Rhode Island’s
Best Cities for Sleep

2020

The Ocean State is the smallest US state by area — just 1,214 square miles compared to Alaska’s 663,000! One of the original Thirteen Colonies, Rhode Island was home to indigenous Americans for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. Much of the state is at sea level — in fact, the highest point in all of Rhode Island is only 812 feet high.

Interesting facts about The Ocean State:

  • The first polo match in the US took place near Newport, Rhode Island in 1876
  • Portsmouth is home to the oldest schoolhouse in the country, which was built in 1716
  • The first British troops sent to the US to quell the revolution landed in Newport
  • The first Baptist church in the US was built in Providence in 1700
  • The state dessert is the doughboy, a type of fried dough usually topped with powdered sugar

So how does Rhode Island stack up when it comes to slumber? Does this little state put up big numbers for sleep, or do residents in cities like Providence and Warwick find shuteye hard to come by? Let’s take a look at our data and see what we find.

36 %

The percentage of adults who report insufficient sleep each year. Insufficient sleep increases the chance of weight gain, cognitive problems, and cardiovascular disease

27 %

The percentage of adults who report a BMI — or body mass index — above 30%. Higher body mass usually equals a greater risk of sleep apnea

17 %

The percentage of adults who report excessive drinking. Heavy drinking is linked to disrupted sleep and less REM sleep
