Hip pain can put a real strain on salsa night and generally make it difficult to get through the day. Thankfully, the right mattress topper can help ease that discomfort and prevent you from waking up with aching hips. Mattress toppers can add a layer of cushioning and support to make your bed feel brand new, providing your hips with the pressure relief they need for better sleep.

Our product testing team got hands-on with a wide range of toppers, focusing on how well they relieved pressure at the hips, maintained proper alignment, and kept sleepers comfortable in different positions. We also evaluated durability, motion isolation, and support to find toppers that can withstand long-term use.

With years of testing experience and input from our certified sleep science coaches, we’ve already helped more than 60,000 readers sleep more comfortably. To ensure our picks are both accurate and medically relevant, we also consulted with Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, who stressed the importance of spinal alignment and supportive materials in managing hip pain.

Read on to see which mattress toppers made our list for the best hip pain relief.

What I Looked for in Best Mattress Toppers for Hip Pain

On my quest to find the best mattress toppers for hip pain, I focused on durable models with premium materials that provide soft support and effective motion isolation. My fellow product testers and I used our thorough review methodology to assess how these toppers should perform night after night.

  • Materials: Materials are everything when it comes to finding high-quality mattress toppers. Sleepers with hip pain require a topper that provides soft cushioning for their sensitive joints without being prone to sagging. To ensure our picks offer that, I looked for models with durable materials and third-party certifications where possible.
  • Motion Isolation: There are numerous latex and memory foam options on this list. An indicator of quality for mattress toppers with all-foam constructions is how well they dampen motion. As a result, many of the mattress toppers on this list provide excellent motion isolation, which is a plus for couples and light sleepers with a restless partner.
  • Support: Alleviating hip pain requires more than a soft touch. In many scenarios, people suffer from hip pain because their mattresses are sagging around their lower bodies. I only included mattress toppers that were supportive enough to provide healthy spinal alignment, along with the plush cushioning needed to take tension off sensitive joints.

When sleepers experience hip pain, it is often because the surface they sleep on is too firm to cushion their hips or too soft, causing them to sink through the layers of the mattress. If your mattress is beginning to wear down, a solid topper can help you find that balance again. For this reason, the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper is my pick for the best mattress topper for hip pain. Our in-house product tester found that it offered ample support without being too firm around her hips. During testing, she gave it a 4 out of 5 or higher in our support and motion isolation categories.

After spending some time with the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Topper, our tester found it to be a great option for back and side sleepers experiencing joint pain. On her side, she felt it cradled her hips and shoulders while keeping them aligned with the rest of her body. This balance motivated her to give it a strong 4 out of 5 in our support category.

“I would recommend this to side sleepers experiencing shoulder and hip pain,” our tester said. “While it is not a replacement for a supportive mattress, this topper offers an extra boost while being soft enough to cushion high-pressure areas. However, stomach sleepers may sink further into this mattress topper and feel a little pressure in the lower back.”

She was also pleased by the motion isolation of the Graphite Memory Foam Topper. Memory foam is known for its ability to dampen motion and prevent disturbances from transferring from one side of the mattress to the other. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the all-foam Saatva mattress topper passed this test with flying colors. She gave it another impressive 4-star rating in this category.

“You’ll feel a little bit of movement on this, though a lot of that also depends on your mattress as well,” she said. “I don’t think your sleep will be disrupted, especially if you’re not a light sleeper. I could hardly feel my testing partner’s movements as they tossed and turned on the other side of the bed.”

As challenging as it was to find fault with the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Topper, our in-house product tester thought there was still room for improvement. Since this mattress topper is made solely of memory foam, some sleepers may overheat on it at night. She would have liked to have seen a cool-to-the-touch cover on this model.

Memory foam mattresses and mattress toppers are typically ideal for sleepers with hip pain because high-quality foam gently cushions their sensitive joints while still providing a supportive surface to sleep on. The Brooklyn Bedding Gel Swirl Memory Foam Mattress Topper wins in this category because it offers all of the above, alongside cooling gel infusions to keep the pressure and heat off as you sleep. Product tester Riley Otis praised its motion isolation and materials, awarding this mattress topper a 4 out of 5 or higher in both categories.

Like many high-quality memory foam mattress toppers, the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Mattress Topper did a great job of dampening motion. While testing this mattress topper with her partner, Riley didn’t notice much motion traveling from one side of the bed to the other. She gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category, making it an excellent option for those who share a mattress with a restless pet or partner.

“This makes the bed feel like a true memory foam mattress,” Riley said. “While it contours around the body, I didn’t feel stuck in the foam or like my mobility was compromised. I also thought this topper did an excellent job absorbing motion at the source and preventing it from traveling across the mattress. When my partner was tossing and turning, I couldn’t detect their movement at all. I couldn’t feel them getting in and out of bed either. I think this is a great choice for couples.”

Aside from being an effective enemy against pressure buildup and motion transfer, the Brooklyn Bedding Gel Swirl Memory Foam Mattress Topper also uses high-quality materials. Riley noted that the memory foam topper felt thick and durable while maintaining a neutral temperature that hot sleepers should appreciate, thanks to the cooling gel infusions.

“This topper is durable and made with high-quality materials,” Riley said. “Unlike cheaper memory foam toppers that are prone to sagging, this one should definitely hold up through the warranty.”

That said, before you purchase the Gel Swirl Memory Foam Mattress Topper, there are a couple of things to be aware of. During testing, Riley only gave it a 3 out of 5 for support, noting that while it sinks more than firmer all-foam models, it should be an excellent buy for sleepers with hip pain who need to soften their too-firm mattresses. She also thought its full retail price was a bit steep at $215 for a queen-sized unit. Fortunately, this gel-infused memory foam mattress topper often goes on sale for $129.

Organic mattresses and accessories offer perks beyond their environmental benefits. Many of the organic products that we have tested are high-quality, durable, and generally hypoallergenic. All of these extras apply to the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper, which I awarded a 4 out of 5 or higher in the support and motion isolation categories during testing.

One thing I noticed about the Birch Plush Organic Topper was that its contouring was more in line with the memory foam mattress toppers I tested. While it was still just as responsive as other latex toppers, it provided a surprising amount of cushioning and pressure point relief around my hips and shoulders while lying on my side.

Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper 5
I found the Birch Plush Organic Topper to be a great mattress if it’s within your budget.

Its motion isolation was also memory foam-like. I tested this mattress topper with a colleague in our Charlotte, NC, studio, and barely noticed their movements ripple across the surface of the bed when they tossed and turned on their side. I gave it a 4 out of 5 for motion isolation; while you can still feel some movements trickling in from the other side, it shouldn’t be enough to disturb you at night.

Similar to many other organic products I’ve tested, the Plush Organic Mattress Topper features top-notch materials. I gave this mattress topper a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category because nothing felt flimsy or like it would tear easily. It also has GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold certifications, meaning Birch uses latex of the highest quality, and its manufacturing practices cut down chemical emissions.

That said, my only gripe about this mattress topper is its price. While you certainly get what you pay for, the Birch mattress topper is a little steep at $499 (or $374 when discounted). However, if it’s within your budget and you’re looking for a high-quality, eco-friendly product, the Plush Organic Mattress Topper is an excellent choice.

If your mattress is too firm, it could cause soreness around your shoulders, hips, and lower back. Fortunately, if your mattress is not sagging and is in overall good shape, a high-quality, soft mattress topper might be an easy and affordable remedy. The Nolah Mattress Topper is one of the softest toppers I have tried, making it a perfect fit for sleepers who think their bed feels like lying on a diving board. I personally tested this topper and gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 in the motion isolation and materials categories, thanks to its highly effective motion-dampening abilities and durable yet comfortable feel.

Nolah Mattress Topper 9
I was thoroughly impressed with the Nolah Mattress Topper.

During testing, I found this mattress topper to be super plush, with most of my body sinking into it. If your bed feels too firm, and you’d prefer something to envelop you and cushion your hips and other sensitive areas, there is no other soft topper that I would recommend over this one. I could feel the pressure actively leaving my shoulders and hips as I lay on my side.

This softness also contributes to the Nolah Mattress Topper’s strong motion isolation, which I gave a perfect 5 out of 5. I tested this mattress topper with a colleague at our Charlotte, NC, testing studio, and I could hardly tell they were moving on their side of the bed. I lay blindfolded on one side of the bed while they tossed, turned, and got out of bed on the opposite side. During this test, I couldn’t even tell they had left the bed.

I also gave the Nolah Mattress Topper a perfect 5 out of 5 in the materials category. Thanks to its organic cover and cushiony memory foam, I believe it would hold up over five years. However, sleepers over 230 pounds may experience some low points in the topper over time, since it is so soft and lacks a true support layer.

I also wouldn’t recommend this to anyone but sleepers with a bed that is too hard for them. Using this mattress topper on an already-soft or sagging sleep surface could further impact your body’s alignment, causing you to sink around your lower body and exacerbate your hip pain.

A cheap mattress topper that is unsupportive or lacks cushioning can worsen your chronic pain, making it essential to strike a balance between value and quality. Fortunately, the Bear Pro Topper offers plush support that is perfect for pain relief at an affordable price. It often goes on sale for around $225, which is a steal for a mattress topper this high-quality. Our in-house testing team gave this mattress topper a perfect 5 out of 5 in the support and motion isolation categories.

If your hip pain is caused by a mattress that is beginning to sag around your lower body, a supportive mattress topper can provide the lift needed to prop your body back into alignment. During testing, my colleague and fellow sleep product expert gave the Bear Pro Topper a 5-star support score, thanks to its high-density memory foams that kept her spine in a neutral position while still contouring her hips and shoulders to ward off any pressure buildup.

A closeup of a hand pressing into the Bear Mattress Protector.
Our tester found the Bear Pro Topper to be a great balance between sinkage and support for those who may be experiencing hip pain.

“This mattress topper really has the best of both worlds,” she said. “It provides plenty of support even though it is so plush. Meanwhile, that plushness allows enough sinkage for my hips to get some effective pressure relief.”

Couples with a restless sleeper will also appreciate the excellent motion isolation of the Bear Pro Topper. Our tester awarded this topper another 5 out of 5 in this category because its slow-moving feel did a great job of preventing motion from traveling to the other side of the bed when trying it with another product tester.

“I couldn’t feel any movement from my testing partner’s side of the bed with the Bear topper,” she said. “There is almost no bounce or rippling of motion throughout the topper.”

However, like many other memory foam toppers, the Bear Pro doesn’t have the best responsiveness. If you or your partner is a combination sleeper who frequently tosses and turns at night to get comfortable, you might be better off with a natural latex mattress topper instead.

Overheating when you are already dealing with hip pain can make falling asleep nearly impossible and lead to poor sleep quality. Fortunately, the ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper offers equal measures of pressure relief and temperature regulation for folks who sleep hot. Our in-house product testing team rated the ViscoSoft mattress topper a 4 out of 5 or higher in cooling and support.

If you’re looking for ways to beat the body heat at night without spending money on a cooling mattress, it doesn’t get much better than the ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper. Our in-house product tester gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 in the cooling category, praising its breathable materials and exceptional temperature-regulating abilities.

To test its temperature-regulating performance, our product tester used a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature of the ViscoSoft topper before and after using it for five minutes. After five minutes of lying on this mattress topper, the surface temperature increased by 4.3 degrees, which puts it on par with some of our best cooling mattress picks.

“The surface of the topper was cool to the touch for the entire time I was on it,” she said. “This is easily one of the coolest, most breathable surfaces I’ve ever lain on. If you want to try a cooling topper before splurging on a new mattress, try this one.”

During testing, our team also noted its impressive support. The ViscoSoft Active Cooling Copper Topper is incredibly soft; however, our in-house product tester found it supportive for most people, especially those with hip pain. She gave it a 4.5 out of 5 because it offered just enough support to keep her spine aligned while she lay on her side, while delivering some nice cushioning along her hips and shoulders.

“This could potentially correct even the worst mattresses,” she said. “I love this for back, stomach, or side sleepers. I spent a lot of time in each position, and in each one, it felt like a dream. That said, if you switch positions frequently, you will probably need to put more effort into those movements. It’s not the most responsive surface I’ve been on.”

However, the ViscoSoft topper is not one size fits all. Our testing team noted that it’s not firm or responsive, meaning combination sleepers who prefer a surface that’s easy to move around on will have to look elsewhere.

We also wouldn’t recommend this mattress topper for sleepers weighing over 230 pounds. These individuals will likely sink through the ViscoSoft’s plush surface and will not get enough support to keep their midsections in alignment.

Happsy Organic Mattress Topper – Best Latex Mattress Topper for Hip Pain

Happsy Organic Mattress Topper

Happsy Organic Mattress Topper

This organic topper provides a good amount of cushioning while still being responsive enough for sleepers to move around on. We also found it to be very supportive.

If uncomfortable dips in a saggy mattress are causing tension to build in your hips and lower body at night, a responsive latex mattress topper can provide a quick fix. Latex is known for delivering responsive support while still being plush enough to cushion your sensitive joints. The Happsy Organic Mattress Topper is a prime example of mattress toppers in this class, earning a 4.5 out of 5 or higher in the support, responsiveness, and materials categories.

During testing, tester Cait Giddings brought this mattress topper home to use on an older, unsupportive RV mattress. After spending a few nights on the newly restored bed, she gave the Happsy topper an excellent 4.5 out of 5 for support.

The Happsy Organic Topper
The Happsy Organic Topper at one of our testers’ homes.

“I used this mattress topper to add support and cushioning to an RV mattress that feels like something issued in a holding cell or punitive boot camp,” Cait said. “The topper was an enormous success in this regard; it added a hint of slow-moving, contouring cushion while also bolstering the overall support level of the bed. Previously, my hips always hurt after sleeping on this mattress because I’m a combination back and side sleeper. The Happsy solved this problem and prevented me from having to get a new RV mattress.”

Speaking of combination sleeping, people in this category will appreciate how easily they can move around on the Happsy Organic Mattress Topper. Cait gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 in this category because of how quickly she was able to maneuver from position to position.

“It’s very easy to reposition and move around on the topper,” she said. “At no point did I feel stuck or immobilized.”

Since the Happsy is an organic mattress topper, you can also expect it to be made from durable materials. Our testing team gave this mattress topper another 5 out of 5 in this category, thanks to its durable feel and third-party certifications, including GOLS-certified latex wrapped in GOTS-certified organic cotton. These certifications indicate that Happsy uses the highest-quality latex and cotton in its products.

The only real drawbacks of the Happsy were its motion isolation and cooling. It earned a 3.5 out of 5 in both categories, meaning its performance was only slightly above average. These scores shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for most sleepers with hip pain, especially those with saggy mattresses; however, couples who are sensitive to motion and heat may want to look elsewhere. These sleepers will likely notice more of their partner’s movements and might find it a touch too warm for their liking.

Other Mattress Toppers I Considered

If the mattress toppers on my main list missed the mark for you, the two runners-up below might have what you need. These mattress toppers still showed an impressive performance during testing and barely lost to the options listed above.

Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Topper

If you require more cushioning around your hips and lower body, then the Plush version of the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Topper could be the perfect match. The Talalay latex and soft cotton cover provide the ideal balance of support and cushioning for sleepers with hip pain. That said, I left it off my list because its price is a bit steep at around $500 before any discounts.

Peacock Alley Down Alternative Mattress Topper

We understand that latex and memory foam are not the best fit for all sleepers. For sleepers in this category, the Peacock Alley Down Alternative is an excellent choice. During testing, our in-house team found that this mattress topper effectively cushioned their lower backs while still being dense enough to align their hips with the rest of their bodies. However, it ultimately didn’t make the main list because it warmed up by 7 degrees on our thermal gun test, which is a little too hot for comfort for those who overheat at night.

How We Picked and Tested These Mattresses

To find the best mattress toppers possible for hip pain, my team and I tested them in our Charlotte, NC testing facility. We also brought them home and tested them over multiple nights. Our tests focused on how durable each mattress topper was, how well it isolated motion, and how it supported the spine.

Materials

We started by inspecting the construction quality of each topper. We closely examined the stitching and tested the strength of the fabrics. Because the hips tend to bear more concentrated weight when lying on the side, we prioritized materials that could withstand nightly pressure without breaking down prematurely.

Memory foam and latex stood out in our testing. Both materials are known for contouring to the body’s natural curves, which is especially valuable when trying to reduce pressure buildup around the hips.

As Dr. Dasgupta, board-certified physician and sleep expert, explains, “Materials like memory foam or latex are known to offer better pressure relief, especially when coupled with other features like zoned support.”

P1018952
Our tester assessing the construction of a latex mattress topper.

We also leaned toward toppers with certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard), since they guarantee safety, sustainability, and durability.

Motion Isolation

During testing, my fellow product testers and I paid close attention to how well each topper absorbed movement. As many of these mattress toppers contain memory foam or latex foam, solid motion isolation is typically an indicator of quality. Additionally, every jolt from a restless partner or pet can make it harder to stay asleep, and uninterrupted rest is essential for all sleepers, especially those with hip pain.

Our testers doing a partner test on the Glacier Original Hybrid Mattress
Our testers conducting a partner test.

Foam-based toppers, especially those made with dense memory foam, consistently performed the best in this category. We measured motion transfer by having two testers lie on the bed next to each other. One tester lay blindfolded while the other moved around and changed positions. The toppers with excellent motion isolation allowed our testers to change positions without disturbing their testing partner.

Support

Support was another area of focus, since poor alignment often causes hip pain. We evaluated how much each mattress topper lifted and cradled our hips. To make it onto the list, these mattress toppers had to keep our hips level with our shoulders and knees.

A topper that’s too soft can cause the hips to sink, throwing the spine off balance and worsening pain. On the other hand, a topper that’s too firm may dig into the hip joint and create new pressure points.

The best toppers struck the right balance: They cushioned the hips enough to relieve pressure while still offering enough resistance to keep the pelvis and spine aligned. Targeted support is essential for sleepers struggling with tension building up around their hips and lower bodies.

What to Consider When Buying a Mattress Topper for Hip Pain

Beyond the categories above, there are a handful of personal factors to consider before investing in a mattress topper. Your current mattress, body weight, sleeping position, and preferred firmness level all influence how effective a mattress topper will be for hip pain.

Our sleep expert Jeff relaxes with a Cozy Earth Silk Pillowcase
Getting the support you need can depend on finding a topper that works with your mattress, sleeping style, body weight, and other important factors.

Your Mattress

The type of topper you should invest in often depends on the condition of your current mattress. If your mattress is sagging in the middle, especially around where your hips rest, it can cause spinal misalignment and exacerbate your hip pain. In that case, a more responsive topper (like a latex one) can provide the necessary lift to restore healthy posture.

If your mattress feels too firm, it may be causing tension and pressure to build up directly on the hip joint. In these scenarios, a softer topper with memory foam or plush cushioning can help by creating a gentler, pressure-relieving surface.

Body Weight and Preferred Sleeping Position

Your body weight has a direct impact on how a topper feels and performs. As Dr. Shelby Harris, one of our medical advisors, explains:

“The feel and support of a mattress are regularly affected by how much you weigh. A mattress will feel firmer to those lighter in weight than it does to those heavier in weight.”

Sleepopolis prioritize testing each mattress in every sleeping position
Sleepopolis team testing mattresses in every sleeping position.

For sleepers under 130 pounds, softer toppers typically work best because they prevent pressure points from forming at the hips. In contrast, sleepers weighing 230 pounds or more require a firmer topper with stronger support materials. Excessive sinkage can worsen hip pain and compromise spinal alignment for sleepers in this category.

Sleep position matters equally as much. Side sleepers often benefit from added cushioning that relieves concentrated pressure on the hip joints. Stomach and back sleepers, however, may feel more comfortable on a topper that emphasizes firmness and lift, keeping the pelvis from sagging and promoting even weight distribution.

Firmness

The right firmness is essential for warding off hip pain. A topper that’s too soft can cause your hips to sink excessively, moving the pelvis out of alignment with your shoulders and knees. On the other hand, an overly firm topper may create additional tension and discomfort in the hip joints.

As Dr. Dasgupta explains, “The right type of mattress topper or mattress pad can either alleviate lower back pain. Alleviation comes with proper spinal alignment and medium-firm to firm support. Exacerbation occurs with insufficient support, inadequate cushioning, mattress sagging, and wrong firmness.”

Medium-soft to medium-firm toppers strike the best balance between contouring and support for most folks with hip pain. Still, the ideal firmness varies depending on body type and sleep style, so be sure to consider both factors carefully before making a purchase.

Mattress Toppers for Hip Pain FAQs

Will a mattress topper help my hip pain?

Yes, a mattress topper can provide additional contouring and support that relieves pressure around the hips. The right mattress topper helps distribute weight more evenly and promotes healthier spinal alignment.

How thick should a mattress topper be for hip pain?

It depends on your body type and mattress condition, but most toppers for hip pain on this list are at least 3 inches thick. This thickness allows enough depth to cushion the hips without bottoming out.

Is a harder or softer mattress topper better for hip pain?

The best topper is one that strikes a balance. It should be neither overly firm nor too saggy. If your mattress feels too hard, a plusher topper with gentle contouring is ideal, while a sagging mattress often pairs better with a firm mattress topper made of latex.

Why does my hip hurt when I sleep on a mattress?

Hip pain during sleep often stems from spinal misalignment or uneven pressure on the joints. A mattress that’s too firm can create tension at the hips, while one that lacks proper support can let the pelvis sink out of alignment.
