Helix Midnight Mattress Overview
As a brand, Helix is all about customization. You can take a sleep quiz on their website in order to get a personalized recommendation. Plus, the Helix brand has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each one with a different firmness level. The Helix Midnight falls somewhere in the middle (more on that in a bit). Each of these models is also available in an upgraded Luxe version, as well as an Elite version, which has even more luxury features.
Like every product in the Helix line, the Midnight is a bed-in-a-box mattress that arrives at your door rolled up and compressed. It will undergo a 24- to 72-hour off-gassing and decompression period after it’s opened. If you have any concerns with odors during this time, leave your new bed in a well-ventilated room. This smell is nothing to worry about, and it should dissipate one its own after one or two days.

What Is the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight is 12 inches tall with four layers. Let’s dive in to learn a little bit more about each specific layer.
Cover – The Breathe Knit cover included on the Helix Midnight is made from a light, stretchy material that helps promote airflow to keep sleepers cool during the night. I found this cover to be soft to the touch. You can also pay extra to add a cooling GlacioTex pillow top.
Comfort Layer – Next up is a top layer including both Memory Plus Foam and High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam. These blended foams should help relieve pressure at the joints and offer a nice contouring feel when you’re lying down on this mattress. Memory foam can sometimes make you feel like you are “stuck” in the bed, but with the addition of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam, which has more of a medium feel, I don’t anticipate many people having that problem with this bed. The memory foam layer also isn’t too thick in this model.
Transition Layer – A second layer of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam separates the Memory Plus Foam in the comfort layer from the pocketed coils in the support layer below. This foam layer provides a cushioning feel and more ergonomic support for your body, and it adds some support underneath the soft memory foam above.
Support Layer – The support layer of the Helix Midnight consists of individually wrapped coils. These help to support your body, and they add a bouncy feeling to the bed so you don’t feel “stuck” in the mattress or struggle to roll over, get in and out of bed, or move positions.
Base Layer – Finally, the base of the mattress is made with a final layer of DuraDense foam for maximum support, ensuring that this mattress doesn’t sag.
Edge Support – Two sides of the Helix Midnight have reinforced edges to make sure that you can sit or sleep near the edge of this bed without fear of sinkage or sagging.
Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness
Before we get into this, a quick reminder — mattress firmness is not an objective measure. Your weight, sleep position, and personal preferences will inform how hard or soft you find any given model. That said, we try to give you a balanced firmness score by having several colleagues try out the Helix Midnight. They give their rating and we averaged the scores together.
After lying on the mattress for a while and tallying everyone else’s scores, I gave the Helix Midnight a 6.5 out of 10 rating on our mattress firmness scale (with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest), making it a medium-firm bed. In fact, 6.5 is the industry standard for medium firmness. I would recommend this mattress for all three sleeping positions (back sleeping, side sleeping, and stomach sleeping) because it’s supportive, without putting pressure on your joints. This model also has a nice, bouncy feel, thanks to its hybrid construction. That means it’s easy to roll around on, so combination sleepers shouldn’t have trouble changing positions during the night.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most beds are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers, and they usually sink into their mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress, while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers typically fall somewhere in the middle.
Is the Helix Midnight a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers should be happy on the Midnight, as they’ll get some nice contouring around their lower back.
- Light Side Sleepers – Lighter side sleepers could be happy here, too, but if they prefer an especially soft bed, I’d recommend that they check out our roundup of the best soft mattresses for more pressure relief.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Light stomach sleepers could be happy on the Midnight if they only spend part of the night on their stomach.
Is the Helix Midnight a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 Pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These folks should be happy on the Midnight, as it offers a nice balance of pressure relief and support. They should get pressure relief at the lumbar region and spinal support from the springs.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Midnight is a nice choice for side sleepers that won’t put too much pressure on their shoulders, hips, or other sensitive joints.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I was surprised that it felt so comfortable stomach sleeping on the Helix Midnight, as strict stomach sleepers typically need a firmer mattress to offer proper spinal support.
The contouring foams are specifically designed to contour around side sleepers’ bodies which should then provide cushioning around these sleepers’ joints like their hips, shoulders, and neck. Immediately when I laid on this mattress for the first time, I felt it relieved a lot of stored pressure from my back and hips which is a huge plus as someone who suffers from chronic pain in the lower lumbar region.

Is the Helix Midnight a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (Over 250 Pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I don’t think heavy sleepers would be uncomfortable on the Helix Midnight, but it will likely feel pretty soft to them. They may want to check out our best mattresses for heavy people or best firm mattresses instead.

Helix Midnight Mattress Performance
At the Sleepopolis mattress lab, we run several tests on the models we review so we can make even more specific recommendations that go beyond just sleeping position and body weight. Read more below to see how the Helix Midnight performed on these evaluations.
Helix Midnight Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is an important factor to consider when choosing a bed. It’s also closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed cushions sensitive pressure points throughout the body.
To see how a mattress relieves pressure, we roll out a special mat on top of the mattress, lie down on it, and see how much pressure is exerted on different parts of the body. The mat produces something called a pressure map — a color-coded chart that shows pressure areas on a gradient ranging from low pressure (blue) to high pressure (red). Take a look at the standard Helix Midnight’s pressure map below.
The pressure map shows that the Helix Midnight is adept at relieving pressure for sleepers with back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain. Notice how the map is mostly blue, with just a touch of green and yellow in all of those areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much motion a mattress is able to absorb. It tells you how disturbed you’ll feel by someone else’s tossing and turning on the opposite side of your bed.
We test a mattress’s motion transfer in several different ways. First, we simply lie down next to a colleague, both roll around, and see if we can feel each other’s movement. Then, we do the same thing again but with a full wine glass on the mattress. The less the liquid moves, the better the mattress is at isolating motion.
Our final test involves a seismometer. We place this device on one side of the mattress, and then we drop a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights on the other side. The seismometer measures the levels of disturbance. Here’s what the vibrations looked like on the Helix Midnight.
These results tell me that the standard Midnight is just average at isolating motion. Those vibrations were pretty high during the eight- and 12-inch ball drop. This probably won’t be too much of an issue for most sleepers, but if you sleep with a partner and either one of you are easily woken up, you might feel each other’s movement rippling across the mattress.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how easy it is to move around on a mattress. We found it very easy to move around on the Helix Midnight. This tells us that it’s a fantastic mattresses for sex and combination sleeping — both of which involve moving around and changing positions. You should have no problem staying mobile on this bed.
Cooling
The Helix Midnight, thanks to its breathable hybrid construction, sleeps cool. I also formally tested its temperature with a thermal gun, which uses thermal imaging to show how much a mattress heats up after lying down on it for 15 minutes. More than 15 degrees Fahrenheit indicates poor cooling. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling. As you can see it only heated up about 5 degrees, indicating good cooling. I can confidently say that this is an effective cooling mattress. But if you sleep especially hot, I recommend paying the extra charge for the optional GlacioTex pillow top, which should draw more body heat away from the mattress.
Edge Support
Another consideration when you’re buying a mattress is edge support. Can you spread out on your mattress and still feel supported, or do you feel like you have to stay toward the center of the bed? We test this by sitting on the edge of the mattress and seeing if we feel it collapse under our weight. If there’s little give, and we still feel lifted, it’s an indicator of strong edge support. Thanks to its two reinforced edges, the Helix Midnight has strong edge support. I felt secure while sitting on and lying near the end of the bed.
Helix Midnight Mattress Performance For Couples
When deciding if a mattress is an ideal fit for couples, we take several of the above performance areas into consideration. We think the Helix Midnight is one of the best mattresses for couples because it can cool down two bodies at once, is responsive enough for sex, and has strong enough edge support for both you and a partner to spread out. However, you may want to take the mattress’s just-okay motion-isolating abilities into account if either you or your partner are a light sleeper.
Finally, the Helix Midnight is responsive enough for sex. This is a plus for couples for obvious reasons.

Who I Recommend the Helix Midnight Mattress For
- I think the Helix Midnight is a good choice for couples. It has excellent cooling abilities, responsive materials for sex, and strong edge support, so you can use the whole mattress without fear of sinkage or sagging near the sides.
- Combination sleepers are likely to be happy with the Helix Midnight, as it is pretty responsive and offers some bounce. Sleepers shouldn’t feel “stuck” in the bed, and switching positions should feel easy.

Construction-wise, the Casper differs from the Helix Midnight in the fact that it’s made entirely of foam, with no springs. This bed is also firmer than the Helix Midnight, due to the density of its materials. Because of this, it scored a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale (the Helix Midnight scored a 6).
- Price: Before discounts, the Helix Midnight is just a little bit more expensive than the Casper.
- Sleeping position: Back sleepers and side sleepers are both going to be comfortable on either of these mattresses, and the Helix Midnight is going to be more comfortable for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: While the Casper sleeps fairly cool for a foam mattress, the Helix Midnight wins out because of all the airflow in its coils.
- Body weight: Heavy side sleepers could be comfortable on the Casper, but for the most part, anyone over 250 pounds should seek out a more supportive bed.

Like the Helix Midnight, the original DreamCloud has a hybrid construction, but it is a bit firmer (it scored a 7 on our firmness scale). This bed also has several luxurious features similar to what you’d find in a high-end hotel, including a cashmere-blend cover.
- Price: At the moment, the Helix Midnight and the DreamCloud are similarly priced before discounts.
- Sleeping position: Both options are excellent choices for back sleepers. Side sleepers should stick with the Helix Midnight, and while combination sleepers could be happy on both, they’ll probably find the DreamCloud to be more responsive. The Helix Midnight is the better choice for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: We gave both of these mattresses high marks for cooling, but the DreamCloud wins out because of its gel infusions.
- Body weight: Although neither option is the best choice for heavy sleepers, heavy back sleepers might be comfortable on the DreamCloud.

Helix Midnight vs Helix Moonlight
Also part of Helix’s original line of hybrid mattresses, the Moonlight is another soft option — much more so than the Helix Midnight, even though they have a similar construction.
- Price: All of the models in Helix’s core mattress line are the same price.
- Sleeping position: The Moonlight is best for side sleepers, and the Midnight is best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: I’d say that these beds have the same cooling capabilities due to their similar construction.
- Body weight: I’d tell heavy sleepers to steer clear of both mattresses and instead opt for the Helix Plus, which was built especially for larger body types.
