New Mexico’s
Best Cities for Sleep

2020

The great state of New Mexico — also known as The Land of Enchantment — was admitted to the Union in 1912. The history of Native Americans in the area dates back a mind-boggling 20,000 years. New Mexico is one of the Four Corners states, along with Colorado, Arizona, and Utah, and is the 5th largest US state. The Rio Grande river runs the full length of New Mexico, which has the lowest ratio of water to land of any state in the country.

Things to know about New Mexico:

  • At 7,199 feet above sea level, Santa Fe is the highest state capital in the US
  • Approximtely 75% of roads in New Mexico are not paved
  • The Spanish founded Santa Fe in 1610, ten years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock
  • The state flower of New Mexico is the yucca
  • The first atomic bomb ever detonated was set off 1945 in the desert near Alamogordo, New Mexico

Now let’s check out how the residents of this beautiful state sleep. Which cities in the Land of Enchantment top our list? Do desert dwellers enjoy better slumber than folks in the mountains? Let’s take a look at our list of New Mexico’s best cities for sleep and get the scoop.

32 %

The percentage of adults who report insufficient sleep each year. Insufficient sleep increases the chance of weight gain, cognitive problems, and cardiovascular disease

26 %

The percentage of adults who report a BMI — or body mass index — above 30%. Higher body mass usually equals a greater risk of sleep apnea

17 %

The percentage of adults who report excessive drinking. Heavy drinking is linked to disrupted sleep and less REM sleep
