Is the Helix Adjustable Pillow a Good Pillow for You?Â
Every sleeper is different, with varying primary sleeping positions, body types, and preferences, so let’s go over who the Helix Adjustable pillow might be a good option for, as well as who might want to skip this pillow and try a different one instead.
Who should try the Helix Adjustable pillow
- Back sleepers should appreciate the balanced, medium feel of the Helix Adjustable pillow with the support insert.
- Stomach sleepers can also sleep comfortably on the Helix Adjustable pillow, without the support insert. Its soft, compressive feel should allow these sleepers to rest without neck pain.
- Shoppers who value easy cleaning should appreciate this pillow’s washable cover.
Who should not try the Helix Adjustable pillow
- Side sleepers will likely find the Helix Adjustable pillow too soft and lacking in support. Take a look at our best pillows for side sleepers to find a better option.
- Combination sleepers might be frustrated by the adjustability mechanisms on this pillow, as you can’t really achieve a middle-ground feel to comfortably switch between two positions.
- Shoppers looking for an adjustable pillow that allows them to remove fill, instead of a support insert, might prefer a different pillow.
What Does the Helix Adjustable Pillow Feel Like?Â
Now let’s talk about what the Helix Adjustable pillow feels like. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, so you might have a different experience than I did.
Helix Adjustable Pillow Firmness
At Sleepopolis, we rate pillows’ firmness as either soft, medium, or firm. Each firmness level is best suited for a different sleeping position. Soft is best for stomach sleepers, medium is best for back sleepers, and firm is best for side sleepers. This is because you require different levels of neck support in each sleeping position — side sleepers need a lot of support since their head and neck are lifted so far off the mattress, whereas stomach sleepers’ necks are basically right up against the mattress.
I thought the Helix Adjustable pillow had an overall medium feel. The down-alternative fill used in the inserts isn’t super firm or dense, like memory foam. But still, I didn’t feel my head and neck sink right through the pillow — I felt a mid-level of support with the support insert in the pillow. When I removed it, the pillow did feel much softer.
Helix Adjustable Pillow Loft
We also categorize pillows by loft, or height, as either low, medium, or high loft. Different lofts work better for different sleeping positions, much like different firmnesses work for different sleeping positions. For stomach sleepers, a low loft is best. For back sleepers, a medium loft. And for side sleepers, a high loft.
With the support insert, the Helix Adjustable pillow has a medium loft. If you remove the support insert, it is more of a low loft.
Now let’s go over how this pillow felt in different sleeping positions.
Side — I found the Helix Adjustable pillow a bit too soft for comfortable side sleeping. My neck didn’t feel properly supported, so it was sinking down into the pillow. I would recommend something a little firmer, that offers more neck support — see our best pillows for side sleepers for more options.
Back — With the support insert, I found the Helix Adjustable quite comfortable for back sleeping. The medium loft and medium firmness worked effectively to provide enough neck support, without causing my neck to crane upwards.
Stomach — With the support insert removed, I found the Helix Adjustable to work well for stomach sleeping. The soft and compressive feel of the pillow, along with the low loft, were effective at preventing my neck from being pushed upwards and out of alignment.
Under the Arm — The Helix Adjustable pillow makes a fairly comfortable pillow to sleep with under the arm. Its soft, fluffy feel makes it cozy to hug, although it doesn’t offer a ton of support as you lie on your side.
Between the Legs — This pillow also works well to sleep with between the legs, although I think it works better without the support insert. It offers some pressure relief around the legs without being too large.
The Helix Adjustable Pillow is made with a removable support insert layer so you can adjust the height of the pillow and find your most comfortable loft.

What Is the Helix Adjustable Pillow Made Of?Â
The Helix Adjustable pillow consists of an inner pillow and an outer pillow. The inner pillow is the removable support insert, while the outer pillow is the cover and two pouches of fill, which are sewn into the cover.
It’s available in two sizes: standard and king size.
Cover: The outer cover of the pillow — what Helix calls the comfort shell — is made from 100 percent cotton. Sewn into the cover of the pillow are two pouches of fill, on either side of the cover, which surround the support insert.
Support Insert Shell: The cover, or shell, of the support insert is 100 percent polyester.
Fill: The fill in both the outer pillows’ pouches and the support insert layer are 100 percent gel microfiber.Â
Is the Helix Adjustable Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?
I think the Helix Adjustable pillow is a decent option for hot sleepers. It didn’t feel noticeably cool to the touch as I was testing it, but I also didn’t feel too overheated. I appreciate the use of a breathable cotton cover, which will allow for lots of airflow and prevent hot air from being trapped. Additionally, the gel microfiber should help to draw some heat away from the body. I wouldn’t say it’s the most cooling pillow, but definitely a solid option to prevent overheating.

My Final Thoughts About the Helix Adjustable Pillow
The Helix Adjustable is a comfortable pillow for back and stomach sleepers, especially those who like a softer down-alternative style pillow. I thought Helix’s approach to adjustable pillows was interesting, as most adjustable pillows allow you to remove fill (like shredded foam, microfiber, etc.) to lower the loft, but instead Helix opted for a removable insert.
The removable insert makes it simpler to lower the loft, but it doesn’t allow for quite as much customization. Also, you can’t really strike a middle ground between the medium loft with the insert and the low loft without the insert, so I’m not sure this makes the best option for combination sleepers, as you have to choose between the medium loft (good for back sleeping) and the low loft (good for stomach sleeping).
This pillow should sleep fairly cool, thanks to its breathable cotton cover and gel fiber. I also appreciate the cover being machine washable. While I would still recommend using a pillowcase, it’s helpful to be able to wash the cover and keep the pillow clean.

Still not sure if this is the right pillow for you? Let’s compare it to some other adjustable pillows.
Helix Adjustable Pillow vs Saatva Latex Pillow
- The Saatva Latex pillow has a similar construction to the Helix Adjustable, with an inner pillow and an outer pillow. The Saatva Latex’s outer pillow has an organic cotton cover and is filled with microdenier fiber, a down alternative that is soft and fluffy.
- The inner pillow is filled with shredded latex, offering a firm support center in this pillow. You can sleep on this pillow either with the insert, or without it.
- The Saatva Latex pillow offers the luxurious, cloudlike feel of a hotel pillow or down pillow, but with more sturdy support for spinal alignment for back and side sleepers, thanks to the latex core.
