Sleep Number mattresses are unique, adjustable air beds that allow you to adjust the mattress’s firmness with the simple click of a remote control. This customization enables a single mattress to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. Sleep Numbers also feature SleepIQ technology, which measures factors such as heart rate and temperature while you sleep, prompting the bed to adjust to provide an optimal sleeping experience.
As you’ve probably guessed, Sleep Number’s technology and customization mean that these beds are relatively expensive. So to help you find more affordable options, our certified sleep science coaches have tested more than 330 mattresses and identified a list of seven Sleep Number bed alternatives. To ensure our picks are in line with the latest in sleep science, we also sought input from our Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, and Chief Medical Product Tester Dr. Joe Tedesco, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS. All of these beds are not only more budget-friendly, but are also comparable to a Sleep Number mattress in performance when paired with an adjustable base.
By running each mattress through rigorous testing in our Charlotte, NC, studio and providing hands-on evaluations, we’ve helped more than 60,000 people find the right new bed for them. If you’re looking for a more affordable Sleep Number alternative, we think you’ll join them after reading this roundup.
Our Top Pick for a Sleep Number Alternative
Based on our testing, we think the best Sleep Number alternative is the Helix Sunset Luxe paired with a Helix adjustable base. The Sunset Luxe, like the Sleep Number C4, provides ample pressure relief and contouring. And given Helix’s year-round discounts and holiday deals, it’s priced more affordably.

What I Looked for in Sleep Number Alternative Mattresses
Given the uniqueness of Sleep Number beds, I want to make sure that we match up our alternatives as closely as possible. To do so, my fellow sleep science coaches put each mattress through the complete testing methodology that we developed using our years of experience and input from medical professionals. For this specific list, I paid special attention to the following.
Pressure Relief: Sleep Numbers are adjustable air beds that allow sleepers to pinpoint a mattress that works best for their specific pressure relief needs. Therefore, I honed in on a bed’s pressure relief score to see what sleepers would be best suited for it. All of the mattresses on this list scored a 3 out of 5 or higher in pressure relief, with four of them scoring a 4 or higher.
Responsiveness: Being able to turn from one position to another easily is particularly important for combination sleepers and sexually active couples. Mattresses with stellar response quickly bounce to their original shape after weight has been applied rather than wrapping sleepers in a slow-moving hug. Six of the seven mattresses on this list scored a 4 out of 5 or higher on responsiveness.
Cooling: Waking up in a puddle of sweat can make for a restless night. Since folks may be drawn to Sleep Number beds because of their cooling capabilities, I look for beds that perform similarly well on our temperature regulation tests. All of the mattresses on this list scored a 3.5 out of 5 or higher on cooling, with five them scoring a 4 or higher.
Price: Many Sleep Number mattresses are expensive. Therefore, when looking for alternatives, I considered the cost. Although beds in Sleep Number’s Classic series are reasonably priced, most of the brand’s models start around $2,700. Except for the Saatva Solaire, all of the mattresses on this list cost at least $200 less than that for a queen size.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

The Helix Sunset Luxe is the softest model in Helix’s luxury lineup of hybrid mattress. It’s constructed with two layers of foam and a layer of individually wrapped coils. After the cushioning pillow top, the top layer of memory foam is made from Copper Gel Memory Foam and High-Grade Helix Response Foam. Together, these soft foams work to gently cushion the sleeper’s most sensitive joints. We think this mattress is an especially good pick for side sleepers, who typically need a soft mattress to cradle their hips and shoulders. Learn more in our Helix Luxe video reviews.
What our tester says:
“The Helix Sunset Luxe is very similar to the standard Helix Sunset model, but it’s two inches thicker, has five layers in its construction (the standard Sunset model only four), uses zoned support, and includes a more cooling cover than the standard Sunset model offers. However, both models should work well for similar sleepers, especially back sleepers and side sleepers.” – Logan Block, mattress reviewer
Sleep Number’s c4 is an adjustable mattress, and its foam comfort layer contours to your body for greater pressure relief. After testing hundreds of mattresses, our product experts and certified sleep science coaches landed on the Helix Sunset Luxe as the best alternative for Sleep Number c4. The Sunset Luxe scored a whopping 4.7 in pressure relief for back sleepers. Our testers also found it to be soft yet buoyant, giving it a score 4 out of 5 for responsiveness.
Since the amount of pressure relief felt on a mattress is largely dependent on the sleeper’s weight and preferred sleeping position, we have three mattress experts from three different weight categories — lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight — test the mattress on their side and back to provide detailed evaluations about the pressure they are feeling. We also have them use a specialized mat that provides color-coded thermal images of the amount of pressure being felt in different areas of the body.
My colleague, Riley Otis, served as the lightweight tester, and I represented the average weight. She and I both gave the Sunset Luxe a perfect score for back pressure relief. Riley said, “This bed feels fantastic on my back. It has a nice balance of cushioning and stability, and I like that I can tell how the coils are supporting the softer top layer to provide an enjoyable overall experience.”
Although I think that this is an excellent budget-friendly alternative to the Sleep Number c4 mattress, it’s not ideal for all types of sleepers. Before you add it to your cart, you should know that larger-bodied side sleepers won’t experience the same kind of pressure relief as those who sleep on their backs. My colleague, Caine Wilkes, was our tester over 230 pounds, and he said, “I think this bed is too soft for me to be on my side. The longer I lie here, the more I sink. I can feel my shoulder dipping into the mattress, and that is causing some pressure buildup.”

The Bear Star Hybrid is a softer hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring coils. It offers pressure relief, contouring, and solid support for many sleeper types, but especially back, side, and combination sleepers. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy. I loved how plush the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt comfortable and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
On the Sleep Number pSE, you can adjust each side of the mattress to be a different level of firmness, which is designed for couples with different preferences. While the Bear Star Hybrid isn’t adjustable on its own, it is available in a split king size, which allows couples to choose different firmness levels. However, don’t worry if you decide not to go the split king route because this bed has a medium-firm feel that suits most sleep positions and body types.
That versatility is a huge reason why we chose it as a more budget-friendly alternative to the pSE. However, the Bear Star Hybrid doesn’t rest on its easy-on-the-wallet laurels. Our testing process revealed that this mattress is incredibly responsive, has top-notch edge support, and will keep you cool, earning 5, 4.6, and 4 stars in these categories, respectively.
Certified sleep science coach Kenny Timper tested the mattress’s responsiveness and thinks it will be a solid choice for combination sleepers. Since these sleepers change positions throughout the night, they need a mattress that makes it easy to do that. Kenny said, “It felt super-easy to roll around and switch between different sleeping positions. I had no trouble whatsoever on this mattress.”
Kenny also evaluated how well the Star’s edges provide support and found that you should feel very secure around the perimeter of this mattress. Strong edge support is especially important when getting in and out of bed, and for couples who prefer to use the entire bed surface. “I found it very easy to get in and out of bed,” he said. “I didn’t have to use my hands for assistance, and I think that this would be a great mattress for anyone with mobility issues, including some older sleepers.”
However, we don’t think this is a top pick for lightweight sleepers. When we tested the bed’s pressure relief, our lightweight tester Asha Birjah said she felt a lot of pressure on her back and side. When Asha was on her side, she didn’t feel that her spine was aligned, and when she turned to her back, she said,“ I don’t feel as if my lower back is supported unless I am lying on it a certain way. I keep feeling like I have to readjust. My body just does not feel equally supported.”

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
With the iLE Limited Edition, Sleep Number created a mattress that treats sleepers to soft foam and several cooling features. The Nolah Evolution shares many of the iLE traits. It combines Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam, designed to be a more breathable alternative to memory foam, with innerspring coils that help air move freely. The Evolution’s construction and materials make it a soft, yet supportive cooling mattress that works well for hot sleepers.
Of course, being a Sleep Number bed, the iLe is highly customizable. While you don’t have as many choices with the Evolution, you can pick from three firmness options: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Also, when paired with the brand’s adjustable base, you get a range of height options, along with other features like under-bed lighting, a massage function, and USB chargers.
I sleep on the older version of the Nolah Evolution. It appealed to my husband and me because it has excellent pressure relief for side sleepers and it has exemplary cooling capabilities. Therefore, I, the side sleeper, and my husband, the heat-seeking missile, could both be happy on a bed. However, after I tested the new Evolution model, I thought it was even better than the one we have.
Sleeping in the mattress with my restless husband can sometimes feel like I am going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. For this reason, I always pay special attention to how well a bed isolates motion, and the Evolution knocks this out of the park. When I performed the ripple test, in which I place a large container of water on one side of the bed and then made as much commotion as possible on the other to see how much it splashes, the water gave only the slightest ripple. It was like the water glass scene in Jurassic Park, but without all of the foreboding.
The Evolution’s pressure relief also got high marks and praise from Caine Wilkes, our larger-bodied tester, Asha Birjah, our lightweight tester, and me, the tester for those in our average-weight category. “I really like this!” Asha said. “I think it has a really good balance between firm and contouring, and I feel no pressure or pain.”
Our pressure map results on the Nolah Evolution for a lightweight (left), average-weight (middle), and larger-bodied tester (right) in the side-sleeping position.
Another reason I got the evolution is because I have a nagging hip injury, and Dr. Tedesco recommends this mattress for back and side sleepers with hip pain. “You get some great weightlessness and a slight posterior tilt with this mattress, which is ideal to alleviate hip and back pain if you sleep on your back,” he said. “Even on your side, you may experience a bit of a weightless feeling throughout your midline.”
Our pressure map results on the Nolah Evolution for a lightweight (left), average-weight (middle), and larger-bodied tester (right) in the back-sleeping position.
However, he feels those with shoulder pain may not get the same relief because over time their shoulder may drive deeper into the bed, which can exacerbate their discomfort. Also, although Nolah’s 120-night sleep trial should provide ample time to make a final decision, I wish that it gave consumers a full year to try it out like other mattresses on this list.

This affordable mattress is a great pick for those looking to save.
The Nectar is that rare foam mattress that’s supportive enough for stomach sleepers, and should keep their hips aligned with their shoulders.
Pros of the Nectar
The Nectar offers a balanced feel, with contouring and support in equal measure.
Back sleepers should feel supported, but pleasantly cushioned on the Nectar.
Couples shouldn’t be too disturbed by movement, as the Nectar isolates motion well.
Cons of the Nectar
The Nectar isn’t supportive enough to be one of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers, which accommodate folks weighing 230 pounds or more. While heavy side sleepers might be comfortable, heavy back sleepers with chronic pain will need something softer and heavy stomach sleepers will probably need something firmer.

The Nectar delivers a balance of comfort and support: it’s definitely contouring, but still provides a firm enough foundation for most light to average weight sleepers, especially if they sleep on their back or stomach. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.
What our tester says:
“I think back sleepers are going to love the Nectar Classic. These sleepers will get plenty of support from the firm memory foam in the Nectar Classic, which should translate to great pressure relief and a good night’s sleep. Similarly, lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers should find that they get enough support around their hips to sleep comfortably on this mattress. The Nectar Classic is firm enough to keep these sleepers’ spines in a healthy position.” – Kenny Timper, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
The mattresses in the Sleep Number P Series are known for being more pressure-relieving and contouring than the brand’s other beds. While the Nectar Classic isn’t adjustable, we think it’s an excellent alternative due to its cushy memory foam layers. Also, if you want to give the mattress some additional customization, you can add on the Nectar Adjustable Base, which has a laundry list of differently angled settings and extra bells and whistles, such as a massage function and USB chargers.
Although the Classic was selected as the best alternative to the P series because it also offers the slow-moving cradling that many memory foam fans love, it additionally scored a 4 or higher in every performance category in our testing. These include back and side pressure relief, cooling, edge support, motion isolation, and responsiveness.
Those seeking pressure relief will be drawn to the Classic’s contouring nature. We conduct both objective and subjective tests of pressure buildup to provide a comprehensive breakdown of this performance category. In our objective test, sleepers lie on a specialized mat that provides color-coded images that highlight the amount of pressure felt in different areas of the body.
We also ask our testers if their experience on the mattress matches up to what the thermal images are portraying. The importance of this two-prong assessment was evident with our larger-bodied tester, Caine Wilkes. Caine’s side pressure map showed a couple of moderate pressure areas, but he said that the bed was comfortable and surprisingly supportive. He gave it a 5 out of 5 for side pressure relief.
Our pressure map results on the Nectar Classic for a lightweight (left), average-weight (middle), and larger-bodied tester (right) in the side-sleeping position.
This also falls in line with Dr. Tedesco’s findings when he tested this mattress on his side. He said, “I don’t feel any significant pressure points initially when I’m on my side, which is great.” However, he did caution that there was potential for hip sinkage over time, which could lead to increased pressure buildup in that area.
Our pressure map results on the Nectar Classic for a lightweight (left), average-weight (middle), and larger-bodied tester (right) in the back-sleeping position.
That sinkage could pose issues along the sides of the bed for some sleepers. Certified sleep science coach Kenny Timper had this to say about the Classic’s edge support: “I felt a good deal of sinkage while sitting on the edge of the bed. I could definitely feel myself sliding off a bit. While I don’t think it’s an issue for most sleepers, I wouldn’t recommend this to people who need to bear down onto the mattress to stand up. People with mobility issues may find that they have to put even more effort into getting out of bed.”

The Titan Plus mattress is a durable mattress made with heavy sleepers in mind. It’s firm and features heavy-duty coils and Titanflex foam that makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be especially comfortable. For more information on the Titan Plus, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Titan Plus lives up to its name as a good mattress for heavier sleepers. It will offer them the deep compression support and durability they need.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
As a memory foam mattress, the Sleep Number m7 will likely feel softer to most sleepers than the hybrid Titan Plus (created by Brooklyn Bedding). However, the two mattresses are similar in that they don’t have pillow tops, which gives them a more responsive feel. The Titan Plus is an adjustable bed, and when paired with Brooklyn Bedding’s Ascension Adjustable Base, you get some customization and a suitable comparison to the m7 on its firmer settings. It comes equipped with several presets, including zero gravity, as well as a USB charging port.
Responsiveness is a highly sought-after feature for combination sleepers and sexually active couples, as it allows you to breeze through positions. The Titan delivers a score of 5 out of 5 in this category. However, what impressed me about this bed is that it also received a perfect 5 in motion isolation — and responsiveness and motion isolation aren’t usually a package deal with mattresses. With those flawless scores and a 4 or higher in cooling, edge support, and back pressure relief, the Titan Plus has a lot to recommend.
The Titan Plus’s responsiveness appealed to me as a combination sleeper. However, my eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas morning when I tested its motion isolation capabilities. I always pay special attention to this feature because sharing a bed with my husband is like sleeping with a 190-pound puppy with the zoomies. I am pretty sure that my testing partner, Cait Giddings, could have cannonballed onto her side of the bed, and I wouldn’t have felt it on mine.
To further showcase the Titan’s versatility, our Chief Medical Product Tester Dr. Tedesco found that he experienced no significant pressure buildup when lying on his side on the Titan Plus. We all found this a little surprising given its overall firmness. Dr. Tedesco said, “I don’t have any significant pressure buildup on my side. I was expecting more pressure on my shoulder, but I haven’t felt it much. I am more comfortable on my side than on my back, and I didn’t see that coming.”
However, our lightweight tester, Asha Birjah, didn’t feel the same as Dr. Tedesco when she tested this mattress on her side. She said, “I feel a ton of pressure and a lot of strain on my neck and shoulders. Although the right pillow could make this more comfortable, I don’t recommend this for lightweight side sleepers.” Also, if you like a softer, more contouring mattress, your sleep needs will be better met with a different bed.

The Saatva Solaire is a truly unique mattress that should appeal to a huge number of sleepers. No matter what position you sleep in, you’re likely to find something within its 50 different firmness settings. Simply adjust the firmness and see what feels best. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“The Solaire offers personalized support, and can be set to 50 different firmness levels. So I think it should feel comfortable in almost any sleeping position.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Like all of Sleep Number’s mattresses, the C Series uses a network of flexible air chambers to adjust the bed’s firmness. But unlike the P Series, the C Series is fairly responsive, even at its softest setting. We think a good alternative is the Saatva Solaire, a high-tech adjustable air bed with 50 different firmness settings, ranging from 1 (softest) to 50 (firmest).
We tested out each of these settings and found the Saatva Solaire to be a good fit for a wide variety of sleepers. In terms of firmness, we found that it had a considerable range depending on the setting, spanning from a soft 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale to a very firm 7.5.
Many of our testers found that level 25 was their sweet spot for the Solaire. On 25, our lightweight tester, Asha Birjah, gave it a 5 out of 5 for side pressure relief, while Erin Chiles, who falls in our average-weight classification, gave it a perfect score for back pressure relief. It also received a 4 for its edge support performance, and the Solaire earned an overall rating of 3.4.
Erin said, “Overall, I thought this mattress had great pressure relief for the back and side sleeping positions. At the 25 setting, my lower back feels great, and my shoulders are aligned with my hips.” After lying on our specialized mat, which provides color-coded thermal images of pressure points, Asha reflected that her results showed primarily blue, indicating little to no pressure buildup. She said, “When the Solaire is on the 25 setting, I feel a perfect amount of alignment. I feel aligned, and the bed feels plush and comfortable. I don’t feel any specific pressure in any area. I could fall asleep on this very easily.”
Pressure map results for the Saatva Solaire.
As thorough as our testing criteria are, they can’t replace long-term, real-world experience. One of my colleagues, Tyler Moyer, has been sleeping on the Solaire for more than three years. Tyler told me that he and his partner noticed an improvement in their sleep quality once they started using the Solaire. He said, “Since we can adjust each side to our preferred firmness levels, it’s the first time my spouse and I were both happy with that aspect of our mattress. For me, it allowed me to adjust it to a softer surface, which helped relieve back strain.”
Although I’m glad that Tyler and his wife found a bed that worked for them, my fellow testers and I did have a couple of issues to point out. The first being the somewhat antiquated hard-wired remotes. Although this is a relatively minor issue, it would be nice if they were less clunky. Also, Saatva states that the Solaire has 50 different settings. However, I don’t think you can tell that big of a difference from one setting to another. You need to make larger adjustments to feel any significant differences.

Its hybrid construction makes it easy to move around on.
The coils provide enough support for stomach sleepers, preventing them from sinking too far into the bed.

The Brookyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s more high-end mattresses. It has a ton of cooling features in it that can help hot sleepers sleep cool all night. It’s also available in three different firmnesses, so it can accommodate a variety of sleeping positions and body types. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“Back sleepers should find enough support to promote proper spinal alignment while also getting a bit of cushioning at the lumbar region. And the cooling, motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness scores indicate the Aurora Luxe is a great match for couples.” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
The Aurora Luxe is Brooklyn Bedding’s most luxurious and most cooling model, so it’s a natural alternative to a Sleep Number bed, specifically the i8 mattress. Where the i8 is outfitted with ceramic gel to combat heat, the Aurora Luxe features a cooling system in every layer, from springs that allow for airflow, to a cooling cover and the infusion of thermoregulating copper in the foam comfort layer.
Like many of Brooklyn Bedding’s mattresses, the Aurora Luxe is also available in three different firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm — so it does give you some level of customization (though not as much as a Sleep Number mattress). You can always pair it with the brand’s Ascension Adjustable Base for added adjustability.
I tested the Medium version of the Aurora Luxe and was blown away with how it performed across the board. Although it earned high marks in the categories we tested, it earned a perfect 5 out of 5 in cooling and responsiveness. Combining these scores with a 4.4 or higher in back pressure relief, edge support, and motion isolation rocketed the Aurora Luxe to a 4.6 overall.
My husband heats up like bacon sizzling in a pan when he sleeps. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for the best cooling mattresses. The Aurora Luxe is one of the best I have tested for hot sleepers. I used a thermal temperature gun to get an initial surface temperature of 68.5 degrees. After lying on it for 5 minutes, I took another reading. The mattress only heated up 4 degrees, showing that it has excellent temperature regulation. I loved how the bed stayed cool to the touch the whole time I was on it.
My colleague and Olympic weightlifting champion, Caine Wilkes, helped me test the Aurora Luxe’s pressure-relieving capabilities for folks weighing over 230 pounds. He gave it a 5 out 5 in pressure relief. “I feel supportive and aligned and I like how there is no extra pressure around my lower back or hips,” he said. “Overall, I feel very balanced.”

I was the average-weight tester for pressure relief, and I also gave this mattress a perfect score in this category. I used a specialized mat on top of the Aurora Luxe to capture color-coded thermal images of the parts of my body that were feeling the most pressure. When I was on my back my body was covered in blue, indicating that there was little pressure. I was particularly fond of how it filled in the space around my lower back. It felt like it was actively drawing tension away from that area.

However, the Aurora Luxe wasn’t as great at relieving pressure for those who sleep on their sides. This is something that you will want to be mindful of, especially if you are a petite side sleeper who sleeps strictly on your side. Also, those who like softer beds that cradle and contour will likely find this bed to be too firm.
Ensuring that we had the best Sleep Number alternatives was hard work. We want you to have the best of the best and know why we chose the mattresses that we did. In doing so, we had to leave out some notable mattresses. Although these just missed the mark, we think that they still deserve a shoutout.
I considered the Nectar Premier, but went with the Nectar Classic because I think the latter’s medium-firm feel is more universally appealing. The Premier also had lower pressure relief scores than the Classic.
The Avocado Green made my short list of Sleep Number alternatives because it’s eco-friendly and uses high-end materials. Considering that it uses bouncy latex, it is also an exceptionally responsive mattress, making it a solid choice for combination sleepers and sexually active couples. However, its premium construction comes with a higher price tag, and I wanted to make the alternatives as budget friendly as possible.
How We Picked and Tested These Mattresses
We take picking mattresses seriously. Together with a handful of medical advisors, our team of certified sleep science coaches put together a comprehensive testing methodology that allows us to evaluate the mattresses from a host of different angles. Here’s what we look at when we assess mattresses.
Motion Isolation
If you’re sharing the bed with a partner, pet, or child, you may be familiar with sleep disturbances from their tossing and turning. A bed with low motion transfer can isolate a sleeper’s motion and prevent the sleeper on the other side from feeling it. We test motion isolation in mattresses using a two-tiered approach.

When conducting our first test, the ripple test, we place a large container of water on one side of the mattress, then toss and turn on the other side. We then observe the liquid to see how much it sloshes about. If the liquid barely moves, then it’s a safe bet that the mattress is keeping the motion isolated. If the liquid is sloshing around or spills onto the mattress, then the bed has high motion transfer and poor motion isolation. For our second test, the partner test, we recreate a real-life scenario by having one tester lie stationary with their eyes closed while the other gets in and out of bed and rolls around. The motionless person notes how many times they felt their partner move.

Cooling
Even though it’s easy to find a cooling mattress that’s not a smart bed, a Sleep Number mattress can alter its temperature based on how hot and cold you are. When choosing your next new mattress, the best option comes down to what level of technology you want. If you just want something that cools on its own, a standard cooling mattress is probably fine. But if you want something that can adapt to your ever-changing needs, go for Sleep Number.
When our certified sleep science coaches assess cooling, they first examine the bed’s materials and construction. All-foam beds have a reputation for trapping heat, but the inclusion of cooling materials, such as gel-infused foam, can help keep the bed cool. Coil layers also help with cooling, as they’re breathable and allow air to flow through the mattress. Our testers also assess cooling using a thermal gun that measures the surface temperature of the mattress. We first use the thermal gun to record the initial temperature of the mattress, then re-record the temperature after lying on the mattress for 5 minutes. A temperature change of less than 8 degrees indicates good cooling, and a change of less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.

Edge Support
Edge support refers to a mattress’s ability to maintain its shape and provide stability when sitting or lying near the edges, preventing sagging and offering a larger usable surface area. Sleep Number mattresses typically feature reinforced edges, which enhance support and prevent the sleeper from rolling out of bed, making it easier to get in and out. This design allows users to maximize their sleeping space without feeling like they might fall off the side. We test edge support by using a measuring tape to measure the amount of sink experienced when sitting or lying on the edge of the bed.

What to Consider
One of the biggest draws to Sleep Number mattresses is how customizable they are. Therefore, when we are selecting alternatives, we look for beds with multiple firmness levels and those that have universally appealing features. Given that many Sleep Number mattresses are expensive, we take a budget-friendly approach to searching for comparable alternatives. Here are a few more mattress factors to consider.
Firmness
A Sleep Number mattress offers adjustable firmness, thanks to its complex network of air chambers that inflate and deflate based on user preference and sensor data. While some alternatives have adjustable firmness, most do not. So, if you decide not to go with Sleep Number, consider which firmness setting will be best for you.
Here at Sleepopolis, we always have multiple certified sleep science coaches lie on the mattress and score it from 1 to 10 on our mattress firmness scale. A 1 represents the softest mattress, and 10 represents the firmest. We consider a score of 6.5 to be the standard for an actual medium-firm mattress. We generally recommend soft mattresses for side sleepers, medium-firm mattresses for back sleepers, and firm mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Budget
You might have guessed that smart beds are generally more expensive than classic or even luxury mattresses. Because these beds contain so much technology, they won’t be great options for shoppers trying to stay within a strict budget. Most smart beds go for thousands of dollars. However, pairing one of the mattresses on this list with an adjustable base is a cheaper way to get the smart bed experience.
How much you’re willing to spend on a mattress is entirely up to you, and we can’t make that decision for you. But we can provide you with our general rule of thumb for how mattresses are priced and how much common mattress materials typically cost.
One of the most unique traits about Sleep Number is that their mattresses track your sleeping patterns and then adjust themselves based on the data. Some of the Sleep Number alternatives on this list allow you to change the firmness, and you can customize your sleeping angle when you pair them with an adjustable base. However, Sleep Number is currently leading the way in mattresses that collect sleep data. If having a mattress that collects sleep data is important to you, then you should opt for a Sleep Number.
Keep in mind that a smart bed is not the only way to track your sleep data. There are various gadgets on the market designed to track your sleep and report back to you in the morning. Some trackers are designed to be worn to bed, such as the WHOOP 4.0 bracelet and the Oura Ring. There are also specialized sleep tracking mats you can place under your mattress, like the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat, and apps you can download on your phone, like the RISE App. With devices like these, you can track your sleep without purchasing a smart bed.
Durability
Mattress durability refers to how well a mattress maintains its structural integrity and comfort over time, typically measured by its resistance to sagging, wear, and deterioration. Sleep Number mattresses are known for their durable construction, featuring high-quality materials that can withstand years of use while retaining their adjustable support features. When shopping for a Sleep Number alternative, look for mattresses made from high-density foams, strong innerspring systems, or robust hybrid designs, as these tend to offer better longevity. Additionally, checking for warranties and customer reviews can provide insight into the mattress’s long-term performance.
Device Compatibility
Sleep Number mattresses can all connect to your smartphone or other devices. Still, you’ll want to verify that the technology you’re using is compatible, so be sure to check Sleep Number’s website and the product specs before purchasing.
Types of Mattress
When searching for a new mattress, there are many different materials to consider.
A look into the construction of different types of mattresses.
Innerspring mattresses contain a thin layer of foam at the top but use steel coils as the main material. These beds are typically very supportive, have a bit of bounce, and are breathable.
All-foam mattresses contain no coils and are constructed with layers of foam. These beds usually provide a decent amount of sinkage and pressure relief, depending on the firmness of the foam.
Hybrid mattresses combine layers of foam with coils to create a balance between pressure relief and support.
Latex mattresses are naturally cooling, hypoallergenic, and bouncy.
The best material for you is largely dependent on your sleeping position, body type, and personal preference. For more information on mattress construction, check out our complete guide to the different types of mattresses.
FAQs
Is a Sleep Number mattress worth it?
It depends on your budget and your comfort with technology. Sleep Number beds are costly, but if you can afford it, they do offer a wide range of customization that allows you to choose from a near-endless number of firmness levels. Having the ability to adjust your mattress’s firmness can also help with issues such as back pain and provide more contouring when you need it.
However, these mattresses won’t be within everyone’s price range. They’re also made with complex technology that may not come naturally to everyone. There may be a slight learning curve after purchasing.
What is a less expensive Sleep Number alternative?
A Sleep Number alternative offers some of the benefits of a Sleep Number bed but without all of the bells and whistles and high price point. For instance, Brooklyn Bedding offers various firmness levels for many of its mattresses. Although that’s not the same level of customization as Sleep Number, it still gives you some options. All the mattresses on this list will be less expensive than most Sleep Number beds, though some may reach a similar price if you add an adjustable base for further flexibility.
We’ve also chosen an option that offers the same adjustability of a Sleep Number bed, such as the Saatva Solaire. Although these mattresses are still expensive, they’re not as expensive as many Sleep Number options.
What should you look for in a Sleep Number alternative?
First, consider your sleeping position and firmness preference. Then select a mattress that fulfills both of those parameters. From there, hone in on more specific factors such as price, warranty, sleep trial, etc.
