Next, let’s get into detail about how these beds feel! Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and depends on your body type and preferred sleeping position. When I evaluate a mattress, I have a few coworkers test it with me as well. The feels I describe below are an aggregate of our experiences on these beds.
Layla
I’ll start out by talking about the soft side of the flippable Layla mattress. This side of the Layla definitely felt soft. I gave it a 5.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is a 6.5 out of 10, so the Layla is definitely a truly soft bed. I felt a lot of sinkage in every sleeping position on this mattress, which is a great sign for folks who like a traditional memory foam feel.
The firm side of the Layla got a 7.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. Which means it felt like a truly firm mattress. I felt a bit more “on top of” this side of the mattress (which features a thinner layer of memory foam), but still felt a bit of body-contouring.
Casper
The Casper got a 7 out of 10 rating on the mattress firmness scale. This means it’s just a bit firmer than medium-firm. This mattress felt a bit more balanced than the Layla. I didn’t sink into it as far, and found it easier to roll around and change positions. This responsiveness might be a nice feature for combination sleepers.
I also appreciated the feel of the Casper’s high-quality zoned support layer. This layer is split into different firmness levels to feel softer around the shoulders and firmer around the lower back and hips. This is a great feature for anyone who needs some extra lumbar support, but doesn’t want to sacrifice pressure relief in the shoulder area. It’s also a nice perk for anyone who struggles with lower back pain, because it promotes a healthy spinal alignment.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Layla and the Casper
Next, I’ll go into detail about what these beds feel like in each of the main sleeping positions.
Layla
Back — Both sides of the Layla should feel comfortable to back sleepers. If you like plenty of sinkage, go with the soft side. If you prefer a bit more support, the firmer side should work well for your needs.
Side — I’d recommend the soft side of the Layla to strict side sleepers. This side of the Layla offers great sinkage and body-contouring, which most side sleepers appreciate. This side of the bed should relieve pressure around sensitive joints for side sleepers.
Stomach — I don’t think either side of the Layla is suitable for stomach sleepers. These folks need to avoid sinkage and keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Too much body-contouring creates a bend in their backs that can lead to pain over time. I’d recommend strict stomach sleepers look at one of our best innerspring mattresses to find a better fit for their needs.
Body Weight — The Layla will likely feel firmer to lighter people, who won’t sink through its memory foam layers as quickly. These folks will most likely want to stick to the softer side of this mattress. On the other hand, heavy people (over 250 lbs) probably won’t get the support they need from the Layla. I’d recommend they opt for one of our best mattresses for heavy people instead.
Casper
Back — Back sleepers should feel really comfortable on the Casper! It offers just the right blend of pressure relief and support for these folks, and is one of my favorite mattresses for back sleeping.
Side — Strict side sleepers might find the Casper a bit too firm. But, since it’s softer around the shoulder area, combination sleepers who only spend part of the night on their sides might be comfortable on this bed.
Stomach — Combination sleepers who spend only part of the night on their stomachs could like the Casper. But strict stomach sleepers will need something firmer to prevent their hips from sinking into the bed. I’d recommend one of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
Body Weight — Like the Layla, the Casper may feel firmer to lighter sleepers and softer to heavier sleepers. Personally, I don’t think the Casper offers enough support for heavier sleepers either. These folks often do best on a hybrid mattress that uses innerspring support to provide some additional durability. Layla
Note: I’ll be describing the Layla with the soft side facing up.
Cover — The Layla’s mattress cover is made of a breathable thermo-gel fabric to help encourage airflow.
Soft Comfort Layer — Right below the cover is a 3-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam. This layer is soft and contours around the body for a pressure-relieving feel. The copper infusion helps to prevent the bed from trapping body heat like a traditional memory foam mattress would.
Transition Layer — A layer of Layla’s Max Airflow support foam helps ease the sleeper down onto the firmer support layer below.
Support Layer — A firm high-density poly foam support core provides structure and lift to the rest of the bed.
Firm Comfort Layer — With the soft side up, the bottom layer of the Layla is 1-inch of copper-infused memory foam. Sleepers won’t feel this layer in this configuration, but when the mattress is flipped, it provides pressure relief while retaining more firmness than the soft comfort layer.
Casper
Cover — The cover on the Casper is a breathable polyester blend that is easily removable by zipper.
Comfort Layer — Under the cover is a top layer of Airscape foam. This open-cell foam was designed to feel like latex, which is naturally cooling and has a faster response to pressure than memory foam. This is why you’ll feel more “on top of” the Casper than the Layla.
Transition Layer — Next up is a memory foam layer that’s separated into three different support zones. Each zone has a different firmness level, creating a zoned support system that’s ideal for sleepers in need of a little extra lumbar support.
Base Layer — Like the Layla, the Casper uses a common type of heavy duty poly foam to shape the mattress and provide foundational support.
