What is the Helix Weighted Blanket Made Of?
Materials are an important place to start when evaluating a weighted blanket. You’ve got to know what you’re looking at before you can understand how it works! So let’s talk about what the Helix weighted blanket is made of.
Outer cover: The cover of the Helix weighted blanket is made from two different materials. On one side, the cover is made of sheared microfiber and on the other, it is made from fleece. This cover has a zipper that allows you to access the inner blanket. From the inside, the cover is attached to the inner blanket with ties. This cover is removable and machine washable.
Inner blanket: The inner blanket of the Helix is made from 100 percent cotton. This is what holds the fill that gives the blanket its weight. This inner blanket utilizes gridded stitching to evenly distribute the fill across the whole blanket.
Fill: The weighted fill in the Helix weighted blanket is fine-grade glass beads. Some beads are contained in each square of the stitched grid, like a pocket, to maintain even distribution.
How Much Does the Helix Weighted Blanket Weigh?
The Helix weighted blanket is available in three different weights: 10, 15, and 20 pounds. All three weight options are 48 inches by 72 inches in size. I tested the 15 pound blanket for this review.
When you’re choosing a weighted blanket, it’s important to choose one that is close to 10 percent of your own body weight. The reason is that this weight ratio will allow you to experience Deep Pressure Touch, sometimes also called Deep Pressure Stimulation. Deep Pressure Touch is the sensation we get from things like hugging that promotes production of serotonin and melatonin, which are hormones that help you to feel happier and calmer. Deep Pressure Touch also reduces production of stress hormones like cortisol.
There’s a lot of scientific evidence backing up Deep Pressure Touch and for many years, weighted blankets have been used to induce Deep Pressure Touch. Many people with anxiety, autism, or ADHD have found weighted blankets to be helpful in calming and relieving anxiety. They’re also great for just helping you get more restful sleep!
What Does the Helix Weighted Blanket Feel Like?
Now let’s talk about what this blanket feels like. First and foremost, I absolutely loved the feel of the outer cover. I must admit, I love all things soft and fuzzy (you should see my fuzzy sock collection!), so this microfiber and fleece cover immediately appealed to me.
I liked the feel of both sides, but the super soft fleece side won me over. It has a wonderfully cozy, sherpa-like feel that just made me want to curl up in front of a fireplace. The microfiber side has a nice velvety feel to it, so you can’t really go wrong with either side!
I also thought the Helix weighted blanket had very even weight distribution. The gridded stitching used in the inner blanket does a great job of keeping the glass beads spread evenly across the whole blanket.
Is the Helix Weighted Blanket Good for Hot Sleepers?
A common concern around weighted blankets is overheating. To be honest, I found the Helix weighted blanket to be much more warming than cooling. This didn’t surprise me, since the cover of the blanket is so thick and fuzzy.
Now if you’re someone like me, who can frequently be found shivering when someone in the same room as me is sweating, you’ll love how warm and cozy this blanket is. But, if you’re someone who runs hot and wants a weighted blanket that can counteract that heat, the Helix probably isn’t the best option for you.
If you’re interested in a more cooling weighted blanket, I’d recommend you check out the Bearaby Tree Napper, which is made from Tencel, or the Bearaby Cotton Napper, which is made from organic cotton. Both of these blankets have an open-weave that allows for lots of breathability. Another great option for hot sleepers is the Nectar Serenity weighted blanket, which has a duvet cover with a warming side and a cooling side.
How Durable is the Helix Weighted Blanket?
When shopping for sleep products, you want to be sure you’re getting a durable product that will last you for years to come. I think the Helix weighted blanket is a pretty high-quality product that will maintain its quality over time, if it’s properly cared for. With a removable cover that is machine washable, it’ll be really easy to keep your Helix blanket clean. And I thought the quality of the materials used in this blanket’s construction was very good, from the fabrics to the zipper.

We’ve gone over a lot of information around the Helix weighted blanket, so let’s talk about who I recommend it for and who should try something else.
Who Should Try the Helix Weighted Blanket
- If you’re a lover of all things fuzzy like I am, you will certainly love the feel of the Helix weighted blanket’s cover.
- If you’re someone who’s looking for a blanket to keep them warm, you’ll also love the Helix. I was super warm and cozy under this heavy blanket.
- Also, if you want a weighted blanket that’s easy to keep clean, you’ll appreciate the Helix’s machine washable cover.
Helix Weighted Blanket Complaints
- Now if you’re someone who runs hot and wants a cooling weighted blanket, the Helix is not for you. You’ll be quite toasty under this blanket.
- If you’re on the heavier side, you also may not want to purchase this blanket. If you weigh significantly more than 200 pounds, there isn’t a blanket weight option that’ll allow you to experience Deep Pressure Touch.
- Also a very small complaint, but I could hear the glass beads rattling around whenever I moved the blanket. So if you think that type of noise might bother you, I’d recommend a different weighted blanket.
