms if it attracts dust mites, promotes mildew and mold growth, or is made of allergenic materials.” Fortunately for allergy sufferers, the Birch Natural is a fully organic hypoallergenic mattress backed by top-tier certifications, including GREENGUARD Gold, GOTS, and Eco-INSTITUT. Better yet, our mattress testers gave it a 4 out of 5 or higher in motion isolation and responsiveness – two categories that normally don’t play nice with each other.

Our mattress testers gave the Birch 5 stars for responsiveness thanks to its springy natural latex and coils, which make it easy to move around on – something that’s great for both combination sleeping and sex.

“It’s super easy to switch between different positions on this bed,” said mattress tester Dan Caffrey. “I don’t feel much sinkage when I roll over, and I have no problem moving from my back to side to stomach.”

The Birch Natural also has surprisingly good motion isolation for a bed filled with bouncy latex and springy coils. Our testers gave it a 4 out of 5 in the motion isolation category because of its solid performance on our couples test, in which one tester lies blindfolded on one side of the bed as another tester gets in and out of bed and moves around on the other.

“I felt a little bit of movement coming from my testing partner’s side of the bed, but not too much,” Dan said. “The Birch has surprisingly good motion isolation overall.”

Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a perfect mattress, and the Birch is no exception. We would not recommend this mattress to side sleepers who suffer from aches and pains or people who sleep extra hot. During testing, our mattress testers felt some pressure buildup along their shoulders and hips while lying on their sides. They also felt it heating up as they were lying down on it. While most sleepers should feel comfortable and cozy on the Birch, we’d recommend looking for a better cooling mattress if you typically wake up covered in sweat.

The Helix Dawn is one of the firmest mattresses offered by the company. Its construction provides good comfort for heavy people and stomach sleepers, both of whom need extra support to keep from sinking uncomfortably below the mattress surface. Like the other Helix mattresses, it can be upgraded to the Luxe version if you’re willing to pay a little extra for luxury features. To learn more, check out our video on Helix mattresses.

What our tester says:

“I really appreciate how supportive these mattresses are. Stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and heavy people (those over 250 pounds) could all benefit from the firm feel of this bed. No matter which model you choose, the Helix Dawn really delivers on lumbar support.” Logan Block, former Sleepopolis content director and mattress tester

The Helix brand offers numerous mattresses, and the Helix Dawn is the firmest bed in its standard line. This hybrid mattress combines hypoallergenic memory foam layers and supportive pocketed coils for balanced support and comfort. Our mattress testers found the firm feel of the Helix Dawn to be a nice fit for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and heavyweight sleepers alike. We were impressed by its overall performance and awarded it a 4 out of 5 or higher in responsiveness, edge support, and cooling.

Like many other firm hybrid mattresses, the Helix Dawn has excellent responsiveness. Our testers gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category because they were impressed by how easy it was to maneuver on the Helix Dawn.

“This is a very bouncy, responsive mattress,” said mattress tester Dan Caffrey. “Its firmness and hybrid construction made it easy to switch positions. I felt no sinkage or difficulty of movement whatsoever when moving from my back to my side to my stomach.”

We also found that the Helix Dawn has extra sturdy edge support, meaning it’s just as firm and supportive at the perimeter as it is in the center. We gave it a strong 4 out of 5 in this category because, aside from a slight dip while sitting on the edge, our testers felt secure while lying down and switching positions on either side of the mattress.

“I felt adequately supported while lying near the edge,” Dan said. “I could feel the perimeter dipping a little while on my side, but not to the point where I felt unstable.”

Last but not least, the Helix Dawn is also a solid choice for hot sleepers. We test cooling by using a thermal gun to measure the temperature of the mattress surface before and after lying on it for 5 minutes. During this test, we found that it increased by 7.8 degrees, which indicates good temperature regulation. Our testers gave this a 4 out of 5 for its cooling overall.

However, the Helix Dawn is not without its shortcomings. Our mattress testers found it performed weaker in motion isolation and side-sleeping pressure relief and gave it a 3 and 2.67 out of 5 in those categories, respectively.

Long story short, we would not recommend this firm mattress to folks with restless pets or partners, as they will likely feel every movement coming from the opposite side of the bed. We also think it is a bit too firm for strict side sleepers. These folks will not get the gentle contouring and cushioning they need around high-pressure areas like their shoulders and hips.

If you’re looking for a mattress made with high-quality, organic materials, then look no further than the WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress. This bed is packed with sustainable materials, including organic cotton, sustainable New Zeland wool, natural Talalay latex, and recycled steel coils. The quilted cover gives this bed an initial plush feel, and the sturdy coils below provide lift and support. We especially like this bed for back sleepers, as it has the perfect balance between pressure relief and lumbar support. We also think hot sleepers would enjoy the breathable materials that work to keep the bed cool all night.

What our tester says:

“The EcoCloud is a great mattress for back sleepers. it has zoned support, which is meant to help promote a neutral spinal alignment, especially when back sleeping.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

If you buy the WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress, you can rest assured knowing you’re sleeping on hypoallergenic and organic materials. This mattress includes a cover made from cotton and sustainable New Zealand wool and a 4-inch comfort layer of Talalay latex, which is antimicrobial and non-toxic. However, the icing on the organic cake is the incredible performance for back pain relief. Our mattress testers gave it a 5 and 4.5 for support and edge support, respectively, which are crucial for alleviating back pain.

Many sleepers suffer from back pain due to a lack of support as they sleep. A supportive mattress should prop up the area around your hips to keep your spine in a neutral position with the rest of your body. Maintaining proper sleep posture is more important than you think; one study even found that it helps prevent pain and spinal issues.

“A suitable mattress can help ease back pain by providing proper support that keeps your spine aligned naturally, reducing muscle strain,” explains Dr. Dasgupta. “It also distributes your body weight evenly and relieves pressure points that can cause discomfort. The mattress adapts to your preferred sleeping position, whether you’re a back, side, or stomach sleeper.”

Our mattress testers awarded this mattress a perfect 5 out of 5 for support and a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 for edge support, meaning that no matter where sleepers find themselves on this mattress, they should get ample support and pressure relief around their lower lumbar spine.

“I think the EcoCloud is a great organic mattress for back sleepers,” said mattress tester Nichole Mondshein. “It has zoned support, which should help promote a neutral spinal alignment, especially when lying on your back.”

While the EcoCloud is ideal for back sleepers, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress to side sleepers under 130 pounds or couples who are sensitive to movement at night. Side sleepers in this weight category will likely need something softer to cushion their hips and shoulders. Meanwhile, couples sensitive to motion will likely feel every little stir in the middle of the night.

The EcoCloud’s thermal gun readings before and after lying down on it for five minutes.
The EcoCloud’s temperature rose by just 7.1 degrees Fahrenheit after lying down on it for 5 minutes.

“While testing the EcoCloud with a colleague, I could feel everything they were doing from the moment he got into bed to when he switched between various sleeping positions and left,” Nichole said. “In other words, this mattress is probably not the best choice for couples with a restless partner.”

The Bear Star Hybrid is a softer hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring coils. It offers pressure relief, contouring, and solid support for many sleeper types, but especially back, side, and combination sleepers. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy. I loved how plush the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt comfortable and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

The Bear Star Hybrid is a hypoallergenic mattress created with cooling in mind. The brand features Celliant in its optional cover, gel-infused memory foam in its comfort layer, and pocketed coils in its base layer — all of which help promote airflow, dissipate body heat, and keep sleepers cool throughout the night. My fellow mattress testers and I gave the Star Hybrid a strong 4 out of 5 in cooling, alongside high scores in edge support and responsiveness.

If you tend to sleep hot, I think the Bear Star Hybrid is a viable option to help keep the sweating at bay. I measured the surface temperature of the Star Hybrid before and after lying on it for 5 minutes to see how much heat it trapped and found that it increased by about 7 degrees.

After getting up and touching the area I lay on, I felt the pillow-top mattress cover was just a tad warmer than before I got into bed. I thought its minimal heat retention was impressive, considering pillow tops are notorious for transforming into a furnace after absorbing body heat. Based on its performance, I gave it a 4 out of 5 for cooling.

My fellow mattress tester, Livvi DiCicco, and I also loved the Star Hybrid’s robust edge support and awarded it a 4.6 out of 5 in this category.

“Lying down on each position, I felt pretty secure,” Livvi said. “If I was super close to the edge, I noticed a teeny amount of sinkage.”

Pressure map results for the Bear Star Hybrid
Pressure map results for the Bear Star Hybrid.

Responsiveness, however, was where the Bear Star Hybrid really shined. It felt super easy to roll around and switch between different sleeping positions. I had no trouble whatsoever with this mattress. Livvi and I gave this mattress a perfect 5 out of 5 in the responsiveness category because of how easy it was to maneuver on.

The only areas where the Star Hybrid faltered were side-sleeping pressure relief and motion isolation. While lying on my side, I didn’t feel any pressure relief or contouring around my hips or shoulders. I also felt all of Livvi’s movements on my side of the bed during the couples motion isolation test, meaning that folks with restless partners should probably choose a different mattress.

The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep mattress is an organic, latex hybrid mattress that’s supportive, bouncy, and natural. We think this bed is a great pick for heavy weight sleepers (those weighing over 250 pounds), and these folk should feel supported and comfortable. We also like this firm mattress for stomach sleepers, as it can help keep their hips propped up and promote proper spinal alignment. If you sleep on your back and prefer a firmer feel, then this mattress could be a nice choice. We also appreciate how cool this mattress sleeps due to its breathable latex foams and airy coils.

What our tester says:

“The EcoSleep is a responsive mattress. Changing positions will probably be easy for most people. Even if you sink into the latex a bit, you’re not going to get much of a contouring feel from this mattress.” – Logan Block, former content director

The best part about hybrid mattresses is how they balance comfort and support, but sadly, not all can ward off allergens. Fortunately, that is not the case with the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep. The EcoSleep uses Earth-friendly and hypoallergenic materials throughout its construction and earned a 4 out of 5 or higher in responsiveness and edge support.

If you’re someone who tosses, turns, rolls, and changes positions throughout the night, you need a mattress that doubles as a springboard for your nightly gymnastics. The good news is our mattress testers found the EcoSleep incredibly easy to move around and awarded it a 4.5 out of 5 for responsiveness.

“I love how responsive the EcoSleep is,” said mattress tester Logan Block. “Changing positions will probably be easy for most people. Even if you sink into the latex a bit, you’re not going to feel stuck in this mattress.”

If your dreams cause you to travel to the far reaches of the mattress, you will not have to worry about falling off of the EcoSleep. Thanks to its robust edge support, you will feel as secure on the mattress perimeter as you do in the center. Our mattress testers gave the EcoSleep a 4 out of 5 in edge support.

“I only felt a tiny dip while sitting on the side of the bed,” Logan said. “Otherwise, lying down on the very far reaches felt stable and secure.”

All that said, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress to strict side sleepers or couples. The EcoSleep model is probably not ideal for folks who sleep on their sides because of its subpar pressure relief in the shoulders. Additionally, sleepers with a partner may have trouble because of the high amount of motion transferred across the mattress.

Curious about how the EcoSleep performed on all our mattress tests? Check out our full Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep mattress review. If you require more cushioning around your hips and shoulders, I recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe instead.

Other Hypoallergenic Mattresses I Considered

After finalizing our list of the best hypoallergenic mattresses, we feel confident we selected the best of the best. Still, a few excellent options just missed the cut for minor reasons. Here are two standout mattresses that narrowly missed our top 10.

Avocado Green

We were impressed by the Avocado Green’s commitment to natural, organic materials. It features certified organic latex, wool, and cotton — all of which are great for allergy sufferers and environmentally conscious shoppers. The mattress also holds multiple third-party certifications, including GOTS and GOLS, which speak to its quality. However, we ultimately left it off the final list due to its higher price point, which may place it out of reach for budget shoppers.

Birch Luxe

The Birch Luxe is another high-performing hypoallergenic mattress, made with natural latex, a plush Euro Top, and breathable comfort layers. While we appreciated its luxurious feel and breathable materials, we opted to include the Birch Natural instead. The Birch Natural offers stronger edge support and a lower price tag, making it a better overall value for most sleepers.

How We Picked and Tested These Mattresses

We use a hands-on, multi-step testing process to mirror real-life use to select and evaluate the mattresses featured in this guide. Our testers assess each type of mattress across key performance categories, including materials, responsiveness, and edge support, to find the best hypoallergenic mattresses. Learn more about how we test each category below.

Materials

As part of our assessment, we cut open each mattress to inspect its internal construction. This gives us a firsthand look at the layers, material quality, and craftsmanship used in each model. When evaluating hypoallergenic bedding and mattresses, we specifically look for natural flame retardants and materials that resist allergens like dust mites, mold, and mildew, like certified organic Talalay or Dunlop latex, plant-based memory foams, and covers made from organic cotton or bamboo.

A closeup of the Nolah Evolution mattress's layers. A small section on the side of the bed has been cut out, showing the layers of foam and springs.
A closeup look at the construction of a mattress.

Responsiveness

A responsive mattress is one on which sleepers can change positions without feeling trapped. When assessing a bed’s responsiveness, we first look at the materials. If a mattress contains real hypoallergenic latex, it will likely be springy and responsive. To evaluate responsiveness, we rely on three tests: the switch test, the sinkage test, and the bounce test.

The switch test involves lying on the mattress and shifting between different sleeping positions to assess how easily the sleep surface allows movement, which is especially important for combination sleepers.

The sinkage test uses a 53-pound kettlebell placed on the mattress to measure how deeply it compresses under weight, helping us understand how much contouring and resistance the mattress offers.

A man switching sleeping positions on top of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress.
Our tester Kenny Timper switching positions on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

Finally, the bounce test involves dropping a 25-pound steel ball from a height of six feet and measuring its rebound using a yardstick mounted on the wall. This test gauges how springy and responsive the mattress feels, which also affects ease of movement and overall support.

Edge Support

Edge support is an important factor that helps us determine how long a mattress will last. According to Dr. Dasgupta, “A durable mattress has quality materials, a strong support core, and good edge support. A mattress should offer long-lasting comfort and maintain its structural integrity over time.”

When testing edge support, our mattress experts evaluate how well the mattress edge performs when applying weight to it. We sit on the edge of the bed and then move in and out of position, noting how stable and supportive the edges feel during these transitions.

A woman sitting on the edge of the Nolah Evolution mattress to test its edge support.
Our tester Sosha Lewis testing out the Nolah Evolution’s edge support.

We also test edge support by stacking weights on top of each other directly on the edge of the bed. We repeat this process three times using three weight stacks — a 99-pound stack, a 154-pound stack, and a 198-pound stack. Next, we use a tape measure to measure the sinkage.

This test simulates how much the perimeter of a mattress might sink when sleepers in various weight categories sit or lie on the edge. The 99-pound stack represents lightweight sleepers, while the 154-pound and 198-pound stacks represent average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, respectively.

Strong edge support is essential for sleepers with mobility concerns and folks who enjoy spreading out to the far reaches of the mattress. A mattress with good edge support should give you a sturdy surface to bear down when getting up in the morning and allow you to switch positions without feeling like you might roll off the bed.

What to Consider When Buying a Hypoallergenic Mattress

Investing in a new hypoallergenic mattress can significantly improve sleep quality for people with allergies or sensitivities. However, not all “hypoallergenic” claims are created equal — so it’s important to know what to look for in terms of materials, certifications, and overall performance. It’s also important to know what your own sleep needs are based on your body type and preferences.

Certifications

When shopping for a hypoallergenic mattress, look for third-party certifications that verify the materials used are safe and allergy-friendly. Key certifications include GREENGUARD Gold, which ensures low chemical emissions; OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which confirms textiles are free from harmful substances; and GOLS or GOTS, which certify the organic status of latex and textiles, respectively.

Firmness and Body Type

Firmness is an important aspect of all mattresses, and every sleeper has a unique preference for the kind of firmness they like. Further, different firmness options may be better for different types of sleepers and more useful for specific kinds of pain or pressure relief.

We used our expertly developed and tested firmness scale to evaluate the firmness level of every single mattress in this list. The firmness scale ranks mattresses from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most firm. A rating of 6.5 out of 10 is widely considered the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress, which offers a balance of support and comfort suitable for most sleepers. We use this scale by having one of our expert mattress testers lie on each mattress in various sleeping positions. Our testers use the firmness scale to explain and understand the level of support, comfort, and pressure relief each mattress can potentially provide.

It is important to note that beds are typically going to feel firmer to sleepers under 130 pounds than they do other sleepers. Sleepers with bigger bodies also need more support from a bed, so they may prefer a firmer-than-average mattress.

Price and Company Policies

Hypoallergenic mattresses can be more expensive than other kinds of mattresses. This is because sourcing and approval of organic or hypoallergenic materials can be more expensive and time-consuming than other materials. However, there are certainly ways to find affordable hypoallergenic mattresses. We recommend shopping around holidays like Memorial and Labor Day or looking out for online exclusive sales.

We also suggest looking into companies that offer sleep trial periods that are at least 100 nights, meaning you can try the mattress for 100 nights to be sure you love it. This can help you be sure you made the right choice and be confident this is the mattress you want. Warranty is another important factor, especially if a mattress is on the pricier side. We recommend looking for companies that offer a 10-year warranty at minimum.

FAQs

What are some other healthy types of mattresses?

Organic/natural mattresses. Along with being hypoallergenic, they’re free of toxins, moisture-wicking, and more naturally breathable than non-organic mattresses.

How do I tell if my mattress contains toxic materials or not?

You’ll want to check if your mattress has received third-party certifications, such as the OEKO-TEX certification and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means your bed is free from harmful chemicals. GOTS applies to the mattress’ cover, and means it’s certified organic.

What hypoallergenic bedding do you recommend?

We recommend looking for natural materials, like cotton, wool, silk, and bamboo. You can also purchase a hypoallergenic mattress cover for even more protection.

How can I prevent allergens or dust mites from being on my mattress?

Clean your bed twice a year and wash your sheets/bedding weekly. Check out our full mattress cleaning guide for more information.
