I am a certified sleep science coach and a mattress expert. However, I have a confession: My husband and I were once headed for a sleep divorce. I’m a light sleeper, and my husband’s snoring and restlessness can make it feel like trying to enter dreamland via a mosh pit.
Still, I’m pretty fond of my husband, and knowing researchers have found that sharing a bed with a spouse or partner provides better sleep than sleeping alone, I was determined to save our “sleep marriage.” Therefore, I dove into finding the best mattress for couples with great enthusiasm.
When selecting the best mattresses for couples, I followed the same basic guidelines I use for solo sleepers. I started by looking at the scores and testing notes of the more than 330 mattresses that my fellow sleep experts and I tested and reviewed. We paid special attention to the features that improve sleeping with a partner, devising a list of the best beds that’ll have you sleeping soundly beside them.

What We Looked for in the Best Mattresses for Couples
Medium-firm mattresses that come in at 6.5 out of 10 on our scale are often the best for providing a mix of softness and support for a number of sleeper types. Studies also show that they’re the best to align the spine and prevent aches and pains from building along the body.
To ensure mattresses are versatile enough to accommodate partners with different sleeping styles, we aimed to include mattresses that fall at or around this firmness level.
Couples need a mattress that can support the weight of two adults located in generally the same place. Selecting a mattress with robust edge support ensures you can spread out without slipping off. It also means better durability, as it’s a sign the bed is less likely to sag.
To test edge support, we rest on the bed’s perimeter on our back, side, and stomach – and also sit down directly on it. How far it dips below our weight determines how sturdy the bed’s edge support is. While some beds fall behind in edge support (those that are softer or made entirely of foam), we tried to include multiple options with rock-solid perimeters in this best-of list.
Those who sleep with a partner may feel their movements if they don’t have a bed that isolates motion well. Thick comfort layers are best at absorbing motion before it travels across the surface and disturbs sleepers on the other side.
We test every bed’s motion isolation with our couples’ test, which involves two testers. While a tester rests on one side of the mattress, another moves around on the other side. From here, we can tell how much movement is felt and whether it would disturb or wake a light sleeper. For the best beds for couples, we wanted to include beds that scored high in this category when possible.
We’ve developed a rigorous testing methodology that tells us how each mattress performs and who it might be a good fit for. All the beds on this list have been evaluated for pressure relief, cooling performance, responsiveness, edge support, and more.

Dr. Joe Tedesco found the Nectar Premier’s softer feel worked best for side sleeping. “I don’t get quite as much of a sinking or melting feeling as I did on my back; it’s just soft,” he explained. “It’s supportive, and there’s no pressure buildup. If anything, there’s pressure relief on my shoulder. My knees and ankles and butt sink a little, but they’re sinking in the same amount. I’m getting good contouring that follows the natural spinal curve.”

Our Expert Opinion
To land the top spot, a bed must perform exceptionally well in the most essential categories for couples. It also has to pack in a few extras to help it soar to the top. When all our testing was complete, the versatile Nectar Premier beat some stiff competition, buoyed by scores of 4 or higher in cooling, motion isolation, and responsiveness.
The Premier is the direct upgrade to the standard Nectar, and it’s the model many couples will want to choose for its superior cooling. Unfortunately, this softer-than-expected mattress doesn’t offer the best edge support, nor is it the best option for stomach sleepers.
Choose the Nectar Premier if …
- You deal with pain while sleeping. The Nectar Premier should contour to your hips, shoulders, and lower back. It will cradle these areas and protect them from pressure buildup, which can worsen pain.
- You move around a lot in your sleep. For a softer foam mattress, the Premier is decently responsive. Combination sleepers and sexually active couples should appreciate the ease of movement.
Keep looking if …
- You or your partner frequently sit on the edge of your mattress. While we were able to lie down along the perimeter without sliding off, this wasn’t the case for sitting at the edge. The bed’s softer layers compress significantly, which may leave some folks feeling unstable.
- You’re a dedicated stomach sleeper. These folks will want a firmer mattress, like the Saatva Classic, that supports the hips. Otherwise, they might deal with misalignment and lower back pain.

Helix Dusk Luxe – Best Mattress for Back-Sleeping Couples
The Helix Dusk Luxe mattress has a medium-firm feel that is perfect for back sleepers. Also, this mattress offers great contouring that doesn’t make you feel like you’re “stuck in” bed, which is great news for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review of all the Helix Luxe mattresses.

After trying out the Helix Dusk Luxe, Dr. Joe Tedesco believed the bed’s balanced feel would be a good fit for back sleepers. “I don’t feel like I’m sitting on top of the bed, but I still feel very supported,” he explained. “Everything is falling into the right position. There’s not an overt feeling of the bed pushing back against my body.” He also recommended the Dusk Luxe for “weight lifters that don’t want a memory foam mattress but still want to relax into their bed.”

When selecting the best mattress for back sleepers, I make sure the bed supports them and keeps their spines neutral, and I also check for pressure-relieving contouring. The Helix Dusk Luxe was the best mattress for back-sleeping couples, earning a 4 out of 5 or higher in every category we tested — including pressure relief for back sleepers.
While I highly recommend this bed for back and stomach sleepers, side sleepers will probably want to look elsewhere. It’s also on the expensive side, though its stellar performance shows it’s more than worth every penny you spend.
Choose the Helix Dusk Luxe if …
- You run hot. Our testers thought this bed felt cool to the touch. It didn’t heat up very much during our temperature test, either, so hot sleepers should be set.
- You want a bouncy mattress. The Helix Dusk Luxe snaps back into place when you bear down on it, so it never “holds onto” you as you move around on its surface. This should benefit combination sleepers and couples wanting a good bed for sex.
Keep looking if …
- You’re looking for an affordable option. The Helix Dusk Luxe certainly lives up to the “Luxe” portion of its name, but some couples may not be prepared to pay nearly $2,000 for a queen-size mattress.

Leesa Sapira Chill – Best Cooling Mattress for Couples
The Leesa Sapira Chill is a hybrid mattress, available in three firmness levels. We tested the Medium-Firm model and felt it was just softer than average, but could still work for all three sleeping positions — a rare find among mattresses. Since I share a bed with another person, which increases the amount of body heat produced, a mattress with fantastic cooling capabilities is non-negotiable. The Leesa Sapira Chill checks all the boxes by keeping you as cool as walking into an air-conditioned store on a July day.
That’s not all — this mattress features above-average pressure relief and responsiveness, especially for a bed that feels so soft and cushy on top. Couples who sleep on their side and back sleepers will appreciate this bed’s contouring feel. But stomach sleepers and those over 230 pounds may want something firmer to better support them.
Choose the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid if …
- You sleep on your side. The Sapira Chill Hybrid is a fantastic choice for side sleepers, due to its soft, pressure-relieving upper layers. This is the position that earned the most praise from our testers.
- You’re a combination sleeper. Regardless of which position you take, switching between them will feel seamless on the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid. Despite its plush top, our testers never felt “stuck” in this mattress.
Keep looking if …
- You and your partner are especially light sleepers. While most should rest side-by-side undisturbed, we’d consider the motion absorption on this bed just average. If you don’t want to feel a thing your partner is doing, check out the Nolah Evolution, which earned a 5 out of 5 for motion isolation.
- You’re a stomach sleeper over 130 pounds. Aside from lightweight sleepers, those who rest on their stomach will find this bed too soft to support their hips in this position.

The WinkBed Plus is a firm, hybrid mattress designed specifically to accommodate heavyweight sleepers. Through our testing, we found it works best for back sleepers, particularly those over 250 pounds. Our heavyweight tester, Caine Wilkes, gave the WinkBed Plus 5 out of 5 stars for both side and back sleeping. “My hips feel aligned with my spine on my side, ” he said. But he really enjoyed the mattress for back sleeping: “I’m lying on a cloud right now. Everything feels really nice — I feel cushioned and supported all throughout. Everything is aligned.”

Our Expert Opinion
Although the WinkBed Plus was designed with heavier sleepers in mind, this mattress has a true medium-firm feel (6.5 out of 10 on our scale), which should accommodate couples with different preferences. Our pressure relief testers of all sizes gave this bed praise for its pressure relief and comfort, helping it to earn a 4.2 out of 5 in this category.
Its hybrid construction effectively balances both responsiveness and motion absorption, so couples can move around easily without disturbing one another. The main downside of this bed is its higher price. The WinkBed is already a more expensive option, but the Plus version will tack on a couple hundred bucks — though I’d say it’s worth it.
Choose the WinkBed Plus if …
- You and your partner are prone to overheating. Our temperature test showed that the WinkBed Plus’s surface temperature barely rose by more than 4 degrees. While it didn’t feel particularly cool to the touch, it should remain comfortably neutral throughout the night.
- You’re a combination sleeper. Even with its dense pillow top, our testers thought the WinkBed Plus had a springy feel. This means you can move around on the surface and switch positions with little effort.
Keep looking if …
- You’re on a budget. Since this is a luxury bed, it may not be financially prudent for some people to buy it right now. If you want an affordable bed, check out our top pick, the Nectar Premier.
- You like a traditional memory foam feel. Sleepers who like a bed that “hugs” them may not enjoy the WinkBed Plus. You’ll feel pleasantly buoyed on top of this mattress, but that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Nolah Evolution – Best Mattress for Side-Sleeping Couples
The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. Dr. Joe Tedesco thought that sleepers would experience a lot of “weightlessness” with the Nolah Evolution, particularly those who sleep on their back and side. “I think people who have back pain could stand to benefit from this mattress,” he said. “You get a slight posterior tilt as a back sleeper with this mattress, which is ideal for alleviating hip and back pain.”

Our Expert Opinion
Side sleepers need a soft, pressure-relieving surface to sink into, and couples need one that can absorb motion while keeping them comfortable. The Nolah Evolution does both, and extremely well, at that. This is one of the rare mattresses that earned high praise for both side- and back-sleeping pressure relief, and a 5-out-of-5 score for motion isolation.
There aren’t many downsides to this bed because of its well-rounded performance, but some sleepers may be put off by its higher price. The boxes for my Nolah Evolution and the one sent to our studio arrived in less-than-stellar shape, which isn’t the best look for a company that uses bed-in-a-box delivery.
Choose the Nolah Evolution if …
- You wake up from the smallest twitch. If you’re an especially light sleeper, you’ll be made in the shade with the Evolution. I have this mattress myself, and it effectively stifles all my husband’s flopping and flailing.
- You also sleep on your back. Our pressure relief testers also gave the Nolah Evolution a 4.3 out of 5 for this position, the same rating they gave side sleeping. You’ll feel a good mix of alignment and cushioning in either position.

- You’re looking for a mattress under $1,000. The Nolah Evolution isn’t a cheap bed by any means, but it’s worth the investment. Still, couples looking to save on a new mattress may want to look elsewhere.

We consider heavy sleepers to be those who weigh over 230 pounds. Since this group needs more support and typically sleeps best on a firm mattress, we pay close attention to beds that prevent them from sinking too far into the layers. Brooklyn Bedding designed the Titan Plus Core hybrid specifically for heavier sleepers, using high-density foam and up to 900 pocketed coils to ensure they are properly supported.

Nectar Classic
Classics are named that for a reason, and Nectar’s flagship, all-foam model has earned its name. I considered this mattress because it received a lot of 4s, 4.5s, and 5s in scoring. However, the one area where it fell short was motion isolation. It is odd for an all-foam bed not to absorb a partner’s movements well, and because of this, I decided to pass on the Nectar Classic.
Saatva Rx
The Saatva Rx is a stellar option from the luxury manufacturer, but it comes with a hefty price tag (over $3,000 for a queen-size mattress). Therefore, despite its high scores, I decided to leave it out and include the less expensive Saatva Classic because I prefer a balanced approach, even when recommending luxury beds. That said, couples with budgets allowing this level of spending will likely be thoroughly impressed with the Rx.

When selecting the best mattresses for couples, we run the same tests, but we pay special attention to features that impact two sleepers in the same bed. These include: motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support.
Key Testing Categories for Couples
Firmness
Firmness and feel are usually the most important factors in selecting a mattress for you and your significant other. However, it can be challenging if you have different firmness preferences.
We test our mattresses using a firmness scale that ranks mattresses from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest and 1 being the softest. The industry standard for medium-firm firmness is 6.5, which we find to be a good middle ground for many couples, especially if they have different sleeping preferences.
Taking a look at the beds we’ve tested, the average firmness rating comes out to about 6.7 out of 5, barely a smidge firmer than true medium-firm. For this list, you may see beds that feel slightly softer or firmer than medium-firm, but all earned praise from our testers, who represent three body types and three sleeping positions.

Edge Support
When space is shared, every square inch counts. And that includes the edges of the mattress. But you don’t want saggy edges that make you feel unstable or, worse, slide right off. That’s why perimeter support is one of our testing categories for couples.
To test a mattress’s edge support, our testers sit on the edge of the bed and see whether the layers buckle or collapse under their weight. We also lie down on the perimeter in each sleeping position. If the mattress stays sturdy with little give, it probably has strong edge support, which allows couples to safely use the entire surface.
The average edge support rating for all the beds we’ve tested is 4 out of 5. Ideally, we want beds to fall around or above this number. Some mattresses, like those with softer upper layers or all-foam constructions, lagged behind — but this is usually due to a lower seated edge support score. These beds should allow you to lie down along the edges without incident.

Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is important if you or your partner tends to be a light sleeper. To prevent nightly disturbances, couples want a bed that excels at isolating motion, rather than transferring it. Motion transfer refers to the movement that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other side.
To evaluate motion transfer on a mattress, we have two of our testers get into bed. One tester remains “asleep” on one side while the second moves around on the other, switching positions and getting out of bed. However much the first tester feels, and whether they can tell what their partner is doing, helps them rate this category out of 5.
When you look at the hundreds of beds we’ve tested, the average motion isolation score is 4 out of 5. We aimed to include beds that scored at or above this number. Those that did not have other attractive qualities for couples, like added cooling features or extra bounce for sex.

Other Tests
The above areas are great places to start when looking for a new mattress for you and your partner, but you’ll want to consider other aspects of a bed’s performance that’ll have you both sleeping soundly.
Sexually active couples will want a mattress with superior responsiveness. This feature refers to how quickly and effectively a mattress adjusts to the movements and pressure of the sleeper. Responsive beds are better to move around on. This is also a plus for combination sleepers who switch positions throughout the night.
Cooling is another factor to think about. Sharing space means shared body heat, which for sleepers prone to night sweats could spell trouble. We use a thermal gun to measure how much heat a mattress retains, so you can get a feel for whether a bed is hot-sleeper-friendly.
