Ohio’s 50
Best Cities for Sleep

2020

The Buckeye State gets its name from a Seneca word for the Ohio River which means “good river.” The area shows signs of inhabitation going back to at least 13,000 BC. Ohio joined the Union as the 17th state in 1803. Today, Ohio is the third largest manufacturing state in the US, the 7th most populous, and the 34th biggest by area. The state was the birthplace of 7 American presidents, giving it the moniker “Mother of Presidents.”

Interesting facts about Ohio:

  • The highest temperature ever recorded in Ohio was 113 degrees on July 21, 1934
  • Famous people from Ohio include Thomas Edison, Lebron James, and Sarah Jessica Parker
  • No other state has a flag like Ohio’s, which is an unusual pennant style
  • The first traffic light was erected in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914
  • The hot dog was created in Ohio by Harry Stevens in 1900

Now that we know a little more about The Buckeye State, let’s check out how the residents here sleep. Which cities top our list for healthy slumber? How do folks in Columbus compare to those in Cleveland and Cuyahoga Falls when it comes to catching Zzz’s? Let’s dig in and see which cities make the grade.

38 %

The percentage of adults who report insufficient sleep each year. Insufficient sleep increases the chance of weight gain, cognitive problems, and cardiovascular disease

32 %

The percentage of adults who report a BMI — or body mass index — above 30%. Higher body mass usually equals a greater risk of sleep apnea

19 %

The percentage of adults who report excessive drinking. Heavy drinking is linked to disrupted sleep and less REM sleep
