Helix Wood Bed Frame Video Review

Do I Need a Bed Frame?

There are many different types of bed frames on the market today, like metal frames, platform frames, and even adjustable bed frames. With so many options, it’s important to narrow down what is most important to you — factors like durability, aesthetics, storage, easy assembly, etc.

Let’s go over who I think is a good match for the Helix Wood Bed Frame and who should consider another option — see our best bed frames for more bed frame recommendations.

Who Should Buy the Helix Wood Bed Frame

  • The Helix Wood Bed Frame is a great pick for people with a minimalistic aesthetic. The use of hardwoods and Japanese joinery gives this frame a simple and elegant look.
  • This frame is a great option for easy assembly, as you don’t need any tools to put it together.
  • The Helix Wood Bed Frame is a good choice for heavier sleepers, couples, or people with really large mattresses, as it can support over 1,000 pounds.

Who Should Not Buy the Helix Wood Bed Frame

  • This frame isn’t a great pick for people who want a more extravagant or noticeable bed frame, as the Helix Wood Bed Frame has a very simple look. It also isn’t compatible with headboards, so you can’t add anything to it.
  • This frame isn’t a great choice for people who want a lot of underbed storage space, as it has a low profile.
  • If you want a taller bed frame or the option to add a box spring, this frame is not a great choice for you, as it is not compatible with box springs or additional foundations.

How Do I Set Up the Helix Wood Bed Frame?

Now let’s go over how to set up the Helix Wood Bed Frame. This frame is simple to set up and doesn’t require any tools.

Here’s how you set up the Helix Wood Bed Frame:

  1. First, you’ll want to clear the space you are going to set the frame up in.
  2. Next, unbox all the pieces of the frame and lay them out on the floor.
  3. Find the two side rails — you can identify them by the notches along the inside — and lay them out across from each other.
  4. Then find the head and foot rails — you can identify them by the single, center notch — and lay them out to form the shape of the frame on the floor.
  5. Now, look for the four leg pieces. The notched side will face up, so you can slide the head and foot rails into the leg’s notches.
  6. Once you have the head and foot rails attached to the legs, slide the side rails into the legs. You should start to see the frame coming together.
  7. Then find the center support beam. This piece is thicker than the slats, so you should be able to identify it. Slide it lengthwise into the notches on the head and foot rails.
  8. Then find the slats. Lay the slats into the notches along the side rails until all the slats are laid out on the frame.
  9. And you’re done!

What is Helix Wood Bed Frame Made Of?

Now let’s take a closer look at what this frame is made of.

The Helix Wood Bed Frame is made of — you guessed it — wood. More specifically, the bed rails are made of 100 percent Appalachian maple and poplar, which are hardwoods. The legs are made of 100 percent Appalachian maple and the slats are made from 100 percent Southern yellow pine. The frame is assembled with Japanese-style joinery, where the pieces of wood are cut to fit together, instead of requiring metal hardware. In addition to easy assembly, the Japanese joinery gives the frame a minimalist aesthetic.

The wood used in this frame is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.

The Helix Wood Bed Frame comes in two different finishes: white or natural wood. With both finishes, Helix says the finishes used on the frames are water-based and have low volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The use of slats on this frame means it does not require a box spring or additional foundation, as the slats provide the necessary support for a mattress. Additionally, this bed has about eight inches of underbed clearance.

My Verdict on the Helix Wood Bed Frame

All in all, I think the Helix Wood Bed Frame is a solid option, available at a reasonable price. It can be challenging these days to find at-home assembly furniture made of hardwood, instead of plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF), so I appreciate Helix’s commitment to providing a reasonably-priced solid wood option. I think this bed offers an aesthetically pleasing, minimalist look that many people would love — especially with two color options.

The Helix Wood Bed Frame is comparable to the Thuma bed frame, another easy-assembly, solid wood bed frame sold online. Having tried both, I will say the Thuma has a more high-quality look and feel overall, but it is also significantly more expensive than the Helix Wood Bed Frame. Still, I think the Helix Wood Bed Frame offers a great value for the price. It uses Appalachian hardwood and pine slats, and clocks in under $1,000 for a queen size frame.

My biggest complaint with this frame is the slats don’t lie perfectly flat when you are laying them on the frame. Once I added a mattress on top, I think it kept them in place, but still I think a strip of Velcro or something similar would be helpful to keep those slats in place.
