Helix Sleep is a brand best known for their high-quality, bed-in–a-box hybrid mattresses — which frequently make our roundups of best mattresses, by the way. But Helix is more than just a mattress company, as they also sell lots of other bedding products. In this review, I’ll be discussing the Helix Plush mattress topper.
Helix says this topper offers a “luxury plush feel” to your mattress. I put it to the test to find out for myself… and for you! In this review, I’ll go over what this topper is made of, what it feels like, and who I think it’s best for.

There are lots of things to consider when shopping for a mattress topper, such as your sleeping position, your desired mattress feel, if you sleep hot, your budget, your body type, and more. Here’s who I think the Helix Plush topper is a good fit for and who should consider buying a different topper.
Who I recommend the Helix Plush mattress topper for
- I think this topper is a great option for stomach sleepers. It will add that extra bit of plushness to your mattress without making the bed too soft, as stomach sleepers need a firm sleep surface.
- The Helix Plush topper is also a great choice for people with allergies. It’s completely machine washable and hypoallergenic.
- Hot sleepers will appreciate that this topper stays temperature-neutral. Its bamboo-blend fabric is breathable, which helps with temperature regulation.
Who I don’t recommend the Helix Plush mattress topper for
- If you’re looking to radically alter the feel of your mattress, the Helix Plush topper may not be the best choice. I didn’t find it to make a significant change in firmness on any of the mattresses I tested it with.
- If you’re looking for a topper that offers a lot of cushioning or significant pressure relief, like many memory foam mattress toppers do, the Helix may not be right for you.
- If you toss and turn a lot at night, you might want a topper that is more secure to the mattress. While this topper does have a skirt, I felt that it wasn’t very tight to the mattress and could easily come loose.
What is the Helix Plush Mattress Topper Made Of?
This topper is available in six different sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. I tested the queen size topper for this review.
Cover: The outer cover of the Helix Plush topper is made of a blend of 70 percent polyester and 30 percent bamboo rayon. The cover is quilted with baffle box stitching to keep the fill evenly distributed.
Fill: The fill of the Helix Plush topper is 100 percent polyester fiber fill. It’s very similar to the polyester fiber down alternative used in many pillows and duvets.
Skirt: The skirt of the topper attaches it to the mattress like a fitted sheet. It’s made of a blend of 70 percent polyester and 30 percent cotton.

I personally tested the Helix Plush topper to get a good sense of its feel. I laid on the topper in different sleeping positions and tried it on different mattresses.
After testing, I found the Helix Plush mattress topper more similar to a mattress pad than most other toppers I’ve tested. It doesn’t offer much contouring, conforming, or cushioning for pressure points that most other toppers do, because it is much thinner and uses fiber fill. However, it does add a “mini-pillow top” effect to the top layer of the mattress, giving the bed a more luxurious feel.
Here’s what I experienced when testing the Helix Plush topper on mattresses of different firmness levels. (Spoiler alert — I didn’t really experience a change in firmness on any of these mattresses.)
Soft: I didn’t notice much change in the firmness or feel of the soft mattress with the Helix Plush topper. However, it did add that nice quilted layer. I think the Helix Plush topper on a soft mattress would be a good option for side sleepers looking to add a touch of luxury to their bed.
Medium-firm: The same was true with the medium-firm mattress. I think adding the Helix Plush would be a good option for back sleepers who want that quilted, pillow-top feel in the comfort layers. I wouldn’t recommend adding the Helix Plush topper to a medium-firm mattress if you are seeking more pressure relief or softness.
Firm: Again, the firmness was not altered by adding the Helix Plush topper to a firm mattress. I think the Helix Plush topper is a good option for stomach sleepers to add to a firm mattress. Stomach sleepers need firm support to keep their hips from sinking into their mattress, but many firm mattresses have smooth surfaces with little plushness. This topper could add a bit without making the bed feel too soft.

The Helix Plush mattress topper adds a thin layer of plushness and quilting to the top of a mattress — much like a micro version of a pillowtop. Thanks to the bamboo-blend fabric, which allows for breathability and airflow, this topper doesn’t trap heat and should sleep temperature-neutral.
It’s a good option for stomach sleepers who already have a firm mattress, as they can add a touch of softness to their bed without causing their hips to sink. Similarly, back and side sleepers who already like the firmness of their mattress could add the Helix Plush topper for an extra-luxurious feel.
However, this topper doesn’t dramatically change the feel or firmness of a mattress. If you’re looking to add a topper to relieve shoulder, hip, or back pain, this may not be the best option. These three products are similar but generally serve different purposes. A mattress topper usually provides additional padding, softness, or cushioning to a mattress. A mattress pad adds a minimal amount of padding, but also helps protect your mattress. A mattress protector is usually waterproof and adds no softness to the mattress. All three can add durability and extend the life of your mattress.
