When it comes to finding a new mattress, it’s not a “one size fits all” situation. What feels great to one sleeper could be a total nightmare for someone with a different body type or preferred sleeping position. And when it comes to couples, it’s very rare that both partners have identical weights and preferences. One of the most effective ways to provide the best of both worlds for these sleepers is a split-king mattress. Essentially two twin XL mattresses pushed together, a split king allows both partners can select a bed they genuinely love.
Over the past three years, I’ve worked with a team of expert testers to assess and review mattresses based on their performance in categories most important to sleepers, such as pressure relief, cooling, edge support, and more. As a certified sleep science coach, I’ve been trained to evaluate these beds using a rigorous testing methodology that collects both qualitative and quantitative data.
Our team collaborates closely with a network of medical professionals, including physical therapists, board-certified physicians, and sleep experts. When choosing the best split king mattresses, I turned to our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, for insight into what couples really need for a mattress, which includes cooling, edge support, responsiveness, and more.
I also consulted with our chief medical product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSC, who came into our testing studio to evaluate mattresses from a physical therapist’s perspective. He helped me identify which mattresses help relieve pain in specific areas and which beds exacerbate pain.
Our top pick for split king mattresses
I chose the Saatva Classic as the best overall split king mattress because it’s offered in Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm models, allowing couples to select the option best suited to their sleep needs. Additionally, this bed earns 4 stars or higher in edge support, cooling, and responsiveness, and receives a glowing review from our chief medical product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco.

What I Looked for in the Best Split King Mattress
Our team of certified sleep science coaches and expert testers rigorously evaluates every mattress using our testing methodology to assess its performance in categories most important to sleepers. We collect both qualitative and quantitative data, which we analyze to determine who a mattress is best for.
Split king mattresses are typically purchased by couples who have different firmness preferences or sleep needs. These beds are also often placed on an adjustable base that allows independent head elevation on both sides. With that in mind, I picked mattresses that scored highly in categories most relevant to couples. Each bed earned a 4 out of 5 or higher in at least three of the below testing areas.
Pressure Relief: Since different sleepers have different preferences, I chose mattresses that provided adequate pressure relief for multiple body types in different sleeping positions. We tested every mattress on this roundup using testers of different weights to gauge how these beds perform for sleepers of all shapes and sizes.
Edge Support: Since a split king is essentially two mattresses pushed together, it’s important that the edges are just as strong as the middle. This not only keeps the sleeper from falling off the side, but also prevents the “center” of the bed from sagging due to lack of support. When choosing mattresses for this roundup, I paid close attention to performance on our three edge support tests.
Responsiveness: Responsiveness is important to both combination sleepers and sexually active couples. I chose mattresses that had a quick response to pressure or a decent level of bounce, which allows couples to move around the bed without feeling trapped in the foam layers.
Cooling: Since two bodies produce more heat than just one, I looked for mattresses that scored highly on our thermal gun test, which allows us to measure how well a bed regulates temperature. If one or both partners run hot at night, a bed with good cooling abilities can dissipate heat and wick away moisture.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. What our tester says:
“The Saatva Classic’s springy surface is perfect for combination sleepers looking for ease of movement as they toss and turn throughout the night. Also, back sleepers are perhaps best suited to the bed’s lifted support and balanced cushioning from the pillow top.” – Livvi DiCicco, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
When choosing the best overall split king mattress, I looked for a bed that knocked it out of the park in the categories most important to couples — edge support, cooling, and responsiveness. Additionally, I looked for a bed that’s offered in multiple firmness levels, so couples can customize their side of the bed. In the end, the Saatva Classic mattress rose to the top, scoring 4 stars or higher in these key categories while offering durable support that’s compatible with most sleepers
The Saatva is available in three different mattress models: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We tested the Luxury Firm model in our studio, which we rated a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it’s firmer than average. While the plush pillow top offers some initial cushioning at the joints, the two layers of support coils keep the sleeper lifted. When lying down, our testers felt more “on” the bed than “in” the bed.
Our testers found the Luxury Firm most compatible with back sleeping. Our three testers, representing different weight classes, awarded this mattress an average of 4 out of 5 stars for pressure relief, finding excellent support and cushioning in the lumbar region. Our average-weight tester Erin Chiles summed it up perfectly, saying, “It’s firm but soft. I can feel pressure relief in my lower back, and my spine feels really aligned.”
Our lightweight tester Asha lying on a pressure mat to test the Saatva’s pressure relief in the side-sleeping position.
Side sleeping was less comfortable, earning 3.7 stars for pressure relief. We recommend that side sleepers opt for the Plush Soft model for added cushioning at the hips and shoulders. Regardless of your sleeping position, our Chief Medical Product Tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, thinks this bed is gold for people with hip pain. “Your pelvis is in a great position to prevent significant pressure buildup,” he said.
The Saatva’s coil-on-coil design provides standout support across the entire bed, including the edges. Our tester, Kenny Timper, stacked weighted plates directly on the edge of the bed and used a tape measure to record how many inches the layers compressed. Even as he added more weight, the edges remained sturdy, earning a perfect 5-star rating. With a split king (two twin XLs side by side), strong edge support like this is especially important to prevent a sagging center.
Our tester Kenny Timper getting a read on the Saatva’s responsiveness.
Responsiveness and cooling are two more standout features. Two layers of coils make this bed extremely bouncy, making it easy for sexually active couples and combination sleepers to move around, so it earned 5 stars for responsiveness. These coils also promote airflow, keeping the bed cool enough to earn 4 stars on our temperature test. While not cool to the touch, the bed only warmed up by 7.8 degrees after five minutes of use.
Motion transfer is less critical for split king beds, as each partner has their own mattress. However, it’s worth noting that the Saatva scored just 2.8 stars in this category. Price may also be a concern for some shoppers, as a split king costs $2,998 at full retail. Luckily, Saatva runs frequent sales, and you can also check out our Saatva coupon page for current deals.

With soft foam and a sturdy layer of innerspring coils, the DreamCloud strikes a balance between comfort and support — a little bit of contouring up top and on-top-of-the-bed feel that comes from the bottom. It’s a fairly firm mattress that we think is most comfortable for back sleepers. It also has some luxury touches such as a cashmere-blend cover that are reminiscent of a high-end hotel. Learn more in our DreamCloud video review.
What our tester says:
“I really like how luxurious this mattress feels and how it could work for a variety of sleepers. Along with that, I found that the breathable cashmere cover helps the DreamCloud sleep cool throughout the night. Thanks to its medium-firm to firm support, I think the DreamCloud is a durable mattress. It balances support with plenty of pressure relief for back sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor
Luxury mattresses are known for their premium materials and upgraded features, which often drive up the price. If you’re looking for a luxurious bed that won’t break the bank, I recommend the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid. While the brand claims a total value of $2,195 for a split king, this model is offered for just $1,098. Although the price is low, this bed still showed off during testing, earning 4 stars or higher in all key categories. In fact, this bed is one of our top performers, earning an overall average of 4.8 out of 5 stars.
With a quilted cover, two layers of memory foam, and a layer of coils, this bed offers a great mix of pressure relief and support. We rated this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, resulting in a classic medium-firm feel that appeals to a variety of sleepers. The bed offers a lot of initial plushness, which feels soothing around the joints, but it offers firmer support to keep the spine aligned.
When we evaluated the DreamCloud for pressure relief, my colleague Sosha Lewis and I felt most comfortable in the back sleeping position. While the quilted cover cushions the hips and lower back, the coils kept us lifted and offered great lumbar support, so we rated the bed 5 stars for back sleeping. When side sleeping, we felt slightly more pressure building at the shoulders, so we gave this position 3.5 stars. While most side sleepers should feel supported, some may desire softer contouring.
Our tester Riley Otis trying out the DreamCloud in the side-sleeping position.
Combination sleepers in particular can appreciate the DreamCloud’s high performance in responsiveness. I found it super easy to move around on this bed due to the layer of springy coils, rating the bed 5 stars for responsiveness. Combination sleepers should be able to switch between sleeping positions without feeling stuck in the bed. Couples can also benefit from high responsiveness, as it promotes mobility during sex.
This bed also stands out for its impressive performance on our cooling test, earning 4.5 stars. When I used a thermal gun to measure how much the bed warmed up after 5 minutes of use, its temperature had only increased by 4.3 degrees. This indicated excellent cooling, so couples shouldn’t have to worry about overheating.

While this bed is compatible with lightweight and average-weight side and back sleepers, we don’t recommend it for heavy sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds. These sleepers will likely need firmer support to prevent too much sinkage at the hips. We also don’t recommend the DreamCloud to people seeking super deep sinkage and contouring, as they may not like the “on the bed” feel.

The Helix Dusk mattress has a medium-soft feel that is perfect for back sleepers. Also, this mattress offers great contouring that doesn’t make you feel like you’re “stuck in” bed, which is great news for combination sleepers.
What our tester says:
“We found this beds to be springy and responsive, which is great for sex and for combination sleepers who switch between sleeping positions.” – Logan Block, former content director
Hybrid mattresses are known for their balance of support and pressure relief, combining contouring foam with supportive coils. As our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, puts it, “It’s like a superhero of sleep comfort, providing the best of both worlds for a better night’s rest.” For sleepers seeking supreme support with a subtle touch of softness, I recommend the Helix Dusk. Not only did this bed offer excellent pressure relief despite its firmer feel, but it also earned at least 4 stars on every test we put it through.
Helix is popular for its wide variety of firmness levels, offering three collections with six hybrid beds each. While these beds are not technically sold as a split king, you can achieve the same setup by getting two twin XL beds. I chose the Helix Dusk from the Core collection because it’s designed to offer strong support without sacrificing comfort. We rated it an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, putting it in the firm category.
One of our testers trying out the Helix Dusk on his side.
Despite its firmer feel, the Helix Dusk still scored highly on our pressure relief tests. Regardless of their weight or body type, all three of our testers reported excellent spinal alignment while back sleeping, giving it an average of 4.7 stars. Our heavy sleeper, Caine Wilkes, said, “I feel fully supported no matter what position I’m in.” While we typically steer side sleepers towards softer mattresses, the Helix Dusk was able to provide enough cushioning at the joints to prevent pressure buildup, earning 4 stars for this position.
Edge support was another highlight, earning the mattress a 4.2-star rating. When our tester Erin Chiles sat on the perimeter, she noticed slight sinkage from the foam layers, but while lying near the edge, she felt completely stable. “I didn’t feel like I would fall or slide off whatsoever,” she said. Even when we placed weighted plates directly on the side of the bed, the edges held firm, making the bed a strong option for couples seeking a split king.
Keep in mind, this mattress is not offered in the split king size. However, it’s the same thing as purchasing two twin XL beds in terms of dimensions. These mattresses, each costing $1,124 at full retail, are typically on sale for 25% off. You can also check out our Helix coupon page for more deals.
Additionally, lightweight sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds will likely find this bed to be very firm, with minimal sinkage. While this is awesome for firm mattress lovers, those seeking more contouring may need a softer bed. Likewise, anyone seeking a slow-moving, hugging sensation may prefer an all-foam bed instead of a hybrid.

Budget Shoppers

The Nectar is that rare foam mattress that’s supportive enough for stomach sleepers, and should keep their hips aligned with their shoulders.
Pros of the Nectar
The Nectar offers a balanced feel, with contouring and support in equal measure.
Back sleepers should feel supported, but pleasantly cushioned on the Nectar.
Couples shouldn’t be too disturbed by movement, as the Nectar isolates motion well.
Cons of the Nectar
The Nectar isn’t supportive enough to be one of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers, which accommodate folks weighing 250 pounds or more. While heavy side sleepers might be comfortable, heavy back sleepers with chronic pain will need something softer and heavy stomach sleepers will probably need something firmer.

The Nectar delivers a balance of comfort and support: it’s definitely contouring, but still provides a firm enough foundation for most light to average weight sleepers, especially if they sleep on their back or stomach. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.
What our tester says:
“I think back sleepers would be especially happy on this bed. They’ll get plenty of support from the firm memory foam in the Nectar Classic, which should translate to great pressure relief and a good night’s sleep. Hot sleepers who have to have a memory foam mattress should also have no trouble at all falling asleep on this bed.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Memory foam is best known for its plush, contouring abilities. According to Dr. Dasgupta, it’s one of the best materials for providing pressure relief, as it molds and conforms to the body. However, some complain that the lack of an innerspring coil layer compromises the support.
I chose the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress as my top choice for this category because it provides superior support in addition to soft comfort, earning an average of 4 stars for pressure relief. Not only is it super-affordable and compatible with most sleepers, but it’s also not prone to heat-trapping like some other all-foam models, so we rated it 4.5 stars for cooling.
The Nectar is made from three layers of foam — two softer, contouring layers and a firm, high-density polyfoam base. While the top two layers allow for a bit of sinkage at the hips and shoulders, the sturdy support layer keeps the sleeper lifted up and out of the mattress. This balanced feel was rated a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it has a true medium feel.
Testing the Nectar mattress in the back-sleeping position.
The soft memory foam layers allowed this bed to relieve pressure in both the back and side sleeping positions, earning 4 out of 5 stars for both positions. Regardless of their weight, every tester felt cushioning at their lower back and support at their hips. In this position, average-weight tester Sosha Lewis said, “My spine is aligned very well and I don’t feel a ton of pressure building anywhere on my body.”
When side sleeping, our average-weight and heavy testers found enough sinkage to relieve pressure at their hips and shoulders. However, our lightweight tester Asha Birja didn’t sink as far into the layers, perceiving the bed as firmer than average. She noted a bit of discomfort in her joints, so lightweight sleepers may need a slightly softer bed.
Another area where this bed stood out was its cooling capabilities. Hot sleepers sometimes avoid memory foam mattresses, as this material is known to trap heat. Although the Nectar doesn’t contain coils to promote airflow, we still found great temperature regulation, which earned the bed 4.5 stars. Our tester Kenny Timper said, “The Nectar Classic’s cover contains cooling fibers and a breathable fabric, and I found it to be quite cool-to-the-touch when lying on it.”
In addition to lightweight side sleepers, I think combination sleepers may struggle on this mattress since it only earned 3.5 stars for responsiveness. Since its comfort layers are so plush and slow-moving, they provide a hugging sensation along the body. Although comfortable, this can make combination sleepers feel stuck as they try to switch between sleeping positions.
Our expert Kenny Timper takes thermal readings of a Nectar mattress.

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
If you and your partner have different firmness preferences but don’t want the hassle of purchasing two different beds, consider a split king model that offers different firmness options, such as the Nolah Evolution. This hybrid bed is offered in three levels — Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Considering its 4.6-star edge support, 4.5-star cooling, and 4-star responsiveness, I consider this bed one of the best mattresses for couples. Regardless of which firmness you choose, both partners can appreciate strong support combined with pressure relief at the joints.
In our studio, we chose to test the Luxury Firm model, which is the brand’s most popular option, and rated it a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. In context, this means it has medium firmness but leans just a tad firmer than average. When our tester Erin Chiles lay down, she said, “I felt like I was floating on top of the soft-pillow-top layer. It hugs my body nicely, and I could feel the inner layers of the mattress supporting me.”
We found the Luxury Firm model to be compatible with both back and side sleeping positions, earning 4.3 stars for pressure relief in both. Although it leans a bit firmer, it still does a nice job of cushioning sensitive areas on the body, as well as maintaining the spine in neutral alignment. When our Chief Medical Product Tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, tested this bed, he said, “I have a feeling of weightlessness, which I don’t always get when I’m on my side.” However, he notes that side sleepers with preexisting shoulder pain may prefer the Plush level, as he felt slight pressure building in that area.
One of our testers lying on a pressure mat on the Nolah Evolution (back-sleeping position).
When I think about this mattress, I always remember when my colleague Sosha Lewis performed the cooling test. She had just worked out and hadn’t quite cooled down yet. When she lay on the Nolah Evolution, she said, “I can feel the heat leaving my body.” The bed helped her quickly return to a neutral temperature, so she rated its cooling abilities 4.5 stars.
Sosha was also impressed by the 4.6-star edge support and 4-star responsiveness on this bed. The mattress provided held strong along the perimeter, allowing both partners to fully spread out while still feeling stable. It’s also easy to move around on this bed despite its soft pillow top. Although it’s plush, Sosha was still able to easily move from one position to another.

Before purchasing this mattress, know that it may be out of budget for some shoppers, as a split king currently costs $3,454 before discounts or Nolah coupons. Additionally, this bed isn’t a great choice for those seeking a low-loft mattress, as it has a whopping 15-inch height.

The Bear Star Hybrid is a softer hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring coils. It offers pressure relief, contouring, and solid support for many sleeper types, but especially back, side, and combination sleepers. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy. I loved how plush the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt comfortable and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
When we talk about value, we mean whether the quality of a mattress’s materials and testing performance match its overall price. For the best value superlative, I had to go with the Bear Star Hybrid. When it comes to split king beds, we know they’re on the pricier side, but I was impressed with the materials, which have obtained two quality certifications. Bear’s company policies, 4.6-star edge support, and 5-star responsiveness also help justify the cost. Overall, this bed provides a luxury hotel feel and will likely last you several decades.
The materials used in this bed have been third-party tested to meet strict safety standards, verifying their quality. The entire bed is also GREENGUARD Gold certified, ensuring low VOC emissions to improve indoor air quality.
Additionally, Bear has impressive company policies. Not only does the mattress ship to your door for free, but you also have a 120-night sleep trial. Most impressively, Bear offers a limited lifetime warranty, which speaks to the brand’s confidence in its product and overall durability.
During testing, our testers fell in love with the plush pillow-top layer, which effectively cushioned sensitive pressure points. They were also wowed by the coil layer, which provided enough support to keep our heavy tester lifted and aligned from head to toe. With a hybrid construction, we found a balance between contouring and spinal support, rating the Bear Star a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. We found this feels most compatible with back and stomach sleeping, and side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.
One of our testers gettin a feel for the Bear Star Hybrid’s cover.
This excellent support was not only felt in the middle of the bed, but along the sides as well. During our subjective sitting and lying down tests, Kenny Timper felt extremely secure and stable, saying, “When I applied weight to the edges, they didn’t sink down much at all.” When we add the data from our objective weighted test, the Bear Star earns an average of 4.6 stars for edge support.
At full retail, a split king Bear Star costs $3,711. Bear typically always has a sale running, so you’ll probably find this bed listed for around $2,600. You can also check out our Bear coupon page for more discounts. Considering the mattress’s premium pillow top, durable materials, lifetime warranty, and 4.4-star overall performance, I think it’s a great bang for your buck.
While the Bear has a touch of plushness to it, it may be too firm for lightweight side sleepers, who will likely find more pressure relief from a softer mattress. Additionally, some sleepers may not enjoy the “lumps” caused by the quilting in the pillow top and may prefer a standard cover.

The Brookyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s more high-end mattresses. It’s got a ton of cooling features in it that can help hot sleepers sleep cool all night. It’s also available in three different firmnesses, so it can accommodate all of the sleeping positions. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“First and foremost, I’d recommend this mattress to hot sleepers. This bed sleeps nice and cool thanks to special phase change technology and gel infusions. The Aurora Luxe is also a nice pick for back sleepers. This mattress in the Medium model is medium-soft, so it should contour the hips while also lifting them into alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
If you’re constantly battling overheating and sweaty nights, you may benefit from a mattress that contains cooling materials and features a breathable construction. When it comes to cooling, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is my favorite mattress. With a perfect 5-star cooling score, this bed excels at beating the heat while also providing durable support. I also love this bed for couples in general, as it earned 4.2 stars or higher in every performance test, resulting in an overall average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.
As a bed specifically designed for hot sleepers, we weren’t surprised the Aurora Luxe had an initial cool-to-the-touch feel. Our cooling tester, Sosha Lewis, used a thermal temperature gun to measure how many degrees the bed warmed up after she lay on it for five minutes. We were impressed that it only warmed by 5.3 degrees (see the results below), which indicates outstanding 5-star cooling abilities.
The Aurora Luxe is a great choice for split king seekers because it’s offered in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm. We tested the Medium model and found it to feel firmer than average, scoring 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This feels wonderful in the back-sleeping position, which our testers rated 4.7 stars for pressure relief. However, we found it a tad too firm in the side sleeping position, which we rated 3.7 stars. These sleepers will likely find better contouring on the Soft model.
Dr. Tedesco agrees that the Medium model of the Aurora Luxe is best for back sleepers, as he noted neutral alignment and even pressure distribution in this position. He also thinks back sleepers with back pain can find relief on this bed due to the neutral anatomical position. On his back, he said, “My thoracic and lumbar spines are very neutral. There isn’t a lot of flexion or extension.”
In addition to cooling and pressure relief, we saw high performance in the categories most important to couples sharing a split king — edge support and responsiveness. Since the Aurora Luxe earned 4.4 stars on our edge support test, I don’t think couples will need to worry about their split king sagging in the middle or along the sides. Sexually active couples will also be able to switch positions easily, because this bed earned 5 stars for responsiveness based on 4 separate tests.
In general, I don’t recommend the Medium model to side sleepers, especially those with preexisting shoulder pain. I’d also steer budget shoppers away from this bed; two twin XL mattresses (which is the same as a split king) cost $2,930 at full retail. However, this bed is usually on sale, and you can also find discounts on our Brooklyn Bedding coupon page.

The Titan Plus mattress is a durable mattress made with heavy sleepers in mind. It’s firm and features heavy-duty coils and Titanflex foam that makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be especially comfortable. For more information on the Titan Plus, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Titan Plus lives up to its name as a good mattress for heavier sleepers. It will offer them the deep compression support and durability they need.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds typically need an ultra-supportive mattress that prevents their spine from curving unnaturally. I love the Titan Plus by Brooklyn Bedding for these sleepers, because it was specifically designed for them. Not only is this bed supportive enough for larger bodies, but it also has great 4.5-star cooling abilities, as well as strong 4.6-star edge support.
In addition to heavy sleepers, lightweight and average-weight sleepers who prefer a very firm feel can enjoy the Titan Plus mattress. When our testers tried this bed in different sleeping positions, they experienced more lift and support than deep sinkage and contouring. They rated this mattress an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, meaning it’s a solidly firm bed. While this feel is typically best for back and stomach sleeping, it may still appeal to some side sleepers if they don’t currently struggle with sensitive joints.
One of our testers trying out the Titan Plus in the back-sleeping position.
Our expert tester and heavy sleeper, Marten Carlson, evaluated the Titan for people with his body type and found excellent pressure relief when lying on his back. He gave its pressure relief performance 5 stars. “This is great for back sleeping, especially for a bigger guy like me,” he said. “I’m feeling great alignment and overall fantastic support.”
However, an outstanding support system isn’t just in the center of the bed. It extends from edge to edge. Our testers felt lifted and secure when sitting and lying along the edge of the bed, with very minimal sinkage when pressure is applied. These edges earned 4.6 stars overall because heavy sleepers can get right up to the edge without worrying about falling off.
The Titan Plus also made this list due to its 4.5-star cooling capabilities. Hot sleepers often wake up feeling sweaty and overheated, so finding good temperature regulation is crucial for these sleepers. Although the Titan isn’t cool to the touch, our testers didn’t feel themselves warming up while lying on it. A thermal gun showed that the bed’s temperature only increased by 4.5 degrees after someone lay on it for 5 minutes (see the results below). So, hot sleepers shouldn’t have to worry about overheating.
Since this bed is designed for heavy sleepers, I don’t recommend it for those who weigh less than 130 pounds. When Dr. Tedesco tested this bed, he said, “A lightweight person won’t sink into this bed as much. Therefore, they may not feel quite as comfortable.” In the same breath, most side sleepers will likely crave more cushioning at their hips and shoulders.
Most online mattresses are available in either a split king size or a twin XL size. With so many different mattresses on the market, there were some beds I loved that just didn’t make the cut. Below, I’ll briefly introduce two honorable mentions and why they didn’t make the list.
The Avocado Green is an organic latex hybrid mattress that lands at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. We were impressed with the quality of this bed’s materials, which earned over eight third-party certifications. During testing, we found it ideal for back sleepers. The Green also has excellent 5-star responsiveness that combination sleepers can appreciate. Split king seekers should also enjoy the 4.6-star edge support. However, this bed fell short on our cooling test, earning 3.5 stars. Latex foam also has a very unique feel that may not appeal to all sleepers, so I chose mattresses that are more universally appealing.
As one of my personal favorites, I was tempted to include the Leesa Sapira Chill in this roundup. With a medium-soft feel that we rated a 6 on the firmness scale, this bed offers a great blend of hugging foam and sturdy support. Not only is it compatible with all three sleeping positions, but it also earned 4.5 stars in cooling. However, the plush pillow top layer slightly traps the body and earns only 2 stars for responsiveness, making it hard on combination sleepers and sexually active couples. I also don’t trust the edges to remain secure, as the bed only earned 3.4 stars on our edge support test.
How We Picked and Tested The Best Split King Mattress
Our team of certified sleep science coaches and mattress experts has tested almost every major online mattress on the market using a rigorous testing methodology. Not only do we evaluate the bed’s materials, construction, and feel, but we also assess its performance in areas most important to sleepers.
When rounding up the best split king mattresses, I honed in on four main performance categories — pressure relief, edge support, cooling, and responsiveness. These categories also happen to be some of the most important elements for co-sleeping. Since couples most often purchase split king beds, I chose beds that make bed-sharing just a bit more comfortable.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is an important factor for any sleeper to consider, but it’s especially important for people with preexisting pain. The ability of a mattress to relieve pressure depends on the sleeper’s individual body type and sleeping position. Therefore, couples with different body types and preferences can benefit from a split king mattress. This allows each individual to choose a mattress that best fits their sleep needs, without requiring them to sleep in separate rooms.
We test pressure relief by having sleepers of various body types lie on the mattress in both back and side sleeping positions and observe where they feel cushioned and where they feel tension. We conduct a pressure map test, which involves lying on a specialized mat that senses pressure and translates the results using color-coded thermal imaging. Areas displayed in blue and green indicate good pressure relief, while red and yellow areas indicate a rise in pressure.
Edge Support
When shopping for a new mattress, edge support is a key factor that could make or break your comfort. Since a split king is two twin XL beds pushed together, the inner edges of each mattress form the center of the bed. Without solid edge support, this center can sag and create an uncomfortable dip, especially if one partner tends to sleep towards the middle of the bed.
Stable edges allow couples to fully spread out and enjoy every inch of the mattress without falling off the sides. This is also important for older adults and people with mobility issues, as they can bear down on the secure perimeter when getting in and out of bed.
We evaluate edge support using a three-step process. First, we stack weighted plates on the edge of the mattress and measure how much it compresses. Then, a tester sits on the side to gauge stability when putting pressure directly on the edge. Finally, the tester lay near the edge in multiple sleeping positions to check if they felt secure or if they were about to fall off.
Cooling
If you’re a hot sleeper, you understand that the struggle is real. Waking up feeling sweaty and overheated is no fun; fortunately, this can be alleviated by a mattress featuring cooling materials and technology. Split king mattresses can be ideal for hot-sleeping couples, as two bodies heat up more quickly than just one. Since you and your partner will technically be sleeping on different beds, you won’t have to worry about your partner’s heat traveling to your side of the bed.
To test cooling, we use a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature of the mattress before and after someone lies on it for 5 minutes. As they lie on the bed, the tester takes note of whether they can feel the bed warming beneath them. If the mattress temperature increases by less than 4 degrees, we consider it to have outstanding cooling abilities. However, the more the temperature increases, the more likely you are to experience warmer nights.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress bounces back after pressure is applied, as well as how easily it allows for movement across the surface. A highly responsive mattress makes it easy to switch between sleeping positions without feeling stuck, which is particularly crucial for combination sleepers and couples who are sexually active. Through our testing, we’ve found that innerspring coils and natural latex offer the best responsiveness. In contrast, softer all-foam mattresses can make some sleepers feel “trapped” as they try to move around.
We assess responsiveness using three tests: one subjective and two objective. Our subjective test is called the switch test, where a tester alternates between sleeping positions, observing how easily they can be moved. Then, we place a weighted kettlebell on the bed and measure how quickly the bed returns to its original shape once it’s removed. Next, we measure the depth to which the weight sinks into the bed. Finally, we drop a medicine ball from 6 feet above the bed and measure how high it bounced.
What to Consider in a Split King mattress
When choosing a split king mattress, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. Below, I’ll break down some essentials you’ll want to consider before making your purchase.
What is a Split King Mattress?
A split king mattress is the same size as a traditional king bed but is essentially halved down the middle to create two separate beds. Each of these mattresses has dimensions of 38” by 80”. Many people don’t realize that two twin XL beds equal one king mattress. If a specific brand doesn’t carry the split king size, simply order two twin XLs, and you’re set.
This type of mattress is ideal for couples who share a bed but have different sleep preferences. For example, if one person is a side sleeper who needs a soft mattress and the other is a stomach sleeper who needs firmer support, they can both choose a bed that suits their needs. This size is also great for sleepers frequently disturbed by their partner’s motion. Since they’re completely separate mattresses, you won’t have to worry about finding a bed with good motion isolation.
Adjustable Bed Frames
In addition to having different firmness preferences, some couples opt for a split king bed to pair with an adjustable base. These bases allow sleepers to alter their head and foot elevation, with some offering a “split” down the middle. This allows each side of the frame to operate independently, so each person can choose their preferred sleeping angle for the ultimate sleep experience.
Split bases can also be great for couples with different nighttime routines. If you like to stay up and read while your partner snoozes, you can place yourself in the upright position while your partner remains flat. Additionally, you can elevate just one sleeper’s head to help reduce snoring and sleep apnea.
Dr. Dasgupta recommends adjustable bases for a wide variety of sleepers. When we asked who an adjustable bed base is best for, he said, “If you experience any discomfort while lying flat, or if you suffer from back pain, sleep apnea, or have bad acid reflux, an adjustable bed allows you to customize your position to find the ultimate comfort.”
Materials
If you’re planning to pair your split king with an adjustable base, look for materials that easily bend and contour, such as memory foam or latex foam. As the base adjusts, you want your mattress to lie flush without significant gaps between the two.
Sometimes, the coils inside innerspring and hybrid mattresses make it difficult for a mattress to completely contort to an upright position, especially if you’re also messing with the leg elevation. However, most mattresses are compatible with an adjustable base when using just slight head or leg elevation, rather than bending it into a taco shape. Below, I’ll briefly break down the most popular mattress types and what you can expect.
A look at the construction of various mattresses.
Memory foam mattresses are known for pressure relief and sinkage, which can be beneficial for side sleepers and those with sensitive joints. The downside of these beds is that they’re more prone to heat trapping and sometimes lack long-lasting support.
Innerspring mattresses are primarily made of coils, but often include a thin layer of foam up top for a bit of pressure relief. The coil layer makes these beds bouncy and supportive, but some sleepers desire a bit more cushioning from their mattress.
Hybrid mattresses combines the soft pressure relief from all-foam beds with the sturdy coils from innerspring beds to create a balanced feel. This can appeal to sleepers seeking a balance between softness and firmness.
Latex mattresses contain a layer of latex foam derived from either Talalay or Dunlop latex. These beds tend to be very bouncy and responsive, and also naturally cooling. This material is often paired with coils or other layers of foam.
Firmness
The ideal firmness level for you is largely determined by your individual body type, sleeping position, and individual preferences. Since two sleepers may have very different specifications, they may benefit from a split king design that allows you to choose your own bed based on your needs. For example, what feels too firm to a lightweight side sleeper could be way too soft for a heavy stomach sleeper. If you’re unsure of which weight class you fall in, check out this handy chart. You can also head over to our best mattress for heavy people and best mattress for lightweight sleepers pages for more options tailored to your needs.

When it comes to your sleeping position, you may feel most comfortable on your side, back, stomach, or a mixture of each. Depending on your orientation, your weight is supported by different parts of your body. For this reason, different sleepers need different levels of support and comfort. Below, I’ll break down these positions and what type of bed is best.
Side sleepers place the majority of their weight on their hips and shoulders, so they’re typically best on a softer bed that allows for sinkage and pressure relief at the joints. We recommend all-foam or hybrid beds that fall between a 5 and 6.5 on the firmness scale.
Back sleepers do best on a bed that balances support and pressure relief. While most firmness levels work for these sleepers, it’s important to prioritize cushioning at the hips and lower back, as well as spinal alignment.
Stomach sleepers need more lift at their hips to keep them in line with the shoulders, promoting a straight, neutral spinal position. We typically recommend firm beds that are rated between 6.5 and 8 on the firmness scale.
Combination sleepers benefit from a bouncy, responsive mattress that’s easy to move around on. We typically recommend beds containing buoyant latex foam or springy coils, which prevent the sleeper from feeling “stuck” when switching positions.
FAQs
What is a split king mattress?
A split king mattress is exactly what it sounds like – a king mattress “split” down the middle to create two separate beds. These individual mattresses are 38” by 80”, which is the same dimensions as a twin XL bed. If you and your partner are interested in different beds, you can each order your own twin XL to create a full king.
Is there a gap in the middle of a split king mattress?
Since a split king is composed of two separate mattresses, there is a small gap in the middle. This is why it’s so important to prioritize edge support to prevent the middle of the bed from sagging. This gap can be reduced by using a gap filler, adding a topper, or placing one set of king sheets over both mattresses.
What size sheets should you use on a split king mattress?
A split king is basically two twin XL beds pushed together, so you can either use two sets of twin XL sheets or just one set of king sheets.
How much does a split king mattress cost?
Split kings are typically more expensive than king-size mattresses. We’ve seen them range in price from $700 to around $4,000. The mattresses on this roundup range from $1,098 to $3,711, with the average price being around $2,400.
How do you keep a split king mattress from separating?
Many split king beds come with a device to keep them together, such as an iron plate connector. You can also purchase a split king connector to keep the beds from sliding apart.
