Best King-Size Mattresses of 2025

At 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, a king-size mattress can be a sensible choice for anyone who needs more space than what’s offered by a full, twin, or queen bed. Maybe you have a partner or pet, a tendency to sleep sprawled out like a snow angel, or simply a spacious bedroom that looks too empty with a smaller mattress. No matter the reason, you’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for a comfy and expansive new bed.

When searching for any mattress, not just a king-sized one, it’s important to find a bed that provides soothing pressure relief while still being supportive enough to prop the spine into proper alignment. According to Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, to find a bed with the ideal balance of these two qualities, you’ll want to look for something that combines “medium firmness, contouring materials like memory foam or latex, zoned support, responsive materials, pocketed coils, layered construction, strong edge support, and proper alignment for the spine.”

With all that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the best king-size mattresses for a variety of body types, budgets, and sleeping positions. To make these recommendations, not only do I put each bed through an extensive battery of tests that measure performance factors such as cooling, motion isolation, and pressure relief — I also vet every product’s trial period, shipping policy, and warranty. My list includes a variety of king beds that range from $1,349 to $2,783 (for an average of $2,137, before discounts), so there should be something here to fit your budget. In 2024, Sleepopolis helped 12,544 people find their perfect bed—I know we can help you find yours, too.

Our Top Pick for King Mattresses

A king mattress is often favored by people over 250 pounds, combination sleepers who tend to switch positions throughout the night, and couples — all of whom benefit from strong edge support. The Nectar gives them just that, despite being made of memory foam. The brand’s recent redesign has added more durability and responsiveness to the bed’s structure.

What I Look for in a King Mattress

Support

I know the support of your mattress is important to you, so I was careful to test each of the mattresses thoroughly so you can be sure you’re getting a comfortable king-sized mattress that is still supportive. To gauge a bed’s support, I pay close attention to how I feel while lying on a mattress, including whether or not my spine is properly and comfortably aligned. I also look at the components of the mattress to determine which provides a strong base of support, such as the innerspring coil unit or core layer of dense memory foam.

Edge Support

We’ve found that one of the benefits of a king mattress is that the additional size allows you to fully spread out and use the whole surface of the bed. However, if a mattress has weak edges, you lose some of that valuable space. Your mattress might also deteriorate faster if it has weak edges. Because of this, I personally tested the strength and support of all of the edges on these mattresses to make sure they’ll hold up under your body weight and maintain shape over the long haul.

Trial Period and Warranty

We know that king-sized mattresses can be pricey investments, but if your bed has a generous trial period and/or warranty, you get the assurance of longevity. I know this is important when investing in a big-ticket item like a king-size mattress, so I looked into the trial period and warranty for all of the mattresses in this list to help you find the one best suited to your budget and needs.

Pros of the Nectar
The Nectar offers a memory foam feel while still being responsive, making it perfect for combination sleepers.
Back sleepers should feel supported, but pleasantly cushioned on the Nectar. They’ll also appreciate the above-average edge support, which allows you to spread out.
This is a great memory foam bed for sex, as it is surprisingly responsive.
Cons of the Nectar

The Nectar Classic is a memory foam mattress that provides solid support for most light to average weight sleepers. The cushioning memory foam allows for plenty of pain relief around the lower lumbar spine. Most back sleepers and side sleepers should enjoy the pressure relief. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“I think the Nectar Classic does a great job of relieving back pain. The pressure map test results show a lot of blue and green on our backs, meaning back sleepers should experience good pressure relief from the Nectar.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

We think that those wanting an all-foam bed that’s supportive enough to help relieve back pain will love the Nectar Classic. Its contouring memory foam helps with pressure relief around the lower lumbar spine. Unlike other all-foam mattresses, the Nectar provides sufficient support so you don’t sink too far in of the material and throw your spine out of alignment. I was also impressed with the Nectar’s edge support, which is an indication you’ll be able to make full use of your king bed’s surface. Nectar offers a generous 365-night trial and lifetime warranty with this mattress.

How the Nectar Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

Memory foam typically absorbs motion quite well, but the Nectar’s foams are more on the bouncier side. I noticed a lot of movement in both our human and water glass tests, so I wouldn’t recommend this bed to light sleepers with a restless partner.

Support 5/5

The Nectar’s firmer foam construction is geared toward support, as I said above. Three layers of specialized foam, including the 8-inch base layer of ultra-dense memory foam, work to keep your spine in proper alignment and provide a lifted feel.

Cooling 4.5/5

The Nectar’s heat-wicking cover really pulls its weight in the cooling department. I noticed the surface felt colder than expected in the studio, and the heat gun only recorded a 6-degree increase in temperature. If you’re a memory foam fan that sleeps hot, the Nectar might be the bed for you.

Edge Support 4.5/5

Sitting on the edge of the Nectar, I only saw 2 inches of sinkage on my tape measure. I also felt pretty secure lying on my side and back at the perimeter. This bed should be good if you like to spread out and make use of the full surface area.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

Memory foam is known for its pressure relief, and during my pressure map test, the graphic showed minimal pressure buildup while I was lying on my back. This tells me that the Nectar should be a good mattress for individuals who suffer from back pain. Side sleeping, I found moderate pressure, or lots of green, at the shoulders. I found a little yellow at the hip, indicating more pressure. This means that folks with severe hip pain might want more pressure relief, but those with shoulder pain should be alright.

What Our Tester Says

“I think memory foam lovers should be happy on the Nectar. This bed has a classic memory foam feel, so there’s lots of sinkage, contouring, and pressure relief. This can be great for anyone with shoulder pain or hip pain since it gives them cushioning at sensitive pressure points.”

“I think the Nectar does a great job relieving back pain, especially for back sleepers. The pressure map results above also make me think this bed is a great fit for any sleepers with hip pain.”

Helix has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. The Midnight is one of their medium models. It has enough contouring for side sleepers, but should still be supportive enough for back sleepers, as long as they don’t mind a softer bed. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I like the Helix Midnight Luxe for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-soft to medium-firm feel should give these folks the right balance of comfort and support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

Helix is known for its line of customizable, high-quality mattresses, which gives sleepers so many options to find their best match. I’m especially impressed by one of the brand’s most versatile options, the Midnight Luxe, which is the luxurious upgrade of its popular Midnight mattress. This king-size hybrid has a breathable Tencel cover and packs in two additional inches of comfort foam, as well as a plush pillow top layer. I felt lots of cushion and pressure relief when lying down on the Midnight Luxe, but also enough firmness and support to decide it has an overall medium-firm feel. This bed comes with a 100-night trial and a 15-year warranty.

How the Helix Midnight Luxe Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

We test a bed’s ability to absorb motion by mimicking a partner’s tossing and turning on one side of the bed and using a seismograph to record the effects of those movements on the other side. In some cases, we also set a glass of water on one side of the bed and attempt to disrupt it by bouncing on the other side. For the Helix Midnight Luxe, most of the small movements were stifled by the mattress’s foam layers, but the bigger ones caused a bit of a splash. All in all, the Midnight Luxe isn’t the best at isolating motion, but it might satisfy couples who aren’t especially light sleepers.

Support 4.5/5

The Helix Midnight Luxe’s innerspring coils make up the bulk of its support, and are “zoned” to ensure there’s firmer support for the lower back and more sinkage around areas like the shoulders. The result makes this an excellent pick for most sleepers, especially back and side sleepers, who should appreciate its combination of lift and contouring.

Cooling 4.5/5

To test out a mattress’s cooling ability, I start by tracking how I feel when I lie down on it. For less subjective data, I also use a thermal imaging gun to measure how much the surface temperature rises after I rest on it for five minutes. Any mattress that heats up by 15 degrees Fahrenheit or more has poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.

After lying on the Midnight Luxe, I found that the temperature only rose 3.3 degrees, making it a pretty cool bed. The bed’s Tencel cover (and optional GlacioTex cooling cover) contributes to its impressive temperature regulation.

Edge Support 4/5

Another important factor for king beds is edge support. After all, there’s typically more than one person sleeping on a king. Edge support, or the strength of a mattress’s perimeter, tells me whether or not folks will be able to lie on its edges and make full use of the surface. The Helix Midnight Luxe has reinforced edges on all sides of the mattress. During testing, I sat and lay on the perimeter of the bed and measured how far the mattress dipped down with tape measure. I found the sinkage to be minimal, and felt secure in both positions.

Pressure Relief 5/5

To test pressure relief, I roll a specialized mat out onto the mattress and lie on it on my back and side. The mat then uses colorful thermal imaging to record if any tension builds up where my body makes contact with the mattress. Blue and green mean less pressure, while red and yellow indicate more pressure. For the Helix Midnight Luxe, the graphic or “map” was mostly blue, with some green as I slept on my side. Overall, I recommend the mattress for sleepers in both of these positions.

What Our Tester Says

“The Helix Midnight Luxe has an extra pillow top layer and zoned support in its construction. It feels more cushioning than the standard Midnight, but, in the end, I also gave it a 6 out of 10 rating on our firmness scale.”

“The coils have zoned support, which means that they’re softer at the shoulders for added pressure relief and firmer at the hips to help promote a neutral spinal alignment. This is a wonderful pick for back and side sleepers, and anyone who likes a contouring feel without missing out on support.” — Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

We found that the Saatva’s bouncy innerspring construction offers firm support, keeping my spine aligned when I lay down on it. Built with a coil-on-coil construction, this mattress offers a traditional innerspring feel that still feels cushioned and comfortable thanks to a Euro top layer. The durable steel coils in its support layer prevent sagging and provide lots of back support and spinal alignment, which is important for sleepers with back pain. I also love how the Saatva offers three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Firm, and Luxury Firm), so it should work for most body types and sleeping positions. This bed comes with a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty.

How the Saatva Classic Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3/5

The Saatva’s high innerspring coil count contributed to the bed’s lackluster motion isolation in the studio. I could feel and see the bounciness in our tests. If you sleep with a restless partner and are easily disturbed by their movements at night, the Saatva might not be an ideal choice.

Support 5/5

The double-innerspring construction and mix of softer and firmer foams work together to make the Saatva Classic supportive enough to hold your spine in a comfortable, neutral position. This is especially key for sleepers with back pain, which can be caused or exacerbated by a misaligned spine.

Cooling 4.5/5

In my testing, I found the Saatva to feel pretty cool to the touch. This was backed up by the temperature gun test, which only showed about a 9-degree increase in temperature after five minutes of lying on the mattress. Overall, hot sleepers should be pretty happy with the Saatva.

Edge Support 5/5

When testing this mattress, I found some outstanding edge support results. While lying on or just sitting on the mattress, I felt lifted — the mattress didn’t sink or collapse at all under my weight.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

The pressure map for this bed was mostly blue for back sleeping, indicating zero pressure buildup. For side sleeping, there was only some green on the sides and hips. Folks who have pain concerns about these two areas may want to go with the softest Saatva model.

What Our Tester Says

“I found the Saatva Classic to be a bouncy, high-quality mattress with durability and great edge support. The coil on coil construction helps with support and spinal alignment, making this a good option for sleepers with back pain.”

“Average weight side sleepers will want to try the Plush Soft model instead of the Luxury Firm in order to get more contouring around their shoulders and hips. However, I think the Luxury Firm could work for some combination side sleepers who don’t spend the whole night in this sleeping position.”

The DreamCloud Original is a hybrid mattress with a luxurious feel that back sleepers in particular will love. The coil layer keeps the bed breathable and cool while still being supportive. The memory foam top layer helps make the mattress comfortable, and gives it that luxurious and contouring feel without being too soft, ranking as a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

What our tester says:

“The DreamCloud got a 7 from me because it strikes a nice balance between pressure relief and support. There’s some gentle cushioning up top, as well as some firm bounce in the bed’s core. I think this feel could work well for anyone who likes to feel more lifted up by their bed rather than stuck in it..” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Expert Opinion

The DreamCloud Original mattress is a hybrid bed, meaning that it’s made with layers of foam and a layer of innerspring coils. The coils provide the necessary amount of support through the back and hips to promote a comfortable, neutral position for your spine. Above the coils, the mattress has a cashmere blend cover, a layer of memory foam, a foam transition layer, and a base layer, all of which work together to create a balanced, luxurious sleeping experience. I found the DreamCloud to be a fairly firm, springy mattress that should work best for back and combination sleepers — and an overall value with generous policies that include a 365-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

How the DreamCloud Original Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

For a hybrid, I thought that the DreamCloud did pretty well at isolating motion. That said, I probably wouldn’t recommend it if you or your partner is a particularly light sleeper, as large movements like getting in and out of bed will definitely be felt.

Support 4.5/5

The bulk of the DreamCloud’s support comes from its coil unit. Overall the bed has a firmer, lifted feel that I think is best suited to back sleepers, as I found my spine felt comfortably aligned when I lay back on it.

Cooling 4/5

The coils in the DreamCloud’s bottom layer leave plenty of room for airflow. I only saw a 7-degree increase on my heat gun test, which makes this bed a good option for people who sleep hot or like to stay cool throughout the night.

Edge Support 4.5/5

The DreamCloud’s sturdy coils suggest it’s more durable than the average bed and also give it solid edge support, which is important for a king-size mattress. You want to be able to spread out and use the entire bed, and the DreamCloud’s resilient edges allow you to do just that.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

On the pressure map the DreamCloud showed mostly blues in the back-sleeping position, and some green in the side-sleeping position. Because of that, I’d say the mattress is likely too firm for strict side sleepers, who might want more cushioning around their shoulders and hips.

What Our Tester Says

“The DreamCloud is made with high-quality materials and has gel infusions and coils, which help the bed sleep super-cool, while still being both supportive and contouring. It has a very luxurious feel because of its construction.”

The DreamCloud does a stellar job relieving tension around the lower back. As I sank into this bed, I could feel its top layers of foam filling in the space at my lumbar region for some pleasant pressure relief.”

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

We think this pillow-top hybrid mattress by WinkBeds is a match made in heaven for couples. First, it has strong edge support, so you can use the entire surface without feeling like its sides might crumble beneath you. I also found the WinkBed to be bouncy and supportive when I lay down on it, which is a nice perk for sex because it helps you change positions easily. Another win for couples: The bed’s comfort foams are infused with cooling gels that work to prevent the trapping of body heat. And last, I recommend couples look for a bed with low motion transfer to prevent you from feeling your partner tossing and turning at night, or vice versa.

While testing the WinkBed’s Luxury Firm model, I didn’t see too many movement vibrations on our seismograph, thus indicating overall low motion transfer — and a likely peaceful night of sleep. The WinkBed is also available in Softer, Firmer, and Plus versions, which makes it one of our most versatile options.

How the WinkBed Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

One of the most important factors in a mattress for couples is motion transfer, which I test in our lab by dropping a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights. In these tests, I noticed less disturbance than I expected from a bouncy hybrid like the WinkBed.

Support 4.5/5

The sturdy support provided by the WinkBed’s coil unit, along with cushioning from the Euro pillow top, help to keep your spine in its proper position. For more comfortable, targeted support for dedicated side or stomach sleepers, you can choose the Softer or Firmer models, respectively.

Cooling 4.5/5

Tall pocketed coils allow for lots of airflow through the WinkBed, while gel-infused foam and a Tencel cover promote cooling and contribute to the bed’s overall temperature-regulating ability. I didn’t think this mattress felt especially cool to the touch, but our heat gun recorded only 7 degrees of increased temperature after I lay on it for five minutes.

Edge Support 4/5

I only measured about half an inch of sinkage with my tape measure when I sat on the WinkBed’s edge. The problem came when I lay down near the edge — I felt like I was going to slide right off.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

We put the Luxury Firm WinkBed model through the pressure map test and found mostly blue when I lay on it on my back, indicating low pressure buildup for back sleepers. The readings showed some green on the hips and shoulders when I laid on my side, so if you’re a dedicated side sleeper, you might want to stick to the Softer model.

What Our Tester Says

“I’m confident that couples should find everything they need in the WinkBed, including cooling, responsiveness for sex, exceptional motion isolation, and plenty of edge support.”

“I think the WinkBed is an especially good fit for sleepers with back pain, with the pressure map almost entirely blue. This indicates low pressure and even weight distribution, which is essential for avoiding soreness in the upper or lower back.”

As an affordable option with a medium-firm feel, we think that the Silk & Snow Hybrid should appeal to a wide variety of sleepers, including back sleepers, side sleepers, hot sleepers, and budget shoppers. What our tester says:

“The Silk & Snow Hybrid is a great middle ground firmness for those who don’t want an ultra-firm bed, but also want to feel well-supported.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

Medium-firm beds are some of the most common in the mattress market because of their versatile feel that can accommodate a variety of different sleepers. The Silk & Snow Hybrid is one such mattress — we rated it at a 6.5 out of 10 for firmness, a truly medium-firm feel. This mattress packs both coils and foam into its construction, offering high-quality support and comfort that far outclasses its reasonable price tag. For a king mattress, it’s rare to find a sub-$1,000 price point, so this only sweetens the deal. It also comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a generous 15-year warranty.

How the Silk & Snow Hybrid Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

For a hybrid, this bed is a champ at absorbing motion. Small movements should be relatively stifled, but light sleepers might feel larger ones (like their partner getting in and out of bed).

Support 4.5/5

The coils of the Silk & Snow Hybrid are zoned to give you necessary lift in the middle of the bed. We felt our spines were aligned, especially in the back and side-sleeping positions.

Cooling 4/5

Our temperature gun recorded about an 8-degree increase after five minutes of lying on the bed, a sign of good cooling. It definitely lives up to the “Snow” in its name.

Edge Support 3.5/5

Lying along the edge of the Silk & Snow Hybrid wasn’t too much of an issue. However, when we sat on the edge, we were close to sliding off.

Pressure Relief 4/5

The pressure map was mostly blue for back sleeping. When we tested it for side sleeping, we only saw a bit of green on the hips and shoulders, which corresponds to how we felt a little bit of pressure buildup near the latter.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress combines a foam comfort layer and sturdy coils. This combination of materials makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. It comes in three firmness levels, and we recommend the Medium model for most back sleepers. It’s a great choice for shoppers who are looking for a new mattress on a budget. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night. I also think the Signature Hybrid could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice, firm edge support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

We recommend that back sleepers opt for a medium-firm mattress that can give them pressure relief at the lumbar region while also being supportive enough to keep their spines in a neutral alignment. Based on my testing, I think back sleepers will find what they’re looking for with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. It’s constructed with both individually encased coils (which give the bed its support) and soft memory foam (which gives the bed its pressure relief) — and you can get it in a Soft, Medium, or Firm model with a 120-night trial and 10-year warranty. I tested out the Medium and loved how it felt against my lower back.

How the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

Although I’d recommend the Signature Hybrid for couples (because it’s supportive and sleeps cool), it’s worth mentioning that I felt quite a bit of disturbance during our motion isolation tests. I could feel most of my testing partner’s movements, big and small.

Support 4.5/5

There’s a comfortable, sinking feeling when you lie on top of the Signature Hybrid, but after a few minutes, you’ll also get a slight lift from the Ascension springs. This tells me that the mattress has enough support to hold my spine in a natural position without sacrificing cushion.

Cooling 4.5/5

The air keeps moving through this mattress’s coils, and my temperature test showed that. The heat gun showed an increase of fewer than 8 degrees, which makes this bed a good option if you sleep hot.

Edge Support 4.5/5

I felt stable when I lay and sat on the edges of the Signature Hybrid, though I noticed quite a bit more sinking in the latter position. I measured about 3 inches of sinkage with my tape measure, to be specific.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

When I laid down on the Signature Hybrid, I felt pressure relief throughout my body, but particularly through my lower back. This was confirmed by my pressure map test, which showed almost all blue through the back area. Side sleepers might experience more pressure buildup than they’d like in the hips and shoulders, though.

What Our Tester Says

“While I did experience increased pressure around my hips and shoulders when laying on my side, the Signature Hybrid remains an excellent option for back sleepers and anyone seeking a true medium-firm mattress.”

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

Available in three different firmness levels (Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm) the Nolah Evolution is a versatile bed that provides lots of contouring and pressure relief, no matter which model you choose. The plushness comes from the brand’s proprietary AirFoam, which created a comfortable, sinking feel when I tested the mattress. The soft comfort foams in the upper layers provide a cozy, hug-like sensation, while the coil base layer supplies plenty of support for an overall balanced feel. I’d recommend the Plush version of the Evolution for shoppers seeking a soft mattress, but even the Luxury Firm model I tested provided abundant cushioning. Nolah gives you 120 nights to try out this mattress and provides a lifetime warranty.

How the Nolah Evolution Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5/5

The Nolah’s cushy surface foams do a good job of mitigating the bounciness of the coils beneath, allowing some absorption of smaller movements like tossing and turning. Still, I noticed bigger movements like my co-tester getting in and out of bed, which could be a dealbreaker for some light sleepers.

Support 4.5/5

Nolah’s HDMax coils are arranged into three distinct zones of varying firmnesses to provide more lift in the center where it’s needed most. This allows for proper spinal alignment and support, which is balanced out by the contouring foams on top.

Cooling 4.5/5

With breathable foam and airflow-promoting coils, I think the Nolah Evolution is a great choice for hot sleepers who still want some of that cushy foam feeling.

Edge Support 4.5/5

I felt fairly supported as I sat and lay down on the Nolah Evolution’s edges. I’d wager that you could use the whole surface area of the mattress without issue.

Pressure Relief 5/5

On the Evolution’s pressure map test, I saw low pressure (blue) while I was back sleeping, and I saw green at the shoulders and some yellow at the hip while I was side sleeping. These results tell me that, overall, the Luxury Firm model of the Nolah Evolution is an effective mattress for joint pain. The softer Plush model will likely provide even more pressure relief for those with lots of sensitivity in these areas.

What Our Tester Says

“One of my favorite features is the soft pillow top. It’s a great touch for anyone [living with] shoulder or hip pain, as it allows you to sink into bed for a plusher feel.”

The Nolah Evolution did a great job offering sinkage and pressure relief around my lumbar region. I really liked the Luxury Firm model, but I appreciate how there are two other firmness options for anyone who wants a softer or firmer feel.”

“I’d recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for most back and stomach sleepers.I think these sleepers will get the needed pressure relief and contouring around the lower back and hips. This mattress does a wonderful job at offering body contouring while still helping the sleeper stay elevated and lifted as well. The layers of foam should provide comfort while the coil system should offer lots of support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

Bear mattresses stand out from other beds due to an optional cooling cover that’s woven with a material called Celliant. Celliant is soft, breathable, and designed to promote muscle recovery and blood flow, which makes the Bear a popular choice for athletes and anyone looking to recover from an active day (while I haven’t verified the healing properties of Celliant myself, there are many clinical trials that have). Overall I found this mattress to be comfortable and cool, with plenty of support for a wide range of body types and sleep styles, thanks to its three different firmness options — Soft, Medium, and Firm. I tested out the Medium, which came in at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, or on the slightly softer end. It’s worth noting that Bear offers a 120-night trial and a lifetime warranty for this mattress.

How the Bear Elite Hybrid Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

I was impressed by the Bear Elite’s motion isolation ability. I could tell my testing partner was moving on the other side of the bed, but it didn’t disturb me. The wine glass didn’t move or spill either, and the seismograph only showed movement results for major disturbances.

Support 4.5/5

The Bear Elite’s individually wrapped coils provide solid support beneath its foams. I found the Medium model to be especially comfortable, and felt like it kept my spine in a natural position when I laid on my back and stomach.

Cooling 4.5/5

I’ve already mentioned the bed’s option Celliant cover that makes it feel cool to the touch, but further cooling comes from the Bear Elite Hybrid’s bottom layer of coils, which leaves plenty of room for airflow. The temperature gun only measured a 10-degree increase after five minutes of lying on the bed, which is in line with our parameters for a cooling bed.

Edge Support 4.5/5

The edge-to-edge coils are to thank for the Bear Elite’s solid support along the perimeter of the mattress. I felt secure when I was sitting and lying on the edge of this mattress.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

The pressure map for the Medium Bear Elite was astoundingly blue when I lay on my back and my stomach, indicating very little pressure buildup. However, the small spots of green on the hip and shoulder while I was on my side might mean that folks with especially sensitive joints should stick to the softest model.

What Our Tester Says

“Bear claims that Celliant absorbs your body’s energy, then reflects it back to you to assist with blood flow and muscle recovery. Full disclosure: we haven’t tested this ourselves at Sleepopolis, but the material has undergone several clinical trials that you can read about here. I can say that, like phase change material, Celliant sleeps nice and cool.”

“On my back, there is very little pressure buildup and only slight pressure around my hips and lower lumbar region, indicating that the Bear Elite Hybrid may work well to relieve pressure.”

Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

The Leesa Sapira Chill is a hybrid mattress, available in three firmness levels. We tested the Medium-Firm model and felt it was just softer than average, but could still work for all three sleeping positions — a rare find among mattresses. It also has some effective cooling technology built into it, which helps to keep sleepers cool throughout the night. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I really think the medium-firm model is a great fit for all sleeping positions. Yep, the Leesa Sapira Chill is one of those unicorn mattresses that provides a great balance of comfort and support for a wide range of sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

Expert Opinion

The name doesn’t lie — if you’re searching for the best cooling king-size mattress, you should consider the Leesa Sapira Chill. It’s a hybrid mattress that was built with cooling in every layer of its construction, from the gel memory foam in the comfort layer to a support layer of coils that leave plenty of room for airflow. Even the cover was made with fibers designed to keep the skin at an optimal temperature of 88 degrees. In terms of feel, I found it to be soft yet responsive, as well as pretty cool. Leesa offers a 100-night trial and 10-year warranty with the Sapira Chill.

How the Leesa Sapira Chill Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

Motion isolation was pretty solid for the Leesa Sapira Chill. I didn’t feel any small movements, though some lighter sleepers might wake up from bigger movements that can jostle the bed.

Support 4.5/5

The pocketed springs in this mattress act as the main support system for this bed, and I think they do their job nicely, keeping me aligned and comfortably lifted. Its soft but supportive feel should work well for back and side sleepers especially.

Cooling 4.5/5

As we’ve mentioned, the Leesa Sapira Chill felt cool to the touch and only rose by 6.3 degrees after I laid on it, which further drives home that this is a good mattress for hot sleepers.

Edge Support 4.5/5

I was impressed by this bed’s edge support. It didn’t matter if I was lying or sitting at the perimeter of the bed, I felt stable and secure in each position.

Pressure Relief 5/5

On the pressure map for the medium-firm Leesa Sapira Chill, I saw mostly blue when I lay on my back and side. For the latter, there was a touch of green in the hips, which can easily be addressed by purchasing the softer Plush model if you’re worried about hip pain.

Big Fig offers returns and exchanges after 14 days of the 120-night sleep trial

Designed specifically for heavier sleepers, the Big Fig mattress is exceptionally durable and supportive. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be comfortable on this bed, given its score of 8 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. For more information on the Big Fig, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Big Fig is a home run for heavy sleepers, and as I’ve mentioned, it’s made to hold up to 1,100 pounds. This includes singles and couples alike. This mattress sleeps cool, and in a couple’s case, helps dissipate double the body heat. Finally, this bed is made with high-quality, durable materials, which makes it a valuable long-term investment.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

A Note On Weight and Body Type

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds). We consider heavy sleepers to be anyone over 250 pounds, and they tend to need more support to prevent them from sinking too far into the layers.

Expert Opinion

We’ve found that a king-size mattress is a great option for sleepers who have larger bodies, as it gives them plenty of room to spread out. But heavy sleepers will also want to make sure they have adequate support, which they’re bound to get with the Big Fig. Designed specifically with heavier sleepers in mind, the Big Fig (which is short for “bigger figure”) is built with extremely durable materials. During testing, I experienced the right amount of pressure relief and support while back sleeping and stomach sleeping—even for an average-weight sleeper under 250 pounds. My 6’7″, 270-pound colleague also tried out this mattress and had even better results; based on this, I think heavyweight sleepers should be very comfortable in all three sleeping positions. Big Fig offers a 120-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty with this bed.

How the Big Fig Performed in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

I didn’t detect a lot of motion transfer when testing the Big Fig, probably thanks to the thick layers of foam on top of the coil unit. So, I’d say it’s a solid choice for couples.

Support 5/5

The comfort layer contains a latex foam that’s bouncy, responsive, and supportive, while also giving heavy people a bit of pressure relief. Toward the bottom of the mattress, a support layer of individually wrapped coils should keep these folks lifted, preventing them from sinking too far into the mattress.

Cooling 4/5

We found the Big Fig to be a cooling mattress, thanks to gel infusions in the perforated foam and a coil layer that promotes good air circulation.

Edge Support 5/5

I didn’t see much compression at the perimeter of the bed when I lay or sat near it. Heavyweight sleepers should be able to make full use of the mattress surface area if they need it.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

I’m an average-weight sleeper, so the pressure map looks very yellow for me. However, I think a lot of the firmness I feel will be wiped away by a heavier body, making this bed far more comfortable for sleepers over 230 pounds. That said, I do still think some heavier side sleepers might find this bed to be too firm to contour the hips and shoulders.

What Our Tester Says

“Specifically designed for the plus size sleeper, I think the Big Fig should offer a great mix of support and comfort to heavy stomach sleepers and heavy back sleepers alike.”

“I don’t think the average person would be disrupted by their partner moving around on this bed. I think the thick foam layers and the pocketed coil system of the Big Fig do a great job of isolating motion.”

Who Should Buy a King-Size Mattress

Who Will Love a King Bed
Couples and those with pets: King mattresses offer more sleeping space, which is especially nice for couples. It can also be great for those who need enough room to sleep with pets.
Restless sleepers: If you’re a restless sleeper, you’ll have room to toss and turn without disturbing a partner or falling off the bed.
Tall or heavy sleepers: Taller or heavier sleepers should appreciate the extra space offered.
Families: King-sized mattresses are perfect for co-sleeping or watching family shows and movies.
Who Won’t Love a King Bed
Budget shoppers: King-size mattresses are more expensive than other mattress sizes. Sheets, bed frames, and other accessories will also be pricier. That said, you can find some value options on our best cheap mattress page, as well as our lists of the best mattresses under $1,000.
Those with a small bedroom: A king mattress could be too large for a smaller bedroom. For smaller beds, see our top picks for the best queen mattresses.
Those wanting a lighter mattress: King mattresses are heavier than other sizes, so it may be harder to move around or set up.

What to Consider in the Best King-Size Mattress

While you can’t go wrong with any of the king mattresses on this list, I’ve included a few tips and things that I look out for that could help you choose the best type of mattress for your body type and sleep needs. You can check out my mattress buying guide for more in-depth information.

Price

Keep in mind that purchasing a budget option may not give you the mattress quality or lifespan you’re hoping for. Similarly, paying thousands of dollars for a luxurious mattress may not offer anything different than a mattress hundreds of dollars less. King-size mattresses can range from $1,200 to $3,000, so I recommend planning out your budget, doing your research, and watching out for deals, because mattresses can cost various amounts and you don’t want to be caught off guard. Sleepopolis offers coupons for many of your favorite mattress brands. If you’re looking for a high-quality, durable king size mattress I recommend looking in the $1,600–$2,200 price range.

You can also check out several of my mattress roundups that are designed for value shoppers. Many of the beds featured in these articles tend to run a little cheaper (even the king-size ones).

When are the Best Mattress Sales?

One of the best times to buy a king-size mattress (or any new mattress) is around certain holidays. President’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Cyber 5 (the five-day period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday) all see mattress brands offering significant discounts and promotions.

Firmness and Feel

A bed’s feel is one of the most important buying considerations. Beds can range from firm to soft, but depending on your sleeping position and body type you’ll have different firmness needs.

Firmness can also affect how supportive and contouring a bed is, so if you’re looking for something more hugging and contouring, softer is going to be better. However, a firmer mattress could be right for you if you’re looking for extra support.

We place each mattress on our firmness scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest mattress and 10 being the firmest. Keep in mind that we consider a 6.5 a true medium-firm mattress. Read the below section to learn which is best for you, and see my mattress firmness guide for more in-depth information.

Sleeping Position

Sleepopolis prioritize testing each mattress in every sleeping position
Our Sleepopolis team testing mattresses in every sleeping position.

How you sleep affects the firmness, pressure relief, and specific support you’ll need in a mattress. It will also likely affect how you feel comfortable on a certain bed. I test every mattress I review by lying on it in each sleeping position and seeing how supportive, pressure-relieving, and comfortable the bed feels. Below, you can see what firmness levels I recommend for each sleeper, as well as an example of how I test each bed.

Sleeping PositionIdeal Mattress FirmnessFirmness Scale LevelWhy This Firmness?
Back sleepersMedium firm to firm6.5–7/10These sleepers do best on medium-firm to firm mattresses. They need enough support to keep their hips neutrally aligned with their shoulders, but also benefit from body contouring around the lower back.
Side sleepersSoft to medium soft5–6/10Side sleepers often prefer a soft mattress with plenty of pressure relief at pain points like the shoulders and hips. Because of this, side sleepers should check out pillow top and memory foam mattresses.
Stomach sleepersFirm to ultra firm7–8/10These sleepers need a firm to extra-firm mattress that prevents their hips from sinking into the bed. Bowing at the back can lead to pain over time, so stomach sleepers should find firm support from innerspring and latex mattresses.
Combination sleepers (those who change positions at night)Medium firm6.5/10Combination sleepers do best on medium-firm mattresses offering appropriate support in multiple sleeping positions. These sleepers should consider a responsive mattress to easily change positions throughout the night.

Pressure Relief

Pressure Map Avocado Green 1024x969 1
The results of our pressure map test.

Pressure relief refers to the amount of pressure alleviated on various parts of the body when lying on a mattress. This can be important for pain management and prevention. I test for pressure relief by rolling a specialized mat across a bed and lying on it in various positions. The mat then gives us a digital reading of pressure relief which shows us where pressure is being relieved and where pressure is building up. As you can see on this graphic (we call it a “pressure map”), green and blue indicate good pressure relief, and red and orange show poor pressure relief.

Body Type

Your body type can be crucial in determining what type of king-size mattress you need. If you’re a lightweight sleeper (someone who weighs less than 130 pounds), you’re not as likely as other sleepers to sink through the mattress, which means a firmer bed might feel too firm to you. If you’re an average weight sleeper weighing 130 to 250 pounds, you have it a bit easier. Most mattresses on the market are designed for your weight category, so it’s easier to rely on typical firmness ratings and reviews.

If you’re a heavy sleeper weighing over 250 pounds, I recommend choosing an innerspring or hybrid mattress with strong coils to make sure you have the proper amount of support. You can also check out my roundup of the best mattresses for heavier people.

Motion Isolation

An example of the Sleepopolis Red Wine Test
A look at our red wine test.
Motion transfer results for the Purple Restore Plus.
A look at the results from our seismograph machine.

A bed that isolates motion well is fit to be on my roundup for the best mattresses for couples. With good motion isolation, partners won’t feel each other’s movements while tossing and turning at night.

When testing for motion isolation, I use a red wine test and ball drop test. In the ball drop test, I drop a steel ball onto the mattress’s surface from various heights, then use a seismograph machine to read the vibrations. The red wine test involves placing a glass of red wine on the bed and seeing how much movement is required to slosh around the liquid.

Temperature Regulation

In the Sleepopolis lab, I also like to formally test a mattress’s cooling ability by using a thermal gun. This device measures a bed’s temperature when no one is lying on it, then how much it heats up after our mattress tester lies on it for five minutes. If it heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling. I came up with my final cooling score based on these results, the mattress’s construction, and how I feel temperature-wise when lying on it. Take a look at the results below for the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress.

Bear Elite rotated
Bear Elite Body rotated

Edge Support

If you’re purchasing a king-size mattress, chances are that you (and possibly a partner) want a lot of room to spread out. A bed with strong edge support makes this easier, allowing you utilize the entire sleeping surface, rather than just the middle. Edge support is also an indicator of durability. You can check out some beds with exceptional edge support in my list of the best mattresses that won’t sag.

The way I test a mattress’s edge support is fairly simple. I just sit on the end of the bed and see how much the mattress’s layers collapse under my weight. If they remain sturdy and I still feel propped up, then the mattress has strong edge support. If the layers crumple up and I feel myself sinking, then the mattress has weak edge support, and you probably can’t sleep too close to the edge of the bed.

King-Size Mattress Materials

Sleepopolis testing of mattress materials
Taking a closer look at the different mattress materials found in our beds.
Memory Foam

Foam mattresses can incorporate a variety of foam materials, including memory foam and poly foam. They include a support layer of dense foam, rather than a layer of coils found in hybrid mattresses. Foam beds can vary in feel, so most sleepers can find a foam mattress that works for them. In general, we’d steer heavier sleepers or those wanting a firmer feel toward hybrid or innerspring beds over foam.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine foam comfort layers and coil support layers. These mattresses often feel bouncy and responsive. Many different sleepers should find a suitable hybrid mattress, as these beds differ in feel.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are made with latex foams. They’re bouncy, naturally cooling, and very durable. Latex is often used in organic mattresses, like the Avocado Green mattress.

Innerspring Mattresses

This traditional mattress type, often found in brick-and-mortar stores, relies on a steel coil support system. Innerspring beds feel bouncy and supportive and are great for heavy people, combination sleepers, and seniors.

Hear from the Experts:

What are the Features of a Hybrid Mattress?

“A hybrid mattress features pocketed coils for targeted support and reduced motion isolation, foam or latex layers for contouring and pressure relief, zoned support, durability, versatility, and options for different firmness levels. They generally provide a responsive feel and cater to various sleep positions, making them a comfortable and supportive choice for many sleepers.”

Warranty, Shipping, and Sleep Trial

Warranty and Sleep Trial

Warranty and trial-period length weigh into a buying decision. Opt for a mattress with at least a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial. Some companies include lifetime warranties and year-long sleep trials, so take a look at company policies before deciding on a new bed. To make sure you’ve got the best deal possible, see our picks for the best mattresses for the money.

Delivery and Setup

How your bed will be delivered and how it’s set up can affect the cost of the mattress and the convenience of the sale. Many online mattress brands provide free shipping and often ship their products compressed in a box. Other brands, like Saatva, may offer free white glove delivery, transporting the mattress to your room of choice and setting it up. These considerations are important depending on what you’re looking for. If you live alone, are pregnant, or otherwise unable to move a king mattress by yourself, it can be very helpful to have the company help you set up the mattress.

Customer Service

We like to look into customer service in all of the mattresses we test, and to do this, we consider the reviews of actual people who have purchased these mattresses and see what they say. We include these customer reviews in each of our mattress reviews so you can get a sense of the customer service of each brand. We also include information on company policy in each review so you know what to expect from each brand.

What Are Different Types of King Mattresses?

Believe it or not, king-size options span far past a standard king mattress. Considering the size of your room and the space where the mattress will go can help you find the best mattress size for you. Other Mattress Sizes to Consider

Best King-Size Mattress Frequently Asked Questions

How big is a king-size mattress?

King mattresses are rectangular and measure 76 inches by 80 inches. This means they’re larger than a queen and shorter yet wider than a California king.

Are king mattresses better for couples?

It depends on your preferences. King mattresses are larger, so heavier couples or couples who like to spread out may prefer the additional space.

What is the best king mattress?

This truly does depend on the person, but if we had to choose one, we’d say the Helix Midnight Luxe. It suits sleepers of many sleeping positions and body types, and it has many features that make it a good mattress for couples (motion isolation, cooling, edge support).

Is there a bed size bigger than a king?

Yes, there are a few larger bed sizes. Alaskan King mattresses and Texan king mattresses are eight inches to 32 inches wider than a standard, or Eastern, king mattress. And Emperor size mattresses are 80 inches by 80 inches, making them the mattresses with the largest surface area on the market today.

How much does a king mattress cost?

The average king-size bed costs roughly $1,500–$1,700. Of course, there are budget and luxury options out there. But paying too far little might result in a mattress with poor-quality materials, and paying too much may not get you your money’s worth. We believe all options in this roundup to be great king-size mattresses for the money.

How much does a king mattress weigh?

A king-size mattress weighs roughly 150 pounds. Luckily, there are some companies that will help not only deliver, but also set up your mattress. Saatva is a great example of this; the company offers free white glove delivery.

Do all king mattresses have a ridge in the middle?

A ridge, or hump, commonly develops in the middle of king mattresses because it’s uncommon for solo sleepers or couples to sleep in the center of these large beds. To avoid a “king’s ridge,” you can make it a point to spend time in the center of your mattress while awake, add a topper, or choose a solid foundation or box spring with a center support beam.

How We Chose These Mattresses

Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches has reviewed more than 300 products in our mattress lab, running each one through tests such as pressure-mapping and measuring motion transfer with a seismometer. From there, we give every bed an overall score based on materials, comfort, support, cooling, and edge support. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.

Since mattress size isn’t one of our categories, we looked at how much each of these beds costs for a king, then weighed that against its overall score. In an effort to recommend the highest-quality mattresses, we chose products with a score of 4 out of 5 or higher. Click here to learn more about our methodology.
