The beautiful commonwealth of Virginia boasts the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, and is home to white-tailed deer and bobcats among many other species of animals. The Colony of Virginia was the site of the first permanent English settlement in the US. Of the 20 highest-earning counties in the country, 6 are in Virginia. Due to its proximity to Washington DC, more people in Virginia work for the government than for any other employer.
Things to know about Virginia:
- The state’s nicknames are Old Dominion and Mother of Presidents. 8 presidents were born in Virginia, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison
- The state flower is the blossom of the dogwood tree, which is the state tree
- The final victory in the American Revolution took place in Yorktown, Virginia
- Assateague Island in Virginia has been home to herds of wild ponies for centuries
- The Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia is the world’s largest office building
