Colorado’s 50
Best Cities for Sleep

2020

Named by Spanish explorers for one its main rivers, Colorado is the land of crystal blue skies, 14,000 foot mountain peaks, and powdery snow. Colorado joined the Union 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, thus its moniker The Centennial State. This state is the only one in the US whose entire landmass lies above 1000 meters. The population has soared 15% in less than10 years, mostly in the Mile High City of Denver.

Things to know about Colorado:

  • The state is home to many famous ski areas, including Aspen/Snowmass, Vail, and Telluride
  • The Front Range city of Colorado Springs is home to the US Air Force Academy and Fort Carson, a US Army base
  • Colorado was the first state to legalize medical, industrial, and recreational marijuana
  • The Continental Divide runs directly through Colorado, and separates the rivers that drain into the Pacific Ocean from those that drain into the Atlantic
  • Despite its relatively small population, Colorado has five major sports teams, all based in Denver

So how does the population of this scenic state sleep? Does its thin mountain air help or hinder slumber? How does Colorado’s low obesity rate impact rates of sleep apnea and insomnia? Join us as we dig into the numbers to find out how The Centennial State stacks up.

27 %

The percentage of adults who report insufficient sleep each year. Insufficient sleep increases the chance of weight gain, cognitive problems, and cardiovascular disease

21 %

The percentage of adults who report a BMI — or body mass index — above 30%. Higher body mass usually equals a greater risk of sleep apnea

21 %

The percentage of adults who report excessive drinking. Heavy drinking is linked to disrupted sleep and less REM sleep
